My Kitchen Makeover: White Painted Cabinets

Hi all! I am super excited to share this post with you all!

For years I've been dreaming of having white painted cabinets in my kitchen. I finally did it and now I LOVE MY NEW KITCHEN!

It's so light, bright and clean looking and I love that!

Here are the before photos:

and this here is what my kitchen looks like now:

I hired a professional to spray the doors and I painted all the rest in Farmhouse Paint in Creamy Linen color. We color matched the creamy linen color for the doors and cabinet faces. I would have preferred to hire the entire thing out and have everything sprayed, but it was a bit too expensive, so I chose to go this route.

Because I wanted a cleaner look in my kitchen, and we weren't changing our backsplash, I had my husband cut a board that fits perfectly inside the square tile area behind my cooktop. I painted it with chalkboard paint and then I painted the established year on it. This is the year that my husband and I got married.

The island lights are from Lowes. The barstools are from Pier One. (You can find the links at the bottom of this post.) I totally lucked out on the bar stools. I found 2 that had some damage on them and I got them for more than 75% off!! I was so super excited about this deal!

Those adorable large mason jars on the counter are from Walmart. I filled them with flour, sugar and powdered sugar. I love the look of these!!

The topiary is from Ikea.

I also made the "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" sign.

I may still add a burlap roman style curtain.

It's amazing what some paint, new bar stools and light fixtures can do to change the look of a space.

I love. love. love the new look in my kitchen! The brightness just makes me happy and this kitchen is definitely more me!

August Challenge: Organizing and Cleaning the Front & Back Entry Way

Hello!

It's August! Which means, if you are following along with the Delightful Order Monthly Organization Challenge, we are focusing on getting our front and back entry ways organized and cleaned up this month.

Fixer Upper Coffee Bar (Contributor Post)

My parents are building a new house and my mom wanted to incorporate her old coffee station in the breakfast nook. The coffee station is a smaller set up and she had a long wall that needed to be filled. I immediately thought of the coffee bar on Fixer Upper (I believe it's on season two) that had blue cabinets, chalkboard and long floating shelves. My parents loved the idea so we decided to go for it!

They installed custom wood cabinets, but my dad really liked the idea of having a pop of color, so we sanded and painted over them with Farmhouse Paint. I've never painted cabinets so I was a little nervous, but they turned out great! If you are local to Battle Ground, Washington, Posh + Tattered carries Farmhouse paint it in their shop. I've tried many paints and it's my favorite so far.

Sorry about the low quality pictures, I had just snapped them with my phone as we were going along.

My brother painted the chalkboard wall and Tyler built the floating shelves. Taylor at @_katherine_taylor_ wrote all the quotes with chalk markers and she does awesome work!

This was a big project to take on, but it is definitely the focal point in their new house. If you can imagine, there are windows lined along the side wall with a beautiful mountain view. I'm sure there will be delicious coffee and wonderful memories made for years to come!

Office Makeover

I recently had the opportunity to create an office space for myself.

I wanted a wall of built-ins, but didn’t want to spend the money to hire someone to build them for me. I started looking for shelves that could be placed on the wall to make a built-in look, and everything I like would cost me a few thousand dollars and it still wouldn’t have the “built-in” look.

We started by ripping up the carpet in my husband’s old office, and putting on a fresh coat of paint. Didn’t get a good picture of the whole room with the lighting, but this shows the wall color and new flooring.

Here are my book cases. It took me a few hours to put them all together. I got them moved into my space and then it was my husbands turn to help.

I put together the same shelves in another color last year for shelving in my master closet.

We added trim pieces between each shelf, and then added a few boards that reach the ceiling, with trim and moulding. This helped to create a more custom, built-in look! I painted it and I’m still thrilled with the look of it each time I walk into the room!

I had a desk downstairs that was a collector of things. Anything the kids didn’t know where to put, got thrown on or in the drawers. I moved it to the office and changed it from black to grey very easily with chalk paint. I then added a wax finish to it. It was a very quick project and I’m thrilled with the results.

