concerning the $1 or more paid to UMG for every Zune sold ... and my comments:

I am now chuckling to myself. Microsoft said that this would blow the Ipod out of the water. remember the end of the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley"? I know this never happened in reality but the scene went something like this:

Steve Jobs: But we've got better stuff!
Bill Gates(pointing to all the shiny new computers running Windows and not Mac OS): Don't you see, that doesn't matter!

They don't have to compete with the Ipod's commercial success, UI, or general coolness in the market place. They compete on the bargaining power that they just gave all of the record labels who get a dollar or more from every Zune sold (which seems a lot more attractive to them than an Ipod, now).

I hate to say it but well played ... now the plot thickens.

Rails of fun ...

So, I've been looking to broaden my web based horizons as it were to incorporate more of an "open sourced" community based paradigm of development. I'm classically an asp.net c# die hard to the core (still a big fan, by the way), but simply cannot ignore the fact that the back end expense of running IIS / Windows Server 2003 (soon to be Longhorn) is a major hurdle for most startups trying to get an idea to production. So I've been doing quite a bit of work / learning of Ruby on Rails. This along with good ol' PHP, XML, mySQL, <insert web acronym here>, etc ad infinitum seems to be a very viable solution to the often times cost prohibitive .Net Framework. I've heard quite a bit of static over the last 8 months or so concerning Ruby, but haven't had the same experiences with it personally. Not having done any commercial work with it (yet), I haven't had much of a chance to put it through the ringer but I'm confident that if sights like Odeo can sustain a happy existence then it will be good enough for anything I can cook up. Here's to the agile web!

Hello out there in blog reading land. Not been up to much around here except for oh working, 11 credit hours of school, studying, working, living, ugh ... breathe ... must breathe. So that explains the notable absence of a podcast. Although as I'm typing this I am listening to something I found on Ioda today from a group called Sunset Rubdown. I haven't downloaded a ton from there but thought I'd give their charts feature a try and download the top charted artist. To my surprise it is actually very good. Not surprised that it's rather quirky and very indie, but I really like it. I don't know much about this artist other than this is a 2006 full length release. As I wrote that I decided to take a quick trip to google which led me to a wikipedia page. Here's the quote from there:

Sunset Rubdown is an indie rock band based in Montreal, Canada. It began as a solo project of Spencer Krug, of Wolf Parade fame, who released the Sunset Rubdown debut Snake's Got a Leg in July 2005. Eventually, the group expanded to include Camilla Wynn Ingr of Pony Up!, Jordan Robson-Cramer of XY Lover, and Michael Doerksen. This new line-up released its first collabarative effort, the band's second LP, Shut Up I Am Dreaming, in May 2006.

Seems there's not much to be said for a direct website but there is a myspace (isn't there always?) at www.myspace.com/sunsetrubdown That's all for now, but hey if you check out and buy the album I just contributed to your song loving adventures so this turned out to be a good productive post!

We start out at a run down warehouse, make our way through the orchestra to a dimly lit club with something hot to make you think about cliche, then to a surreal nashville basement experience. From there we go to a blast from the past to an 80's pool party in the spirit of 60's style Boogie Nights and finish it all off with a fall day on moving construction paper. Defenestrate Your Mind Video Episode 1

Those of you who checked out the latest podcast may remember me having mentioned video podcasts coming in the near future. Well, that time is now and here's your first video. As a primer, we basically have about five music videos played back to back from some pretty amazing independent bands. When I was working with ResonateTV, I found it extremely surprising that there were so many independent artists that actually had music videos. I mean, these are not amateur videos here, they are very professionally done.

The format of the show is very simple, in that there is very little else in terms of content besides the music videos themselves (oh, and an appearance from a faithful friend at the end). Stringing together the videos does not take up too much of my time (especially now that I figured out how to rip dvd's right in Sony Vegas, dammit!). If I happen to be out and about with my camera, I should be able to get some interesting content out. My original vision was to have artist interviews, live shows, etc. As it stands it all seems a bit too corporate for my taste (ya, know ... stars in the eyes). Pretty much whatever I deem interesting is going to get filmed. Of that, whatever seems fitting to distribute will get put into the show. This stuff is fun, but time consuming (something I had no idea about when I started producing ResonateTV). In the interests of keeping it simple, video clips will largely be unedited and raw (which has it's own appeal sometimes). Really, though if you have any feedback on suggested content or just general suggestions gimme a shout at dymind [at] gmail [dot] com.

