It's exciting times at Delicious, we've finally brought together our website and blog. Not only that but we've opened Art-O-Mart, our online shop for modern & vintage prints, design & small press items.

Abstract City Maps

I do like a map and these abstract city maps by Jazzberry Blue are no exception with their blocks of colour and graphic shapes they're definitely ticking all the right boxes.

It's really interesting to see the street plans in such a simple form. I love how crazy and random the London streets are compared to the others and the New York one is grid heaven.

Jazzberry Blue have a great body of illustration work, including more maps for New Delhi, LA and Jerusalem all available as Giclee art prints here.

Sicilian Fruit Tissue Wrap

Colourful illustrations, charming but lo-fi print and wonderful lettering all come together on these Sicilian fruit wrappers to turn an unremarkable, everday item into something beautiful.
I'm always amazed at the level of detail on packaging like this, that for the most part goes totally unnoticed.

Dover Books

When The Dover Book Shop closed it's doors last year we worried that was the end of a great resource, but it's back (well in virtual form anyway).

Their website is now up and running, taking orders of their fabulous copyright free books and cds 24hrs a day.

How have we managed without them?!

Auto Type XXVXIII - some more fabulous automobile lettering from New Years Day at Brooklands Museum. My particular favourite has to be the Leyland bus (top), not only because it reminds me of my home town, but I love how the letters are deeper at the top to work against the curved bodywork. Looks very 70s.

#138 - British United Airways passenger ticket and baggage check, 1963. I love to see a classic logo on an original bit of print so I couldn't leave this behind at the boot sale.

This lucky person, a Miss MV Dickinson travelled from London Gatwick to Venice on what was then the UK's largest independent airline, largely owned by British & Commonwealth Shipping (B&C) and the largest unsubsidised airline outside the US.

Have a delve into the rest of our reference box for more ephemera and vintage design goodies.

Australian Art Deco & Art Deco Style Signage

These beautiful Art Deco and Art Deco style signs are from Truffle Pig's 'Type Tour - of Potts Point', "Extensively developed from the 1920s through to World War II, the neighbourhood boasts some of Australia's best examples of Art Deco architecture and many of the gracious apartment buildings are adorned with beautiful examples of custom signage".

I'm lucky that Brighton has many wonderful examples of Art Deco architecture & signage, but when you see them so regularly it's easy to take them for granted. I often think about taking the camera out and shooting them properly, but I never seem to find the time. These pics have inspired me to finally do it though, so watch this space.

Invasive Species

Phone masts disguised as trees are a constant source of amusement on my travels. They can be spotted easily at a distance, as easily in fact as a regular mast, but I love the lengths someone has gone to trying to blend them into the environment.

These wonderful images are the work of South African photographer Dillon Marsh. Thanks to Vic at Sell! Sell! for sending us the link. The series, 'Invasive Species' explores, 'the relationship between the environment and the disguised towers of Cape Town and its surrounds'.

The very first one was allegedly erected in South Africa in 1996 so it seems fitting that Dillon's series is based around the country. See his full collection here and while you're there check out his images of large man-made everyday objects, 'Giants Among Men'!

The Lancashire Coast

I was thrilled to see this Daphne Padden poster on Quad Royal this morning. I'm a Lancashire lass and know the Lancashire coast has some wonderful seaside towns; St Annes with it's Victorian grandeur, Fleetwood steeped in fishing history and my favourite, Blackpool with it's mixture of faded glory and tacky arcades.

As much as I love these towns though, I never remember any of them looking as lovely as Daphne illustrates them!

Auto Type XXVXII - from Billing Hot Rod Show a selection of mainly american automobile badges with wonderful lettering as always.

Lots of weathered emblems and patina paint in this bunch but that just adds to their beauty. I particularly like the Country Squire and the Ranch Wagon - two I haven't seen before!

#137 - Matchbooks & matchbook covers. This little lot were in a collection of souvenir match books I was given recently. The majority of the covers are uninspiring design-wise, but there's something about the ones above, be it their tacky charm or giant graphics that jumped out at me - especially the flame graphic!

