I had no idea until this exploded that Target has a long history of saying one thing while doing the opposite.

If you’re also long-time Target shopper who supports LGBT equal rights, this is an eye-opener:

Real America: Target Doesn’t Support Gay Equality Because It Never Did (UPDATE: Yes, Target and Prop 8, Maybe) – The Awl

A few disturbing bits (supporting research and facts in the article itself):

The truth is not that Target and its leadership have suddenly turned on their commitment to gay rights. It’s more that it never really existed to begin with. Further research shows that Target has funneled significant funding to the most socially conservative of Republicans and that it boasts a frightening culture of anti-gay candidate support from Target’s own stable of top executives.

Target’s official PAC, and every single one of its executives leaders except one, have given healthily to a PAC that overwhelmingly supports anti-gay candidates, many who do not even represent Minnesota.

The contradictions are at their worst when Target and its executive leadership laud the company’s “Domestic Partner Benefits” while at the same time lopsidedly supporting lawmakers like Pawlenty and Burr, who would deny every gay American such domestic partner benefits as adoption and after-life remains decisions.

many of the candidates Target and its leadership have supported are working hard to block the post-Citizens United Disclosure Act, without which Target’s future political influence will be even more difficult to track.

I’m no longer waiting for my apology as a (now) former Target shopper. (The limp internal apology on company letterhead didn’t cut it.)

It’s not what we say, it’s what we do or don’t do that counts. Let’s not support hate and discrimination with our shopping dollars.

Target’s official PAC, and every single one of its executives leaders except one, have given healthily to a PAC that overwhelmingly supports anti-gay candidates, many who do not even represent Minnesota. So it’s confusing when Target’s CEO speaks of “our commitment to diversity, and more specifically, the GLBT community” while at the same time working to ensure that legislative offices nationwide are stocked with lawmakers who would work hardest to destroy the GLBT community.

I have to admit really sliding on self care by the end of last week and of course feeling stressed and exhausted. There was a huge backlog of emails and work waiting upon return from the holidays, so I kept pushing myself to work just a little bit longer – then a little bit more. Sound familiar?

Friday, January 8 (reading)

Read more of The Happiness Project while falling asleep. Would have been better self care to just turn off the light. Probably defeats the purpose to cram in a few minutes for yourself when too tired to enjoy it.

Saturday, January 9 (clothes shopping)

Desperately needed, so does this still count? Hmm, I’m saying yes. It surely boosted my confidence to have some new things with cheerful pops of color. And that hubby finds sexy

Sunday, January 10 (finish shopping, couch potato time)

Cuddle time with hubby, wine and The Wire on Netflix.

Monday, January 11 (break & stretch)

It’s gonna be a hectic week. Lots of work to cram in today and tomorrow in advance of a business trip the rest of the week. So I’m setting a timer in another room to go off once an hour so I’ll actually get up from the computer, stretch and break for a few minutes.

How did you do last week? What will you do better or more of?

You know those days – start working too early and end too late, wolf down dinner and go straight to class or some other commitment. (Looking sheepish now ’cause I know better.)

My head finally hits the pillow and it occurs to me that I did nothing just for myself that day. So I say to DH, “Crap! I did absolutely nothing for myself today.” I’m feeling guilty for missing my new daily goal.

Then sweet husband and sometimes master of the obvious (especially when I miss it) says to me, “You can… not beat yourself up about it.”

Duh, good idea. I go to sleep.

We’ve all heard that “if you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anyone else.” Yet most of us ignore this bit of wisdom until we smack right into its truth. We’re so busy doing, doing, doing for our families, bosses, businesses and causes that we literally wear ourselves out. Then we wonder why we feel so sick and tired! Women especially (myself included) are prone to putting themselves last.

One of my personal missions this year is to take much better care of myself. So when I received an invite from Stacy Brice to 31 Days of Self Care, I joined right up. The assignment: “Every day for the 31 days in January, do something truly good for yourself. Just for yourself—with no one else in mind except yourself.”

Friday, January 1 – My personal mission statement

It’s a daunting task to take stock of your current way of doing and thinking vs what you really value and enjoy, your talents and gifts, your life purpose and journey. Then to decide on exactly what things you will work on and to outline your goals. The online Mission Statement Builder from Franklin Covey walked me right through the process in a question and answer format. After a couple or so quiet, thoughtful hours, the tool delivered my draft right to my inbox for some finishing touches. Now printed and posted at my desk and a copy in my purse, my personal mission statement is the new measuring stick for everything I do, think and feel. If it’s not in alignment with my mission – it’s outta here!

Saturday, January 2 – Bubble bath with a glass of wine and some magazines (ahhh, so nice!)

Sunday, January 3 – Walk and talk with my honey at White Rock Lake (brrr…but fun)

Monday January 4 – Watched “Men of a Certain Age” with my man of a certain age

They say it takes only 21 days to make a habit – what a great one to start the New Year & New Decade with!
