I mean, look at the kid's face! You see his eyes looking down lovingly at the frying pizza, which is drowning in canned tomato sauce and grated/dried processed cheese food. To make it "extra" Italian-y (is that even a word?), they could have added a little olive oil to the skillet before pressing the flour and water crust into it, to give it that extra Pizzeria pizzazz.

The ad says its ready in 15 minutes. After 25 years together, we can see that Barbie is clearly out with another doll, as per this photo taken in 1984!

I always thought that Barbie looked a little slutty. I even used to slut her up more by adding more make up and teasing her hair up really big, before she would go out on a date with Ken.

They would go on dates to the drive-in, always perched in barbie's convertible. (And we all know what teenagers do at drive-ins!) I wonder where Bob took Barbie on their date? Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties are becoming so popular now, that truly ugly sweater prices have skyrocketed.

As my place of employment is sponsoring an "Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest" this year, I have been searching the web for some inspiration. Here are some of the best I've found:

When I think of Christmas, I ALWAYS think "Brown and Pink", don't you?

Just so you know, I bought a sweater today on Ebay which I will "bling" up when it arrives. Stay tuned for pictures. Here's a sneak preview before anything is added:
Well, I will tell you MY thoughts on this.

First off, I always thought (on the <strike>rare</strike> weekly occasion I watched this TV series), Half-Pint looked to me like she probably had bad breath. Why? I don't know. Maybe it was her <strike>buck teeth</strike> overbite?... Maybe it was too much wholesome food? Maybe it was helping out "Pa" too much on the farm? Hell, I don't know. Maybe I just found her repulsive?

Secondly, I always thought it would be funny if Half-Pint really slipped and let loose with an obscenity. Then "Pa" could wash her mouth out with some of "Ma's" home made lye soap. That way I would see that and for at least a couple of minutes, Laura's (a.k.a. Half-Pint's"), breath would be releived of stench.
I was bored and just mindlessly "internetting" today when I ran across this old movie poster. I thought to myself - "Hummm, this was either an advertising ploy or it was a very <strike>racey</strike> interesting movie for its time." Noticing that the old hottie, Tab Hunter was in the cast, I decided to research a little further and this is what I found out, which ain't much!
From the Internet Movie Database:

"This little-known Spanish comedy, with an outrageous performance by Tab Hunter, was one of the many low-budget films made in Spain in the mid-late 1960s by producer Sidney Pink. These generally tended to be quirky films, much too quirky to be Hollywood products, and featured interesting American stars--Barry Sullivan, Guy Madison, Cesar Romero, Jeff Hunter, Rory Calhoun, and here Tab Hunter. Pink discussed this film in his autobiography, and he made it quite clear that he did not get along with star Tab Hunter. Hunter has always had a flair for comedy, and he is quite funny in this film, which is basically the standard "American overseas who gets caught up unintentionally in some intrigue" plot. Perhaps because he was outside of Hollywood and his Hollywood image while in Spain, Hunter lets himself go here with a performance that rivals his one in THE AROUSERS as his most over-the-top. Many of his gay fans will probably love this film if they can find a copy. The supporting roles--Luis Prendes as an annoying drunk who sticks to Hunter like flypaper, Gustavo Rojo and Fernando Hilbeck as comic impediments to Hunter's progress, Pedro Mari Sanchez as a boy who does chores for Hunter and eventually becomes a friend-- are handled well. Interestingly, the film was directed by Richard Rush, of Psych-Out and Stunt Man fame. How he got involved with this film and what he thought of it must be an interesting story. Unfortunately, the video copy of this that circulated in the budget bin in the 1980s is in black and white AND has cheesy new video titles-- the film was released theatrically in the US in 1967 in color. I hope someone will release this legitimately in color and with the full credits. I would love to have a commentary track by Tab Hunter himself, or director Richard Rush--or maybe they could be recorded separately and we could get both perspectives. Anyway, I won't be expecting a DVD release of this anytime soon. Still, the budget video of this can probably be found used, and it's a worthwhile purchase for Tab Hunter fans (such as me!) or fans of Sid Pink's 60s Spanish body of films. Hunter's autobiography is supposedly coming out next year, although I doubt that this film is significant enough to rate much coverage there. Hunter fans are also advised to check out his fine Italian western SHOTGUN (fine except for an awful musical sequence near the beginning) and his euro-spy film THE LAST CHANCE (and if anyone could help me with finding his other euro-film LEGION OF NO RETURN, please get in touch!). Overall, a fun low-budget comedy with Tab Hunter in fine form."

