Travel aside, it’s been a busy month! I’ve been doing some guest-blogging on A Photo Editor, writing some posts on photo assisting which have gotten some pretty positive responses (I think) and have opened up some good discussion about the industry. Just wanted to bang out a quick post to share some behind the scenes photos from one of my recent editorials! A couple months ago, I shot a cool fashion spread for Elite Traveler. The concept was “Street Smart” – a fusion of downtown New York’s raw, urban street style, and uptown haute couture (we wanted the models to look kind of like rich rebels). Though it looks like we shot in the Lower East Side (this was intentional), we actually shot in and around Parlay Studios in Jersey City. Thanks to an awesome creative team, our stylist Katie Burnett, our make-up artist Jessi Butterfield and our excellent models, I think we got some nice shots! Hope you enjoy.

An insert, before I begin: for many young photographers, assisting is a the way in the door for understanding and working in the crazy world of commercial and editorial photography. I remember my first assisting gig, seven years ago. It was at Pier 59 Studios in New York City, and the photographer I was assisting was Gilles Bensimon, who was shooting Mandy Moore for the cover of Elle Magazine (you can see the cover here). I was the third assistant and I had no idea what I was doing! Fast forward seven years later and I think I have a better clue… So on that note:

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Because nursing that nasty hangover while trying to make that 5am call time is not fun. So get your seven hours because you’ll need it! Sometimes you’ll get eighteen-hour, laborious days. Equipment will fail,  attitudes will flare, and egos will clash under the pressure to capture that perfect image. As an assistant you’re right in the middle of that madness, trying to deliver and communicate effectively with photographers who in some cases, are losing their shit. Obviously, this isn’t always the case. Many shoots will often go smoothly and seamlessly. But if I’ve learned anything in this industry, it’s to hope for the best and plan for the worst. To that end (and I can’t stress it enough): get a good night’s sleep. Or you’ll end up like my buddies here, busted snoozing on the job.

I kind of feel like travel is in my blood: I was born in Germany, raised in Colorado, went to school in California, live in New York and, thanks to work, have been lucky enough to spend time in the Congo, across Europe, Korea, the Caribbean, Central America, and other incredible places. In a nutshell, I love seeing the world and experiencing different beers… I mean cultures.

This month, I was lucky enough to spend some time in beautiful Costa Rica. It was my first trip to the country, and my girlfriend and I spent our days riding horses through the Guanacaste mountains, hiking through the rainforest to some breathtaking waterfalls, swimming at the pristine Playa Avellanas and snorkeling off the Tamarindo coast. After working so hard, it was great to just be away and be amongst nature. The Costa Rican cervezas were nice, too! Some pictures below.

In a few weeks, I’ll be heading to Sydney, Australia for my first summer Christmas. I’ll make sure to take lots of pictures, so stay tuned for that (and also a series of blog posts I’m working on about photo assisting – a topic I’m pretty familiar with!).

A bit of a plug post, but for good reason! My good friend Ephrat ‘Bounce’ Asherie is directing and choreographing an incredible new multimedia dance show called  ”A Single Ride.” It’s playing at Dixon Place from September 20th – 29th. The show is an exploration of the relationship between New Yorkers and the subway, and touches on wider issues – where did we come from and where are we going? You can expect to see a fusion of breakdance, house and vogue.

Anyway, I was stoked when Ephrat commissioned me to take the media/promo images for her show. I have a long history of dance in my family, and it’s always been a passion of mine, even though I’m probably the worst dancer on this planet! Here are a couple of the images we took at a subway station in the Lower East Side. Please go check out the show! It’s playing at Dixon Place now.

I’m not going to lie – I’m actually pretty excited about the fall. It’s the best time of year in New York, in my opinion. Still, it’s always a little sad watching the fading of the long, hot days and lazy afternoons on the beach. Thankfully, I have some great summer memories – spending Fourth of July on the colorful, crazy Coney Island, camping out in the Catskills with friends, swimming in the beautiful and tranquil Big Pond Lake. (Side note: if you want to embark on some similar, outdoorsy, end-of-summer adventures, NYC Parks and Recreation have tons of awesome ideas on their site. It’s not too late!).

So as you can see, I’ve changed my blog up a little. It’s cleaner, the design’s a little more streamlined, and it’s more easily accessible from my main website. Unfortunately the blog redesign obliterated many of my old posts, but’s it’s all good. There’s lots more good stuff to come in the future, and I’m excited to share it with you!

So for the first post on this “new” blog, I thought I’d share some photographs I took of birds in flight. There’s something about watching birds in flight that feels kind of haunting and liberating at the same time. There’s something amazing about how free these creatures are, and I’m continually inspired to capture that. These shots were taken with 35mm film on my trusty Pentax in Rockaway Beach in Brooklyn, New York and in Santa Monica, California. I hope you take a few moments out of your busy day to enjoy these.
