It has been a long time since my last post. Life kind of took over and I haven't had time to write. I am still as pro-life as ever, but I have shifted my focus from public activism to private, one-on-one conversations with those I encounter every day. I believe that we can do a lot to change hearts and minds by engaging those around us in daily, individual dialog. Relationships are important because we want people to listen.

Hopefully I will have more time to write and reflect in the coming months. Stay tuned!

2012 Presidential Candidates on Catholic Issues

As I did for the 2008 Presidential campaign, I have used the US Catholic Bishops' criteria published in the US Conference of Catholic Bishops document on Faithful Citizenship to evaluate the top candidates for the 2012 Presidential election.

I recommend that Catholics choose freely between Rick Santorum and Ron Paul for the Republican presidential nomination.

Newt Gingrich's problem areas were his lack of opposition to the use of human embryonic stem cells for research and human cloning and his willingness to use torture.

Mitt Romney's problem areas were his support of assisted suicide and so-called mercy killing, willingness to fund abortions and abortifacient drugs in healthcare, support of human embryonic stem cell research, and willingness to use torture.

Rick Santorum lost some points for not opposing the use of torture, and Ron Paul lost some points for his unwillingness to outlaw abortion and human embryonic stem cell research at the federal level.

There are eight incontrovertible issues where there is a clear correct choice involving serious matter:

Oppose abortion;
Oppose assisted suicide and euthanasia;
Oppose research resulting in the destruction of human embryos;
Oppose human cloning;
Oppose the use of torture;
Oppose the targeting of non-combatants;
Oppose all forms of racism;
Support marriage as between one man and one woman.

The candidates I considered were:

Newt Gingrich (R);
Barack Obama (D);
Ron Paul (R);
Mitt Romney (R);
Rick Santorum (R).

I gave a weight of 15 points to each of the big eight issues (120 possible points), and there was a clear split in the candidates:

Rick Santorum (R) - 115;
Ron Paul (R) - 115.

In the middle of the pack were:

Newt Gingrich (R) - 91;
Mitt Romney (R) - 80.

And bringing up the rear:

Barack Obama (D) - 45.

Here are how the candidates fared on each of the big eight issues:

There are 22 other issues that, while important, do not hold the weight that the big eight issues hold. These issues I gave a maximum of 5 points each, and they only become important in distinguishing between candidates who are strong on the big eight issues above:

Oppose capital punishment;
Responsible transition in Iraq & Afghanistan;
Work to avoid war & promote peace while dealing with terrorism;
Ethical treatment for undocumented immigrants;
Support temporary worker programs & clear path to permanent residency for immigrants;
Secure borders from illegal immigration;
Support responsible use of media;
Affordable & accessible health care;
Health care policies allow for conscientious objection;
No contraceptive or abortive mandates in health programs;
Support choice in education;
Support for private and religious schools and teachers;
Support fair wages & programs to decrease unemployment;
Support safe and affordable housing;
Welfare should reduce poverty & lead to financial independence;
Encourage abstinence, child birth, and adoption over contraception and abortion;
Support sustainable agriculture and food security;
Support environmental policies that respect God's creation;
Preserve faith-based groups;
Work to alleviate global poverty;
Promote religious liberty and other basic human rights worldwide;
Promote peaceful resolution in the Israel, Palestine & Lebanon conflict.

Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich all scored between 86-87 points on these issues (78-79%).

Mitt Romney scored 75 (68%)

Barack Obama scored 54 (49%)

Therefore, based on my research, analysis, and the US Catholic Bishops' guidelines on the issues, faithful Catholics should pick between Rick Santorum and Ron Paul for the 2012 Presidential election.

If you have any input on the candidates' positions on these issues, please let me know. I did my best to research their positions, but some of the issues are difficult to discern.

Exposing Planned Parenthood's Cover-up of Child Sex Trafficking

Caught on Tape: Planned Parenthood Aids Pimp’s Underage Sex Ring

NEW JERSEY – February 1, 2011– A Planned Parenthood manager in New Jersey coaches a man and a woman posing as sex traffickers how to secure secret abortions, STD testing, and contraception for their female underage sex slaves, and make their whole operation “look as legit as possible” in an undercover video released this morning.

Clinic manager Amy Woodruff, LPN, of Planned Parenthood Central New Jersey’s Perth Amboy center, warns the pimp and his prostitute to have their trafficked underage girls lie about their age to avoid mandatory reporting laws, promising, “even if they lie, just say, ‘Oh he's the same age as me, 15,’…it's just that mainly 14 and under we have to, doesn't matter if their partner's the same age, younger, whatever, 14 and under we have to report.” She says, “For the most part, we want as little information as possible.”

Woodruff also recommends how the pimp can get his prostitutes cheaper contraception by claiming they are “students”: “If they're minors, put down that they're students. Yeah, just kind of play along that they’re students--we want to make it look as legit as possible.”

If one of the young trafficked girls needs an abortion, Woodruff refers the pimp and prostitute to the Metropolitan Medical Association, where “their protocols aren’t as strict as ours and they don’t get audited the same way that we do.” The prostitute in the video asks how long after the abortion until the girls can have sex again, and when Woodruff says “minimum of 2 weeks,” she asks what sex acts the girls could still do to make money. Woodruff advises, “Waist up, or just be that extra action walking by” to advertise sex to potential clients.