Well, if I ever see in in the dollar bin at the local discount store, I might buy it and see just exactly how good or bad it is... but I doubt THAT ever happens!
Heard this song today and it rings true to the things that happen in life. The Bee Gee's "Broken Heart". Sometimes you don't know what you got 'til its gone.....

"I can think of younger days, when living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do.
I could never see tomorrow, but I was never told about the sorrow."

Smart Men, weren't they? Or at least the person who wrote the song...
Mostly cosmetic stuff, like repaint, new border, re-surface the countertops, etc... We did break down and buy all new stainless steel appliances, too. (Yay!)

While I was pondering what type of border to purchase, (torn between a "coffee" theme or a "chef" theme)I happened upon this picture. Hummm, I thought to myself, that is a very <strike>nauseating</strike> interesting chef inspired kitchen...

Needless to say, I learned what NOT to do from this photo and I ended up with a very tasteful, subdued color palatte with a really cute chef-inspired theme.
Of course, Gloria Swanson was mentioned in the early years of film and again in her "come-back" performance during 1950 as Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard". In case any of you have never watched this movie, you can read all about it here.

Its a great drama, but if you grew up in the 60's and 70's, you might remember Carol Burnett doing several comedic sketches playing the same type character as Nora Desmond... It was hilarious to see Carol really exaggerate the makeup and mannerisms in her portrayal of the fading movie star's saga. I think she even had the "look" of the crazy Norma, a.k.a. Its just the beginning of September. Even though Halloween is almost 8 weeks away, I had to share this picture I found on Flicker of some really creep-a$$ Halloween treats. The lady who posted said they were some sort of cookie but gave no recipe. By the looks of them they're made from a sugar cookie dough, shaped like a finger with a sliver of an almond pressed in for a nail.

Well, in the circle of friends whom we party with at Halloween, sweet "treats" don't usually go over very well. (Maybe because it's hard to eat a cookie while consuming some types of <strike>alcoholic</strike> beverages?) So, I am thinking I might try to make these out of some kind of yeast dough - like a frozen dinner roll or those crescent rolls? Still use the almond slivers for nails and use ketchup or salsa for the bloody effect??? Food for thought - PUN intended, of course...
I remember it was on the early show one afternoon after school and since it was a Dr. Seuss title, I decided to watch it (being a kid and all!)

Now if you're 8 years old, taking piano lessons that you <strike>dread</strike> go to every week, this movie is the story of a nightmare that might really happen. Here is the premise (courtesy Wikipedia) of the movie:

"Young Bart Collins lives with his widowed mother Heloise. The major blight on Bart's existence is the hated piano lessons he is forced to endure under the tutelage of the autocratic Dr. Terwilliker. Bart feels that his mother has fallen under Terwilliker's ominous influence, and gripes to visiting plumber August Zabladowski, without much result. While grimly hammering away at his lessons, Bart dozes off and enters a fantastical musical dream, in much the same fashion as Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz.

In the dream, Bart is trapped at the surreal Terwilliker Institute, where the piano teacher is now a madman dictator who has imprisoned non-piano-playing musicians. He also built a piano so large that it requires Bart and 499 other boys (the 5,000 fingers) in order to play it. Bart's mother has been turned into Terwilliker's hypnotized assistant and bride-to-be, and Bart must dodge the Institute's guards as he scrambles to save both his mother and himself. He tries to recruit Mr. Zabladowski, who has been hired to install all of the Institute's sinks ahead of a vital inspection, but only after much skepticism and foot-dragging is the plumber finally convinced to help. The two of them empty their pockets and construct a noise-sucking contraption which ruins the mega-piano's opening concert. The enslaved boys cheerfully run riot, and the "VERY atomic" noise-sucker explodes in spectacular fashion, bringing Bart out of his dream.

The movie ends on a hopeful note for Bart, when the real-life Mr. Zabladowski finally notices Heloise, and offers to drive her into town in his jeep. Bart escapes from the piano, and triumphantly runs off to play."

