Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time : Rights of the Chosen ones

Reading 1

EX 17:8-13

In those days, Amalek came and waged war against Israel.
Moses, therefore, said to Joshua,
"Pick out certain men,
and tomorrow go out and engage Amalek in battle.
I will be standing on top of the hill
with the staff of God in my hand."
So Joshua did as Moses told him:
he engaged Amalek in battle
after Moses had climbed to the top of the hill with Aaron and Hur.
As long as Moses kept his hands raised up,
Israel had the better of the fight,
but when he let his hands rest,
Amalek had the better of the fight.
Moses’hands, however, grew tired;
so they put a rock in place for him to sit on.
Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands,
one on one side and one on the other,
so that his hands remained steady till sunset.
And Joshua mowed down Amalek and his people
with the edge of the sword.

2 TM 3:14-4:2

Beloved:  Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed,

because you know from whom you learned it,

through faith in Christ Jesus.

and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction,

and for training in righteousness,

so that one who belongs to God may be competent,

equipped for every good work.

 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,

who will judge the living and the dead,

and by his appearing and his kingly power:

proclaim the word;

be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient;

convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching.

Gospel

LK 18:1-8

Jesus told his disciples a parable
about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.
He said, "There was a judge in a certain town
who neither feared God nor respected any human being.
And a widow in that town used to come to him and say,
'Render a just decision for me against my adversary.'
For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought,
'While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being,
because this widow keeps bothering me
I shall deliver a just decision for her
lest she finally come and strike me.'"
The Lord said, "Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says.
Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones
who call out to him day and night?
Will he be slow to answer them?
I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily.
But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

Theme for reflection: Rights of the chosen

Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? (Lk. 18:7)

(It may be a good thing to ask ourselves and ask one another at the beginning itself whether we consider ourselves, in keeping with these words of Jesus, the chosen ones of God? It is not a mere exercise in futility but a profound statement of belief which has its roots in the Apostles creed which we recite and affirm.)

Thus it is affirmed in Scripture: We are God’s chosen ones in Christ Jesus. 1 Pt. 2:9; also refer: Mt. 22:14; Jn. 13:8; Acts 9:15; Rom. 11:5; Col. 3:12; 1 Thess. 1:4; 1 Pt. 1:2.

We become his chosen ones by virtue of our call to a “faith, more precious than gold which though perishable is tested by fire.” 1 Peter 1:7

At the same time, to be a chosen is not a guarantee of eternal life unless and until we live a life worthy of that calling, with hearts filled with gratitude and persevering faith, resolute in a battle where victory is surely ours in Christ Jesus.

Judas was also a chosen one but perished because he did not live up to his calling through faithful obedience. (cfr. Jn. 13:18)

If we consider ourselves faithful and chosen ones of God then we need to know that we are constantly walking the narrow path, into the Promised Land of eternal life and at the same time in constant battle with the enemies of Christ both in the world and in the spiritual realm.

This battle is not on account of us wanting to battle with others but rather because the enemy wants to rob us of the eternal life which God has prepared for those who respond to his unconditional love.

Yes, we are the chosen ones of God and hence called to use the special gifts and blessings we have received from God for our own sanctification and for the sanctification of others. It is a responsibility that is not to be abused.

The weapons of warfare provided us by God are not material ones but spiritual and what we see in the first reading is a glimpse into the battle which takes place in the heavenly realm; a foretaste of things to come.

It was not Joshua who wins the battle against the Amalekites or Moses, who actually spearheads the battle in the visible realm, but the living God who accompanies them in a humble unassuming power that is able to lead every thought into submission to God.

We has Catholics have the additional graces in the intercession of the Blessed Mother of Jesus, the saints in glory who do warfare on our behalf in the heavenly sphere just as Moses was high up on the mountain assisted by Aaron and Hur.

Therefore St. Paul says; “For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war, for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.” 2 Cor 10:3-6

Further he says: “For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Eph 6:12-13

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Leprosy of Sin

2 KGS 5:14-17

Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times
at the word of Elisha, the man of God.
His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child,
and he was clean of his leprosy.

Naaman returned with his whole retinue to the man of God.
On his arrival he stood before Elisha and said,
"Now I know that there is no God in all the earth,
except in Israel.
Please accept a gift from your servant."

Elisha replied, "As the LORD lives whom I serve, I will not take it;"
and despite Naaman's urging, he still refused.
Naaman said: "If you will not accept,
please let me, your servant, have two mule-loads of earth,
for I will no longer offer holocaust or sacrifice
to any other god except to the LORD."

2 TM 2:8-13

Beloved:
Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David:

But the word of God is not chained.
Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are chosen,
so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus,
together with eternal glory.
This saying is trustworthy:
If we have died with him
we shall also live with him;
if we persevere
we shall also reign with him.
But if we deny him
he will deny us.
If we are unfaithful
he remains faithful,
for he cannot deny himself.

Gospel

LK 17:11-19

As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem,
he traveled through Samaria and Galilee.
As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him.
They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying,
"Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!"
And when he saw them, he said,
"Go show yourselves to the priests."
As they were going they were cleansed.
And one of them, realizing he had been healed,
returned, glorifying God in a loud voice;
and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.
He was a Samaritan.
Jesus said in reply,
"Ten were cleansed, were they not?
Where are the other nine?
Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?"
Then he said to him, "Stand up and go;
your faith has saved you."

Theme for reflection: Leprosy of Sin

Leprosy is a deadly disease because it separates the victim from the community.

In that sense it is no different than death itself which separates us from the living.

Unlike in death there are a few exceptions, the first one is that of some people accommodating a leprous. Prominent among them is the leprous community itself, which welcomes another leprous and even understands the state of his leprous brother or sister belonging to the community.

The other category could be the parents or the near or loved ones who will accept their own leprous and will do anything to reach out to them.

While the parents would reach out to them they would take the help of the medical fraternity wherever possible.

Why So? Leprosy is a contagious disease which eats into us and renders our nerves and limbs lifeless, numb and deformed.

If one were to explain the consequences of sin, then it has the same effect on the individual. Hence, just as leprosy is to the body so too is the effect of sin on the soul.

Just as leprosy separates us from others so too sin separates us from the life of God.

Such is the separation of the lepers that even God in Christ Jesus does not go out of his way to reach out to them on his own volition.

Rather they in their misery cry out to Jesus first; "Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!"

God though may not reach out to us without our consent or desire but he does reach out to us promptly if only we cry out to him who is able to save us, our savior God.

We need to take that first step and God will even take a thousand steps forward in order to reach out to us with his saving grace.

And what is more, he even restores to us to the community from which we have been estranged, through the office of the priest.

Just as in the Old Testament a priest would separate the victim of leprosy from the commonwealth of Israel and then also becomes an instrument to restore the leper, who is cleansed, back to the community similarly Jesus through his death on the cross and through the ministry of reconciliation exercised by the priest restores us back to the community of Christian faith.

Similarly, the priest by proclaiming the moral gospel of Jesus may bring about an estrangement of the sinners in the midst of the church as in the Old Testament.likewise by the proclamation of the word and by calling people to repentance and faith he reconciles and restores them to God and to one another.

