Today we are going to discuss an important definition that I think people misuse all the time.

What is a chandelier?

The dictionary definition of the word chandelier is:

A decorative ceiling-mounted hanging light with branches for several light bulbs or candles.

The key to that definition that definition which seems to always get lost in the excitement of decorating a home is that a chandelier has branches for several light bulbs or candles.

Backsplash Tile Adds Eye Appeal

Cabinets, counter tops and backsplash tile can make or break a kitchen. I am researching building products in an effort to build my next house with good quality, long lasting and eye appealing features. Needless to say, the kitchen is really very important to me because I love to cook.

Backsplash tile is made from many different products and an assortment of colors, sizes and designs. Marble and granite look classy and are very durable. Some of the marble and granite colors that can be found include white carrara, troy gold, teos green, Baltic brown, lemon ice and Incas gold.

Depending on the usage, natural stone can have several different types of finishes such as: polished, honed, flamed, brushed hammered, leathered and brushed. I see polished backsplash tiles and counter tops most of the time, however, I'm really not sure if that's what I want in my kitchen this time around. The non-glossy appearance seems so much more rustic, earthy and appealing.

Do you have to be rich to decorate your home?

You don't have to be rich, but you do have to have a home to live if you're going to decorate!

The economy has really hurt real estate everywhere.

Everywhere!

Many people dream of some day going to Hawaii and even living there because it is absolutely gorgeous with perfect weather. The real estate in Hawaii has been hurt by the economy just as badly as anywhere else. Actually, reports are that home sales are still dropping quite significantly in Hawaii with the next few months looking grim as well.

Another place that has beautiful weather and well known is San Diego, California. The price of homes in that area can also be pricey, but Kristian Peter says that the area is "holding steady." That was encouraging to hear, but what if that is only true for the west coast?

I decided to test another market on the east coast of the United States. South Carolina real estate continues to decline and is expected to under perform the rest of the United States. Much like Hawaii, South Carolina has many rough months ahead.

All the economist are saying about the same thing...The housing bubble can not be compared to anything else that has ever happened and there is no way to predict what the housing market will look like in the next ten years. With that being said, we need to ensure that we do a few basic things:

Save money
Learn to live more frugally
Become more independent
Plan ahead
Make wise economic decisions

I'm sure the economist would agree that we should all invest our money wisely and pay attention to the real estate trends especially if purchasing a home is in the future.

I've talked about mailboxes before, however,commercial mailboxes are a little bit different. For instance, apartment mailboxes need to be secure, sturdy and convenient. Often you will see cluster mailboxes placed in a central location at the apartment complex. They are made of heavy duty aluminum and are accessed from the front through easy opening master door panels. I remember when I was growing up, every now and then someone would drive down the street bashing all the mailboxes with a baseball bat. It was so destructive and absolutely pointless. Decorating With Comfy Feet

Renovating a home is hard, but enjoyable work and it is important to be comfortable while in the midst of controlled chaos. For me, if my feet aren't comfortable, nothing else is either.

I always look for a pair of shoes that are not only comfortable, but also that they will stand the test of time with great value. While I'm walking around the store looking for all the things needed to do a few construction type projects for my home, I could be wearing these lovely boots...

If my errands were not that demanding and I didn't have to lift wood or move plants into the trunk, I would be quite happy in these athletic shoes which some people call sneakers...

There are times when I need to slip my shoes on and off without using my hands because they are busy with carrying all the stuff I purchased for my house. Not only is this pair of shoes perfect for the slipping on and slipping off thing, but they are bright, happy shoes!

Unfortunately, there are times that I must dress up and lay the renovating and decorating aside. That means I have to pull out a dress and definitely stockings. On those occasions when I'm dressed to the nines, I'm never thrilled about anything I'm wearing except for the shoes. Really, I can't help but get excited about a pair of pumps like these...

I knew that I had "arrived" when I started middle school because everyone was given a locker as a place to store their books and supplies.

Butcher Block Dreams

A few days ago I watched a movie that was centered around a chef who spent most of his time in the kitchen. He had a large rack above his head with gorgeous, shiny pots and pans hanging down.

It made me think about my own home and what kind of things add eye appeal and make life a little more comfortable. I have always wanted dual utility sinks in the laundry room. Since I would be the only one that used these large stainless steel sinks, it would always be clean and ready to wash a delicate laundry item or to bleach out a stain. These utility sinks are definitely on my wish list especially since it is really affordable.

Moving on into the kitchen, I immediately think of the large butcher block table that beckons to me every time I visit ButcherBlockCo. especially since I know that there is free shipping! I can imagine myself standing with an onion in one hand and a very large knife in the next, poised like Julia Childs in a brightly colored apron. I'm salivating at the mere thought of it!

I love the look, feel and utility of butcher block. The tables come in all shapes and sizes meaning that everyone can find one they enjoy. As a matter of fact, there are so many, it is hard to choose just one.

Dual utility sinks and a butcher block table are two great additions to any home, but what about when I don't feel like cooking in the kitchen, doing laundry or any of the other million thing a housewife and mother must do on a daily basis? Well, when relaxing from all the chores, I think strolling over to an adirondack chair with a good book to read would be just lovely. Not only do adirondack chairs offer comfort with the spacious armrests and seating, but the furniture is constructed to last for many generations of visiting friends and family gatherings.

