Late Summer and Fall 2015 provides an opportunity to expand your artistic horizons. Delphi's Creativity Center in Lansing, MI presents new techniques introduced by Guest Instructors on the cutting edge of art glass innovation. This season renowned glass artists Wesley Wong, Margaret Zinser and Tim Drier impart their innovative new ideas and techniques to student glassworkers at Delphi.

	Wesley Wong Wesley Wong is an award-winning artist who designs and produces custom glass art from his studio in San Jose, California. His passion for glass started in 1981 with stained glass, which eventually lead him into mosaics and fused glass. His work features lots of bright colors and intricate patterns and has been exhibited in many juried glass and mosaic shows throughout the United States. Fused Monarch Butterfly Friday, September 11, 2015 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Register Now Description Create a 7" fused glass Monarch butterfly that can be incorporated into a mosaic project or mounted for display. Techniques will be covered for adding wire for the antennae, angling the wings to appear like it is flying, and how to scale down the butterflies for ornaments. Students will learn how to attach hardware for mounting the butterfly for wall display or as a garden stake. Students will also have the opportunity to make a pendant-sized ladybug or bee as time permits. The fused glass Monarchs were featured in the Summer 2013 issue of Glass Patterns Quarterly magazine. Skill Level: Intermediate, basic glass cutting skills required.
Dimensional Fusing with Fancy Fish Saturday, September 12, 2015 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Register Now Description Want to add dimension and texture to your fused glass pieces or fused elements for mosaics? This hands-on class will teach you techniques for adding texture and movement for 3-dimensional effects through the use of various fused glass materials, glass paints, and fiber paper. Students will make a large 7” fish that can be incorporated into a mosaic piece or as a standalone piece. Techniques for adding a wire loop for wall display, and resizing and reorienting the pattern will be covered. Students will also make a 4”x4” fused tile that can be rigged for hanging. Skill Level: Intermediate, basic glass cutting skills required.
Fused Glass Mosaics Sunday, September 13, 2015 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Register Now Description This class combines the techniques of mosaics with fused glass to produce a unique work of art. Students will be provided with a variety of patterns to choose from and shown several ways to cut glass into small tesserae or glass tiles. We will cover the andamento or visualflow and placement of the tesserae to complement your design. Students will create a 6x6 fused mosaicthat can be used as a glass tile or incorporated into a larger project.We will also demonstrate how to expand on this technique to producea double-sided fused glass mosaic with lots of depth. Skill Level: All skill levels, basic glass cutting skills recommended.

	Margaret Zinser Margaret began flameworking in 2001 while working as a lab scientist, preparing for graduate work in Entomology. She loved the technical challengeof working with a molten medium. Class: Flora & Fauna Friday, September 25, 2015 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Register Now Description Margaret will show her strategies for sculpting nature-inspired beads and pendants out of soft glass in this 1-day workshop. Many insect-themes will be covered, but if bugs aren’t your thing, Margaret will help you adapt the relief sculpting techniques she uses to your own repertoire and artistic content. Work both on and off mandrel, using sculpting and flameworking techniques to create neat details on flameworked jewelry! Leaves and other foliage, caterpillars, butterflies, ladybugs, and so many more fun designs will be included. For intermediate (or advanced) beadmakers. Materials and use of tools included.
Class: Bugs, Butterflies & Mazes: Sclupting & Enamel Painting Saturday, Sunday, September 26-27, 2015 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Register Now Description This this fast paced and FUN workshop is for intermediate (or advanced) beadmakers. Learn to add another dimension of detail to your work. Discover the essentials for adding surface detail with vitreous enamel paints, learn safe handling of glass powders and enamels. Leave class understanding how to properly mix enamel for various applications; how to apply enamel paint to beads; how to correct mistakes and how to “fire” finished pieces. Learn Margaret’s techniques for sculpting shaping tools to create detailed beads and pendants. If bugs aren’t content that interests you, Margaret will help you translate your own designs using techniques covered in class. Techniques for sculpting, painting, and firing work made without a mandrel (AKA the beadmaker’s security blanket) will also be included in class. Materials and use of tools included.

	Tim Drier Tim Drier has been a glassblower for 25 years, and applies his scientific glassblowing expertise to artistic flameworking. He concentrates on creating decanters, goblets, vases, and human sculptural forms. Drier has taught flameworking courses at The Studio and the Pittsburgh Glass Center, and has demonstrated at the International Flameworker’s Conference at Salem Community College. Class: Introduction to Hollow Forms Friday-Saturday, November 20-21, 2015 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Register Now! Description Tim’s two day course offers a fun stress free and creative range of flameworking techniques for the beginner as well as for the intermediate flameworking artist. Using borosilicate glass, students will be taught to make and create a variety of small solid sculptural forms, with the focus on moving into the exciting and unlimited options that hollow tubing can offer. Students will learn to use a blow hose and create small hollow vessels, beads, and small goblets. Topics including using and adding color for detail and sandblasting for depth and interest will also be a part of this awesome class. Some previous experience with torches and borosilicate is recommended but not required for this flameworking class.

