Did you know that cookies, as Americans know them, are much alike in England, Scotland, Ireland, the Scandinavian Countries, and the Germanic Countries?

Or that when the American traveler begins to look about in other lands to find "Sweets" to supply the sugar he is in the habit of eating (Americans consume more sugar than the inhabitants of any other country) – he can always find some sort of "Sweets" in whatever land he visits.

And many of these sweets though different from the cookies he is used to eating are quite delicious! For example, he may be offered an unusual looking but tasty nut paste in Turkey, or a rich fried cake in Spain. Tasty Cookie & Small Cake Recipes from Around the World

You see, I loved the attic better than any room in the old house in the South where I was raised. Evidently, my great-grandmother had the same fondness for it. She hoarded valuables in that attic. Her recipes, in a hand-written cookbook, which I found in the attic, began my hobby for collecting formulas for cookies and small cakes.

The interesting information she had written about the cakes was the inspiration for writing a book. The collector's demand for nothing but the authentic grew in me as the years passed. No formula went into my collection unless it was the best of its kind.

Gradually, I began looking to other lands to satisfy my desire for new and unusual recipes. I found them in out of the way places, in cottages, in manor houses, and in castles.

Now I am presenting them to you, with the hope that you may find as much pleasure in using them as I have found in collecting them and writing the book!