Sex trafficking is punishable under federal law and carries a potential life sentence. The new video is released by Live Action, a pro-life new media organization led by 22-year-old Lila Rose. The video airs just days after Planned Parenthood’s leadership suspected the sting operation and sought an FBI probe of Live Action in order to deter the release of the exposé. Live Action is sending full footage to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, NJ Attorney General Paula Dow, officials at the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and other law enforcement officials, requesting federal and state investigations into Planned Parenthood’s sexual abuse and sex trafficking cover up.

“This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Planned Parenthood intentionally breaks state and federal laws and covers up the abuse of the young girls it claims to serve,” said Lila Rose, President of Live Action. “Time and time again, Planned Parenthood has sent young girls back into the arms of their abusers. They don’t deserve a dime of the hundreds of millions they receive in federal funding from taxpayers. Congress must cease funding and the Department of Justice should investigate this corrupt organization immediately.”

Live Action has previously released more than a dozen hidden camera videos from ten states and shows the alarming trend of illegal Planned Parenthood activity including cover-up of sexual abuse of minors, the skirting of parental consent laws, citing unscientific and fabricated medical information to convince women to have abortions, and Planned Parenthood’s willingness to accept donations earmarked to abort African-American babies.

Infamous Abortionist Carhart to Relocate to Maryland

Third-trimester abortionist Leroy Carhart has announced plans to relocate his late-term abortion practice from Nebraska to both Maryland and Iowa. Carhart is the plaintiff who challenged the federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban all the way to the Supreme Court.

This is a sad indictment on our State. We have legitimate businesses leaving our State at an alarming rate and late-term abortionists relocating here. Maryland already has the third highest abortion rate in the country and has some of the most permissive abortion laws in the USA.

Maryland:

has never banned partial-birth abortion,
is one of only 16 states without a meaningful parental notification law for minors,
is one of only five states that voluntarily pays for abortions with State Medicaid funds,
is one of only four states that does not collect any data on abortions,
is the only state in our nation that gives civil immunity to abortionists who fail to obtain proper informed consent.

We still have a lot of work to do.

Archdiocese Focuses on Ending Abortion in Catonsville

The Archdiocese of Baltimore is focusing its resources on a coordinated pro-life prayer campaign that will mobilize hundreds of Marylanders to pray outside of the Hillcrest abortion facility in Catonsville from September 22nd through October 31st. The campaign is called "40 Days for Life" and is united with 238 other locations across the US, Canada, and around the world.

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life effort that consists of:

* 40 days of fervent prayer, coupled with some type of fasting, if possible;
* 40 days of peaceful vigil at Hillcrest or another abortion facility.

We Pray for:

* Women and their babies who are in danger of abortion;
* Healing of men and women who carry the pain of a past abortion;
* Workers at abortion clinics, and local, state and national leaders who misguidedly support abortion.

Hillcrest is the longest-operating abortion facility in Maryland, having been in operation since shortly after the Roe v. Wade decision allowed for nationwide abortion on demand in the US in 1973. This specific facility is responsible for the deaths of 30,000 to 60,000 American babies and the wounding of just as many mothers and families through abortion.

Winners and Losers in Annapolis - 2010 General Assembly

In Maryland, it's obvious the truth has been exchanged for a lie, at least among a majority of our lawmakers. Read Delegate Impallaria's assessment of the recently concluded legislative session, and pay close attention to who the real winners and losers were...

"As the 2010 General Assembly session comes to a close, first let me say that it has been an honor to represent you and be your voice of common sense in the House of Delegates.

"The past eight years have been quite an eye-opener for me. I originally believed that the General Assembly as a body worked to protect and defend the citizens of the State of Maryland. What I have learned is that in reality they are working to have more control, power, and oversight into our everyday lives, and are more proficient in creating problems than in solving them.

"Even though session ends tonight at midnight, we can already name some winners and losers. Let’s start with the WINNERS.

"FELONS, including murders, rapists, and child molesters, whose voting rights have been restored and defended

"GANGS, who have a strong voice in Annapolis protecting their rights to operate their criminal organizations

"ILLEGAL ALIENS, who once again have been given funding by the State of Maryland. All legislation to crack down on them has been blocked.

"ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES, which will receive government subsidies at the expense of the ratepayers for their economically unproven methods of creating energy

"CHILDREN, who are always touted by the leadership of the majority party as coming first, but when it comes to protecting them from predators, they rank last in the General Assembly

"VETERANS. Financially hard-pressed VFW’s and American Legion Posts depended on gambling machines for operating funds. These machines were peremptorily removed by county governments. Bills which would have permitted them to use them were killed. Funding bills for them were also killed.

"THOSE WHO SUPPORT TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE AND THOSE WHO SUPPORT GAY MARRIAGE. Both sides of the issue are losers, because the General Assembly has refused to act in this matter, denying the electorate their say.

"And finally THE TAXPAYERS OF THE STATE, who once again will have to give their hard-earned money and savings to fund this year’s budget.