Yes, it finally ends in a good way, but the majority of the movie dealt with being enslaved to play the piano all day...a nightmare for any 8 year old!
So if any of you have small children and have thought about buying this movie, take heed....DON'T! Your children will be happier and better human beings if you don't subject them to this film.
How about a delicious Summer Jello and Tuna Salad Pie for dinner?
I don't know about you, but this sounds simply <strike>horrifying</strike> wonderful to me. Just looking at it makes me <strike>nauseous</strike> hungry. If you are a brave soul that likes to try new tastes, have at it. Not me. After going to school for 50 years, either as a student or an Educator, my year begins in August. Teachers and students think differently than the average, mainstreamed public, you see. Most people get their 2 to 4 weeks of vacation a year, which they can take at any time they wish. Our vacation time is limited to summers only and that's what we LIVE for each year! The 2.5 months of "freedom" to do as we please without answering to anyone. Sadly, the freedom of summer is over for me as of tomorrow morning... Farewell, Summer.

SaTuRdAy SuRpRiSe - Cloud Sandwiches

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 171px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghmSyhjy_rnoO9DHuFE3w_AV0ZrRdvoUw19LScj_ZSgmhtSCONIcdE5oL3B3Nmx_hgk9JaAI0oxksNVFN76tdgpiL0O4rQuJRHRoJuhu2ZxaRq5HBzNxJiZL95P8sZ3UZGsijhSpZG5zI/s320/cloud_sandwich.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630060439381880210" />
Hello Blogland!
So sorry I have been remiss in my blogging, but things have been busy here in the Midwest! I have been smack-dab in the middle of a kitchen re-do and progress has been very time consuming. I hope to be better at making regular posts in the near future...

As I was taking a break from painting, I picked up my copy of "The Farmer's Cookbook" (1981)and decided to just post the first recipe that I opened to. So here for your taste buds' delight, I am posting "Cloud Sandwiches". This looks to be basically a huge omelet and in my estimation, would serve 2 - 4 people. (Depending on how hungry the people are!)

Cloud Sandwiches:

4 slices bread
butter, as needed
2 slices Swiss or Cheddar cheese
2 slices cooked ham
4 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
dash of pepper
(I'd add a dash of salt for good measure!)

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees

Trim crust from bread. Butter bread on one side. Place the 2 slices of bread, buttered side down, in a small loaf pan. Top each with cheese, ham and top with the remaining slices of bread. Beat together eggs, milk, mustard and pepper. (Salt, too?) Pour over sandwiches. Bake for 40 - 45 minutes.

I think this sounds great for breakfast, brunch or even for a mid-week supper...

Enjoy!

sAtUrDaY sURpRiSe - Grandma's All Purpose Cream Pie Recipe

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQQdwpDvbkykJXtuL6aXt7eruyA4pe4YuTPWWGeryzTv75XWAz116vxzY0LZv2kgG_4q581JjBmPnUAWdchdtLKIhsQurBatbbEe4Vowue02Bzh0c2pc4sUUERShmqKspBgtQDEp-lAZ8/s320/Banana-Cream-Pie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627379103127286354" /> I was lucky to inherit some of my Grandma's recipes when she passed away. Most are hand written by her in the 1930's, when she was the young mother of seven children during the Great Depression. Today I thought I'd share a versatile recipe for Cream Pies. Its basically the pudding base and can be flavored in a variety of ways, depending on the type of pie that is desired.

All of the pies require a pre-baked pie shell. For convenience you can purchase ready made ones at the store, but if you want to go the "old fashioned way", you can make your own. I like this "No Fail Pie Crust Recipe"... Follow the directions (don't forget to pierce with a fork before baking) and bake unfilled pie crust for approximately 15- 20 minutes and let cool.

Now for my Grandma's Filling Recipe:

1/2 cup sugar
4 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups milk
2 egg yolks, slightly beaten
2 tablespoons fat (use shortening, like Crisco)
1 teaspoon vanilla

Mix dry ingredients with a little of the milk, the add rest of milk. Cook over boiling water, stirring until thick. Cover and cook 15 minutes longer, stirring occasionally.
Add a little of the hot mixture to the egg yolk (to temper the eggs). Pour the egg yolk mixture into the hot mix and cook a few more minutes. Stir in fat and vanilla. (This is basic vanilla pudding, which you can use just like this for your pie!) Pour filling into baked pie shell, cool and top with meringue or whipped cream.

For variety:

Banana Cream Pie - Slice two peeled bananas into pie shell before adding filling.
Coconut Cream Pie - Add 1/2 cup shredded coconut to filling; sprinkle topping with coconut.
Chocolate Cream Pie - Make filling, adding 1/2 cup milk, 1/4 cup sugar and two and 1/2 squares baker's chocolate.

Enjoy!