The Lord said to Moses, 2 "This shall be the law of the leper for the day of his cleansing. He shall be brought to the priest; 3 and the priest shall go out of the camp, and the priest shall make an examination. Lev 14:1-3

Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called the uncircumcision by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands - 12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near in the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; 18 for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone. For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did this once for all when he offered up himself. Heb 7:26-27

Once you were no people but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:10

I have already charged that all men, both Jews and Greeks, are under the power of sin, 10 as it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands, no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside, together they have gone wrong; no one does good, not even one." 13 "Their throat is an open grave, they use their tongues to deceive." "The venom of asps is under their lips." 14 "Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness." 15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood, 16 in their paths are ruin and misery, 17 and the way of peace they do not know." 18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes." 19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no human being will be justified in his sight by works of the law, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. How long, O LORD? I cry for help

but you do not listen!

I cry out to you, "Violence!"

but you do not intervene.

Why do you let me see ruin;

Destruction and violence are before me;

Then the LORD answered me and said:

Write down the vision clearly upon the tablets,

so that one can read it readily.

For the vision still has its time,

presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint;

if it delays, wait for it,

it will surely come, it will not be late.

The rash one has no integrity;

but the just one, because of his faith, shall live.

2 TM 1:6-8, 13-14

Beloved:

I remind you, to stir into flame

the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands.

For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice

but rather of power and love and self-control.

So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord,

nor of me, a prisoner for his sake;

but bear your share of hardship for the gospel

with the strength that comes from God.

Take as your norm the sound words that you heard from me,

in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

Guard this rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit

that dwells within us.

LK 17:5-10

The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith."

The Lord replied,

"If you have faith the size of a mustard seed,

you would say to this mulberry tree,

'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

"Who among you would say to your servant

who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field,

'Come here immediately and take your place at table'?

Would he not rather say to him,

'Prepare something for me to eat.

Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink.

You may eat and drink when I am finished'?

Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded?

So should it be with you.

When you have done all you have been commanded,

say, 'We are unprofitable servants;

we have done what we were obliged to do.'"

Theme for reflection: Faith

The great marvel called faith and what it can accomplish is astonishing and that is what Jesus seems to remind us with an example:

"If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. (Lk. 17:6)

In the gospel of Matthew it is a similar rendition of the same truth, but here Jesus is much more explicit and assertive in what may seem like an exaggeration:

For truly, I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you." (Matt 17:20)

Christians throughout history and even in our times have accomplished mighty things through faith in Jesus Christ.

But, among all these accomplishments, who has moved a mountain or a mulberry tree?

We have no report about this particular miracle of faith and yet there are countless miracles of faith reported all throughout Biblical and Christian history, miracles that concerns humans and leads one to faith. It is an indication of the purpose of faith’s action and what it is supposed to accomplish.

God indeed is the one of who can accomplish the impossible, making possible even in our day, what humanly cannot be accomplished with its own brand of faith.

Jesus teaches us that the basic qualification required is faith?

Is there anything new in Jesus’ teaching on faith and the power to accomplish many things?

There are many who may qualify Jesus teaching on faith, even those who may not believe in Jesus may vouch for the need to have faith to accomplish mighty things, if not the impossible.

Yet what the others teach about faith and what Jesus teaches are two different things; both may talk about the need to have faith and yet are totally divergent in their viewpoint about the quality of faith.

What is important to note is that one is a dangerous proposition and the other is nectar for the human soul.

One leads to hell while the other leads to life, even fullness of life leading to eternity. (cfr. Jn. 10:10)

When Jesus calls us to accomplish things in faith, he is calling his dedicated disciples to have faith in God and have the faith of God as manifested in his Son Jesus and thus accomplish the work of God.

Whereas what others teach is to put ones faith in the self, which may accomplish many things through sheer determination and will power, maybe even good things by human standards but abominable in the sight of God.

Jesus’ teaching is meant for the insignificant and poor in spirit, who walk in the simplicity of life fully aware that faith in self and faith in the intellectual gurus of this world cannot ultimately accomplish the work of God in this world and will definitely lead to eternal damnation. They apparently may seem good but in reality are the seeds that sow godlessness and evil.

This work of faith is not just about moving the many mountains through human action, it is also about bearing the hardship that accompanies one, as in the second reading, when they participate in the gospel of faith. (2 Tim. 2: 8)

This faith even means that if God delays his saving action, as in the first reading, then one should not lose hope but to persevere: if it delays, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late. The rash one has no integrity; but the just one, because of his faith, shall live. (Hab. 2:3b-4)

Though the fig tree do not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

19 God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like hinds' feet, he makes me tread upon my high places. Hab 3:17-19

Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. Rom 1:4-6

That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants - not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham, for he is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations" - in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 18 In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations; as he had been told, "So shall your descendants be." 19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead because he was about a hundred years old, or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb. 20 No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. 22 That is why his faith was "reckoned to him as righteousness." 23 But the words, "it was reckoned to him," were written not for his sake alone, 24 but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him that raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 25 who was put to death for our trespasses and raised for our justification. Rom 4:16-25

Hebrews 11:1 – 12:2

Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4

This is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:4-5

Blessed is the man who endures trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12

"There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen
and dined sumptuously each day.
And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps
that fell from the rich man's table.
Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.
When the poor man died,
he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham.
The rich man also died and was buried,
and from the netherworld, where he was in torment,
he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off
and Lazarus at his side.
And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me.
Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue,
for I am suffering torment in these flames.'
Abraham replied,

to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go

send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers,
so that he may warn them,
lest they too come to this place of torment.'
But Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the prophets.
Let them listen to them.'
He said, 'Oh no, father Abraham,
but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
Then Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.'"

Theme for reflection: Listen

One of the most interesting, shocking and pertinent statement in the scripture is this:

'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.'" (vs. 31)

This message of Jesus is time tested and loaded with meaning. It reveals a great truth of the human state, which refuses to believe the truth.

Today’s readings communicates much of the warnings and truth and how many of us, who may not be reading scriptures on a regular basis but at least have heard this reading sometimes in their lifetime for a Sunday mass, are really putting the message of these readings into practice.

The truth communicated, especially through the second part of the statement is indeed shocking: “neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.” (vs. 31b)

In other words one could say that we may even expect someone to rise from the dead and warn us and yet not listen to them.

Do we know how fatal and self deceiving a sickness it is that we would prefer to listen to ourselves and our logical, self righteous, sane mind (Which in reality is illogical, corrupt and insane)?

That we would prefer to listen to some false prophets and new age gurus and experts rather than the one who is risen from the dead?

Yes, all our confidence is based on false knowledge and we are our own enemies, walking towards self destruction. It is like a situation which the proverbs describe aptly: “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Prov 14:12/ 16:25

While the first readings shows us to what extent one could go to lead a hedonistic life style either in actuality or in our imagination or thoughts the second reading invites with appropriate instructions to lead a life worthy of our call.

What is more, the second reading reminds us that the one who invites us to choose a lifestyle of simplicity and faith has himself given us an example in himself, even to the extent of sacrificing himself for this truth.

If one does not follow these instructions then the scripture even reminds us of the consequences of not following them; a life of torment.

What is this life of torment? When we are faced with trials and persecutions or misunderstandings or separations from a loved one or experience false slander or put to public shame then we all go through torment and in such a situation we prefer to run away from it. There is sense of desperation and frustration, restlessness and uneasiness.

Many of us experience the depth of it when sick or have an attack of some form of infection; the body is as if in hell and no one wants to remain in that hell but seeks the doctor.

Likewise, and in a much greater measure, than this earthly reality, is the reality of hell. It is only a taste of the things we can experience if we were to land there.

