Her father was Tommy DeMoulpied. Tommy's sister is Jennie. Sandy has been visiting Aunt Jennie, age 93, and has put together a narrative below. Sandy's Great Grandfather, Thomas, was born to Nicholas who came over to Wisconsin from Guernsey and established the "Midwest" lineage of de Moulpieds. More to come...enjoy!

Archie
and Jessie (Currier) DeMoulpied were married on March 23, 1914. They rode in on horse and buggy
to Traverse
City from Central Lake to get married at the Justice of
the Peace.

Dad was
born at home in what Aunt Jennie calls the “Tarpaper shack” (or tenant house) in
Yuba. Aunt Jennie recalls that when the
baby (Dad) was close to being born, Grandma and Grandpa made her walk to her
Aunt Margie’s house in Yuba (Archie’s sister). They did not want her to be
there when he was born. She was 8 at the time.

The
tarpaper shack was moved to the farm after the original farmhouse burned down.
The roof caught fire when sparks and hot ashes fell on it from the
chimney. Aunt Jennie recalls her mom
& dad putting her in the first “enclosed” vehicle they had. She may have been 3 or 4. They told her to stay there while they
retrieved belongings from the burning house.
She also recollects feeling the heat of the fire inside the car.

Archie
& Jessie DeMoulpied lost the Yuba farm in the depression. From there they
moved to a house near the Yuba Creek just off the main “highway” (31). Then they moved to a farmhouse on the Elk Lake Road.
When they moved again in 1935 to Acme’s Deepwater Point, Aunt Jennie
stayed with friends so that she could finish out her 8th grade
school year at Williamsburg High School.
In 1937 they moved to Cedar Street in Traverse City.
The house was and still is at the corner of Cedar and Third Streets,
right across the street from Mark & Kerri’s duplex. That’s when Dad started Kindergarten at the Elmwood School at age 7. He would walk to and from school on his own
until the kids at Immaculate Conception school made fun of him. Then his sister-in-law, Edith (Ervie) started
walking with him. They moved to Monroe Street after that. The fourth house from Randolph Street, on the east side. Aunt Jennie says they live on Randolph Street too, either before or after Monroe.
They also lived on Wayne Street after that. When Dad was in his late teens, his parents
had a cottage built on Spider Lake.
Grandpa Archie’s friend asked “Why in the hell would you want to be way
out there in the sticks” according to Aunt Jennie. They stayed at the cottage in the summers and
rented a cottage at 818 East Front Street near the college in the
winters. I asked Aunt Jennie where they
got the money to build the cottage. She
said she really didn’t know. She thinks
that friends and neighbors help build it over a period of time. Archie was not
much of a carpenter or particularly handy.
In the early years, Aunt Jennie recalls her dad working on the
railroad. But later when they lived in Traverse City, he worked as a janitor in the TC
School System. Grandma Jessie worked odd
jobs. She remembers she worked at the
“Little Mill” on Front Street sorting beans. She also worked at a small café called “Tom’s
Red Hots” downtown. She worked in the
kitchen. Tom wanted her to waitress but
she suggested that he hire her 15 year old daughter, Jennie. And she did.
Jessie also worked in the kitchen at the Elmwood School.

After
Archie passed away, Jessie apparently sold the cottage and bought a house on Rose Street by the railroad tracks (now the
TART trail). Archie died at the county
hospital which was out on Cass Road where the TCAPS busses are now
kept. He died of heart failure. A family friend worked at the hospital and
called Jennie’s house to say that he was not doing well. Jessie was staying with Aunt Jennie and Uncle
Dan at the time. Jessie did not want to
go to the hospital so Jennie went by herself.
When she arrived, her dad was in a back storage room with 6-7 other men
on cot-like beds. It was like they were because they knew they were near death
and there was nothing they could do for them. When she realized how bad off he
was, she went to get her mother. By the
time the two returned, Archie had passed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Thomas
James DeMoulpied (my great-grandfather) was married to Lavina (Hosmer). They had children Clarence, Archie (my
grandfather) and Margie. They were quite a “well to do” prominent family and
lived in Central
Lake in
what looks like quite a nice house. Aunt Jennie has mentioned a couple of times

The current owner was just in contact...

"There are 2 identical buildings. One is called the Belmont and the other the Milton. Named after the current streets in Manchester NH."

