Amitav Ghosh’s latest novel, River of Smoke, the second in his Ibis trilogy, follows a motley crew of storm-tossed characters to their destinations. While in the first book, Sea of Poppies, the voyage was the story, with most of the action taking place on board the Ibis, here his characters are on solid ground, placed on a global canvas that stretches from the plantations of Mauritius to the crowded harbours of China.

In doing so, Ghosh expands his cultural detailing, from clothing to cuisine. But most of all, it is the realistic linguistic registers of his dozen or so major characters that make his novel throb with life. There’s Bhojpuri, Bengali, Chinese, Arabic, Portuguese and Laskari, to name only a few.

They say learning knows no age. So when is it too late to start learning something? When was the last time you woke up to new ideas? When was the last time you felt like you were growing with the rising sun and learning something new each day? Well, I don’t know about you but I haven’t certainly felt like it in ages.

The last time I felt I was doing something new and exciting was when I enrolled myself for driving lessons offered by a notoriously short-fused Baloch instructor. I’ve lost count of the number of times I tried, tried and failed before my Emirati examiner finally showed me mercy. I guess it had something to do with the prayers we offered at the neighbourhood mosque in the middle of the test!

ABU DHABI // Pupils who opt out of Arabic will not have their high school certificates attested by the education authority, officials have warned.

Many students who chose not to take Arabic classes in Grades 10, 11, 12 and 13 are finding it hard to get into universities because they have not completed the examinations needed to receive an equivalency certificate from the Ministry of Education.

The certificate is required for entry into accredited universities and for some jobs.

Arabic classes are compulsory until Grade 9 in all schools. Thereafter they are optional for students learning it as a second language.

Professor Filiu is the chairman of Middle East studies at Sciences Po in Paris, and was recently a visiting professor at Georgetown and Columbia Universities in the United States

Jinanne Tabra is promoting Arabic learning among children living outside the Arab region
Doha-May 25, 2011: It is time to upgrade Arabic learning approaches among children as the current ones are "outdated" and "lacking fun elements" which can attract children to learn the language, said Jinanne Tabra, entrepreneur and founder of ARABOH.com.
Tabra, who used to find learning Arabic an "awful burden" during her school days, has started an internationally acclaimed project to help make Arabic easier and more interesting for children, particularly those living outside the Arab region.

"I believe that we do need to look for more effective methods for Arabic teaching in which fun should be a key element," she said to students at her former school, Qatar Academy, a member of Qatar Foundation.

Dubai: English is taking over the world, says English teacher Patricia Ryan Abu Wardeh. And its status as a global language comes at the expense of other languages, she argues.
After 30 years of teaching her native language in the Gulf, Abu Wardeh has come to the conclusion that while English is an important language, its status as a global language is overshadowing other languages, including Arabic.

DUBAI — The idea may sound a bit absurd, but a school in Dubai is teaching Arabic to parents who could in turn help their kids overcome difficulties in learning the language.

Mentoring parents to learn basic words and phrases over a period of four weeks, the school has pioneered a successful programme to bridge the language learning gap between parents, kids and the school.

“Every day we are trying to come up with innovative ideas to make language learning easier and fun for the students. Bringing the parents into the classroom was part of creating a better bonding between the parents and the language so that they could in turn help their kids at home,” says Neville de Noronha, Principal, Our Own High School, Al Warqa’a.

JEDDAH: Arabizi, a term that describes a system of writing Arabic in English, is now more popular than ever, especially online.

Parents and teachers are becoming more concerned over the popularity of this new trend. Some see it as a threat to the Arabic language.

A non-English speaker does not need to speak the language to communicate with others in Arabizi. Numbers are also mixed in Arabizi to represent some letters in Arabic, such as 2, 5, 6, 7 and 9.

Our generation has seen turmoil flare up between the Middle East and the United States ever since the fatal day of Sept. 11, 2001. While an unjust battle rages in the Middle East, a battle of blasphemy and stereotypes also continues here in the United States. Many students at the University want to understand the world many know little about, but the school has significantly decreased resources to this knowledge and causing turmoil inside the Arabic program.

International banks, acting on government orders to freeze assets from Libya, Egypt and Tunisia, are scouring hundreds of millions of client files for individuals on the new watch lists. But in doing so, bank compliance officers are grappling with a peculiar challenge: the myriad ways of transliterating Arabic names.

The arcane problem is opening the door to niche players, including a unicycling polyglot, who promise to help banks ensure they don't miss anyone because of misspelled names.