Therefore, compete well for the faith. (I Tim. 6: 12a)

If such is the reality then what sort of life should we live. Should we not lead a life of Faith in Jesus rather than faith in self?

In other words; should we not take his word seriously rather than our own words and thinking?

No matter how stupid and illogical the word of God may appear to be, but it is a proven remedy to our proven stupidity.

Proven by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead and proven by the faith of the countless throughout the history of Christendom and even in our time and in our midst by the many who follow him diligently.

No longer then we need to listen to any prophets or someone of the stature of Moses, but we have someone who indeed has risen from the dead and speaks to us even to this day.

LK 16:1-13

Jesus said to his disciples,

“A rich man had a steward

who was reported to him for squandering his property. 

He summoned him and said,

‘What is this I hear about you? 

Prepare a full account of your stewardship,

because you can no longer be my steward.’

The steward said to himself, ‘What shall I do,

now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me? 

I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg. 

I know what I shall do so that,

when I am removed from the stewardship,

they may welcome me into their homes.’

He called in his master’s debtors one by one. 

To the first he said,

‘How much do you owe my master?’

He replied, ‘One hundred measures of olive oil.’

He said to him, ‘Here is your promissory note. 

Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.’

Then to another the steward said, ‘And you, how much do you owe?’

He replied, ‘One hundred kors of wheat.’

The steward said to him, ‘Here is your promissory note;

write one for eighty.’

And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently.

“For the children of this world

are more prudent in dealing with their own generation

than are the children of light. 

I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth,

so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.

The person who is trustworthy in very small matters

is also trustworthy in great ones;

and the person who is dishonest in very small matters

is also dishonest in great ones. 

If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth,

who will trust you with true wealth? 

If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another,

who will give you what is yours? 

No servant can serve two masters. 

He will either hate one and love the other,

or be devoted to one and despise the other. 

You cannot serve both God and mammon.”

Theme for reflection: Real Poverty

In the first reading of today we see the great faithfulness of God towards the poor and the downtrodden.

He warns the rich among the Israelites and those who rule over these poor, here on earth, neither to cheat or swindle them nor to treat them unjustly.

The poor and the poverty of the many are a common problem even in our times and so often we may work out plans to rob and steal the poor by sweet words of treachery.

There are some who are practitioner’s of social justice and work for the emancipation of the poor, the marginalized of society and the downtrodden.

When there are modern day governments, who seem to be extra conscious of the social status of their subject and have socialistic schemes to alleviate the suffering of these poor then why do we require non- NGO’s to strive to work towards the alleviation of the poor?

Hence, do we as Catholics really need to work towards these causes?

It is good for us Catholics to work for the emancipation of the poor but we should not forget to understand the right kind of poverty and work according to God’s wisdom to alleviate the sufferings of the poor rather than go by human priorities and standard.

We should, more so, serve because our God cares for his poor?

Who then are these poor whom we are called to serve in the first place and as of first priority?

Let us first understand the contradiction of the first 2 readings: While the first one is a warning and is a reminder of God faithfully watching over his poor on the other hand the second reading seems to worry about the rich and mighty and invites us to pray and intercede for them.

A deeper glance gives us a reason for such prayer and which could be summed up like this: We Christians who are poor by virtue of our following of Christ Jesus (hence not just a material condition) should pray for these rich and the powerful that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life
in all devotion and dignity. (1 Tim. 2:2)

Similarly in the gospel we are further exposed to this truth that as Christians our poverty is realized not on account of lack of wealth or possession but that every Christian becomes poor in Christ Jesus on account of the realization of one’s status as a steward of God’s wealth and thus walking accordingly.

Which means that we as Christians may have plenty of wealth and money and yet all that one has belongs not to them but to God and that we are mere stewards: That is poverty!

Otherwise we could be active in the service of the poor and the marginalized and yet may be rich with possessions and wealth and the greatest of them is the wealth of the many adulations and honor we accumulate and for which the world is willing to honor and reward.

So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Gal 6:10

They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them,

who brought you out of the land of Egypt!’
“I see how stiff-necked this people is, ” continued the LORD to Moses.
Let me alone, then,
that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them.
Then I will make of you a great nation.”
But Moses implored the LORD, his God, saying,
“Why, O LORD, should your wrath blaze up against your own people,
whom you brought out of the land of Egypt
with such great power and with so strong a hand?
Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,

So the LORD relented in the punishment
he had threatened to inflict on his people.

LK 15:1-32

Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus,
but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying,
“This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
So to them he addressed this parable.
“What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them
would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert
and go after the lost one until he finds it?
And when he does find it,
he sets it on his shoulders with great joy
and, upon his arrival home,
he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them,
‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’
I tell you, in just the same way
there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents
than over ninety-nine righteous people
who have no need of repentance.

“Or what woman having ten coins and losing one
would not light a lamp and sweep the house,
searching carefully until she finds it?
And when she does find it,
she calls together her friends and neighbors
and says to them,
‘Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.’
In just the same way, I tell you,
there will be rejoicing among the angels of God
over one sinner who repents.”

Then he said,
“A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father,
‘Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’
So the father divided the property between them.
After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings
and set off to a distant country
where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.
When he had freely spent everything,
a severe famine struck that country,
and he found himself in dire need.
So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens
who sent him to his farm to tend the swine.
And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed,
but nobody gave him any.
Coming to his senses he thought,
‘How many of my father’s hired workers
have more than enough food to eat,
but here am I, dying from hunger.
I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him,
“Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
I no longer deserve to be called your son;
treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”’
So he got up and went back to his father.
While he was still a long way off,
his father caught sight of him,
and was filled with compassion.
He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.
His son said to him,
‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you;
I no longer deserve to be called your son.’
But his father ordered his servants,
‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him;
put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
Take the fattened calf and slaughter it.
Then let us celebrate with a feast,
because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again;
he was lost, and has been found.’
Then the celebration began.
Now the older son had been out in the field
and, on his way back, as he neared the house,
he heard the sound of music and dancing.
He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean.
The servant said to him,
‘Your brother has returned
and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf
because he has him back safe and sound.’
He became angry,
and when he refused to enter the house,
his father came out and pleaded with him.
He said to his father in reply,
‘Look, all these years I served you
and not once did I disobey your orders;
yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns,
who swallowed up your property with prostitutes,
for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’
He said to him,
‘My son, you are here with me always;
everything I have is yours.
But now we must celebrate and rejoice,
because your brother was d

ead and has come to life again;
he was lost and has been found.’”

Theme for reflection: Our Direction in life

Scripture exegete's will always affirm that we need to read the scripture in context.

What they say is true; we should do exactly that and yet may remain ever fossilized in the context, as many would normally tend to do.

There is a great need to apply the message to our situation and our context too and learn from it or else we would be waking up to a serious blunder.

We may even end up judging scriptural characters while reading the judgments mentioned against them.

Likewise, while analyzing the scripture we cannot be distancing ourselves from the behavior patterns of these people who were against the truth and against the instructions of God.

We could be even worse than them and there is an urgent need to sincerely seek God and ask him to judge us too, by asking him to search our hearts and minds for those sinful ways which we normally tend to be blind to, if left to our own.

Some of us tend to get a relapsed bout of attack and our condition of blindness becomes worse than what it was before.

We could become so blind that, if at any time we have any realization of sin then it is according to the measure of the guilt, shame or embarrassment that we suffer from and not by the measure of the holiness of God or by the measure of his revealed laws.