"A word about the budget. The powers-that-be promoted how they have reduced this year’s budget by $12 million from the previous year. But after the cameras and the media left, they immediately stuck the $12 million back in. It is part of the continuing shenanigans which go on in Annapolis.

"Over the past eight years I have voted against the budget seven times. Having a family and a business, I clearly understood that the citizens of Maryland could not afford the continuing expansion of the budget. I knew seven years ago that the economy could not grow fast enough to sustain their spending.

"At the end of the day, this year’s budget will be the same as last year’s, which needed cutting them. The major difference is that this budget is now being funded by raiding numerous special funds and by one-time federal dollars. There were a total of 56 funds raided, some of which are: Highway User Revenue, Bay Restoration Fund, University System of Maryland, Injured Workers' Insurance Fund, Waterway Improvement Fund, Injured Workers' Insurance Fund (State Liability Reserve), Ocean Beach Replenishment Fund (Local), Board of Physicians Fund, Injured Workers' Insurance Fund (State Administrative Costs), and the Board of Nursing Fund. This means that next year whoever is Governor will have a tough job because the special funds will be gone and the federal money will be nonexistent.

"In short, all this will result in higher taxes, so to vote for this budget was clearly a vote to raise taxes next year. That is why I voted against it.

"I wish that I could bring you good news. Fortunately there is an election this year, and the citizens will have the opportunity to make some changes. Being a fiscal conservative in Annapolis is like being Custer at Little Big Horn."

Death Camp in Our Backyard

Since 1973, the Hillcrest Clinic in Catonsville, MD, has been the location of at least 700 deaths per year on average by abortion, and possibly twice that number. That equates to between 25,000 and 50,000 innocent lives ended, never even given a chance to be born, robbed from the very womb that should have been the most secure and safe place in the world.

50,000 lives; think about it. Picture Oriole Park at Camden Yards filled to capacity. That's a lot of human souls, never given a chance at life. And as every day goes by, more lives are ended at Hillcrest. The cost to our own community of the so-called right to choose is beyond words. What value do you put on a human life? How do you multiply "priceless" by 50,000 and come up with a value?

There are also tens of thousands of women whose lives have been ruined at the Hillcrest Clinic because they felt they had no choice but to abort their child. Think of the milestones in their aborted child's life that make their hearts ache: the day the child would have been born, the child's first birthday and every subsequent birthday, the anniversary of the day of the abortion, the child's first steps, the child's first day of school, and so on. Abortion leaves a huge hole in the life of a mother.

What did the residents in the vicinity of Dachau do during the 1940s while 27,839 people were put to death there? How about those near Buchenwald where 31,408 people were executed?

This is happening in our own backyard. The Hillcrest Clinic is located at 5602 Baltimore National Pike, Suite 600. It's next to the Burger King and near the old IHOP on Route 40 in Catonsville.

Building a Culture of Life - Part 6

On August 7, 2008, the 126th Supreme Convention of the Knights of Columbus passed a resolution entitled "Building a Culture of Life". This is a continuation of my reflections on that resolution.

"FURTHER RESOLVED, That we reaffirm our commitment to building a culture of life by promoting policies that favor the family, and by recognizing that it is within strong and healthy families that moral values are taught and that the spiritual and cultural heritage of our nation is transmitted;"

As the family goes, so goes the nation. This was a saying of Pope John Paul II, and how true it is! If strong families build strong cultures, the opposite must be true - weak families build weak cultures. The traditional family in America has been all but destroyed over the past 55 years. In the 1950s and earlier, America enjoyed a very public Judeo-Christian culture, from small towns to State governments, from the Federal government to all of the forms of public media. Abortion, "gay marriage," pornography, and divorce were all seen as the social ills that they truly are. There were laws against such ills and they were portrayed as ills in our media.

Fast-forward to the present - now these social ills are not only legal, but protected as rights! What happened? The family was torn apart by many things - television, public school, smaller family sizes, divorce, two working parents, materialism, promiscuity, and so on.

As Christian men, we should be leading the charge to re-focus on the traditional family. We need to be the best dads, husbands, uncles, grandfathers, godfathers, priests, and deacons, and we need to reinforce the moral truths that come to us from God through the Church. If our #1 and #2 priorities are not God and family, then it's time re-examine our lives and shift our focus back to where it should be.

Building a Culture of Life - Part 5

Here is the next part of the pro-life resolution passed by Supreme last August:

"FURTHER RESOLVED, That we believe that “women deserve better than abortion” and will continue to support programs which provide women facing crisis pregnancies with alternatives to abortion, including adoption, and that we support projects which provide spiritual support to those women and men suffering from the traumatic emotional and psychological after-effects of abortion;"

This resolution brings to light the work we should be doing to support women in crisis pregnancies and those men and women who are suffering from an abortion. We are not only pro-life, but we are pro-woman. We need to stand up as men, real men, not the wimpy pseudo-men that our society tries to turn us into. Women want us to be the leaders, protectors, and providers we were all meant to be. When we fail them in those roles, our women seek them elsewhere, and not always in the most wholesome ways. Men failing to be real men are largely to blame for the abortion crisis!