Hello, Dolly!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 306px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNkhzNW4Zt-Fy4YUiHJyxQhWUb8QX1KEVgnnBjzGN5ls5cMQlti8Mwwvxw6yOyTo5f4HAd_NXUJExQnv6V-C-90YJGU8lTdSh0ehLLHvZ54-BAjyWmQp-fRFLtDJNKOGHrbmcX2okVDqk/s320/dollyparton.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627067513792933522" />

This woman is amazing! Hawt is hot!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg5Bvv3l5wwBNCdyet1NlbQLAZ8u712RAntH-Y132R6HYl7nVyXziNdXm1VaMcfp_u-vbs8VKg1esNy56vVjTFvrJVhP0e4_8PD6o-2-t3d3fDWtnTVa2uuEAIX392wkLTeaQ7zGswoB8/s320/Me.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626396047058134306" />

The "Must Goes" ~ Leftovers

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF-t9wFNUv6pPew70V0ahTlwhRtuCTWVwE40uIjSQlUKyOH5Hwluu2Wao4wMrgi6qr1-7Tg5SMtHx8opKkd6Nr4osNocrL13s3n7SSANvUmakqv9abV85dBMy_4rdOE4aXjmkdKmLpff8/s320/leftovers.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620799374141269698" />
I hate to admit it, but my frige looked almost like the one pictured. I couldn't put another single thing in it and three-quarters of the junk in there was not recognizable to me. (Let alone know when it was cooked!) Today was "dump the frige" day...

So, I began. Out came the tupperware, the corningware, the foil wrapped parcels (one of which was a half of a piece of a frozen fish fillet?), the ziploc baggies and all the rest. Thank God I had unloaded the dishwasher before I began this task. Not that it mattered. Some of the casserole dishes had to be soaked to get the baked on grime softened enough to wipe out before I put them IN the dishwasher. Its over, now. Guess what's for dinner? Stouffer's! And we're eating off paper plates tonight...

~

Good-bye Gas Grill? Yes, I know. It was Father's Day, but he ended up cooking for everyone, anyway... So, when just he and I were outside, he proceeded to tell me he was NEVER going to buy another gas grill. This was the conversation:

H: I'm never gonna buy another gas grill.
Me:  Bullshit
H: I'm NOT. Next time I get a new grill, its gonna be charcoal.
Me:  Why?
H: 'Cause I like the flavor of charcoal cooked food.
Me: I think you should think of the time element. It takes awhile for the charcoal to get ready to cook on. It already takes you about 2 hours to do a steak on a gas grill.(WHY?- Who knows!) What if there's an ice storm in the winter and we lose power? The gas grill might be our only way to cook. Do you want to stand out in below freezing temps waiting for the damned charcoal to heat up?
H: I want a charcoal grill just like Yaddy Yah's. That son-of-a-bitch will last forever!
Me: That's what you said when you bought your current gas grill. If THAT is going to last forever, you won't be buying a fancy charcoal one, 'cause it's never going to wear out! (I turned around and walked into the house)

Yesterday was one of those days!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dejadoo.blogspot.com/2011/06/good-bye-gas-grill-not.html' title='Good-bye Gas Grill? I've been busy around the house on painting projects and then... BAM... threw my back out! Thank goodness for Chiroprators! I'm finally on the mend.

Thought I'd share a recipe from one of my Mother-In-Laws's cookbooks. This recipe is for "Grandma's Pickled Apricots", from "The Farmer's Cookbook", (1980). This cookbook has a really different way of categorizing the recipes- by ingredients. The particular chapter where this recipe is located is under "Apricots: The Beauty and Fitness Fruit". Under this chapter, there are savory appetizers and meat dishes, among others. All having, of course, apricots as an ingredient. Who'd have thought?

Enough of my ramblings, here is the recipe!

7 lbs. of apricots
Whole cloves
1/3 oz. stick cinnamon
16 fl. oz. vinegar
4 lbs. of sugar (Yes, you read right, 4 lbs.!)
Brandy, as needed
(You will also need canning jars and know how to can)

Wash apricots and stick 2 or 3 cloves into each one. Comine cinnamon sticks, vinegar and sugar in a large pan and bring to a boil. Add half the apricots and boil gently until soft. Repeat, using the remaining apricots. Pack fruit into hot, sterlized canning jars, adding enough hot liquid to cover fruit. Add a piece of cinnamon stick and 1 tablespoon brandy to each jar. Seal at once.

The description of the recipe says these are a nice accompaniment to meat and poultry and makes wonderful gifts.