My almost completed office. I say “almost” because there are always little things I would like to do. I have one empty wall that I may add another chair or storage unit to, and a mirror.

I have plenty of storage on the shelves, and more in the closet, which is where I also keep my printer.

I got this little chest of drawers at Ikea. Another great storage option.

I purchased this map of the United States and little wooden push pins. I placed a push pin in the spots that my husband and I visit most frequently and are our favorite stops. I am thinking I will have him build a frame around the map to finish it off nicely.

How to Antique a Metal Pail

If you have been following along with my monthly contributor posts, you will recall the post on the floating shelves Tyler made for my living room. I briefly mentioned how I made a shiny metal pail look old and dull, and today I want to explain how I achieved that look.

I love old metal pails and had wanted to use one for an arrangement a few months ago. I wasn't having much luck finding it, so I bought a shiny pail from Hobby Lobby for about $2. I did some research on how to make it look old and found a very simple, easy fix.

I ended up doing many more and now my house has metal arrangements scattered throughout the rooms. On my last post, I ended up taking the pail I was using for my floating shelves and planted purple flowers in it for my porch. I bought a new pail and decided to use it as a demonstration.

All you need is Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner, steel wool and a pair of gloves (not pictured.)

I poured some cleaner on the steel wool, and in circular motions, scrubbed the pail. Make sure you have gloves because it will burn your hands if you come in contact with the toilet cleaner. I let it sit for about 30 minutes and used my hose outside to wash the cleaner off.

Side note: I have done this in many different weather conditions, and you will get different looks depending on how long you leave the cleaner on the pail and what the temperature is like. When it's very cold outside, I have left the pail for several hours, but today was 80+ so it didn't take long for the metal finish to age.

Here are a few more metal arrangements that I have used the same technique on:

I have two vases on either side of my mantle, and my favorite florist and very talented sister-in-law put the arrangements together.

This is a sneek peek of my little boy's dresser that I will share the process of refinishing it another time.

As you can see, each pail has it's own look and I really like that they aren't all the same. It's a very simple process and an easy way to add metal to each room. I hope you were inspired and will give it a try. As always, thanks for stopping by!

An Organized Refrigerator

Maintaining an organized refrigerator hasn’t always been my strong suit. Think about it, how many times are you in and out of your fridge each day? For us, I would guess at least 10, making it that much more difficult to keep it in order. I recently did a complete overhaul of refrigerator and it was also the perfect opportunity to pull everything out and give all the shelves and drawers a thorough scrub down. All in all, it took about 45 minutes. For such an easy task, it has made a giant impact! This is what it looked like just a few weeks ago.

I have tried and failed at organizing the refrigerator in the past, but I have a good feeling that the results will actually stick this time around. In fact, I even labeled everything, which means I’m committed to keeping it this way.

Before I show you what it looks like today, I wanted to share my motivations in taking on this project. My husband and I are trying to be extra cautious about our spending lately, and an organized refrigerator prevents us from overbuying because we can clearly see what we have. It also helps to combat food waste. I can’t tell you how many times I have thrown out hundreds of dollars worth of food because it went bad before we could use it. I always felt so guilty when tossing it out, but I’m happy to report that we haven’t had to throw out a single item yet! Since all of our leftovers are now kept in one location, we have been eating out less and are making a conscious effort to use what we have. Another positive result that I wasn’t expecting, is that I find myself reaching for healthier options when I get hungry rather than grabbing whatever is convenient out of the pantry. I have been taking the time to prep fruit and veggies when I get home from the grocery store, and can easily grab a serving of carrots rather than the oatmeal cream pies that my pregnancy cravings made me buy!

After living with our newly organize refrigerator for a few weeks, here is how it’s looking today.

I keep all of our bulk produce (items I plan on using for recipes or excess leftover from my snack prep) in one drawer, and breads in the other since we never use all of it before the expiration date.

Keeping fruits and veggies out of the produce bin and placing them in plain sight has made the biggest impact on our day-to-day life. Before doing this, it seemed liked they would always get lost in the mess or I would simply forget we had them.

