Juban Crossing has continued its expansion across Juban Road in the past year, with many big arrivals still to come.

Initially, the Louisiana Sportsman’s Paradise gas station was the only business facing Juban on the east side of the highway.  It has been joined in the past year by Burger King and Starbucks in a lot north of the gas station, and a Taco Bell opened in an open unit inside the gas station’s building.

Construction will be completed in early 2020 for Hobby Lobby, set back from Juban a bit to accommodate parking.  It will replace their current location on O’Neal Lane.  Construction is also underway for two buildings just south of the gas station:  Heartland Dental and Panda Express.

Two more “strips” are in progress as well:  Juban Square will face Juban and be located between the gas station and Starbucks, featuring Lit Pizza on one end and Izzo’s Illegal Burrito on the other.  The tenants in between have not yet been announced.

Juban Marketplace will be parallel to Hobby Lobby, set back from Juban.  Tenants named so far include Dollar Tree, Shoe Station, and Burke’s Outlet.

The original Juban Crossing area on the west side of Juban has had recent construction for a Racetrac gas station, and newer tenants include Five Below and CPR Cell Phone Repair.  Supercuts will be coming soon in the vacancy to the left of Torrid.

Unfortunate recent closing stores news at Juban Crossing:  due to corporate bankruptcies, Dress Barn and Forever 21 are holding going out of business sales.  No announcements have been made yet as to potential future tenants.

This week, Piccadilly announced that it will be returning to Denham Springs, at a new location in the Juban Crossing shopping center. Their previous location closed after the flood and is now home to the second location of Duke’s Seafood.

The new Piccadilly at Juban Crossing is slated to be about half the size of their restaurants in the past, and they will include some healthier meal options, some new items to be rotated through, and the customer favorites that long-time customers have always loved.

Have you ever come across a deal site and you had to ask yourself, do I want to tell people and risk that, with others finding out about it, it might make it harder for me to score deals myself?

No?

Well, you’ll probably feel that way after you read through this post. Hear me out.

A little over ten years ago, these two super-smart and -awesome guys named Brian Wiegand and Mark McGuire created a shopping website called Jellyfish.  (Weird name, but the domain was available!) It got amazing reviews from oh, little folks like The Wall Street Journal. Everybody was talking about them – from US News to The New York Times to Reader’s Digest!

It was a cashback shopping website, and a really good one.

Then the guys came up with this idea for a feature to add to the site: they would put up an unknown quantity of a really cool item for sale, and the price would drop until the item sold out. At the end of their “live game show,” they displayed a leaderboard with all the buyers’ usernames and the percentages at which they bought. You could see who got the best deal, and who jumped too soon.

“Smack Shopping” was what they called it, because a smack is the name for a group of jellyfish. “Smack” also described the member chatroom during the game…all in good fun, of course! Members would talk smack about the featured product, about who bought the item first and got the lowest discount, and about each other. Rather strangely, considering the large number of participants, Jellyfish members formed close friendships through the daily chats that last to this day, 12 years after Jellyfish’s launch!

One awesome day in 2007, they actually did a reverse auction on a new Prius! But on a typical day, you could expect anything from a Nikon DSLR camera to a Waring Pro blender to quirky items like a rubber chicken or a bag of “Hot Nuts.”

Then one day, Microsoft came calling.

They wanted Brian and Mark’s “baby” to rebrand it as Live Search Cashback, and they had no apparent interest in that silly little reverse auction feature of the site. The guys ended up with a huge chunk of Bill Gates’ money (some say $50M). Microsoft put its own unique touch on Jellyfish (to put it delicately), and eventually Live Search Cashback, later called Bing Cashback, fizzled out. (If a tree falls in the woods…call it Bing Cashback because nobody noticed when it keeled over, either.)  Our heroes went on to other ventures, and sadly, Jellyfish’s reverse auction Smack Shopping was a thing of the past.

Until last week.

It turns out that, in the decade since Microsoft’s buyout, Brian and Mark continued to mull over that insanely popular reverse auction and all of the fun shopper interaction, and last year they bought another very oddly named domain: Gravy.com. They designed an app for it, and in Apple’s App Store you can now download their new Gravy – Live Shopping Game app. On March 8th they began anew, with their app-only (currently iOS only), live-hosted, nightly-except-Saturdays, 7:30pm CT reverse auction/game.

What kind of items do they offer? It can be ANYTHING, but you can rest assured, it’s something cool. So far the items they’ve sold included Apple AirPods, Amazon’s Echo Dots, PlayStation Fours, a fingerprint-ID combination style lock, Keurigs, and a DJI Mavic Air drone.

You never know in advance what the product will be or how many will be available to buy. Are they just selling one item tonight? Or are they selling a dozen? Once the game begins, you can see the price dropping and it’s up to you to decide if you want to hit the buy-now button or wait and see if you can get a better deal.