How blessed is the man, if he, like St. Paul arrived at a realization with God's help as he does here: He was well versed with the revealed laws, and yet could acknowledge thus: “I acted out of ignorance in my unbelief.” (vs. 13)

On the other hand we see in the gospel a similar situation of hardening; on the one hand the tax collectors and sinners were turning to Jesus and on the other hand the Pharisees and the scribes were pushing themselves, more and more, away from Jesus.

Thus they were testing God’s patience towards them by moving more and more towards blindness. It is like the cataract getting hardened and worse, before it is too late and one has to operate it, only to be discarded.

How else can one explain the complaint which God has concerning his own people, who have experienced his mighty power with signs and wonders and yet gone astray?

The reference is definitely his own people and in the present context, the Christian community.

“They have become depraved. They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them.” (vss. 7b-8a)

God be speaking these words to each one of us today as we listen to the readings of today? (repeating)

“They have become depraved. They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them.” (vss. 7b-8a)

The parable of the prodigal son is a story that points to two of the most important things about us:

1) Our tendency to take the things of God for granted and to be blind to the richness that is in him and even moving further and further away from him, while some even imagining themselves as being close to him.

2) That there is still hope in him, if only we could acknowledge our sinful ways and thinking, and not go only by our subjective conscience but by the objective call of God and turn to him.

Then will God, in his great mercy, rejoice over us and shower us with his abundant love, as seen in the parable of the prodigal son.

If we do not know, how to go about it then the Psalm (51) of today is a beautiful prayer and reminder, which we could often and daily recite, with meaning and help from God in order to come closer to God and to be guided by his Holy Spirit and grace.

Or else we could be participating in every sacramental grace and pious devotions and yet be far removed from our God and his ways.

So if you regard me as a partner, welcome him as you would me.

LK 14:25-33

Great crowds were traveling with Jesus,

and he turned and addressed them,

“If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother,

wife and children, brothers and sisters,

and even his own life,

he cannot be my disciple.

Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me

cannot be my disciple.

Which of you wishing to construct a tower

does not first sit down and calculate the cost

to see if there is enough for its completion?

Otherwise, after laying the foundation

and finding himself unable to finish the work

the onlookers should laugh at him and say,

‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’

Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down

and decide whether with ten thousand troops

he can successfully oppose another king

advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops?

But if not, while he is still far away,

he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms.

Theme for reflection: Human Weakness or Limitations

The first reading seems to start with a great pessimism about the nature and quality of human’s with regards to his creator.

“Who can know God’s counsel,

or who can conceive what the LORD intends?

For the deliberations of mortals are timid, and unsure are our plans.

and the earthen shelter weighs down the mind that has many concerns.

And scarce do we guess the things on earth,

and what is within our grasp we find with difficulty;

but when things are in heaven, who can search them out?”

Here it is not just pessimism but also a deep reality, which every human being needs to ponder on; it’s the reality of the truth about our self.

St. Paul addressing the Roman community has this to say: "For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?" Rom 11:34 (cfr. 1 Cor. 2:16)

The Lord revealing to us, about this, is only part of the reality, but we believing this and accepting this truth requires a constant humble action on our part. It is not easy for humans to accept this truth about ourselves.

Yet it is no ordinary revelation about ourselves, which we should neglect to reflect on.

One will be able to give full credence to what the Lord is saying by not just acknowledging ones foolish and stupid state but by actually getting into the exercise of seeing where and in which areas of our life it is true.

Sometimes we may believe but in practice act contrary to belief and that is still more serious because our mind makes us believe that knowledge or awareness is the same as practice.

Let me assure you: if you take God’s help then you will discover your poverty and limitations as a mortal man, as in a mirror.

We will then realize how miserable we are and our fruitless empty boasting, and that the proud mind amounts to nothing and cannot do anything worthwhile by divine standards.

It may accomplish much by human standards but it will amount to nothing by God’s standards. (Jn. 15:5; Ps. 127:1)

We may be smarter than our neighbor and even smarter than the rest and yet may never realize the self deception in which we may be totally embroiled in unless we have the help of the Holy Spirit.

It is the Holy Spirit who makes us wise in the ways of wisdom, truth and eternity.

How do we receive the fullness of this great gift of the Holy Spirit?

Thus; how can the work of our hands prosper? How can we exceed our weaknesses or limitations? How can the oppressed slave receive back his dignity and the marginalized the wealth of peace?

“So therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:33

In the second reading Onesimus the slave receives his dignity by virtue of his faithfulness to Christ, which is manifest in service to the greatest follower of Christ Jesus; Paul the Apostle. (vs. 16)

Similarly, we who are slaves to sin and bondage receive our dignity in Christ Jesus and made wise in the ways of the Kingdom that is everlasting.

One could be partially receiving Christ or fully, but each according to the degree to which one has renounced and embraced Christ is a disciple of Christ and person having the life of the Holy Spirit.

He who has Christ and his Holy Spirit has his life in all their weaknesses and dead works and Jesus is able to make them alive in himself; for the Lord our God is indeed our savior.

Gospel

LK 14:1, 7-14

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine

at the home of one of the leading Pharisees,

and the people there were observing him carefully.

He told a parable to those who had been invited,

noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table.

“When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet,

do not recline at table in the place of honor.

A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him,

and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say,

‘Give your place to this man,’

and then you would proceed with embarrassment

to take the lowest place.

Rather, when you are invited,

go and take the lowest place

so that when the host comes to you he may say,

‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’

Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table.

For every one who exalts himself will be humbled,

but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Then he said to the host who invited him,

“When you hold a lunch or a dinner,

do not invite your friends or your brothers

or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors,

in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.

Rather, when you hold a banquet,

invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.

For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

Theme for reflection: Humility

Humility is the key and strongest theme in the readings of today.

Who is a humble man?

A term that is so very difficult to define, even by the dictionaries of the world.

Shall we then say that he is the one who is aware of his real worth, even if the whole world were to applaud him or eulogize him?

That definition of mine I believe is true and yet disputable and the key dispute is this: How do we know our real self worth, will we not be deceptively believing what we should not believe?

Yet it cannot make the definition wrong. Humans may come to a certain level of understanding their self-worth if they are true to themselves but never the complete awareness if they are on their own.

Our self worth can be, to a large extent, be understood in the light of the mirror of grace which God provides in his Son Jesus and in his presence.

If anyone has achieved something in life and has a reason to pride then they have only to look at Jesus and his achievements, especially reflecting on the cross in totality; there was nothing impossible with him and yet what was needed of him he did.

Hence the cross of Jesus is the greatest medicine for human pride and to grow in the ultimate humility, even a child like humility which makes one dependent on God, just as Jesus did, even unto the cross.

If the greatest ever virtue is humility, then all of mankind, if only they sought this one virtue in and through the cross of Jesus then the world would have been a different place to live in.

This virtue doesn't take away from your talent, the gifts that God has given each one but what it does is this; allow each one to use his gifts in true humility of heart and mind.

This humility takes further root in us when we in this reflection on the cross makes one realize one’s sinfulness and unworthiness before a God who is all powerful, almighty and holy and we are mere creatures whom he loves and accepts in spite of our sinfulness- sinfulness that crucified the innocent and sinless one.

In the gospel instruction on humility which Jesus gives, we could have humble people according to the ways of the world, because Jesus has instructed us thus in the parable on how to conduct ourselves:

Thus we have humble practitioners in the church who may take the last seat in the church and feel justified about it in the light of the parable.