She is trying to put the buildings on a historical registry and would like to get as much information as possible.

"Very curious how long it took to build these beautiful buildings, I was told they were always apartment buildings."

Edwin Le Gresley (grandson of Joseph de Mouliped) moved to California before 1930. However, he was still listed in the Manchester Directory as of 1921. He had a son Reginald, and a daughter Vivian. It seems Reginald perhaps did not marry, but more research is needed. Vivian graduated from UCLA around 1934 and married Pierson Forderer. They had Yvon Forderer around 1938 according to a 1940 census, living at: 384 Santa Anita Avenue Pasadena Judicial Los Angeles, Ca. Yvonn married David Arnold Todd II and is now living in Oklahoma. More on this family lineage at a later date.

The apartments have a lovely website: http://www.pillarmanors.com/. They have been beautifully restored and are quite elegant.

What made the 2013 year special was it featured Charles' de Mouilpied's furniture store. According to the calender, the approximate year is 1915. The building still stands as a mainstay for Elm St. Earlier locations of his store are elsewhere on Elm St. and other locations in Manchester. This is perhaps the last location of the business.
She says:

I
have been researching my ancestors for about two years now. My
maternal Great Grandfather, Arthur Le Patourel, was born in St. Peter
Port, Guernsey in 1881. His paternal Great Grandparents were Daniel
Marquand Le Patourel and Judith de Mouilpied. I have traced the Le
Patourel family history, on Guernsey, back to 1550 but, unfortunately, I
have been unable to find out more about Judith de Mouilpied.

All
I know about her is that she was born in St. Martin in 1808. Judith
and Daniel had six children; Rachel (Patty) who was born in 1831, Daniel
b.1836, Mary b.1838, Susan b.1841, Peter b.1845 and Henriette b.1848.

Do you have any idea who Judith's parents were? Does anyone have access to the St. Martin's records?

Can you help? Please contact me! Thanks.

Joseph de Mouilpied Ministered in Sorel, Canada

Up until now, the first ministerial position we knew for Joseph de Mouilpied was at St. Peter's Church in Malbay in 1860. There now appears to be some mention of him being at a church in Sorel, Quebec just prior to St. Peter's. Sorel is located between Montreal and Trois Rivieres on the Eastern side of the river, south of Nicolet. Pierreville is between Sorel and Nicolet. This is from a history book:

"In 1852, the parish activity increased sufficiently so as to merit an
assistant clergyman. The Rev. Puricelle S. Williams was a missionary at
River David, in the old Seigneury of Bourg Marie de l'Est. His services
were obtained, and he came to Christ Church as curate to the Rector,
while continuing his services at River David. He remained until 1857,
when he was replaced by the Rev. Joseph De Mouilpied, who maintained the
curacy until 1859. While serving at Sorel, Mr. De Mouilpied apparently
also ministered to a group at Pierreville, Que.

An act of Parliament in 1860 changed the name of the town from
"William Henry" to "Sorel", the old name of M. de Saurel never having
been totally disused. Now the name of Prince William Henry became part
of the history of Sorel, identified with the early growth and
development of a town."

If you would like to connect with this person, just email me. This is what she had to say:

"I live in a small town called Cummins, in South Australia.

My
mother (Jaqueline Anne, born Amhurst, Guernsey, 1951) is a DeMouilpied,
one of 6 children of Rex (dec) and Madeleine (nee Bougourd). My
grandparents came to Australia in the 1950's I believe, and resided at
Coffs Harbour, New South Wales. I grew up in Coffs Harbour, but married
and moved to South Australia ten years ago.

I would love to know more about the origin

Marie Blondel married Thomas de Mouilpied probably around 1808 or 1809 since their first child Marie was born in 1810. A previous blog post goes into the Blondel/deMouilpied marriage and the connection to Blondel de Nesle, the Minstrel. Several de Moulpied cousins have pulled out the same photo from a drawing that shows the Blondel Crest. It was originally with the deMouilpied crest as seen here.