How do I check this thing out? Here ya go:

1. Download the Gravy Live Shopping app. It is only available for iOS right now, and while there isn’t an iPad-specific app for it, iPad users can download the iPhone app and it works like a charm! (They’re working on an Android app. Patience, my ‘droid friends!)

2. Create an account, selecting your username. That’s the name that will show up on the leaderboard if you buy an item, and it’s the name you’ll use if decide to use the chat area during the game. You’ll have an option to receive a text before the game goes live. You should definitely say yes to this so you don’t miss a game!

3. Enter in your payment information. While you don’t have to do this in advance, because time is of the essence when you’re ready to buy, I highly recommend that you go ahead and put your credit card information in ahead of time! I did!

4. Start checking the app around 7:29 if you didn’t sign up for text notifications. When it’s live, you’ll see a button to click to enter the game. It takes a few minutes before they “drop” the item up for sale and the reverse auction begins! Be ready to hit the Buy button when the price is right for you!

P A R T   T W O . . . Guru Guessing!

What’s this thing about leaving a shopping app with more money than when you showed up? This is another feature of Gravy: Guru Guessing.

Every night, for a few seconds after the item is announced — but before the price starts dropping — you’ll have the opportunity to enter your guess at what the biggest discount of the night will be on that item. Remember, the price drops until it sells out, so you want to guess what that final, largest discount will be. The five Guru Guessers who are closest to that percentage, without going over, will win cash. Actual, free cash. $50, $25, $10, $10, and $5 for the top five, respectively, to be exact.

How do you have any idea of what to guess? This is where being an avid deal-hunter may give you a little bit of an edge.

For example with the Amazon Echo Dots: bargain-hunters know these went on sale around the holidays, and Amazon is always doing some kind of promo when you buy 2 or 3 at a time. It makes sense that these weren’t going to sell out at 10% off. Would people let them get below 50% off? My gut said no. I think I guessed something like 45.12%. I was not one of the closest 5 without going over, but I was in the ballpark at least!

You do NOT have to place a Guru Guess. This is just a little side fun. It also makes the chat area a bit more lively as people may try to psych other people into buying when the discount starts to approach their Guru Guess. “I just bought it!” (Did you really, or do you just want me to buy now so your guess will be closest and you’ll win a prize?)

When you create your account, you’ll be presented with a couple of charities you can choose from.

Every night, a portion of the ultimate selling prices of the item up for grabs will be donated to the buyer’s choice of charity (the one you selected when you signed up). The portion donated varies every night, just depending on the product. For the fingerprint-ID lock auction, 100% of the sales prices went to buyers’ choices of charity!

Home Depot has a relatively rare coupon code out for $10 off $100+ orders.  There isn’t a printable coupon version of it to take into the store, BUT it’s good on buy-online, pick up in-store orders if you’d like to pick it up at the Denham Springs Home Depot or any other Home Depot near you!

The code is THDOCTFY1710 and it is a multi-use code, so as long as you place separate orders, you can use it again and again!  The code is good through October 26th.

GameStop is doing a great promo on used video games! I’ve never seen them do this promo and it is outstanding if you don’t mind using or gifting used games. When my kids were younger and into Gamecube and Wii, they never cared if a game was used or not, so I’d give them used games for Christmas and they were just as happy as could be…and so was I, at the price!

GameStop’s website has a promo that says it’s buy 2, get 1 free on preowned games. It’s actually BETTER if you buy 4, and although I didn’t see the wording on this posted on their site, I read about it on a deal forum, and it does come off your total when you add 4 to your cart:

“4 for $20 – All $9.99 Pre-Owned Games – Buy 4 $9.99 games for $20. Offer valid only on pre-owned games priced at $9.99 only. Some exclusions apply. Subject to availability by location… Offer valid 10/2/17 – 10/15/17.”

So this should be available in-store also, but I like being able to take advantage of something like this online, to get the best selection.

They are also doing 4 for $10 on used games priced at $4.99 or less, and 4 for $40 on used games priced $17.99 or less.

I have four $9.99 used games in my cart, and sure enough, my total after discounts is $20, so that’s half off their already cheap used game prices!

If you’re going to shop online, be sure you go through a cashback site like Ebates in order to double-dip and earn 2.5% cashback (and if it’s your first time to use Ebates, they’ll give you $5 for placing your first order with them, too!).  Have a rewards credit card?  Use it to pay for your order and triple-dip!

If you’re a fan of DenhamDeals on Facebook, you may notice that when I post, I usually don’t provide the link to a coupon or promotion within my status updates — instead, I’ll say, “Details in the comments,” “Details below,” or “The link is in the first comment below.”  Wonder why?

Facebook assumes that Pages (like DD) that post a link are really posting an ad.  And they don’t want to give us free “ads” — they want us to pay to have updates with links show up in your newsfeed.