Like I mentioned above, I also took the time to label everything so that I’m more inclined to keep it this way. The general categories I have are: meal prep, fruit, veggies, eggs, deli, lunch, beverages, bulk veggies, bread, leftovers, and meat. I keep condiments, milk, creamer, and butter in the door bins. It is suggested that you avoid storing milk in the door because it is the warmest spot in your refrigerator, but we have been doing it for years, and have never had a problem.

Call me crazy, but I want to do a happy dance every time I open the doors. It’s a shame that all this hard work is behind closed doors, because it is currently the most organized space in our house. I’ll just make it a point to casually open the refrigerator every time we have guests so I can show it off and in turn, they don’t think I’m a complete slob!

DIY Welcome Sign

Following along with DaNita's monthly challenge, I tackled my outdoor space. Moving into a new construction house has many benefits, but one of the downfalls is all the mud you have to deal with. We finally got around to pressure washing our concrete and are now focusing on getting grass planted in the areas that didn't take last summer.

I have a nice porch so I really wanted to get it decorated with spring/summer decor to liven up the space. I've been wanting to make a "Welcome" sign so I decided now would be the perfect time.

Tyler had a plywood board laying around so I stained it with Miniwax Dark Walnut (I really just love that color!)

I bought large stencils from Hobby Lobby and placed them on the board to see how I wanted to position them and to make sure I had enough room for all the letters.

I then took the first stencil, centered it on the board and traced the letter with a pencil.

One by one, I traced each letter and made sure they were all centered correctly. If I make a mistake, I just erase the letter and trace it again.

For stenciling, I like to use acrylic paint and a thin tip paint brush. Starting from the top, I painted in each letter. I carefully paint the outside lines and then fill in the inside.

After I finish painting each letter, I let it dry and apply another coat. It doesn't take nearly as long because you are just filling in the spots that need touch up. To add a little dimension, Tyler put a boarder around the sign with 1x2 pines and I painted it white.

May Challenge: Sprucing Up our Outdoor Spaces

So sorry, I'm a little late posting the challenge for May. I have so much going on. I was going to skip out on writing this post, but decided I can't do that. So here it is, short and sweet.

Small Toy Storage Solution

Small toy storage wasn’t something that I needed to consider until my son turned one. Now that he is at an age where I’m not too worried about him putting things in his mouth, we have a lot of smaller toy pieces and parts to deal with. The worst offender of all has been puzzles! It is so difficult to keep all of the pieces with the correct puzzle board. I tend to find them scattered throughout the house, usually in the most random places.

I think I have found the perfect solution though! I bought a few mesh laundry bags and they are the just the right size for our puzzle boards. For the larger puzzles, I store the board and the pieces together in a bag.

The puzzle boards that have several small pieces are stored in one of his toy bins, and the pieces are stored separately in small storage containers that I picked up at Target.

My son loves digging through his puzzle bin and choosing a puzzle board to play with. Although, his favorite thing lately has been opening all of the containers and dumping the pieces out…I should have known that he would like the container more than the toy itself!

We have another baby due in November, and I have a feeling our house is about to be overtaken by toys. Do I just go with it, or do I try to contain the chaos!? Feel free to share all of your small toy storage secrets with me!

DIY Floating Shelves

I have been eyeing floating shelves on Pinterest for quite some time. When we moved into our house, I found the perfect spot for shelves so I added it to the Honey Do List. My husband, Tyler grew up with a shop full of tools to build anything the heart desired. For this project, we didn't have all the suggested tools, but with some tinkering he made it work. Tyler liked to compare me asking him to build something to him asking me to make meatballs and mashed potatoes with a knife and microwave. Fair enough, but I think he did a great job! I had him follow this plan on Pinterest, but we decided to make the shelves slightly longer so they looked right on the wall I had chosen.

We stained the shelves with Miniwax Dark Walnut. Over the years, I've collected the decorations from a few different shops and stores, and I think they compliment each other nicely.