We have an opportunity to atone for some of our failings. A few minutes down Frederick Rd. from our Council Hall is Pregnancy Center West, a place where women can turn when they don't know where else to turn. They provide free services to women who are or think they may be in a crisis pregnancy. Their Pregnancy Counselors are volunteers specially trained in pregnancy counseling. Their goal is to provide women with top quality compassionate care, as well as complete, accurate information about adoption, single parenting, abortion and STDs. They do not perform or refer for abortion. All of their services are free and confidential.

Pregnancy Center West is in need of our help. Some of our brother Knights already volunteer there to provide a male presence. Some contribute money on a regular monthly basis. Our help is also needed with cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs to their clinic. We can always spread the word about what they do and where they are located. Building a Culture of Life - Part 4

Here is the next part of the pro-life resolution passed by the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus in August 2008:

"FURTHER RESOLVED, That we recognize that abortion not only results in the death of an unborn child, but also leads many post-abortive women and men into depression, anxiety and other emotional disturbances;"

My commentary:

We are called to care for not only the unborn children, but also for their parents. These are people who are most likely hurting in one way or another. Most women choose to abort their child because they feel like they have no choice; they do not see any way they could bring that child into the world. They think it's better to end that child's life than try to deal with the difficulties they will face throughout the pregnancy and young life of the child. This sounds like the same thought process that leads people to consider suicide - a lack of hope and lack of options.

After the abortion, she can't help but feel a loss. When she sees that there actually were other options available to her, she often despairs and feels terrible for killing her child. She becomes depressed; her relationships fall apart; she has trouble with her finances - in short, she suffers from Post-Abortion Syndrome.

While the "medical community" may debate whether or not there is such an illness, the tens of thousands of women and men who suffer from it know it is real. Was my baby a boy or a girl? What would he or she look like today? How old would my child be right now?

We need to support those groups that minister to these suffering women (and men, too!). One such group is called Silent No More (www.silentnomoreawareness.org). Their mission is to make the public aware of the devastation abortion brings to women, men, and their families. Their hope is that the emotional and physical pain of abortion will no longer be shrouded in secrecy and silence, but rather exposed and healed. This is a noble effort!

Abortion: One dead, one wounded. Let's end it!

Building a Culture of Life - Part 3

Here is the next part of the pro-life resolution passed by the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus in August 2008:

"FURTHER RESOLVED, That we will challenge our fellow Catholics who are elected officials to be true to the faith they claim to profess, by acting bravely and publicly in defense of life, affirming with Pope Benedict XVI that 'there can be no room for purely private religion.'"

My commentary:

We are called as Knights, Catholics, Christians, and people of good will to be beacons of light in society. One way to do that is to challenge our fellow Catholics and Christians to live the Gospel, including the Gospel of Life. While we all struggle to faithfully adhere to Christ's teachings, Catholics who hold public office have the added responsibility of leading those who are governed by them. They are also very visible examples of the Catholic faith in our world.

Pope John Paul II wrote in his encyclical The Gospel of Life that public leaders are, "[c]alled to serve the people and the common good, they have a duty to make courageous choices in support of life, especially through legislative measures. In a democratic system, where laws and decisions are made on the basis of the consensus of many, the sense of personal responsibility in the consciences of individuals invested with authority may be weakened. But no one can ever renounce this responsibility, especially when he or she has a legislative or decision-making mandate, which calls that person to answer to God, to his or her own conscience and to the whole of society for choices which may be contrary to the common good."

We need to help remind our Catholic public officials that they have the duty to defend and protect innocent human lives. We must send letters and e-mails, make phone calls, and even visit them in person, and always with Christian charity and as a gentleman Knight. We must also support those who defend innocent human life.

Building a Culture of Life - Part 2

Here is the next part of the pro-life resolution passed by the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus in August 2008:

"FURTHER RESOLVED, That we will continue our efforts to charitably inform, educate and motivate our brother Knights and fellow Catholics of the serious obligation they have to form their consciences so that they make sound moral judgments which support and defend life in all its stages."

My commentary:

Education is the cornerstone of any successful effort to promote a culture of life. Our post-modern culture has been mis-educated from early childhood through adulthood on life issues. Human life has been turned into a commodity to be used by the powerful to achieve certain ends (some good, some bad). We have to re-educate ourselves to see the inherent dignity in each and every human life, from conception to natural death, and treat each and every human life with the respect he or she deserves.

As Knights, we are especially called to be moral leaders in our churches and communities, so I encourage each and every one of you to become educated on life issues and help educate others. Building a Culture of Life - Part 1

On August 7, 2008, the 126th Supreme Convention of the Knights of Columbus passed a resolution entitled "Building a Culture of Life". I will present that resolution over the next few posts.

"NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That we renew our deep commitment to oppose any governmental action or policy that promotes abortion, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, euthanasia, assisted suicide and other offenses against life, and that we will continue to speak out to our elected representatives about the need to enact legislation to oppose these practices and protect human life from conception to natural death;"

This is the cornerstone of our pro-life commitment. We believe and affirm that a unique and eternal human person begins at the moment of conception, and it is at that point that a person is deserving of his or her rights. The unborn do not have a voice and we need to speak up for them, particularly in the voting booth and the public arena, just as we do for our children who are under the voting age of 18.