They don’t know or care that the link in my status update is to a printable coupon or a sales ad or some other promotion that you probably WANT to see!  (That’s why you Liked my page, after all, right?)  So this is why I have to include the link in a comment instead of the update itself.

But Facebook isn’t just limiting visibility of my status updates with a link in them.  You see, a while back, I did a little test.

Within a few minutes’ time, I made three status updates on the DenhamDeals Facebook.  Two were updates I wrote myself, with no links inside them.  The third was a status update with a photo that I shared from the Menchies Denham Springs FB.

The results were unbelievable:  the two posts I made on my own, with no links included in them, each had over 800 views.  The Menchie’s status update I shared, made at exactly the same time… got 61 views.  Ah, but I found out why:  I noticed that FB put a Boost Post link underneath the Menchie’s status update that I shared…wanting ME to pay to display Menchie’s status update!  What the heck?!

So I learned a few things from this experiment, and these are my suggested workarounds:

1.  Go to the DenhamDeals.com Facebook page, and next to the Liked button, click the Following button.  Change the IN YOUR NEWS FEED setting to See First.  This will make sure you see my updates in your newsfeed without my having to pay Facebook to display them there.  Most things I share don’t pay me a dime — I’m just trying to help my readers find a deal and save some money.

If you want to be sure you get notified when I post a new deal, even if you’re not watching your newsfeed at the time, change the NOTIFICATIONS to On.  By doing this, the globe icon on your Facebook page that lights up when someone posts or comments on your wall will light up when a new deal has been posted to DenhamDeals’ Facebook.

This takes way longer to explain than to do.  It literally takes five seconds!

2.  The other workaround is for you to sign up for my email newsletter.  It has been on hiatus for a while, but soon I’ll start sending out, once or twice a week, a summary of the best local deals I’ve found recently.  If you’re not on Facebook or Twitter 24/7, this will be a great tool to keep you in-the-know!  While we have over 5,000 Facebook Likes, there are considerably fewer newsletter subscribers, and I’d really like to see that figure jump.

The Livingston Parish News reported this week that the Albertson’s in Denham Springs will be closing in the fall, citing as their source Mayor Gerard Landry.  Their last day will be in September, and management did not give Mayor Landry a reason for their decision, though he suspects it’s due to increasing competition for local grocery business in recent years thanks to the Walmart Neighborhood Market further south on Hwy 16, and Rouses Supermarket at Juban Crossing.

The 60,000 sq ft building previously housed a Winn-Dixie.

Reaction to the news on social media was primarily that of surprise and concern.  Many shoppers mentioned how they would miss Albertson’s sale prices.  Some were worried about having to transfer prescriptions to other pharmacies.  Some shoppers said they would simply drive to Baton Rouge to shop at Albertson’s (the College Drive location is probably closest to the interstate), which obviously isn’t good news in terms of sales tax revenue for Denham Springs, but you can’t fault shoppers for wanting to shop where the prices are lower, factoring in the additional gas money.

My concern is for the impact of this on the local economy.  If shoppers take their business out of the parish, this will impact our tax revenue.  And let’s not forget the store employees who will be out of work just a few months before Christmas.  Hopefully the other area Albertson’s stores will be able to absorb some employees who would be willing to make the drive, but this will still leave many people scrambling to find work.

It would be great if another grocery store were to come in and claim the location (hello, Winn-Dixie?).

The Kohl’s location at Juban Crossing in Denham Springs is permanently closed due to damage from the August 2016 flooding, according to multiple Baton Rouge store representatives.  All associates, executives, and part-timers were offered positions at the Kohl’s Baton Rouge or Covington location.

“It was a total loss” due to the flood, according to a high-level source I spoke with this morning.  She stated that she didn’t have the capacity to make a formal statement, and referred me to Kohl’s Corporate.  I’m awaiting an official statement from Media Liason Lyra O’Brien.

Have a local business? Let me help you promote it for Small Business Saturday, and continuing throughout the holiday season! Everybody knows Black Friday is next week, but it’s followed by another special shopping day that I really believe in, and that’s called Small Business Saturday. The idea is that after the wild rush of shopping at national retailers on Black Friday, shoppers should take a day to just check out what their smaller, local stores have to offer.

As part of the Small Business Saturday promotion, I want to help small businesses by promoting you on a special Shop Local post on my website which would go live the day after Thanksgiving. After Small Biz Saturday, it would be moved to a special Shop Local tab on the top of my site where it will remain through 2015. I will remind my FB and Twitter readers about these local advertisers repeatedly throughout the holiday season, and I will search engine-optimize the post so people looking for local businesses in Livingston Parish would be likely to find it.

The ad would be $25 for text only, or $35 for text plus a photo or coupon. The first business to offer $100 for premium placement at the top of the list would get dibs on it, The next business would be offered second position for $50. Everyone else would be first come, first served.