These stunning images of long forgotten signs in all their faded glory are the work of photographer Marc Shur. A self-confessed lover of old things, he wants his 'Sign Language' photographs to highlight the beauty and history in these old signs and give them back their grandure.

"I strive for a sense of hyperrealism and a graphic feel in my photographs, wanting the signs to be larger than life, appearing much bigger and important than they do in real life. I want people to see the colors and details as if they were standing just a few feet away".

Marc's website and Flickr are an absolute feast of distressed and ageing signage all beautifully photographed - be sure to take a look, but only when you have plenty of time to spare!

Blind Veterans UK Photography Exhibition

This year marks 75 years since Blind Veterans UK (originally St Dunstan's) opened their Brighton rehabilitation, care and training centre to provide lifelong support for ex-servicemen and women blinded in action.

To celebrate, they've opened their 1930's chapel to the public as part of the Artists Open Houses to showcase the Blind Veterans UK Photography Exhibition.

The exhibition mixes old and new photography with wonderful archive images taken during their 75 years at the Ovingdean site (below) sat alongside recent images taken by our friend & Digital Bungalow co-founder, Darren Baldwin to capture everyday life at the centre in it's 75th year (above).

I think you'll agree Darren's images are thought-provoking and charming. They, "expertly draw the viewer in and capture the 'feeling' of this unusual, interesting and magical building".

The exhibition is open 10-4pm every weekend in May, but don't worry if you can't get over there, you can view the full set of Darren's pics here.

It's almost that time again, in less than a week AT Open house will fling open it's doors for the first Artists Open house weekend.

We'll be there with a selection of letterpress prints, cards, notebooks, totes, vintage circus prints and some new linocuts, as will AT regulars Dead Methods, Snorkus, Alice Pattullo, Petting Zoo, Mr Wingate, Hello Dodo, James Sawyer, Nathan James, Natalie Martin and Winsome & Saucy.

In addition this year, we have a new artist joining the AT gang - fabulous illustrator Claire Scully aka. The Quiet Revolution.

Claire describes her work as, "a mix of strange utopian worlds and parallel universes with juxtapositions of the unexpected, playing with scale and narrative".

I had a sneaky peek at the Giclee prints she's selling at AT open house and believe me, they look good on screen but when you see them up close and full scale, the detail in astounding.

AT open house will be open 11-6 every weekend throughout May. So be sure to pop down and say hello, there's always a fresh pot of tea/coffee on the go and lots and lots of cake!

Fret not, if you can't make it over, you can keep up-to-date on the AT blog and once the show starts all the work will be available in their online shop.

Auto type XXVXI - a very US heavy selection of auto type from a show last summer with a very rare French example thrown in for good measure! I do love the quirky French 'Aronde' lettering, but the 'V8' is one of my all time favourites - I never tire of looking at it.

Happy Birthday Norman Parkinson

Today would have been legendary fashion photographer Norman Parkinson's 100th birthday, the man many consider to be the 'father of fashion photography' and it's easy to see why.

Born Ronald William Parkinson Smith in London, 1913 he started his photographic career as an apprentice to court photographers Speaight & Sons before opening his own studio in 1934. By 1938 fashion & portrait photography was becoming his main line of work with him regularly contributing to The Bystander and shooting on location for the British edition of Harper's Bazaar.

During the war Parkinson split his time between farming and working as recconnaissance photographer for the RAF. But after the war he returned to the more glamorous world of fashion and joined Condé Nast where he remained until 1960 shooting iconic images for British & American Vogue.

In 1964 he emigrated to Tobago to focus on his passion for farming, but remained a dominant force in fashion photography until his death in 1990 shooting on location for Vogue, Life and Elle.

Parkinson shot his models in real life scenes, in exotic locations and with unusual props. A breath of fresh air to fashion photography. He wanted his models to, "be out there in the fields jumping over the hayocks".

To celebrate the wonderful life & works of this legendary photographer, BBC4 are showing a 60 minute documentary tonight at 9pm and if you want to see his images in all their glory there's a retrospective of his work, 'Lifework: Norman Parkinson's Century of Style' running at the National Theatre, London until the 12th May.