It is essential that we support and elect officials who have a deep and profound respect for all human life; who else would you trust with making decisions on your behalf? Who knows when YOU may be in a situation where the presiding officials deem you less than human and that YOU deserve to die? We already see it today when insurance companies decline to cover life-saving medical care and instead offer to cover life-ending "medication" because it costs them less.

We are called to be the leaven in society; now is the time to act!

Life Prevails - Lauren Richardson Allowed to Live!

I made an appeal last year for Lauren Richardson's life (http://defendlife.blogspot.com/2008/01/pray-for-lauren-richardson-being.html). Well, the Alliance Defense Fund took up her case, and here is the wonderful outcome:

WILMINGTON, Del. — Alliance Defense Fund attorneys have reached a favorable settlement in a lawsuit that had pitted father against mother over the life of their 24-year-old daughter who suffers from severe brain injury. Because of religious conviction and heartfelt interaction with her ex-husband’s family, the mother of Lauren Richardson decided to join cooperatively with Richardson’s father to care for their daughter and to drop her court request to remove Richardson’s feeding tube and water.

“Everyone deserves a chance to recover. Life should be protected—not destroyed,” said ADF Legal Counsel Matt Bowman. “This change of heart and settlement has profoundly affected everyone involved. The miracle of life is not something that should be taken lightly.”

In August 2006, while Richardson was pregnant, she suffered severe brain injury. Doctors later declared her to be in a persistent vegetative state. Despite medical difficulties, she survived and delivered a healthy baby girl in February 2007. She then stabilized into a healthy condition except for some mild medications and her brain injury, which limited her mobility and responsiveness and led to her being fed through a tube.

Richardson’s divorced parents went to court over her care. In January 2008, Richardson’s father, Randy Richardson, contacted ADF after the Delaware Chancery Court made a preliminary recommendation in the case, In re: Lauren Richardson, to give the mother sole guardianship to remove their daughter’s feeding tube. ADF attorneys asked for a new trial and further medical evaluations to show that Lauren Richardson was responsive, that new science undermines the PVS category, and that insufficient evidence existed to demonstrate that Lauren Richardson wanted to stop her own nutrition.

Though it had been alleged that Lauren Richardson once said years earlier that she wouldn’t want to be kept alive if there was “no hope,” her mother’s Christian faith and updates from Randy Richardson’s Web site caused her to feel convicted that her daughter’s life had value and should be preserved. The Web site described Lauren’s responsiveness to pain, music, family members’ voices, touch, and assisted exercise. The site also expressed regret that Lauren Richardson’s daughter might never see her own mother. A reconciliation between the parents ensued in September 2008.

The parents agreed to settle the case, to share joint guardianship of their daughter, and to cooperate in caring for her at Randy Richardson’s Maryland home. Lauren Richardson wept emotionally when her mother informed her of the settlement and the reconciliation of her parents, confirming to the mother that her daughter was aware and responsive. Both parents and their families continue to interact with her daily.

2 Minutes to Midnight

As I reflected on yesterday's election, the following lyrics from an Iron Maiden song I used to listen to came to mind (yes, I used to be a headbanger!):

2 minutes to midnight;
the hands that threaten doom;
2 minutes to midnight;
to kill the unborn in the womb.

This is perhaps the darkest hour in post-modern history. We must band together like never before to fight for the lives of the unborn children, to save women from physical and emotional harm, to save men from lost fatherhood, to save families from utter ruin, to end the American Holocaust and bring God's blessing back on our country.

At the beginning of the song mentioned above (at least on the version from the "Live after Death" album), the following inspirational words from Winston Churchill are spoken, in reference to the attempted Nazi takeover of Great Britain and all of Europe. I will change the wording a bit to reflect our current challenge in America, as noted by the words in bold (to see the original quote, click here):

We shall go on till the end. We shall fight in our churches. We shall fight in the legislatures and courts. We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the Lord. We shall defend life what ever the cost may be. We shall fight in our cities and we shall fight in our towns. We shall fight on the sidewalks and in the streets. We shall fight in our homes. We will never surrender.

The Battle for America is about to begin. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that if the American Republic should last a thousand years, men will still say: This was their finest hour.

God bless America, one nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for ALL, born and pre-born!

Freedom of Choice Act

I commented on some of the wording in the 2007 Freedom of Choice Act to make its meaning a bit more clear. The way I see it, if this Act is enacted, which President-Elect Obama has said would be his first act as President, the Government (Federal, State, Local) would be unable to protect its most helpless and endangered citizens of all - the unborn.

SEC. 4. INTERFERENCE WITH REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH PROHIBITED.

(a) Statement of Policy- It is the policy of the United States that every woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a child, to terminate a pregnancy [why is it a child if you want to bear it, but a pregnancy if you want to kill it? A child is a child no matter how you feel about him or her!] prior to fetal viability, or to terminate a pregnancy [kill a child] after fetal viability when necessary to protect the life or health of the woman [health of the woman includes lifestyle, financial, etc.].