On Islands like Guernsey, the crests (not coats) may have changed through the generations, or so I have been told. There is suppose to be a Blondel crest in the St. Saviour's Parish Church which was the parish of many Blondels. I was told it was in a corner, up high, just in case you happen to be in there and would like to confirm the sighting and also know if it is the same. (a photo would be fantastic!) What is interesting is a fancy "buy your family crest now" website actually has a similar crest with all the same number of windows. Very interesting. The image above is also in French.
Apparently a Nicolas de Mouilpied jumped ship before the 1900's and his son, also a Nicolas, went on to have 10 or 11 children. Some members have dropped the beginning de and also that first "i" resulting in the last name Moulpied. It is estimated the jumping Nicolas was born in 1883ish and his father, also probably a Nicolas b. 1840ish.

If you have any more information or genealogy on this branch of the family which settled in Wales, kindly be in touch. There are some enthusiastic de Mouilpieds (and Moulpieds) wanting to meet their local cousins.

Cheers.

Arthur Ward de Moulpied

I happened to be in York, Maine today for an event and remembered that a deMoulpied was buried there. I thought Charles Kenneth de Moulpied was buried there but it turned out to be Arthur Ward de Moulpied. Before I went, some Internet clues suggested the First Parish Cemetery. The church is located right on the main drag going into York Village; a beautiful 250 year old building.
After driving up and down the rows, just on my way out I found the grave stone of Arthur Ward de Moulpied, section O, Lot TS, Row Z. The church has a list of people buried there.

The second photo here is as you enter the cemetery, looking to the left. The third stone back on the left is Arthur's.
Arthur Ward de Moulpied was born, according to my records, on December 5, 1892. However, on his grave stone it says 1893. I guess we'll have to sort that out.

Aurthur died on February 21, 1938 at the age of 45 (or so), still a very young man, leaving behind two very young children, Deborah and David. (not me)

Arthur married Margaret E. Cheney, b. April 29, 1909; d. 1992.

Arthur was the second child born to Alfred de Moulpied, b. March 12, 1861, Quebec, d. September 5, 1925 in Manchester, NH; and Marcella Ward, b. Oct 1863, d. August 8, 1929.

Arthur lived most of his life in Manchester. He apparently liked his politics and worked as a reporter for the Manchester Union Leader. He also served as a State Representative for New Hampshire.

Arthur also liked York, Maine. I remember my father talking about spending summers at the beach when he was a child. So it must have been the thing to do.

It was a lovely day in York. Since this was written in the late 1600's, 100 years after the de Mouilpied (early spellings in Guernsey use de Mouillepied) Huguenots went to Guernsey, at least there remained a du Port in France.

So who went to Guernsey? Were they sons who would not be inheriting property and did not work for the King? Were they sons who became protestant and fled? These are mysteries still to be solved. Note on the second photo the cursive iron writing on the house at the entrance of the name Mouilpied. An additional photo is of a recently renovated project of the local "fountain" on the street of Les Mouilpieds. I can't quite read it all, but there seems to be a path to what used to be running water. The plaque also goes out a limb with its translation of "muddy feet", which isn't quite as nice as "spring-fed". Enjoy the photos.

The Priaulx Library - Guernsey's Genealogy Center

Just a reminder that the heart of genealogy archives is the Priaulx Library, in St. Peter Port, Guernsey. Not sure if a de Mouilpied is in there, but maybe another Guernsey ancestor is. You can always write her and ask for a list of names I suppose. I am in the US but have a Guernsey Mariette/Marriette ancestor, Jaques, who married Ann Ollivier, dau of Samuel Ollivier & Marthe de Mouillpied. I have the baptismal records for 2 children of Samuel Ollivier & Marthe de Mouillpied (1720's) in St. Martin's. The marriage record for my ancestor, Anne, lists Samuel Ollivier & Marthe de Mouillpied as being "of La Fosse".

Beyond these details, I've not found any other direct link to the ancestors or siblings of this Marthe De Mouilpied! I have read through land records and church records but to no avail as of yet. It seems like Marthe would likely have been born not much later than 1700 considering the age of her children as well.