We could have self-effacing individuals who may not play any roles of significant value in the church.

We could have people who may not want to use their talents and gifts to further his kingdom or be a witness or proclaim his gospel.

But when they have to go for the spiritual banquet, i.e. into God’s presence in prayer, they may be in the forefront, with their mind distracted and busy planning the many moves rather than allowing God to invite them closer to his heart and reveal plans for them. .

It is only our humility before the all powerful God that will keep us humble even among his creatures.

Therefore let the preacher strongly exhort, after making attempts to practice it themselves; “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that in due time he may exalt you.” 1 Peter 5:6 (Jas. 4:10)

"For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." Luke 14:11

Wealth

Reflection: “It is my hard earned money” This is normally the term often heard and in various ways it is expressed, all meaning the same.

Surely, there are some who work hard for their bread and butter and to keep enough for a better future for themselves and for their children’s or for their luxury.

In the world there will always be the haves and the have not’s and among these have-nots there may be some who may have made a choice to deprive themselves either miserly or by their generosity.

Does a man have a right to indiscriminately enjoy the fruit of his hard labor? It is a question which has often found critics and the sincerely rich have found unwanted enemies.

Why should they who have much have a right to live in the luxuries of life and in many a case the much may have been only inherited wealth?

Indeed they have labored hard and struggled for it, so as to enjoy the fruit thereof but does it mean that the poor never labor hard and struggle their every bit?

The gospel passage reminds us that God is the giver of all talents and it is he who gives us the ability to make wealth. (cfr. Duet. 8:18)

Though in the gospel passage it especially means the spiritual dimension of the talent which God is bestowing on his servants, to be worked on and bring about an increase yet, this also holds true for all that we possess.

What is it that we have or posses that has not come from the creator above? If we understand the truth herein then it would also be a step towards a humility that pleases God.

For all that we have, including our body, mind and soul comes from God and so too the ability to make wealth.

Therefore, Man humble yourself before the almighty God and "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." Mark 12:17

Remember, your property and talent comes from God and belongs to him and your hard work or labor should be aimed at pleasing him rather than yourselves; for this is the way to perfection.

Prayer: Lord, help me to realize that, all that I posses and have, including the spiritual gifts, comes from you and is to be used for your glory alone.

Educate

Come out to meet him.' 7 Then all those maidens rose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' 9 But the wise replied, 'Perhaps there will not be enough for us and for you; go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.' 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other maidens came also, saying, 'Lord, lord, open to us.' 12 But he replied, 'Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. Reflection: Modern Education has done great wonders; it has brought in development and given ordinary people access to knowledge.

A nation’s wealth is often counted by way of its educated class; for wealth is not just a produce from or of natural resources but also includes human resources of which intellectual property and contribution thereof is an important factor.

Having seen the wonders thereof, every nation makes it point to invest in education and so too society and communities lay great emphasis on education.

Parent will go through great lengths to educate their children in every possible way, making great sacrifice by way of time, wealth and sleep.

Like every good invention and investments which has a flip side so too education; the state of the world with its many problems and irreversible damage done also suggests the evil contribution of education.

No one complains because we rarely see the negative side and see only the positive side and the great contribution of education in terms of wealth generation and rarely human development, with no sound criteria to adjudge it.

Does modern education really develop character and if yes, is it developed in freedom or is it developed in fear and societal conditioning?

What do we compare modern education? Is it not like an artificial hormonal growth: visibly appeals to the eye and growth is sure but is it real quality?

Such an emphasis on education could even be practiced in the religious places and seminaries of today.

The parable reveals to us that that five of the virgins were foolish because they carried no oil in their lamps; the oil of the Holy Spirit that comes through learning at the feet of the master and receiving from his Holy Spirit.

How many of our modern day parents and those among Christians, who have a role in education, teach the children on the importance of keeping their lamps always filled with the oil of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Give me the oil O Lord that my lamp may ever be burning brightly unto eternity and thus prove myself wise in your eyes.

Righteous Man

But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he was much perplexed; and yet he heard him gladly. 21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when Hero'di-as' daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will grant it." 23 And he vowed to her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom." 24 And she went out, and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she said, "The head of John the baptizer." 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter." 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard and gave orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, 28 and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb. Reflection: How far can people go into moral degradation, especially those in power?

Here in Herod we have one such example.

Though historically, a lot may be said about Herod and his immoral ways but the string of one immoral action of his leading to another is clearly evident here and something for each one of us to be cautious about.

He in the first place takes his brother Philips wife as his own wife and thus faces the rebuke of John the Baptist.

Then when Herodias desires that John be thrown into prison, he willing does what she has to command him. Thus proves a greater obedience to the vengeful woman.

Then finally an opportunity arises and she demands the head of John the Baptist, Herod willingly submits to such an act. Thus one act leading him further into another and finally into the pit of decadence.

If he in the first place would have listened to John whom he knew was a righteous and holy man and whom he also held in great respect, then he would not have landed in such trouble.

In other words our respect for God and for a righteous and holy man may not necessarily overflow into listening to them and their wise advice for us.

This problem of disobedience to a righteous and holy man, despite their respect for them, can occur especially in people who wield power.

It is so because these who are in power, though may appear humble to the world and can pretend to be so to the world with their deception, end up persecuting the righteous and holy ones because power has gone to their head.

There is no one around them to even correct them because they surround themselves with ‘yes men’ who still hungrier than them for power, dance according to their every whims and fancies.

On the other hand when those outside correct them then they are filled with rage towards the holy ones of God.

Prayer: Lord, strengthen the righteous man who calls on your name and who seeks not his own glory but yours.

What a Tragedy

Today’s Gospel Text: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30 saying, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' 31 Thus you witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. Matt 23:27-32

Reflection: What a tragedy! How shall we look at these scribes and the Pharisees, in their pitiable state, as they stand exposed by a one man army; Jesus Christ the righteous one?

What was the sin of the scribes and the Pharisees that they had to face such an onslaught from Jesus?

Was it a curse that Jesus utters against them when he proclaims these woes or shall we look at them as opportunities, maybe, it could be a last one for them, lest they die in this misery of blindness?

Such blind men have no room in the kingdom, because it belongs to the restored and the healthy and Jesus came to set these oppressed free in order that they may enter his kingdom.

On the other hand, the action of the scribes and the Pharisees which Jesus was attacking was the one in which they build the tombs of the prophets which their fathers had murdered.

What is more they apparently seemed truly repentant when they would say: “'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' (vs. 30)

Jesus exposes them in their statement; by making such a noble statement they were actually being a witness to a grave fact that their forefathers were murderers and thus they were sons of murderers.

It seemed like a noble intention on their part to protect the prophet in their day, as if they had learnt from the folly of their fathers.

If that was so; then anyone’s noble desire would remain a noble desire to the end, that too perfectly so, then surely they would not face the wrath of God.

But that is not so, even in our day there are the countless who begin well and carry such a desire in their hearts, of serving God, of protecting his prophets, and bringing glory to his name with a noble desire.

Some have even achieved great heights of power and position and yet many ultimately end up like these scribes and Pharisees, as murderers who go on to crucify the Lord; if not in deeds then in at least words

Prayer: Lord, purify those noble intentions and may your spirit constantly make us alive to walk in your ways.

Justice, Mercy and Faith

Today’s Gospel Text: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, justice and mercy and faith; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!

25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you cleanse the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of extortion and rapacity. 26 You blind Pharisee! first cleanse the inside of the cup and of the plate, that the outside also may be clean. Matt 23:23-26

Reflection: Some matters are more important than the others.