(b) Prohibition of Interference- A government may not--

(1) deny or interfere with a woman's right to choose--

(A) to bear a child;

(B) to terminate a pregnancy [kill a child] prior to viability; or

(C) to terminate a pregnancy

[kill a child] after viability where termination is necessary to protect the life or health of the woman; or

(2) discriminate against the exercise of the rights set forth in paragraph (1) in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information [i.e., cannot establish laws or provide funding for anything that might limit a woman's access to abortion - parental notification, required waiting period, crisis pregnancy centers, partial-birth abortion restrictions, etc.].

(c) Civil Action- An individual aggrieved by a violation of this section may obtain appropriate relief (including relief against a government) in a civil action.

Even if you are not absolutely CERTAIN that what you see pictured there is a human person deserving of the same protections that we born people enjoy, you must admit that you CANNOT PROVE it is NOT a human person.

Wouldn't you rather err on the side of protecting all human life rather than allowing innocent, helpless people to be killed by abortion?

I mean, if an unborn human is not a person, and you can absolutely prove it beyond a doubt, then I guess abortion is no different than getting a haircut or trimming your nails. But if an unborn human IS a person, then woe to us! We are killing more than 4,000 innocent Americans every day, and more than 50,000,000 since 1973!

I say, choose life!

And withing 24 hours the Media has given us more information about Joe's life than they've given us about Barack's life in the past 18 months.

Thanks to a diligent press corps, we now know about Joe's professional licensing status, his income tax situation, his employment history, his domestic squabbles, his voting record, everything associated with his personal identity; his education…. It's probably been reported somewhere whether he wears boxers or briefs.

Thanks to a ruthless and lazy press corps…We still don't know what grades Obama made in college; how he got into Harvard; when he met Bill "the bomber" Ayers; when he stopped doing illegal drugs; his medical history; whether he still smokes cigarettes; the extent of his affiliation with socialist/communist organizations; why he's no longer a licensed attorney; whether he lied on his Bar application;----

Whether he'd qualify for a security clearance if he were just an "average Joe;" what passport he used to travel to Pakistan in 1981; who his ex-girlfriends are; whether he was or still is an Indonesian citizen; why his Kenyan grandmother insists he was born there; whether he was ever legally named Barry Soetoro or anything else besides Barack Hussein Obama-----;

Why he needed the help of a crook to purchase his family home; where he was on Nov. 6 and 7, 1999; what the long-version of his birth certificate says; why he helped an anti-American, pro-Islamic candidate for Kenyan President against US interests; why he listened to Rev. Wright's sermons for 20 years; how many times he took his kids to a Rev. Wright sermon; what he actually did as chair of the Annenberg Challenge; the depth of his relationship with ACORN…

Well, you get the idea.

But, really, I am SO relieved that the Mainstream Media has done its job vetting Joe The Plumber, who is NOT running for public office, but who had the AUDACITY to challenge Barack Hussein Obama, who wants my vote for President of the United States of America."

Is Obama Even Qualified to be President?

The US Constitution is very explicit when it gives the criteria for becoming President of the USA:

1. Must be at least 35 years old;
2. Must have been a US resident for at least 14 years;
3. Must be a natural born citizen.

When Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi told Tom Brokaw on "Meet the Press" that the Catholic Church has not been able to determine when human life begins, she set off a firestorm of debate about the Church and her stance on abortion.

In this response by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Church's constant teaching on the evil of direct procured abortion is very clearly laid out. Pelosi Continues to Roil Bishops

On August 24, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Tom Brokaw on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the Catholic Church has not been able to decide when life begins; she was quickly criticized by many bishops and lay Catholics (including the Catholic League) for misrepresenting the Church’s teaching. No source of criticism was more important than that of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

Three days later, Pelosi’s office issued a statement acknowledging that the Church teaches that life begins at conception. However, it also said that St. Augustine offered a different perspective and opined that “many Catholics do not ascribe to that [the Church’s] view.”

Yesterday, the USCCB issued another statement (see below): it is a two-page reply that offered a historical account of the Catholic Church’s teaching on abortion. The release makes it clear that the Church has always been unequivocally opposed to abortion. The new statement was written to “help end confusion caused by recent misrepresentations of Catholic Church teaching on abortion,” a process that was “prompted by misleading remarks by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue weighed in as follows:

“Nancy Pelosi continues to give currency to the idea that the Church’s teaching on abortion has evolved over time, and that in any case there is more than one legitimate Catholic position on this subject. She is twice wrong. It is precisely because of people like Morton Kondracke of the Fox News Channel, Anthony Stevens-Arroyo of the Newsweek-Washington Post ‘On Faith’ blog site, and anti-Catholic groups such as Catholics for Choice, that the confusion continues to rage. All of them defend Pelosi’s ignorant remarks.

“Nineteen Catholic members of the House have publicly asked Pelosi to ‘correct the public record’ on this issue. Her steadfast refusal to do so is keeping this matter alive. One wonders what it will take to get her to retract her comments before more damage is done to the Catholic Church, to her and to the Democratic Party.”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law” (No. 2271).