The metal pail with dried flowers was once a very shiny pail. I'll have to create a post on how I made it look old and dull so stay tuned ;)

Originally, I wanted three floating shelves, but it didn't flow nicely with the light switch so we added the hall table as an alternative.

I think the shelves are my favorite decoration in my house and I love how it adds dimension to the living room.

Simple Paper & Mail Organizing Tip

The spring-cleaning bug has kicked into high gear at our house and I am trying to take advantage of the motivation while it lasts. With that being said, our paper clutter is out of control! We currently receive mail at our house and at a PO Box that we set up while building our home. At any given time, we have several piles of paper scattered throughout our house and it’s driving me crazy.

Since March is DaNita’s Home Office Organization Challenge, what better time to tackle that paper clutter than now! I had a file organizer that we used in our previous home, but I needed to update it to make it relevant for our daily lives now. I went on a search for some cute file folders and came across these at Target.

I knew I wanted three categories: bill, action, and file. Here is how I use each folder with incoming mail.

Bill: This one is pretty obvious, but I use this folder to keep all of our bills that still need to be paid.

Action: This folder is used to hold any item that needs some sort of action like a phone call or e-mail.

File: This folder is for items that need to be filed.

At the beginning of the week, I go through each folder and pay any bills that have an upcoming due date, take care of the items that need further action, and file papers from the previous week.

Three categories work perfectly for us, but your family may need more than that. For example, you may want a folder for each member of the family. I’m sure as our family grows and our children get older, that will probably be the case for us as well. Currently, this system keeps things from being over complicated and best of all, the piles of paper are no more! I hope this simple organizing tip is helpful for all of you. Until next time!

Nautical Theme Baby Shower

In April, my sister-in-law is having her first baby! This will be the eighth grandchild for my parents and the sixth boy. Needless to say, we are very excited! At the end of February, we hosted a baby shower for her.

When I plan decorations for a shower, I like to know what the nursery theme is going to be and go according to that. My sister-in-law showed me a picture of a whale wall tapestry she was going to buy so I decided a nautical theme would be very fitting.

My husband, Tyler and I made rustic sailboats out of split pine logs and dowels. I was trying to find sailboat fabric and searched two different stores with no luck. I kept eyeing a receiving blanket that fit my vision, so I finally decided to use it and was very pleased with the final product.

(My "y's" on my sign may be backwards, but I guess that's my signature move!)

Instead of balloons or pom poms hanging above her chair, I made a baby mobile with an embroidery hoop, string and card stock paper punched into circles.

I asked Tyler if he could make a wooden whale and this is what he came up with after fifteen minutes with the Jig Saw and an old piece of plywood. I was thoroughly impressed with him! I painted the whale with some leftover white paint.

I stenciled the sign with acrylic paint and cut out triangles from card stock paper. We hung the sign above the juice and ice cream bar.

The shower was a great turnout and I had so much fun working on all the decorations. Now we are just anxiously waiting for baby Aho to arrive! Thanks for stopping by and see you next month.

Carnival Theme Birthday Party

So my baby boy turned two last week! I can't even believe it myself! I had this big "carnival" theme party planned for my little guy and I created a TON of fun printables for the party to add to my Etsy Shop.

Well, long story short, I had to cancel the party, because first he was sick, and then I was sick.

I had everything set up and decorated (for like a week in advance) and I even had the cake and cupcakes made. So my husband, our boys and I celebrated Cruz turning two a couple of nights ago... and of course, I took photo's of everything.

These straws?! They're from the Dollar Tree

These adorable plastic gum ball machines are from the Dollar Tree too.

Since these were going to be little kiddos coming to this party, I filled the gum ball machines with different kinds of candy and not gum balls (for chocking reasons.)

Paper shred to look like popcorn:

Balloons were suppose to be coming out of the bags on the mantle.

I even set up a photo booth:

... and we did do the photo booth!!

Oh yeah and I made my baby his "If you mustache, I'm two" shirt too.

Hey, you know... It would have been a fun party!! In all reality, we did have fun... AND the 2 year old? Well, he won't remember that all his friends didn't get to celebrate with him.