In addition, I do have mention of a Daniel De Mouillpied in late 1700's, also connected to my Marriette family as well as a Jeanne De Mouille-pied, listed as a godmother, to my ancestor Daniel Mariette, b 1754. (St Peter Port church)

I would be delighted to learn if you ever see my Marthe de Mouilpied or if you run across the following allied Channel Island names: Mariette/Marriette, Olivier/Ollivier, Blanche, Tourtel.

best wishes for a rich and rewarding research!! susanpatt@mac.com

Nhill Cemetery, Australian de Mouilpieds

Just to follow the previous entry, I came across this site listing the de Mouilpieds who are buried in the Nhill Cemetery, located in Victoria, Australia. A friend from Manchester,NH, Dick, sent me this link to an article about a couple finding the original tombstone for Joseph de Moulpied.
http://www.unionleader.com/article.aspx?articleId=d67ff604-65b8-463e-8dac-000b332bca20
In the event that the paper stops the link, I will copy the article below:

By MARK HAYWARD
New Hampshire Union Leader
Saturday, Jun. 13, 2009

MANCHESTER – John Crawford made a rather odd discovery when he was clearing brush beside the house he moved into this past winter.

When his rake hit something solid, he was sure it was a piece of granite. But when he cleared the brush and a discarded Christmas tree, Crawford discovered a misplaced tombstone -- complete with a name, birth date and death date.

"It kind of freaked me out a little bit," said Crawford, who moved into the house at 42 Garfield Road about four months ago. His home is two houses from the corner of Calef Road and the sprawling Pine Grove Cemetery.

"It really doesn't make sense for this to be over here at all," Crawford said. "That belongs in a graveyard, not beside my garage."

The 20-by-15-inch stone bears the name of Joseph DeMoulpied, who lived from 1824 to 1903, according to its inscription.

While the city Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries Department could give no explanation of how the stone ended up beside the garage, information is available about DeMoulpied.

He was born in Guernsey, a small archipelago in the English Channel, according to a geology blog maintained by the DeMoulpied family. He eventually left the islands for Canada and served as an Anglican minister in Quebec.

Three of his children emigrated to America, and DeMoulpied showed up in Manchester in a 1900 census, living with his son Alfred.

John Crawford made a rather odd discovery when he was clearing brush beside the house he moved into this past winter. (DAVID LANE)

Cemetery workers removed the stone from Crawford's yard Wednesday, and it is has been placed in storage, said Judith Aron, cemetery supervisor at Pine Grove. When a burial is scheduled for the family lot, the cemetery will inform the family of the stone and ask them what they would like to do, she said.

She could not explain how the stone ended up at the Garfield Street home.

Cemetery records said Joseph was buried March 22, 1903, at Lot 2520, which he had purchased himself. In May 1915, the remains were removed and re-interred in the family plot -- Lot 3703 Chapel Lawn.

A large monument on the lot has the family name with a slightly different spelling -- DeMouilpied.

The house that Crawford rents has a large, fenced-in yard filled with an old travel trailer, a scrap pile and a storage shed. After discovering the DeMoulpied stone, Crawford combed the yard and found nothing else connected with the cemetery, he said.

He said he's glad to have discovered the stone.

"It's good I found it," Crawford said. "He's a minister; I'm sure he was a good man. Put him back where his son is."

The DeMoulpied blog said Joseph is buried alongside the family of his son Charles. Alfred has a separate plot, according to the blog, which is written by Debby DeMoulpied.

"What a life he must have had," wrote Debby, DeMoulpied's great-great-grandaughter. "Early-mid 1880s in quiet Guernsey and then taking such risk to move to Canada to minister with the hardships of such a remote area.

"And then finishing his life in bustling Manchester, the heart of millyards and the Industrial Revolution."

What fun!

John and Henry de Mouilpied in Australia

Dianne Lockett has written and kindly sent some photos regarding the John and Henry connection in Australia. On both early genealogy charts, (on the left of this blog) in the fourth generation you see Thomas marrying Michelle Robert. Well he did, but according to the family records in Guernsey, he also married Rachel Robert, probably a sister. Cousin Kathy recalls Rachel was first. Whew. According to the records, Michelle had 4 children, 3 girls starting names with "M", and one son. The 2 charts differ in total children. It appears one died within a year and the next child carried the same name, looks like Nicolas, from whom I descend.

Also, on the recent family chart, one of Thomas's daughter is listed as Laurence. It should be spelled Lorence (female name) married to Jean (male name for John). Confusing I know.

Cousin Kathy has created a large GED file that I hope to get on line soon. Stay with me!
Thanks Kathy for all your hard work. Also, if anyone on Guernsey wants to look any of this up, we would love it! Thanks.

deMouilpied Family Chart

I have heard from cousin Jane in England. Andrew comes by way of Emily de Mouilpied b.1849, Joseph's oldest child. Emily married John Le Gresley, 1867, another close Guernsey family. They had a daughter Edith Emily Le Gresley b. Oct. 4, 1872.