This does not mean that the important matters are solely so important that they make the less important matters defunct.

The Pharisees, on the other hand, were so notorious in the practice of the less important virtues, which may have been easy to practice and even observed by many that they failed in the practice of the more important virtue.

For this they face a very stringent rebuke by Jesus, who not only lay emphasis to the practicing of the lesser demands of the law but also laid a greater emphasis on the more important elements of the law.

Therefore according to Jesus, the more important matters are first and while practicing it the less important matter cannot be ignored.

The comparison that Jesus draws of such a negative and careless attitude towards the law of God is unparalleled: “You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!” (vs. 24)

The danger of walking in the ways of the Pharisees exists even in our day and in ever newer ways.

The modern day Pharisees can be laying a great emphasis on the practice of the virtue of justice, mercy and faithfulness, which sometimes translates into modern day obedience to authorities, but these themselves may lack in the very practice of it.

The emphasis of Jesus is clear; what he expects of the Pharisees and all his followers is the practice of this virtue in their lives and not to fight or labor to establish a society of justice, mercy and faith based on human agenda.

And how is this justice, mercy and faithfulness lived?

The primary way in which one lives the value of justice is by giving the obeisance to God, as revealed by Jesus. Not to acknowledge God, as revealed by Jesus, as one’s Father is the greatest injustice, far greater than any oppression and marginalization of a fellow human being.

Like the Pharisees who were instrumental in crucifying Jesus we too could be unjustly crucifying Christ once again even though we claim to be followers of him.

Nor can we show mercy to others if we do not show (give) our brothers and sisters, in decay, the path of life through faith.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to be your instrument of justice, mercy and faith.

Favor of Men

Today’s Gospel Text: "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who would enter to go in. 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you traverse sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.

16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If any one swears by the temple, it is nothing; but if any one swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.' 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, 'If any one swears by the altar, it is nothing; but if any one swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.' 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; 21 and he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it; 22 and he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it. Matt 23:13-22

Reflection: If you thought that people don’t allow the other to prosper or progress or achieve the essential things of life purely out of jealousy then it is not true.

One could even be doing so out of ignorance and this ignorance has no excuse because it is steeped in sin and to remain in the state of sin is not essentially steeped in ignorance. (cfr. Rom. 1:19-23)

In other words there is a reason behind this ignorance or this ignorance is a byproduct of a deeper malaise which is broadly classified as sin or a deliberate attempt at suppressing the truth of God, who alone can bring us out of dark situation.

What is that sin that leads one to even remain ignorant and jeopardizes the salvation of many around them?

It is the sin of allowing oneself to be steeped in all that is unclean, even the pleasures and daily routine of life, and leaving the search of the highest truth out of ones purview.

Some are in the truth and yet far from it, it is like in a ocean of water and yet not able to find the pure water to quench their thirst.

The Pharisees by virtue of their special call to devote themselves to the word had the means and the knowledge to respond to God’s constant call.

They had the ocean of knowledge about God and his ways and yet failed to render him the glory and praise because in all this they sought their own glory and the pleasure of wanting the approval of men.

How can you believe, who receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? John 5:44

Not that all Pharisees came under this category but many of them did on account of their pride and elitism and thus became an obstacle for others to enter the kingdom and hence Jesus had to say:

"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who would enter to go in. (vs. 13)

Hence if there is a sin that we need to avoid which is that of the Pharisees.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to humbly seek you and your ways and to please you in all situations and not to seek the approval of men. (cfr. Gal. 1:10)

Today’s Gospel Text: He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 And some one said to him, "Lord, will those who are saved be few?" And he said to them, 24 "Strive to enter by the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the householder has risen up and shut the door, you will begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, open to us.' He will answer you, 'I do not know where you come from.' 26 Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.' 27 But he will say, 'I tell you, I do not know where you come from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity!' 28 There you will weep and gnash your teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves thrust out. 29 And men will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last." Luke 13:22-30

Reflection: Why did Jesus not directly answer the most important question, which not all may ask and yet could trouble many?

"Lord, will those who are saved be few?" (vs. 23b)

In not answering the question directly Jesus is leaving space open for the many to be saved.

He is also revealing to us those categories likely to be saved and those who are not going to be saved is not already ordained or pre-destined by God as some would hold.

This also means that each one on this earth have an opportunity to be saved if only they choose to enter by the narrow door.

Jesus is that door through which men must enter in order to be saved; this door, Jesus Christ, which is that narrow door that leads to eternal life. (cfr. Jn. 10: 9)

Therefore, according to the parable, those who are not saved will be the ones who will be on the outside of the door, because they never tried to enter in but yet did plenty of good works in his name.

Apart from him the work, the labor, that is put in is that of iniquity and so they are termed by Jesus as “workers of iniquity”.

Finding themselves outside they will now knock and knock, and question the door keeper on why in spite of their good work, done in his name, they should not enter through the door of life.

Too Late! Once the door is closed through death or deliberate separation by choice then there is no hope.

No wonder there is a great need felt by the many in the Church, even in our days, to carry the saving message of the gospel to all men, so that people of good will may believe in it and work earnestly in him to carry on with his mandate that saves.

Prayer: Lord, I too want to be your instrument, willing to enter by the narrow door which is you.

Is He the One?

Today’s Gospel Text: Philip found Nathan'a-el, and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." 46 Nathan'a-el said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." 47 Jesus saw Nathan'a-el coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" 48 Nathan'a-el said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." 49 Nathan'a-el answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" 50 Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." 51 And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man." John 1:45-51

Reflection: Who is it that Philip has found that he is so excited about to tell Nathanael about him?

What is so special about the man that he has found and what differences will that make to their lives?

Has there been in history or have we heard of people, in history or in our contemporary life situation, who have been in search of individuals who will make a difference?

Yes, I suppose, when people see the evil around, the frustration and pain of seeing a corrupt world and growing sinfulness and wickedness all around then they begin to look out for a savior.

This look out is normally by way of a political figure, Many in Israel even looked at Jesus from that angle.

But the reality is this; every age and in every moment of history we see evil, sin and wickedness growing and when it grows to the hilt then people either look to religion or to some divine intervention or more so, the majority look for a political figure to bail them out.

Many dictators come to power on the basis of these needs of the individuals and people who backed them up as saviors; whether it was Hitler or Stalin or Mussolini, etc

Even in a democratic set-up you could have such surreptitious dictators in power, who work by manipulate norms and manipulating the minds of the gullible, with idealistic assurances but fortunately, they don’t last long because of the democratic bind which prevent holding of power and position for long.

But in the meanwhile they may do much and irretrievable damage to the society over which they have influence over.

Can humans hit right on the target when they keep looking for a savior?

If they fail to see in Jesus and in his cross the time tested savior, for now and for all eternity, then they are on their way to doom and will never be able to see the insidious and surreptitious evil in the assurance that comes from these individuals who pledge more than the God above.

Prayer: Lord, save your people from every deception and not to be carried away by false assurances and promises.

Great Commandment

Today’s Gospel Text: But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sad'ducees, they came together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him. 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" 37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets." Matt 22:34-40

Reflection: What do you call this gathering together of the Pharisees as soon as Jesus silenced the Sadducees?

Isn't it this coming together of people against an injustice, apparently, perpetuated by Jesus a great sign of unity and love among these and that too for a cause?