So, I'm a sucker for all things bleeding edge. It's no surprise, then, that I pick up Windows Live Writer and see if a test post will post across my proxy at work. I really like Flock's integrated blogging into the browser, but it never works while I'm at the office, so it becomes useless when I'm at a place that has high speed internet (yes, I live in the dark ages of dial-up out in the middle of nowhere ala:

I tried to test the integrated mapping functionality that's built into the application. Blogger doesn't support photo publishing (b/c I'm not hooked up to my own ftp no doubt) ... ah well. It seems there is an SDK as well to extend the functionality of the tool. Wonder how long it will be before someone writes the Google Maps function into it :-)

Started a project, saw it to a mild state of fruition ... and then it kind of fell apart. You know what though? My time away has not been without learning a bit about the harsh realities of doing something you're passionate about ... does this post sound depressing? Perhaps it's because it is ... am I jaded? A bit ... It's going to be interesting getting back in the swing of things again with the podcast but it'll be back with some thoughts, poetry, and music. Just the way I always wanted it before I got stars in my eyes ...

Mark's Sysinternals Blog: Sony, Rootkits and Digital Rights Management Gone Too Far

The next time a music industry rep cries about the illegal use of their intellectual property by "stealing" or otherwise, I would like to point them in the general direction of this bullshit right here. It seems that now rootkits are being installed onto systems as part of Sony's DRM (Digital Rights Misuse On Part of the Industry). Is that not as bad as someone writing a virus and placing it on a system? Even if that virus lay dormant for a specific "protecting" purpose? Anyone ready to fight yet?

You hear on the news about people shooting their own videos and distributing them on the internet and that it can have far reaching implications for spreading the truth apart from a sanctioned media monopoly? Ok, so I finally broke down the other day and purchased an Ipod.  For those of you who listen to the podcast, you may know that I use, quite extensively, a Dell DJ for the shows and my own musical enjoyment.  I’ve actually been very happy with the DJ.  I think this is more because it is the first device of its kind that I have ever had.  Kind of like once you’ve driven a Passat, why drive a Jetta (except for possibly the ’06 Jetta, boy those things are sweet!).
Wow!  Everything from the box, to the packaging, to the actually unit itself was quite an experience.  I sat down in my library at school and took like thirty minutes just opening it and inspecting the packaging.  Everything was so intricately wrapped and packaged so neatly together.  You could tell that someone wanted to leave their personal touch on the experience.  Never having owned any sort of Apple product, I am not used to such treatment (is this the norm for all Apple products?).
The whole music listening experience is different when listening on an Ipod 20 gb Photo.  I mean, c’mon, it’s the same tunes but with a different colored intuitive click wheel hippie feel good yuppie crap spin to it (  So I’m not going to make this a review or anything because I’m sure most of you out there know what an Ipod is from reading about it.  Suffice it to say that nothing comes close to the experience.

Oh and yeah, if you decide to purchase a case, be sure you just leave it on and don’t shift it around.  The white part of the Ipod scratches so damn easily (of course my wife says I’m anal…she could be right).

Well I was going to blog about the fact that I STILL can't get high speed internet to my house and bitch and moan....blah blah blah blah....instead I just came to Barnes and Noble and paid my $4 for two hours and decided to shut up about it.

So in true blogging style I'm gonna bring some interesting stories your way...I usually don't do this as this is mostly my portal to my podcast but I'm finding more and more that I want to sort of push this stuff down the collective pipe, if you will. So here we go...

Michael Lynn Cisco Scandal:
Michael Lynn has cracked the uncrackable and now Cisco doesn't want him to say a damn thing about it. So what does he do? He goes to Defcon 13 in Las Vegas and, in true hacker style, tells everyone :) And what does Cisco do? They get a legal injuction against him and all of his materials...and he settles. Now, I don't blame the guy. I mean, shit, if you had fscking Cisco and FBI breathing down your neck you would probably tuck tail and get the hell out too. But does that mean that the materials are not online? No, my friend, it doesn't. For the curious please check this out: Cryptome ... you'll be happy you did.