In response to those who say this teaching has changed or is of recent origin, here are the facts:

From earliest times, Christians sharply distinguished themselves from surrounding pagan cultures by rejecting abortion and infanticide. The earliest widely used documents of Christian teaching and practice after the New Testament in the 1st and 2nd centuries, the Didache (Teaching of the Twelve Apostles) and Letter of Barnabas, condemned both practices, as did early regional and particular Church councils.
To be sure, knowledge of human embryology was very limited until recent times. Many Christian thinkers accepted the biological theories of their time, based on the writings of Aristotle (4th century BC) and other philosophers. Aristotle assumed a process was needed over time to turn the matter from a woman’s womb into a being that could receive a specifically human form or soul. The active formative power for this process was thought to come entirely from the man – the existence of the human ovum (egg), like so much of basic biology, was unknown.
However, such mistaken biological theories never changed the Church’s common conviction that abortion is gravely wrong at every stage. At the very least, early abortion was seen as attacking a being with a human destiny, being prepared by God to receive an immortal soul (cf. Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you”).
In the 5th century AD this rejection of abortion at every stage was affirmed by the great bishop-theologian St. Augustine. He knew of theories about the human soul not being present until some weeks into pregnancy. Because he used the Greek Septuagint translation of the Old Testament, he also thought the ancient Israelites had imposed a more severe penalty for accidentally causing a miscarriage if the fetus was “fully formed” (Exodus 21: 22-23), language not found in any known Hebrew version of this passage. But he also held that human knowledge of biology was very limited, and he wisely warned against misusing such theories to risk committing homicide. He added that God has the power to make up all human deficiencies or lack of development in the Resurrection, so we cannot assume that the earliest aborted children will be excluded from enjoying eternal life with God.
In the 13th century, St. Thomas Aquinas made extensive use of Aristotle’s thought, including his theory that the rational human soul is not present in the first few weeks of pregnancy. But he also rejected abortion as gravely wrong at every stage, observing that it is a sin “against nature” to reject God’s gift of a new life.
During these centuries, theories derived from Aristotle and others influenced the grading of penalties for abortion in Church law. Some canonical penalties were more severe for a direct abortion after the stage when the human soul was thought to be present. However, abortion at all stages continued to be seen as a grave moral evil.
From the 13th to 19th centuries, some theologians speculated about rare and difficult cases where they thought an abortion before “formation” or “ensoulment” might be morally justified. But these theories were discussed and then always rejected, as the Church refined and reaffirmed its understanding of abortion as an intrinsically evil act that can never be morally right.
In 1827, with the discovery of the human ovum, the mistaken biology of Aristotle was discredited. Scientists increasingly understood that the union of sperm and egg at conception produces a new living being that is distinct from both mother and father. Modern genetics demonstrated that this individual is, at the outset, distinctively human, with the inherent and active potential to mature into a human fetus, infant, child and adult. From 1869 onward the obsolete distinction between the “ensouled” and “unensouled” fetus was permanently removed from canon law on abortion.
Secular laws against abortion were being reformed at the same time and in the same way, based on secular medical experts’ realization that “no other doctrine appears to be consonant with reason or physiology but that which admits the embryo to possess vitality from the very moment of conception” (American Medical Association, Report on Criminal Abortion, 1871).
Thus modern science has not changed the Church’s constant teaching against abortion, but has underscored how important and reasonable it is, by confirming that the life of each individual of the human species begins with the earliest embryo.
Given the scientific fact that a human life begins at conception, the only moral norm needed to understand the Church’s opposition to abortion is the principle that each and every human life has inherent dignity, and thus must be treated with the respect due to a human person. This is the foundation for the Church’s social doctrine, including its teachings on war, the use of capital punishment, euthanasia, health care, poverty and immigration. Conversely, to claim that some live human beings do not deserve respect or should not be treated as “persons” (based on changeable factors such as age, condition, location, or lack of mental or physical abilities) is to deny the very idea of inherent human rights. Such a claim undermines respect for the lives of many vulnerable people before and after birth.

Peaceful Pro-Lifers Arrested Without Warning in Harford County, Maryland

August 14th update:

VICTORY!!! On Tuesday, August 12, Joe Cassilly, the Maryland State's Attorney in Harford County, dropped all charges that were filed against the 18 PRO-LIFERS who were illegally arrested for peacefully holding FACE THE TRUTH TOUR signs along Route 24 in Bel Air, Maryland last Friday, August 1. This is GREAT NEWS, especially for the ten teenagers who were among those arrested.
Thanks to all of you who stormed heaven with prayers for those who were arrested, for those who were involved in the decision to arrest them, and for our State officials.

What happened on August 1st is almost unbelievable, that 18 persons who were peaceably assembled on public property out of harm's way were arrested without any warning and without being told what the charges against them were. None of those arrested were read their rights. Only a few were allowed to make a single phone call.

This decision by the State of Maryland to drop the charges shows that our side of the story was the true story. There were no traffic jams. There were no people running in and out of traffic. There was no refusal to disperse. They plainly and simply violated our First Amendment rights!

I'm keeping a summary of links to articles and blog posts about the arrests of the Face the Truth Tour participants in Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland on Friday August 1st. I was participating in the sign-holding and witnessed everything, including capturing some of the arrests on my camera (see photos). I miraculously walked away without being arrested and immediately began making phone calls to get help for these great pro-life warriors!
Everyone was released by 10:45 Saturday morning and charged with various alleged offenses.