Edith went on to marry John James Le Gros, apparently an old Jersey name. The Le Gros name still remains in St. Peter Point, Gaspe, Canada, as the Le Gros House seen on the left side of this blog. They had 6 children: John Arthur b. 1897; Gladys Muriel b. 1903; Doris Emily b. 1905; Sydney James b. 1907; Winnifred b. 1909 and Harold b.1912. This Le Gros name is what Andrew needs help with. (Andrew comes by way of Sydney)

John James Le Gros had a father who was also a John James Le Gros who was born abt. 1840 in St. Mary, Jersey (the other Channel Island) His father was Thomas LeGros, b. 1811 also in St. Mary's, Jersey. And this is where Andrew needs help, he just can't seem to go back before Thomas.

Does anyone have information about the Le Gros family from Jersey?
Does any one know any one in Jersey who can help?

I know Guernsey has a fantastic library with Family Names on file filled with genealogy information. Does anyone know if Jersey's Library does the same?

If you are a descendant from Edith Emily Le Gros, Andrew has a great lineage and chart created. He also has documents about marriages, burials etc. And Andrew is enthusiastic. I'm not sure when they married, but safe to say probably before their first child. If anyone has that information ... do tell please.

Though the focus here is deMouilpied, this Blondel family story is just too good to not blog about, it's amazing really. Marie Blondel descends from one of the more prominent Guernsey families on the Island, including the Blondels who once occupied the famous Le Gron House in St. Saviours. Her documented lineage goes back to the 1200's. A Balif Blondel is listed on one of the earliest Guensey Documents dated 1204 when Guernsey became independent from France. But there's more to the story - The Minstrel Blondel.

The Legend about Blondel de Nesle is one of the most romantic stories in English History. Books and articles have been written, and even a musical by Tim Rice. Blondel really was a minstrel, a troubadour, (trouvere in french) with over 20 songs and poetry, some archived in the British Museum and Oxford. Blondel was Minstrel to the infamous King Richard I of England, also known as The Lionheart. (the Disney movie Robin Hood talks about King Richard away on crusades, that's the one!) The most lengthy recently written book is called "Blondel's Song" by English writer David Boyle, worth every word on each page (called The Troubadour's Song" in the U.S.). Basically, Blondel rescues King Richard I and the rest is... history. All the links will bring you up to date on the available information about Blondel.

So what's the intrigue? The intrigue is that I grew up hearing the story about Blondel the Minstrel and being told, without a doubt, that we were direct descendants. Okay, so maybe my father was nutty about these stories passed down through the years...BUT. Why did so many other cousins, with whom there has only been recent contact, grow up hearing the same story? Cousin Kathy, Deb, Audrey, Rose-Mary and more, all have heard the same story. Cousins in England and Guernsey too. Kathy has an old letter talking about the Minstrel. I'll try to put it up on the blog next time.

The family story goes that the King rewarded Blondel with Property on Guernsey, unfortunately this would have to date from around 1200; almost impossible to find such records. Some legends have Blondel born in Picardi, France, but there is no record or proof of Blondel or other famliy lineage being from that area. The bulk of early Blondels, like de Moulpied , originate from Guernsey, over 1000 years ago.

My father told me the story several times, that he had heard himself, each time welling up with tears over the romantic possibility that we were descendants. So, much to my excitement, when I found our connection to Marie Blondel, I took heart that perhaps we really are descendants.

So my question to descendants of this marriage between Thomas deMoulpied and Marie Blondel, or descendants of Guersney Blondels, have you been told you were a descendant from the Minstrel Blondel de Nesle, the famous Troubadour??

To recap descendants:

Thomas deMoulpied married Marie Blondel and they had 7 children:
Marie 1810-1891;
Thomas b.1812, married Elizabeth Torode (another well known Guernsey name);
Rachel 1814-1873;
Jean (John) b.1816;
Sophie 1818-1852;
Charlotte 1821-1909, married Francis de la Mare; and
Joseph 1824-1905, married Sophie Ogier (my great great grand parents).
Thomas, Charlotte and Joseph were the only ones we know that had children.
Do you know more?

Need Help Finding deMouilpieds?
