Soooo, here’s a compilation of some of the iSnaps I’ve made during that last few months. All of these were shot with my iPhone 4s and edited mostly in VSCOcam, with a few in Snapseed and Hipstamatic. I’m going to try to do this every month, or at least once a quarter. I say that now, but we’ll see how it goes.

Oh, I do <del datetime="2013-10-17T22:10:26+00:00">occasionally</del> rarely post to instagram and my vsco grid:

Sigur Rós..I love this band! They aren’t for everyone but I think those of us who love ’em, love ’em with the same intensity that their music brings. Suffice it to say, I was thrilled when I got this assignment. Photo pit rules for this show only allowed for two songs from either side of the stage. Once I picked a side I was stuck there for the duration. Their songs are longer than most, so two songs was actually a pretty decent amount of shooting time…probably more than the standard three songs. The last couple shots I took from the upper bar area with a point and shoot. I didn’t want to bring out the big guns, since after my time in the pit, the cameras are supposed to stay in the bag if I opt to hang around for the show.

For this post I thought I’d do something different and highlight my outtakes instead of my selected images. These are mostly shots that were either under/over exposed and/or blurred because of a slow shutter speed (and in some cases because my focus was off — it happens ).

Even though they are outtakes, there is still something I like about them…but you know, it’s all subjective. I chose to convert these to black and white because of color variations from being under/over exposed. Once I did the b&w conversion I thought, hey, these might look cool square and heavily vignetted…kind of a holga/toy camera look. Again, purely subjective.

I’ve been working on images for my Seattle archive the last couple weeks. Mid last week, during a facebook break from editing, I saw that Visual Supply Co had put out a new film pack, Film 03 Instant. Currently in my closet I have a polaroid 600, sx-70, fuji instax, instant back for my holga, instant back for my hasselblad. But the last time I used any of those was, wow…probably three to four years ago. When I think about that I get a little sad. Anyway, being extremely fond of instant, I decide to purchase the film pack for lightroom. I’m a big fan of VSCO, I use both Film Packs 1 and 2 for my post-processing these days. I immediately do the install but hadn’t planned on tooling around with the presets until I was finished with my Seattle archive. Well, ha! That thought didn’t last long. One quick little peek and I was in love. Next thing I knew I was creating “instant” virtual copies of several images in my Seattle database. Take a look, what do you think?

The only bad thing about this film pack is that there are soooooo many options, Well, ok, it’s not so much of a bad thing, but it certainly takes the “no post” of traditional instant camera photography completely out of the equation. Here’s a pretty simple, basic photo of a flower taken from raw file to a tiny fraction of the various emulsion looks.

Clockwise from upper left, straight raw, raw adjusted for standard contrast, color; Fuji Fp-3000b HC; Time-Zero Polaroid (Expired) ++, Fuji Fp-100c Negative +, Fuji Fp-3000b Negative ++

Happy Mardi Gras!! I had the pleasure of photographing the first Mardi Gras after Katrina. It was my first and only Mardi Gras so I have nothing to compare it to but, WOW, the people of New Orleans know how to throw a party. It was so fantastic to see people out celebrating in the wake of such a devastating storm. I followed the parade from Uptown into the French Quarter…focusing mostly on characters. Here are a few of my favorite shots.

A few snapshots from our trip to Maine with a few friends last month. Had a blast! We’ve been going every year for the past few years and it’s the only true vacation Cec and I ever seem to take. Usually our trips are centered around family, so when we go to Maine, we truly vacate… our time is spent watching sunrises/sunsets, hanging out at the beach, eating entirely too many delicious lobster rolls, and drinking some fantastic brews.

We had the biennial Chambers family reunion a couple weekends ago in Seattle. I knew I wouldn’t have much time for picture taking so I didn’t want to lug around all my gear but I also didn’t want to just use my iPhone, again. So I figured this would be a good time for me to rent the Fuji X-Pro 1. I am in LOVE with that camera. Along with the body, I rented the 18mm lens, which is equivalent to about 27mm. There are a ton of reviews out there on the Fuji X-Pro 1, so I’m not going to go there except to say that the only issue I have with the camera is the shutter lag. But, even with that issue, I would absolutely recommend this camera. If you’re looking for a review, check out this one, by Preston Utely. Great review and beautiful photos. I love his work.

Most of the shots I took were of my family but here are a few from the weekend that are more in the travel arena.

Oh, one other thing.. the detail this camera and lens capture is pretty fantastic. It’s hard to see it with these smaller images, so I’ve linked the pics to slightly larger versions to give you a better view. Also, for those of you who may want to know, all of these were shot at ISO 400.