I may be only dreaming of owning these gorgeous and functional items now, but I'm always hopeful for the future. Besides, isn't that the thought behind working hard to make your dreams come true?

Window Plant Boxes

I've always been a huge fan of window flower boxes and garden window boxes. Let's start with the basics which apply to both types of window boxes.

Since the window plant boxes are attached to the home, it is important that they accent and blend with the style of the house, property and the color of the flowers when the plants bloom. Regardless of the material, color, size or style, each window box is constructed with drainage holes in the bottom. Window boxes constructed of vinyl are my favorite type because:

they are resistant to moisture and therefore do not rot
easy to install
extremely affordable
come in various sizes and shapes

A window flower box can add curb appeal to your home, but also can grow flowers that can be dried and used in perfumes, lotions, candles, soaps and sachets. Not only can you grow flowers from seeds and small plants, but flower bulbs such as tulips can also add quite a dramatic effect to the house. Other flowers that grow well in a window box include:

geraniums
marigolds
petunias
verbenas
hyacinths
pansies
lavender
daffodils
basket of gold
vincas
coleus

When planting a window box, it is best if you layer from bottom to top in the following order:

start with a one inch layer of pebbles or small stones
cover the pebbles with a layer of sphagnum moss or piece of burlap
add nutrient rich soil
add plants
cover soil with a layer of mulch or peat moss
fertilize and water

A garden window box can also help cut down on the cost of groceries and add richer flavors to your food. Another great use for a window box is to harvest fresh, homegrown and delicious vegetables and herbs grown organically. The term organic gardening means that synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are not used. The soil must also be nutrient rich and that is obtained by mixing leaf and grass clippings, compost and composted manure. Be sure to plant according to the individual needs of the vegetables for light, moisture, drainage and soil quality.

A great advantage growing vegetables in a window box is the ease of care and maintenance. Weeding becomes a breeze and there is no more back breaking bending over! Vegetables and herbs that grow well in window boxes include:

leaf lettuce
radishes
peppers
tomatoes
green onions
eggplant
squash
strawberries
small carrots
bay laurel
rosemary
thyme
basil
sage
parsley
nasturtiums
oregano
cilantro

One way to express originality to your curb appeal is to make your address very visible and personal. Address plaques or address signs are easy to read and you can choose one that reflects your own unique style. Not only are they more decorative, but they have a neat and tidy appearance.

My dream home is a cute little log cabin with me running around in long johns and flannel shirts while being warmed by a huge fire. The decorations on the outside of the cabin would also need to be rustic.

Trees That Go Timber!

Since I have lived through tornadoes and hurricanes, I'm very aware of the damage they leave in their path. Living on the east coast means that we have big, beautiful trees, but during any type of storm that includes wind, those same trees turn into terrorizing flying and falling objects.

When the morning after a storm arrives, the first thing you notice is all the felled trees. They are spread across not only the land, but also electrical wires, cars and homes. It is impossible to move them all with just a saw and one person. It usually takes a crew with machines that can lift someone high into a tree or pull a heavy tree off a structure. Companies like Raleigh Tree Service, Durham Tree Service and Tree Service Cary NC specialize in this type of service and are very familiar with the impact trees can make during and after a major weather event.

These companies are not only busy during a crisis...

but they are extremely helpful at keeping trees pruned back to a manageable size to help prevent them from falling onto personal property before these storms. Orchids - Beauty and Care

Orchids are some of the most beautiful flowers I've ever had the joy to experience. However, I've always been intimidated by the elegant flower because of the care I imagined they needed. It is true that some orchids need very specialized care, but those that are classified in the temperate species can often be found at nurseries and grown in personal greenhouses or even homes. A few of these orchids are:

Ophrys apifera (Bee Orchid)
Gymnadenia conopsea (Fragrant Orchid)
Anacamptis pyramidalis (Pyramidal Orchid)

Dactylorhiza fuchsii (Common Spotted Orchid)

If you're like me and can kill a houseplant with just a look, consider bringing orchids into the home for decorating. The plant has several flower buds which will open over a few weeks time and can continue blooming for months. How's that for a lasting live decorative accent?

As with any plants, the threat of insects is real even when grown in the safety of an enclosed and well lit greenhouse. One such aggravating pest is the aphid. Especially during winter months, aphids attack the young shoots and are also found on flower buds. As long as there are only a few of these pests, they can be removed manually or killed by spraying with a soapy water mixture.

Growing orchids to enjoy in the home is well worth the effort. These elegant flowers will add not only long lasting beauty, but also brighten the room with their colors and mystery. Ahh, we all love the magic of mystery.

Sundials in the Garden

I've always found sundials to be mystically mesmerizing probably because I have been a watch fanatic since I was very young. Actually, I have every watch I have ever owned including those childhood watches.

Before there was the convenience of owning a watch that sat on your arm all day, there were sundials. The sun casts a shadow from its gnomon onto the dial plate which is a flat surface with time indicators as shown below. In this case, there are bold Roman numerals marking the hours. In order for sundial to tell time accurately, the gnomon (also known as the "style") must point towards true north.
