Why I Use Trail Cameras To Scout Deer Trails

Well bad news here in Kauai, first after retrieving the camera which was on a heavy trail for 2 weeks I got zero pics of deer. Turns out that pig hunters were also running dogs in the same area which moved the deer out.
To add insult to injury the weekend that I was picked to hunt was a total rain out. I don't mean a drizzel I mean downpours that you couldn't see 3 feet.

On another note:
I have noticed a large surge in traffic from hunters looking for information
on " What to do if you don't see deer at your stand ?" Also "Will a ladder stand spook deer ?" Fron here on in I will answer questions to the hot search terms hunters are using to find my genuine hunting information.

I will answer the ladder question here. A few things come in to play when using a ladder stand. First it is obviously larger and easier to see. So I make sure to place the stand in the hunting area as early as possible for 3 specific reasons.

1. The longer it is setup the more accustomed the deer will become to seeing it and it won't gain unnecessary attention from deer while your in it. Granted you don't make any of the common mistakes tree stand hunters commit that are covered in my book.

2. Since assembly and setup take more time and hand contact with the stand. You need more time for your scent to disperse. You should also wear rubber gloves to avoid contaminating it with your scent more than needed. I like to give at least 2 weeks for it clear out. Your also need time for the floor of the woods to clear of your scent. So take all necessary precautions to avoid stinking up your area.

3. This is the main reason I don't use ladder stands, your stuck in one area which forces your to use the same tree day after day. This stinks up the area. Any buck worth his nose will avoid that area like the plague. The deer realizes that has a permanent scent that doesn't belong in the woods. To learn methods of scent control check out my site.

Scouting New Area This Weekend Setting Up Trail Camera

Will be scouting a new are to hunt here on Kauai. I have never been to this spot before so I will be relying on some locals to atleast point me in the right direction. Will be putting in the digital trail camera to see if the activity is from bucks or pigs. Extensive coverage of camera usage in my book Deerseeker which is having a $2.95 trial offer right now. If it rains it is hard to tell the tracks apart. Since we have deer, goats and pigs in the same area.

New warm weather hunting tactics

Hello fellow hunters, as a heads up to everyone I have recently moved to Hawaii because of my wifes career. Now before you ask Yes they do have deer here. In fact we have all kinds of strange critters since they were introduced and none of them are native.
We have Mouflon sheep, wild pigs like the ones you see on the show Lost. Black-tailed deer and mountain goats. All of which are open to hunting.
So as the season moves along I will post updates as to my successes and failures. I am now learning how to hunt deer when its 80 degrees and no snow. Also how the locals keep the flies off the meat and also keep it from spoiling in the heat. Some of the hunts are 2 days long in the canyon with no ice but the deer is still good when we get back home.
I will add a new chapter on this topic in my book which is being edited as we speak. Any one who gets a copy now will be eligible for the new copy free of charge.
Keep checking or link up the rss and keep up with the upcoming Hawaiian hunting adventures. I will also post some pics of the terrain. Talk about hiking I thought I was a good climber when I was in the Appalachian mountains in Pennsylvania. The volcano cliffs go straight up and down. Another reason I am glad I switched to rifle caliber pistol hunting. You need both your hands just to climb up and down the ravines.

Sorry for the delay I have been dealing with alot of things that don't have anything to do with hunting. Its been sucking up all my time. Since some of the info is for post season it will do you no good to read it in the fall when you haven't done your homework. Its been a succesful year over all for our family. Only one in our hunting group of 5 had to settle for just a doe and not a pair. How many people do you know with success like that. Been Checking for Rublines and Scrapes

Now is the time to be checking for rublines and scrapes. You want to find where the deer are on a reglular basis not just walking through now and then. This is why just looking for tracks is a waste of time. One or two deer walking back and forth make alot of tracks that looks like a lot of deer when its really not.

You also have no way of knowing if its a buck or two does unless you have scrape or buck rub activity. For more indepth knowledge of scrapes and rubs and what they mean. Order a copy of Deerseeker and you wont be disappointed.

Well my offline life has had some major changes that led to me being offline the entire summer. Getting Feeders Ready For Deer To Find Activity Spots

Well Now that all hunting and trapping is over in Pa.

I am baiting my spots and setting up cameras and trip wires to
see where I have he most activity

This greatly helps when you start scouting for whitetail activity
in the next season. You have a good idea where to start hunting.

Scouting is not proving to be productive just to cold

I was doing as much preseason scouting as I could and it just
went to 15 degrees for the past week. So the deer are not moving.

