Dear friends,

It’s time once again to dust off your dancin’ shoes, find your inner clown, and come on down to our 2nd annual Living Dream Arts fundraiser extravaganza! We’ve got a swanky new San Francisco venue, an incredible line-up of live bands, fantabulous circus acts, steamy hot burlesque, a klown that knows how to throw down, and raffle prizes that sound too good to be true.

Add to that some delicious food, a full bar, super pro clown and face painters, and a sprinkle of circus magic and, well, we reckon this is a night not to be missed. Not too mention that the venue and the entertainment have all been graciously donated and that means every penny you spend on raffle tickets and admission goes straight to our charitable programs. Let’s just call it a win win win win kinda situation.

Free circus shows and workshops at Bay Area women’s shelters, schools, youth organizations, and senior centers
Free circus shows and workshops along the route of our 2013 Dreamtime Circus tour, bringing the magic of the circus to Hopi villages in Arizona, youth organizations in Albuquerque and New Orleans, a small town Texas school, and to foster kids and autistic children in Austin.

sending love and blessing to you all; now is the time to BE yourself, to love yourself fully and to not be afraid of who you really are. The world needs your light and your truth.
the last 2 weeks sacred journey on my Awakening the Divine tour has been an incredible, sublime, magical and fun one, with the perfect group of people – I am so grateful.

Forgiveness, accountability, surrender, patience, balancing the feminine/masculine, gratitude, thinking and breathing through the heart, and remembering your power and the magic all around you at every moment, are all the teachings we received over and over and over.

Wishing you a very happy Solstice and happy new era in your life

Is it really August already? 2012 is moving fast and so are we. So let’s cut the chit chat and dive right in…

Expanding our VAGABOOM! After-school Art Programs

Thanks to continued support from the Lowell Berry Foundation and the Squid and Squash Foundation, we’ve been offering free after-school programming in Fine Art, Circus Arts, Music, and Theatre/Mime to youth at United Playaz in San Francisco and EOYDC in East Oakland. These programs are giving dozens of kids an opportunity to learn new skills and express themselves creatively in a fun and positive environment, and we’ve gotten tremendous feedback about our programs from both the kids and the community organizations.

And now, thanks to a new grant from The James A. Doolittle Foundation, we’ll be reaching out to even more youth this summer and fall, bringing both our VAGABOOM! after-school art programs and our Dreamtime Circus performances to new community organizations throughout the Bay Area. One of the organizations we are very excited to work with is The Riley Center in San Francisco which provides shelter and services for women in abusive relationships and their children.

If you know of a community organization in the Bay Area that would benefit from our arts education curriculums and/or circus shows, please respond to this email and we’ll see if it’s a good fit for our programs. And, if you’re a teacher or skilled artist with a passion for sharing your unique talents with Bay Area Youth, we would love to hear from you! Please send an email to dee@vagaboom.org.

Dreamtime selected to perform in The Great Circle at Burning Man 2012

For the sixth consecutive year, Dreamtime Circus will be performing in The Great Circle at theBurning Man Festival later this month. Each year there is more and more competition to be one of the 28 fire troupes selected to perform around the man at the crescendo of the week long festival, moments before the wooden effigy is set alight. But each year our video submission has grown stronger, thereby allowing us to hold our position as new groups from around the country apply for a spot in the circle.

Congratulations to the 26 fire performers, 5 musicians, 8 safety & support crew members, and our photographer and videographer for making this happen. It’s a great honor and opportunity to participate in what is, perhaps, the grandest of all fire shows on the planet!

And congratulations to the other troupes that made it. We look forward to performing next to such an incredible array of fire artists.

We’ll be opening our final pre-festival rehearsal to families in the West Oakland neighborhood where we rehearse on August 22nd. If you’re going to Burning Man this year, we invite you to watch our on-playa rehearsal at sunset on Thursday, August 30th near 4:20 and walk-in. Or, you could attempt to find us in The Great Circle just before the burn. And, whether you’re going to Burning Man or not, check out our video here!

Egyptian Goddess for Moto Sketch

My friend Darnel Tasker asked me if I would model as an ‘Egyptian Goddess’ for her artist collective called ‘Moto Sktech’, of which she is the creator. Held once a month at Tosca in North Beach, Mission Motorcycles provides a different moto for each session and Darnel coordinates the models and the event.

I have never modeled for a group of sketch artists before. It was a really beautiful yet challenging experience. There were about 12 artists. 4 x 5 minute poses, followed by a few 10, 15 and finally 2 x 20 minute poses. Staying completely still is something I enjoy doing daily through my meditation practice. Doing the same thing but in awkward positions and in front of people was a different story. Arms burning, legs going totally numb, thighs shaking… I found 2 things that kept me going throughout the session…. 1. the humour of seeing the heads of the artists pop up and down in my peripheral as if they were little birds eating yet looking around watchfully and 2. Luckily I was able to travel beyond the whole body discomfort and found a place where the Goddess took me. Although I did not get to photograph all the images, here are some I was lucky enough to capture. Many thanks to Darnel and to the talented artists whom I had the pleasure of working with.

My role in upcoming feature film Dont Shoot! Im The Guitar Man

I’m very excited to announce that I will helm the role of ‘Helena’ in upcoming feature film by Prodigy Motion Pictures ‘Dont Shoot! Im the Guitar Man’; a true story based on the work of musician Buzzy Martin played by actor Eric Roberts. Buzzy taught music to the prisoners of San Quentin for 6 years and took his experiences to the schools of at-risk youth, where he inspired many to put down the guns and pick up an instrument.

This project and its ‘Education Not Incarceration’ movement is so inspiring to me and goes hand in hand with the work we do at my C0-run organization, Living Dream Arts - where we work with at-risk youth through interactive arts programs for free and low-cost.