This first one is part of my never ending effort to produce the next “most expensive photo in the world.” I don’t know what my obsession is with empty spaces. If anyone out there has any ideas, please share. This was shot at the airport while waiting for the van to the hotel.

Seattle is one of my favorite cities and I’ve mentioned on my blog before that I absolutely love the Olympic Sculpture Park. I could sit in that park all day and be perfectly content. As you can see, the weather during this trip was a little overcast..but after spending some seriously hot days in Colorado, the cool temps and cloudy skies where great. Anyway, one of the things I love about this place is that it was a barren industrial zone remade into a beautiful waterfront park. I also like that the park still has a bit of the industrial feel to it with the concrete hardscapes and the train running through part of the park.

This next shot is a good example of the shutter lag issue. Compositionally, I like this photo for a couple reasons. But the one thing I don’t like is the bike tire intersecting with the sign…which was due to shutter lag. Can I do some photoshop magic, yes…but I prefer to do my very best to capture everything in camera.

These last couple shots were taken during our drive into Lake Union. Yes, I wrote “drive.” If you’ve ever taken a Duck Boat Tour you know what I mean. It’s a land and water tour in an old WWII amphibious landing vehicle. We toured the city streets and then drove right into Lake Union to see a few sites on the water. If you ever plan on doing a duck tour, I highly recommend doing it with a group of people who aren’t afraid to be a little crazy. Most of the boat captains dress up and their schtick is to act a little bit goofy, crackin’ jokes, jammin to music..so if you’re with a group of people who like to get their crazy on every once in a while, chances are you’ll have a real fun time.

My brother-in-law, along with his wife and two kids, came out to Colorado Springs last week for a visit. A quick thanks to them for supporting Colorado Springs Tourism in the midst of the Waldo Canyon Fire. Don’t quote me on this, but I think I read somewhere that the fire was impacting the city and surrounds by some $1M per day in business losses. It’s sad to think of the long term economic effects this brutal wildfire season is going to have on our state. Here in Colorado Springs, we had about a solid week where all of our major attractions were closed. I remember thinking it was a little overkill that ALL of our local parks and hiking spots were closed, even those that weren’t anywhere near the fire. However, having just been up at the overlook in Palmer Park on Saturday, I can see why… cigarette butts all over the place. Idiots!

Anyhoo, when the family decided they would still make the trek out here to visit, Cec and I were thrilled but also worried that everything would still be closed. In fact, when they first arrived everything was still closed with the exception of Seven Falls so they checked that out first. Due the drought, the falls weren’t flowing like they usually would this time of year but it was still enjoyable. It was nice just to be out! Thanks to the tireless work of the firefighters and some cooperative weather, throughout the week the rest of the local parks, along with HWY 24, opened back up. The fam was pretty much able to do all the things they wanted, We hit Garden of the Gods, took the COG up Pikes Peak, spent a day at The North Pole..the kids loved it, the adults not so much, only because our equilibrium isn’t what it used to be..the tilt-a-whirl did a number on my brother-in-law and the umbrellas hit me pretty hard. I remember the days when I could go on rides over and over again, now I can barely handle two minutes. We capped their vacation with a hike through Palmer Park. I think we may have convinced them to move here from Kansas City. I LOVE COLORADO!!

For any of you out there reading this thinking about visiting our beautiful state but having reservations due to our wildfires, please don’t let that hold you back. There is still a ton to do and see. You won’t be disappointed! Also, if you want to help some of those people who have lost their homes or the fabulous firefighters who are out there battling the blazes:

http://www.wildfiretees.com/

Here are some shots from the week. Again, I found myself shooting primarily with my iPhone. This time I edited just about everything with VSCO Cam App and a few with Instagram. There are couple below that I shot with my slr but edited on my iPhone. Can you tell which ones? I’m heading to Seattle in a couple of weeks, I’ve decided to rent the Fuji X-Pro 1…see how I like it.

The goal here was threefold, 1)to show the branding paint scheme, logo, and signage which can bee seen throughout the shop; 2)portrait of Ken Knoche, the manager who brought it all together before the shop opened; 3)shot of the painting area to highlight the fact that the shop use BASF waterborne paint.

The painting area was definitely my favorite. This may sound weird but, I was fascinated by how clean it was. Well, the entire shop was virtually spotless, but the painting bays were pristine. And the sci-fi geek in me loved how the guys looked in their protective gear in that bright white room.