	Peter McGrain Award winning artist/designer Peter McGrain has been working with stained glass for over 30 years. During this time he has handled every type of stained glass project imaginable; ranging in scope from intimate experimental panels to large-scale architectural installations. Class: Introduction to Traditional Glass Painting Friday, June 5, 2015 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Register Now Description Painting on glass is by far the most effective way to add energetic expression and the appearance of gestural immediacy to your glass artwork. Learning the basics of traditional glass painting will enable you to achieve all the visual effects you’ve been dreaming of. This class offers a comprehensive introduction into the various aspects of genuine glass painting techniques, including the use of traditional glass stainer’s paints, silver stains, and kiln-fired enamels. Students will learn how to specially prepare and apply these paints to any glass surface, as well as how to effectively develop any type of image using painted linework, texture and shading. This class is an absolute must for anybody who wants to take their glass artwork in a more exciting and visually stunning direction. Description

Imagine creating bright colorful stained glass compositions without the mechanical or aesthetic burdon of lead lines! It’s possible with Peter McGrain’s newly developed Vitri-Fusáille process. Vitri-Fusáille is a hybrid technique which combines the processes of Contemporary Flat Fusing with Traditional Glass Painting.
In this class students will create their own project using the Vitri-Fusáille process. You’ll be amazed how carefree stained glass can be when you don’t need to worry about the difficulty of using lead and solder to hold your stained glass picture together! No soldering required! Working with a pallet of System 96 compatible glass you will learn how to effectively design, execute and fire a Vitri-Fusáille project. Also included will be an overview of the basic Fusing and Traditional Painting Techniques which make this amazing process possible. These include preparing the design, cutting the colored glass elements, fusing a base tile, and developing the finished imagery using the methods of tracing and matting with kiln fired paints.
Vitri-Fusáille elements can be used for window art, doorway panels, room dividers, and even lighting fixtures. No experience required.

	Deb Crowley Deb has been creating art for over 40 years, 25 of that in glass. She creates blown, lampworked, fused, sandblasted and all types of cold worked glass like stained and faceted. Many of these techniques are incorporated into her art work. Deb has taught nationwide for over twenty years and really enjoys passing on her knowledge to others. Expand your skills to include sculpture and see how to develop silver colors in the same class! Learn tips and secrets from Deb’s many years of flameworking to create realistic animals while keeping it all HOT! Class: Beginning Boro Tubing: Vessels, Shells and Hollow Fish Pendants Sunday, June 21, 2015 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Register Now Description Not sure where to start blowing borosilicate tubing? Have you tried it and ended up frustrated? Then this is the class for you! We will blow small vessels to fill with memories like the clear round one with my Bahamas sand and seahorse, or a perfume necklace. Next we will make a beautiful seashell, blowing and shaping and then cutting it open and piercing it to wear or hang. Finally we will make hollow fish, either with a loop to wear or to leave on a punty. Learn what size tubing you need for each item, heat base of hollow items, and cold, warm and hot seals. Some lampworking experience required.

In 2014 we created a Pinterest board dedicated to every color. Our board Breathtaking Blues was a top pick with our followers. Mosaic Portraiture Starts: May 17, 2014 Ends: May 18, 2014 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Sold Out Description In this intermediate-level workshop you will use traditional and non-traditional mosaic techniques to understand structure, cross-contour, highlights, color, gradation, value and types of shadows. You will learn how to "see" things differently with artist tricks and learn fine art techniques such as understanding facial structure, color and value in order to create and discover realism in mosaic art. You'll learn to mix glass values and colors to define planes, and how to use color most effectively. Carol will help you to develop your own style and foster an eye for mosaic. There will be a one hour demonstration and you'll begin a life-like 12" x 12" mosaic portrait from a photograph.

	Kent Lauer Kent has been working with glass for more than 30 years. What started as a fascination with glass soon became a career. Kent learned to bevel early in his art glass career, and was determined to find out everything he could about pushing the limits of beveled glass. We are excited about the Spring 2014 lineup of talented glass art experts teaching classes at Delphi's Creativity Center in Lansing, MI. Each artist brings their own unique skill set and techniques that any student from beginner to professional artist would enjoy.

First up is cast and kiln formed glass artist, Gloria Badiner. Badiner is a former scientist and studio artist living and working in rural Southwest Michigan. Her studio, Arts & Artifacts, makes commissioned and custom kiln formed glass for architects, designers and furniture makers. Commissioned work includes cast panels, high relief tiles and sculptures as site-specific installations in businesses and residences.

Her sculptures include fused, kiln cast, sand cast and dalle de verre works mostly on an intimate scale and are often mixed with copper, silver, stone, bone and found elements. The themes of night and day, nature and human ritual are strong themes woven into her work.

Description

Every artist needs to freshen and review procedures and techniques from time to time. This class is designed to help artists broaden skills and make the most of their kilns. We will examine the best methods of kiln fusing, slumping and casting.

Small exercises will take the student through a comparison of techniques creating a series of samples to serve as reference in the studio. This is a hands-on, fast paced session. Students are encouraged to bring in work that has not met their expectation for critique and trouble-shooting.

Badiner's most recent three-dimensional exhibitions display a commonality of “The Offering”. A series of kiln cast bowls filled with cast, fused and found objects honoring the needs of humans, i.e. food, medicine, fire, family, art and creativity. Recent two-dimensional works include a series of cast glass panels for a wall waterfall installation and a commission for an Embassy in Washington DC. She also serves as a technical consultant to the glass and ceramic industry and teaches kiln forming throughout the United States.

Passionate for Purple

Like all glass artists, I love color. Any color, every color – but one color in particular. Purple.

So, when Radiant Orchid was named the 2014 Color of the Year in the spring Pantone color report, I will admit I was pretty excited.

Radiant Orchid manages to combine the luxurious richness of purple with the light-hearted fun of pink. Drawing from both the purple and pink color families, orchid elicits feelings of passion and energy – it is associated with insight, mystery, magic and ambition as well as hope, peace and good judgement. Plus, being in the purple family, it is considered a royal color; who doesn't love that?