Yes, it can be possible that Jesus was an unjust man, a false teacher according to these highly learned intellectuals, of whom one was a lawyer: which means a man well versed in the scriptures and the law of Moses.

And who will normally challenge known intellectuals and more so if they are in power?

In a way they were the democratic majority against the individual minority of the sacred Word of God; Jesus Christ.

May be they looked at Jesus as that trickster who deceives the people and indeed they seem to have that special knowledge of the truth but they were not clear about its application.

What a question to ask? Only the intellectual and wise could answer the question?

It was like asking a spiritual question in a science class: what gives life to the body and if you answer it by your knowledge of science, because you are in a science class, you would fail the test, because the answer is never directly in the plane of ordinary thinking.

Similarly, the answer to the lawyers question was never directly in the Ten Commandments which God had given to the Israelites.

Though the Pharisees knew the answer or at least had an inkling of it, yet they did not seem to measure up to it.

This mystery of history keeps repeating itself and we could likewise have modern day Pharisees too, who could be well versed with doctorates and licentiates but may never measure up to the truth of the Gospel.

Let’s be practical and seek to live out the commandment and not just know the commandment.

Also let us never be deceived by those who would not like to know the commandment or faith and want to be purely practical and want to live the faith of Christ without knowing it.

Prayer: Lord, even your foolishness far surpasses human wisdom; teach us to be wise in your ways. (cfr. 1 Cor. 1:25)

Spurn not

Today’s Gospel Text: And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, 2 "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, 3 and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come. 4 Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.' 5 But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, 6 while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. 7 The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.' 10 And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11 "But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; 12 and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.' 14 For many are called, but few are chosen." Matt 22:1-14

Reflection: This to me is one of the most touching parables of Jesus, with a profound and deep meaning to it.

Yet it is a parable, which when one reflects on deeply, seems to make us wonder whether this is indeed the reality of life.

Who would not like to enjoy themselves at a marriage feast and go and help themselves to things?

In poor countries and among the poor the reality is very different; they would most willingly accept an invitation to a marriage feast because the food would indeed be special and enjoyable to them.

It would be like, 'once in a lifetime offer' to them, which will never easily be spurned by them.

But to the rich, a mass cooked marriage meal may not be a great attraction because the rich are a satisfied lot with their taste buds.

And if you thought this parable has only to do with food, then you are sadly mistaken and you may end up only rejecting all the rich from the gamut of salvation, though sadly many would belong to the category of the materially rich.

A good food brings joy and satisfies the hunger, it pleases the eye and gratifies the stomach so also there are things which we have access to by our own will and working, which makes us walk like independent people, not requiring the need of God in our lives.

To begin with, there are the many spirituality’s in the market place and that too many of them on sale, which satisfies the hunger of the soul, which has not really tasted the real food which God has to offer in Christ Jesus.

Then there are exercises and specialized food which promises the sky and does offer one a spirit of well being minus God and his moral teachings.

Then we have modern new age gurus, which even includes the psychologists, who easily replace God in people’s lives.

What is more these avenue’s help us to continue with the most comfortable routine of life, and makes us even fit into it, so as not to disturb the fragile peace.

Aware of these things, the parable reminds us that he is a God with a mission, and his servants must still carry on with the mission to save humanity by inviting mankind to the banquet, through the proclamation of the Gospel.

Prayer: Lord God, may we never spurn your invitation, which implies our good and seek to proclaim it to others. .

Just Wages

Today’s Gospel Text: "For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place; 4 and to them he said, 'You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.' So they went. 5 Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to them, 'Why do you stand here idle all day?' 7 They said to him, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard too.' 8 And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.' 9 And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. 10 Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. 11 And on receiving it they grumbled at the householder, 12 saying, 'These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.' 13 But he replied to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what belongs to you, and go; I choose to give to this last as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?' 16 So the last will be first, and the first last." Matt 20:1-16

Reflection: The ways of the people of this world is so different, when they hire laborers or give they will see how best they could exploit the situation.

If one sees some of the incentive scheme offered by employers, it is either a win-win situation for the employers and employees or it could be purely weighing heavily on the side of the employers.

Even in a win-win situation, the odds could be in favor of the employer and it starts with the very motive itself of gain or profit:

Why are incentives given in the first place, it is given because we who are animated or motivated by rewards may do better?

A just and higher wage is indeed a big incentive or motivation to work, for the many.

Though we may often feel embarrassed to reveal this dark side of our innate motivating desire yet the truth remains and rarely are individuals not motivated by these factors.

If we are not motivated by incentives in particular areas then there are other areas to explore but the human reality remains.

Sometimes a good cause to work can be a great motivating factor too, just as there can be psychological motivators .

Even God in Christ Jesus was motivated to incarnate and die for us so that we may be saved from eternal condemnation. The key motivating factor here was our salvation.

Since many incentives are realized after the work is done therefore one key factor that can become an obstacle to achievements of any target is the element of trust in the offer.

Christ Jesus proves his credentials of not only being trustworthy but adds to it by being generous to the ultimate: "Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?" (vs. 15)

Thus the greatest ever incentive and motivation to follow Christ is before us: even if we are the last to be employed by him we can still be first, thanks to his faithfulness and generosity. (cfr. 16)

Prayer: Lord, I want to avail of the graces and gifts that you desire to give me when I to serve you.

Riches and Wealth

Today’s Gospel Text: And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 25 When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" 26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." 27 Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?" 28 Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. 30 But many that are first will be last, and the last first. Matt 19:23-30

Reflection: “Wealth and riches are in his house; and his righteousness endures forever.” Ps 112:3

These are the blessings the Psalmist proclaims on those who fear the Lord and walks in the wisdom of his commandments.

Like most of those modern day prosperity gospel preachers most of the Jews always believed that it was a blessing to be rich and a curse to be poor.

No wonder the dedicated disciples found the statement of Jesus shocking and difficult to accept; for they had grown up with a mindset that talked about riches and prosperity for the righteous.

Could they be following Christ Jesus because they saw him as a future investment worth more than gold? By his walk and demeanor, Christ Jesus, was assuredly a pathway to prosperity. They would have to endure his poverty but for a little while only.

"Who then can be saved?" (vs. 25b) was a statement made by these dedicated disciples, with great astonishment.

It seems that Jesus was really against riches and wealth and against the rich and the wealthy?

We could have riches and wealth and can get so enamored by it that we could end up worshipping them.

We could miss out on the purpose and plan that God has for each one of us; a plan for our happiness and eternity.

But with riches we can create our own world of happiness, apart from God; No wonder money can make people happy but God can do it better; he can make us happy even in the face of want and poverty.

How can any human being be so enamored by the gifts that they forget the giver of all gifts?

Yet this is the greatest reality with humans, they keep gathering up the gifts and likewise treat their children too in the same way.

Prayer: The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; thou holdest my lot. Ps 16:5

Good Works

Today’s Gospel Text: And behold, one came up to him, saying, "Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?" 17 And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments." 18 He said to him, "Which?" And Jesus said, "You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 20 The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what do I still lack?" 21 Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." 22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions. Matt 19:16-22

Reflection: We know that mere good deeds can’t save us from eternal damnation and St. Paul in his letter to the Ephesians reminds us of it:

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God - not because of works, lest any man should boast. Eph 2:8-9

Whether we work to liberate people from every form of oppression, and alleviate the sufferings of the marginalized or work towards the emancipation of the poor and those on the periphery of society or visit the sick and the homeless or feed the hungry or clothe the naked, it can by itself never gain for us eternal life.

