In Climate-smart landscapes: opportunities and challenges for integrating adaptation and mitigation in tropical agriculture, Celia Harvey and colleagues demonstrate that intentional integration of adaptation and mitigation activities in agricultural landscapes offers significant benefits that go beyond the scope of climate change to food security, biodiversity conservation, and poverty alleviation.

In Mitigating GHG emissions embodied in food through realistic consumer choices, published in October in in Energy Policy, scientists from the Food Climate Research Network showed how consumer choices surrounding food could lead to reductions in food-related GHG emissions. Authors reported that consumer actions could easily lead to reductions of 25% in food-related GHG emissions in the UK, equivalent to a 71% reduction in exhaust pipe emissions of CO2 from the entire UK passenger car fleet (71 Mt CO2e year−1 in 2009).

The IPCC plenary adopted the Wetlands Supplement to the 2006 GHG Inventory Guidelines in October, mandating governments to improve their GHG emissions reporting for wetlands, including huge agricultural sources such as oil palm, shrimp farming, sago and other agriculture. The Wetlands Supplement will increase pressure to address agricultural emissions in peatlands and mangroves – high C ecosystems that are coming into sharper focus in the UNFCCC.
