I wonder what lies beyond the pictures, which are often cropped down to just the food…what do the kitchens look like that create these wonderful foods…what kind of equipment does the cook use…where does the cook store things in the kitchen?

Here is a banana bread recipe I like because it uses very little sugar, it is low fat, and of course, it is vegan. I adapted this from the Veganomicon cookbook.

Olive tapenade classes up almost any foodie event by bringing appetizers and hors d’ouevres up a notch. But anyone can go into a delicatessan and overpay for a tiny jar of the olive gold. Making it yourself raises eyebrows, and it is way easier than you would think.

When we host a brunch party, Frank’s amazing whole wheat waffles are usually the focal point.
Have you ever met anyone who doesn’t like hummus? I haven’t yet. It is a vegetarian/vegan staple, goes with everything, is healthy, and is super easy to make – the perfect food. And other than the tahini (which I also make at home, pictured below in the glass bowl, recipe here) the ingredients are likely things you have in your kitchen already.

Tahini is the secret to a great hummus but knowing that it is just blended sesame seeds makes me resist the idea of paying US$10 for a small jar of it (in Hong Kong) when I can buy a bag of sesame seeds for practically free).

Ingredients

1 cup white sesame seeds

1/8 cup olive oil

1 Tbsp sesame oil

Directions

Place the sesame seeds in a pan and heat until they are lightly toasted.

This one is a classic in my family and we have affectionately called it Aunt Olive’s Bean Salad after its creator, my great-aunt Olive. Real name. No olives in the salad.

I understand if you want to rename it after your aunt, but it will remain a really quick, easy, healthy salad that makes a colourful side dish or lunch.