A "New" Old Recipe ~ Tomato Soup Cake

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 185px; height: 299px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoK4WkYyXODW73NcJQMjWvQm2uGw5B0s6tZriVtxkXUVxXZWbiK5RfF7caRaD_YIaJqyd0KD_o9bNwwcFpNsMgOjv4cn_WrcM2FUuvACVIvGiszjc70As71LWJglwkJ23GLjLq9zdT4_4/s320/tomato_soupcan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617448638555513586" />
I know, it sounds awful. I doubt if I ever make it, but the ingenuity of the frugal cook is an inspiration. Why or how did anyone think of using this cupboard staple in a dessert? When I think of tomato soup, I think of chilly autumn nights and grilled cheese sandwiches- not a spicy, cinnamon laced cake!

For your eating pleasure, I present the recipe for "Tomato Soup Cake"...

Ingredients:
1/4 pound shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 can of tomato soup
1 teaspoon baking soda–put in the soup
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
2 teaspoons baking powder
Method:
Cream the butter until nice and fluffy. Add the sugar and mix well. Add the egg and mix well. Put in the tomato soup/baking soda combo.

Mix all the dry ingredients together. Add to the moist ingredients until well mixed.
Bake the cake at 350 degrees in a well greased and floured 9" pan and bake for 40 minutes.

The result:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 225px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOD9RjUpXad6g8mbnQKdLqjG2aTQ-yqgHYW15R9cxc-A3OWkPj0M_iO8gEJMXFUvwzAjIHvpRhJKF6DEvhhwO899WNE-W27uMSdw_trjhGl2YkwrjgFXJhpVhpj6UoC5URIhpshxSzciA/s320/tomatosoupcake.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617454368345138418" />

It is suggested to top with a cream cheese type frosting.

Oh Mamma MiO

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 262px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw0T4TxwW8_IgT-1nvHT333udc6T8qMOCrpLJk7cRc3UOhivjJTLJ7aLvQ4aw5JMNZT3DbbMsZ04tUL883REm6s4EoxQu8MIL33LPOl09CpYayBxL0J72dzUEWLJqHw9QagAi8BWIvk6I/s320/MiO.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617009343599448210" />
I don't know why, but this stuff disturbs me. First of all, if you are going to drink water, why is there a need to add a flavor enhancer? Water is water and its good for you. If you want it to look and taste like kool-aid, why not make a pitcher of pre-sweetened kool-aid with the artificial sweetners? If portability is a problem, pour it into an empty plastic bottle and carry it along. Or just buy a packet and pour a little into your bottle of water? I've read up on this stuff and you can read some facts about it HERE. I notice it everywhere! Even the most seasoned bloggers, who blog for $$$, can't distinguish. My sympathies go out to the home-schooled student whose Parent-Turned-Teacher makes the mistake... what kind of English are they teaching their kid? The worst is when I hear a certified, college educated English teacher get it wrong. I mean what's so hard to understand??

"Use than as a word indicating comparison. When you are talking about a noun (thing, person, place or concept) being more, less, better, cooler, dumber, etc. in relation to another noun, the word than is necessary."

"Use then as a word indicating time. When you want to tell about a sequence of events or are giving instructions in a step-by-step order, the word then is necessary."

Ok, enough of this rant. Don't get me started on "their", "they're" and "there"!

It's Indy Day! Here in Illi-ana, it's part of our Memorial Day Weekend Festivities. Hubby and I had the opportunity to go for many years to watch the Race in person with our good friends in Texas. They would fly or drive up every year and we would make the 3 hour trek over to the Brickyard, the morning of the Race and get home exhausted but content that we once again got to experience the whole thing together.

Those days are over now, but we've kept the tradition of watching all of the pre-race activites, the race itself and post-highlights, while wearing our Indy Regalia, putting out our checkered flags and cooking up some barbeque on the grill. (Yeah, we're spoiled...we have a TV out here on our covered deck!) I'll never forget all the times we experienced it over there first hand, but its just pretty comfortable sitting here in the comfort of my own home watching it on the TV. Ok... gotsta go. We're planning a Summer Party with a "Carnival" theme, so with the pastel colored "frosting" I just may just make it for that night. The shrimp salad, chicken with bacon and pecan fillings sounded cool and refreshing...yummo!

Here's the directions:

Party Sandwich Loaf

Prepare fillings (below). Trim crusts from 1 loaf unsliced sandwich bread. Cut loaf horizontally into 4 equal slices. Spread one side of 3 slices with softened butter. Place 1 bread slice, buttered side up, on serving plate.
