Yes and no…this or that…one or zero. In the basis of this elementary two-term discrimination, all human knowledge is built up. The demonstration of this is the computer memory that stores all knowledge in the form of binary information. It contains ones and zeroes, that's all. Because we're unaccustomed to it, we don't usually see that there's a third possible logical term equal to yes and no which is capable of our understanding in an unrecognized direction. We don't even have term for it, so I'll have to use the Japanese mu. Mu means "no thing." Like "quality" it points outside the process of dualistic discrimination. Mu simply says, "no class: not one, not zero, not yes, not no." It states that the context of the question is such that a yes and a no answer is in error and should not be given. "Unask the question" is what it says. Mu becomes appropriate when the context of the question becomes too small for the truth of the answer.

"All the time we are aware of millions of things around us--these changing shapes, these burning hills, the sound of the engine, the feel of the throttle, each rock and weed and fence post and piece of debris beside the road-- aware of these things but not really conscious of them unless there is something unusual or unless they reflect something we are predisposed to see. We could not possibly be conscious of these things and remember all of them because our mind would be so full of useless details we would be unable to think. From all this awareness we must select, and what we select and call consciousness is never the same as the awareness because the process of selection mutates it. We take a handful of sand from the endless landscape of awareness around us and call that handful of sand the world." "We divide the sand into parts. This and that. Here and there. Black and white. Now and then. The discrimination is the division of the conscious universe into parts. [...] You'd think

Certain types of militant groups —those suffering from leadership deficits— are more likely to attack civilians. Their leadership deficits exacerbate the principal-agent problem between leaders and foot soldiers, who have stronger incentives to harm civilians. We establish the validity of this proposition with a tripartite research strategythat balances generalizability and identification. First, we demonstrate in a sample of militant organizations operating in the Middle East and North Africa that thoselacking centralized leadership are prone to targeting civilians. Second, we show that when the leaderships of militant groups are degraded from drone strikes in theAfghanistan-Pakistan tribal regions, the selectivity of organizational violence plummets.Third, we elucidate the mechanism with a detailed case study of the al-Aqsa MartyrsBrigade, a Palestinian group that turned to terrorism during the Second Intifada because pressure on leadership allowed low-level members to act on their

Each team member brings creativity to a project. First, let's dispel some myths about creativity. The following statements are absolutely true:
-Your level of creativity is not determined at birth
-You don't need "genius" intelligence to come up with unique and innovative ideas
-This skill is important in project management, business and almost every endeavor
-You can learn to express greater creativity
If your creative abilities are not serving you well, then take action now. Not only will you provide higher quality contributions in the many areas of project management that require creativity, but this ability will spill over to other areas of your life. It's like a muscle. When you focus on it and use it, it will become stronger. And...the sky's the limit.
1. Open your mind to being creative
2. Become an expert
3. Broaden your horizons
4. Take on challenges and learn from failures
5. Write down your ideas
6. Create an inspiring work environment
7. Establish a creative ritual

The Case for Creative Leadership

According to a study conducted in 2010 by IBM, Capitalizing on Complexity: Insights from the Global Chief Executive Officer Study, creativity is the single most important leadership competency for dealing with the volatile, uncertain and complex world in which we live.

The takeaway for project managers hired by these companies: Understand what creativity is and how to nurture it in themselves and their teams.

1. Stimulate idea generation.
2. Protect idea owners.
3. Encourage preservation of ideas.
4. Promote good ideas.
5. Broaden the team's knowledge base.
6. Employ diverse teams.
7. Invest in inspiring workspace.
8. Recognize and reward creativity.
9. Provide stress-management resources.
10. Model creativity skills.

S4A is a Scratch modification that allows for simple programming of the Arduino open source hardware platform. It provides new blocks for managing sensors and actuators connected to Arduino. There is also a sensors report board similar to the PicoBoard one.

The main aim of the project is attracting people to the programming world. The goal is also to provide a high level interface to Arduino programmers with functionalities such as interacting with a set of boards through user events.

Rule number one: you should never be making network requests directly from an Activity (I will just say Activity from here on out, but everything applies to Fragments as well). Even using an AsyncTask is asking for trouble; when the task finally completes, you have to guard against the fact that your host activity could be gone (rotated, destroyed in the back stack, back pressed). Are you leaking memory by holding Activity references? Are you sure?

So many example apps just shovel everything into Activities. It is not uncommon for an Activity in a tutorial (or even official SDK samples) to have 500-800 lines of code. This is analogous to having a 500-800 line controller in your web application! This is not good!

As discussed in my previous blogpost, it took about 3 hours to reverse engineer the Lenovo/Superfish certificate and crack the password. In this blog post, I described how I used that certificate in order to pwn victims using a rogue WiFi hotspot. This took me also about three hours.

Actually, it's far more likely that you made a human of yourself.

When you drop your guard, opt for transparency and make an honest connection with someone, you're right on the edge of foolishness, which is another word for not-corporate, not-aloof, not-safe. Another word for human.

Most of the time, we persuade ourselves not to make a fool and so instead, we shut down a connection that could have become precious for us and for them.

A little bit of knowledge can be a powerful thing. There is a useful distinction that comes up a lot in game theory about knowledge. The two concepts are:

Mutual knowledge: all people in a group know about an event

Common knowledge: all people in a group know about an event, they all know that they know the event, they all know that they all know that they know the event, and so on ad infinitum.

The two concepts are very similar but not identical. There are fun ways to understand the distinction, and I have written about two puzzles that illustrate: Guess the number - a game theory puzzle, and Salem Witches - a math puzzle.

A rule should be rejected, in contrast, if the answer to any of the following questions is "Yes." Is the rule based on some crackpot theory, such as that English should emulate Latin, or that the original meaning of a word is the only correct one? Is it instantly refuted by the facts of English, such as the decree that nouns may not be converted into verbs? Did it originate with the pet peeve of a self-anointed maven? Has it been routinely flouted by great writers? Is it based on a misdiagnosis of a legitimate problem, such as declaring that a construction that is sometimes ambiguous is always ungrammatical? Do attempts to fix a sentence so that it obeys the rule only make it clumsier and less clear?

Hash algorithms are one way functions. They turn any amount of data into a fixed-length "fingerprint" that cannot be reversed. They also have the property that if the input changes by even a tiny bit, the resulting hash is completely different (see the example above). This is great for protecting passwords, because we want to store passwords in a form that protects them even if the password file itself is compromised, but at the same time, we need to be able to verify that a user's password is correct.

Modern solutions such as scalable vector graphics, mathematical markup with MathML and MathJax, embedded web fonts, and syntax highlighting are used. Rudimentary scaffolding for responsive design is in place, which adapts the page for viewing on pocket devices and tablets. More tests on small screens are needed to adjust the font size and formatting, so I encourage feedback from smartphone and tablet owners.

Taking a break from Onetastic macros, today I have a Word macro to share that will convert headings that are imported from OneNote into Word headings. If you had a page in OneNote that used heading styles, and then either copy pasted them into Word or used the File > Send > Send to Word feature, your headings will have the right formatting in Word but they wont have the heading style (e.g. they won't be recognized as headers).