I have chose to stay in and instead of looking or deer spend my time
reading up on whitetails and see what others can teach me.

Now Is The Time To Find The Deers Natural Routine

Since all of the hunting is over in my area I start scouting and checking
sign to see where the deer move when not disturbed.

This gives me the best place to start the following season, keep a notebook
of all the information that you gather and you will start to see a trend of the most travelled
areas.

This is where I would put my stand the start of the following season after a determine
if its a buck or a doe.

Each Snow Fall Gives You Priceless Info

Make sure to get to your stand after each snow

Since we are having such a warm winter it makes is hard
to get info on the deers natural patterns. When there are no
hunters in the woods to push them around

Warm Weather Makes for Easy Scouting

Take advantage of the weather depending on where you live.

I have been out in the woods as much as my schedule will allow. I have
set up a new infrared camera to see the deer concentration in a new hunting area.

I will keep going to different spots until the next season. But this way I will have a good idea
of where the big buck are. Then I won't need to waste time finding the deer in the fall when
huntng approaches.

I can use the time to pinpoint a certain buck I found early. This has proven successful for me many times. Hopefully this helps you out in the upcoming seasons.

Last Day Of Pennsylvania Hunting Rained Out

Its warm but too wet rain all day.

I never hunt in the rain it takes away your ability to follow a blood trail which is very important no matter how you hunt.

I follow this rule no matter what the deer deserve enough respect to make sure you are going to recover what you shoot.

I would feel to guilty shooting a deer and then losing the trail in the rain when I knew better.

Weather is warmer work schedule is cold

Well we finally got a break in the cold and now I don't have time to get out in the woods.

Even if I miss the season I will be out as soon as possible to deploy my cameras and get those pics of the mature bucks that always get through the season.

Overslept Today and Missed a Great Chance to Hunt

Hard to get back into the sleep pattern of hunting

Its been too long since I went to bed and 9 to get up at 4. I tried to get up this morning but to no avail. I was just to tired and lacked alot of the desire I had in the fall.

I will try again next week and see how it goes I will definitely go to bed earlier than I did this time. I will also have all of my gear ready to go at the door. Then I won't have to look for it in the morning.

I will go over the checklist I have to make sure nothing gets forgotten. Since alot of my stuff has been unpacked for a few weeks now. Until then. Deerseeker

The Warm Winter Makes It Easier To Hunt Late Season Whitetail Deer

I usually don't get to hunt late season because it usually to cold.

It has been 40 degrees last week so all the snow is gone and you can sneak around in the woods looking for whitetail deer. I also take the time to find a few new trees for my stand next year.

I will then be able to save time when its time to start scouting for the fall archery season. I will focus on the the new trees and see which area seems to have the most promise to bag that monster buck.

I will use this time to go in areas I usually don't go during the season, since I don't use season time to scout. Now I can scout and hunt so if I don't shoot something it OK because I have my buck in the freezer.

I may stumble on a deer but if not I just use the time to find my way around new areas. I will update on how the hunting goes this week in the next post.

The Snow Is Gone Now Tracking Will Be Harder

After season snow tracking is one of my favorite ways to find those hidden bucks for the next season.

I was planning on marking some trails why out for muzzleloader season but all of the snow is gone. We had a 50 degree warm spell over christmas that has made it like spring.

I will need to go back to my preseason routine going back to the places that have the most frequent activity from my remote cameras.

Just Keep On Hunting Those Bucks

I never really hunted this season before but I have lots of new uses for deer meat so I want as much venison in the freezer as I can get.

My buthcher now makes deer hams and ring bologna and it is great. I love knowing what I am eating and that it isn't full of garbage meat.

If you find your deer fast and don't have to hunt for weeks to bag some meat. It does become very cost effective to hunt instead of buying all your meat.

How To Get The Most Out of Your Deer Meat

The way you freeze and pack your processed venison from the butcher affects how you will use it.

I always pack my steaks in packs no larger than I use at one time. Put all the burger in one pound packs. Also any smoked products also need to be frozen or they will get moldy.

All packs must be marked extremely well you think you will remember what it is but in a year you wont remember, trust me.

Deer Hunting is the Gift that keeps on Giving Now I Can Enjoy The Labors of My Hard Work

The dressed weight of the buck that I harvested this year was 160#. So far I have packaged 40# of steaks and cuts, 10# of ring bologna, 10# of chip steak and 30# of ground meat.

I use the methods outlined in The Beginners Guide To Finding Whitetail Deer. It has proven to save me lots of time and makes it much easier for my wife to use the meat later in different dishes. Thus making it possible to not buy any beef.