But does he not assure us in the gospel of Matthew; eternal life for feeding the hungry and the poor and for clothing them and visiting them in prison?

Many interpret Matthew’s text by not reading it in its context and not interpreting it the way the Lord has clearly presented it to us.

Does the Lord also not warn us when he says: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”? Matt 7:21

So the key is to do all things is by abiding in Christ and doing it according to his will.

In other words, it means the work of faith, beginning with Jesus and ending with Jesus.

There are many who have plunged themselves in works of mercy and in so called Christian charity without keeping the mandate of Christ and his vision for humanity close at heart.

The gospel that they preach is that of mere human emancipation based on materialism and at the most human development; a purely economic or socio-psychological exercise.

For them the gospel of Christ is powerless to change society and if in any way Christ exists in their agenda then it is to gather funds in his name or as a cover of light to hide the dark.

Prayer: O God, the source of all goodness, help us to imitate you and your good ways which you have revealed to us in your Son Jesus that we may always walk in his grace.

Fire

Today’s Gospel Text: "I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled! 50 I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished! 51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; 52 for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three; 53 they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." Luke 12:49-53

Reflection: What would happen if the Lord were to cast that real fire upon the earth? Would we have survived his wrath?

But fortunately, for us, the fire which the Lord came to cast on the earth is the fire of mercy; the fire that has the power to purify us and save us.

Yet every act of God’s mercy may not save us and this is the sad reality of life which we tend to overlook.

When my enemy is drowning and I in my mercy and compassion go to save him, he may harden his heart further and at that time may even feel extra charged with a wisdom based on pride.

He may now look at me as a fallen creature, worse than a crawling vermin and gloat at the superior wisdom he has over me; for such is the power of hate and enmity.

God in Christ Jesus nevertheless still comes for those blessed ones who acknowledge that on their own strength they cannot save themselves.

Jesus through his death on the cross opened the windows of fire, the Holy Spirit, to all who can accept him.

The Holy Spirit convicts and purifies us with his fire, of sins that separate us from God, burns away the hardened heart and makes us obedient and submissive to the will of the Father.

He does not do it forcibly against our will but with our cooperation.

On the other hand when he does this work in us he makes the others around us uncomfortable and hence the division that is brought about in society.

Only the devil and the children of Satan will work towards a unity of humanity in such circumstances, based on what apparently seems to be good human values, which only produces short term gains.

As for those who are purified by this fire, they carry in their hearts the same fire to reach out with the love of Christ, primarily through the proclamation of the Gospel of Christ.

Prayer: Send forth Your Spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the earth. Ps. 104:30

Prayers

Today’s Gospel Text: Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people; 14 but Jesus said, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." 15 And he laid his hands on them and went away. Matt 19:13-15

Reflection: We pray and pray and many a times nothing seems to happen.

Yet some are dedicated to their prayer life; they will have a committed time for personal prayer, for family prayer, for community prayer, for personal devotions, etc.

Life goes on and many a times nothing seems to happen, there is no fruit thereof or our personal expectations are never met.

Do we still need to continue in such type of prayer?

May be at times there is always the need to make an adjustment or a small correction in the way we pray and what we pray for.

Each time it is a ever new field we seem to enter; of learning newer ways of relating with someone who is almighty and powerful.

From the word of God we are encouraged and feel motivated that things may not always happen and yet we need to pray.

Prayer is a sure investment which will reap its reward; what is important is to approach God like a little child who may not even know the fruit they have received.

Even the scripture here does not reveal to us what happened when Jesus prayed over those little children but what the scripture does reveal is this:

That Jesus was insistent that the little children should not be prevented from receiving his blessings despite the opposition from his own dedicated disciples.

He even rebukes them for what seemed like a mere blessing; for any blessing from the Lord, may appear as a mere ritual, cannot be an empty exercise.

Hence know this: Nothing may happen in our daily commitment to the Lord in prayer but there is a blessing which we receive and which the Lord longs to give us. Our eyes may not be able to see but it is surely there, stay at it.

Prayer: Lord, I resolve to sit in your presence daily and in a dedicated way believing that you are there with me to bless me in ways beyond my imagination.

Unity in Marriage

Today’s Gospel Text: And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?" 4 He answered, "Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder." 7 They said to him, "Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?" 8 He said to them, "For your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another, commits adultery."

10 The disciples said to him, "If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is not expedient to marry." 11 But he said to them, "Not all men can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it." Matt 19:3-12

Reflection: The many complications faced in married life is sometimes difficult to fully comprehend.

Living one’s vocation to marriage is sometimes an uphill task.

When it comes to the difficulties faced by husband and wife we do not know in which direction the balance is tilted, who faces more of the brunt.

But in all probability it should be the weaker sex who must be facing the most as corruption hits the powerful more than the weaker. So the male as head of the family and on account of the power he wields may tend to corrupt it.

Similarly, the woman too may carry her own seductive power or her subtle domination over her husband to corrupt a situation and bring ruin to the institution of marriage.

There are sometimes irreconcilable differences between husband and wife, when those who once affirmed that they can’t do without each other now wow that they can very well do without each other.

The bitterness and the souring of the relationship has already reached its zenith and there seem to be no way out, other than a divorce.

In this great conflict between the spouses, the message of Jesus speaks to us loud and clear:

"Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder." (vss. 4-6)

Too difficult to practice in situations when there are severe irreconcilable differences and any move that goes against the will of God amounts to a failure not just on the part of the couples and their family but also of the whole church, even if it be legitimized, sometimes, in the garb of annulments.

If there is one primary assertion that I would make is this: Do the couple believe, before they come to get married and in their course of their married life, that it is God who has put them together and let no man put them asunder?

The matter doesn’t end there but it could be the beginning of a decision to live with the living God as the center of one’s married life, seeking to please him rather than pleasing themselves.

Prayer: Lord bless all those couples united in matrimony that they may realize that their unity comes from you and they have no right to seek division.

Today’s Gospel Text: In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechari'ah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." 46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, 52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever." 56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home. Luke 1:39-56

Reflection: The argument presented is this: How can Mary be called the mother of God? Does God have a mother or can God have a mother?

The Catholics have always addressed Mary as the Mother of God and even celebrate with great solemnity the feast of Mary as mother of God. (1st January)

Then does God really have a mother?

Plainly speaking God does not have a mother nor does Jesus the eternal word of God was ‘begotten not made’ (Apostles Creed) but eternally existed with the Father and the Holy Spirit in their triune nature as one God.

But when God chose to become incarnate among us as a man, for our salvation, he chose the womb of an ordinary simple creature; Mary the woman of Nazareth.

Jesus the God made man, having the divine and human nature in himself, was born of the Virgin Mary.

Rationally seen and interpreted; this action of God, with whom nothing is impossible, can remain an insipid theological truth if not looked at as the great love action of God. (Cfr. Jn. 3:16)

This truth is not just proclaimed in the great tradition of the church but is also found in scripture when Elizabeth filled with the Holy Spirit exclaims: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” (Vs. 42) and in the same breath she further exclaims:

“And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (vs. 43)

Surely, this can’t be flesh and blood who revealed this to her but her Father in heaven who through the action of the Holy Spirit who revealed this to her.

For further affirmation we have the angel affirming the same twice before:

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; Luke 1:32a

Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. Luke 1:35d,e

Prayer: God our Father, increase our faith in the motherhood of Mary and the special place she enjoys in our salvation, through her assumption.