Roman Catholics for Obama?

I applaud the sincerity of Roman Catholics for Obama and their desire to use the US Catholic Bishops' guidance on the responsibility of Catholic voters (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship). I also like the idea that they are 'practicing Catholics' and are truly trying to discern, seemingly at least, which candidate to support for President in 2008.

However, they miss the entire point of the USCCB document, which they quote in order to justify their support of a radically pro-abortion candidate in Obama.

The bishops show us there are eight issues where a candidate can hold an 'intrinsically evil' position. They are abortion, euthanasia, embryo-destructive research, human cloning, the use of torture, targeting of non-combatants, racism, and marriage. The bishops teach us that we MUST evaluate a political candidate's positions on these issues FIRST before we can even look to any other issues. If a candidate supports any 'intrinsically evil' position, there are serious implications on how we can vote.

In the situation presented to Catholic Americans in the 2008 presidential race, we must look at the two front-runners, Obama and McCain, and evaluate them against the eight serious issues.

Abortion: Obama takes the intrinsically evil position of supporting legalized abortion. McCain does not support legalized abortion and is pro-life.

Euthanasia: Obama takes the intrinsically evil position of supporting legalized euthanasia. McCain opposes euthanasia.

Embryo-destructive Research: Obama takes the intrinsically evil position of fully supporting embryo-destructive research. McCain opposes creating/harvesting new embryos and has recently stated, in light of the many advances in using adult stem cells in medical research, that he now opposes using currently-existing IVF embryos in destructive research.

Human Cloning: Obama's position is questionable, as he has opposed human cloning bans, which indicates an intrinsically evil position of supporting human cloning. McCain opposes human cloning.

Torture: Both Obama and McCain oppose the use of torture.

Targeting of Non-Combatants: Obama has stated that he would never use tactical nuclear weapons and that he opposes targeting of non-combatants. McCain has stated that he also opposes targeting of non-combatants but has not ruled out the possible use of tactical nuclear weapons.

Racism: Both Obama and McCain vow to fight against racism.

Marriage: Obama holds the intrinsically evil position that same-sex 'marriage' is legitimate and will strive to legalize it in America. McCain opposes same-sex marriage and has vowed to protect traditional marriage as between one man and one woman.

As you can see, Obama holds an intrinsically evil position on at least four, and possibly five, out of the eight incontrovertible issues. McCain does not hold any intrinsically evil positions, although he may be weak on embryo-destructive research (but better than Obama) and targeting of non-combatants.

It is CLEAR that practicing Catholics, following Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, CANNOT support Obama for president in good conscience.

Another interesting note: IF you go beyond these eight major Catholic issues to the other twenty-two issues brought up as important (but not involving 'intrinsically evil' positions), McCain still outshines Obama, taking a more favorable position than Obama on nine of the issues, while Obama takes a more favorable position on only two of the issues, with them taking equally favorable positions on eleven of the issues.

Applying a scoring system, I allocated a maximum of 15 points to each of the eight major issues and 5 to each of the twenty-two minor issues, and here is how the two candidates fared(maximum of 230 points):

Obama: 50 points for major issues; 64 points for minor issues; 114 points total.

McCain: 104 points for major issues; 90 points for minor issues; 194 points total.

But what are points to the more than one million American babies who are being murdered legally before birth each year? When Catholic voters (and the candidates) face them in the next life, will they be able to say, "I did everything I could to save you"?

Obama: The Most Radically Anti-Life Candidate in US History

Hillary Clinton, who was once the poster-child for the "pro-choice" movement, lost a key endorsement to Barack Obama last week. The largest group to lobby for the right to commit pre-natal murder legally (and make a profit off of it), NARAL Pro-Choice America, has endorsed Obama for president.

NARAL Pro-Choice America is the radical lobbying-arm of Planned Parenthood, a "non-profit" organization that made $112,000,000 in profit and received $336,000,000 in taxpayer funding in 2006. Planned Parenthood is responsible for at least 300,000 abortions annually plus many more due to abortifacient drugs and contraceptives. (See related video: Planned Parenthood Kills for Profit.)

Planned Parenthood has also been tied to eugenics (killing off "less-than-desirable" people to make the world a "better place"), and was recently exposed accepting racist donations that would have been tied explicitly to killing black babies.

Planned Parenthood has been accused of covering up a multitude of sexual crimes: rape, incest, pedophilia, statutory rape.

Obama would view the conception of HIS OWN GRANDCHILDREN as a mistake and would advocate their pre-natal murder to prevent his daughters from being "punished with a baby"!

Obama considers his single biggest mistake as a US Senator was voting to save the life of Terri Schiavo! If presented with that scenario again, he would let her die.

Obama also advocates the killing of newborn or genetically imperfect children.

The fact that NARAL Pro-Choice America sees hope in Obama should be a warning to us all. He has supported the pro-prenatal-murder group 100% in his time in the US Senate. This, combined with Obama's own statements about life, make it plainly obvious that Catholics, and indeed all people of good will, cannot in good conscience cast a vote for him in November.
