These are "Donut Peaches" - named after their shape. I bought the peaches and lemons at Ridley Road Market, Dalston - one of London's last authentic outdoor markets. Authentic because it's yet to be infiltrated by food gentrification, e.g. deli olive sellers, "homemade" bread and the like.

I found the wooden boxes on the street in Finsbury Park a few years ago. I've had the spice bottles for years, and refill from loose or cello packs. I am slowly replacing the clear glass bottles with Taylors Mustard bottles (top shelf with the yellow lids), as and when I finish eating the mustard. (Big bottle with yellow lid is a Marmite jar.)

I buy Taylors mustard because I like the taste, but equally importantly, because it is a small company who manufacture in Cheshire. The bottles are brown (so good for spice storage) and the label comes right off with a bit of water. (So none of those industrial glues many big companies use on their products.)

Everything else is either upcycled from food purchses (such as the Lavazza coffee tin and the two green/yellow boxes which housed Japanese tofu) or purchased at second hand shops (the 60s ceramic container and 70s orange tureen which holds onions and garlic).

My soy milk maker is at the left. Fifty quid on eBay and it's saved that much already. Plus no more tetra paks which aren't recyclable. And the family who own tetra pak include the dissolute Mayfair heir who's a heroin addict and his wife who was arrested in 2008 for trying to smuggle crack into the American Embassy in London. I have NO interest in supporting rich crack heads and neither should you. Avoid tetra paks where possible. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-558569/Drugs-billionaire...

I used these tomatoes to make salsa. These are my "rules" for food buying:

1. buy in season
2. buy loose (i.e no packaging which eliminates the big chains like Sainsburys)
3. always use my own cloth bag

I bought these tomatoes at TFC - Turkish Food Centre. Four big ripe tomatoes for £1.76.

If possible I will check food provenance (i.e. food miles), but if the choice is between loose tomoatoes from Turkey or packaged from UK, I'll opt for the former because it means less rubbish for me to put out for collection. The time will come - soon I hope - when UK councils will charge households by weight for rubbish collection. I'll be ready.

Tofu in Achiote marinade. I bought the Achiote paste in Mexico City (just about the only food item not confiscated when I changed planes in Madrid), and altered a recipe from 101cookbooks.com "Lemon Achiote Grilled Tofu". I substituted Agave syrup for sugar and used a combo of fresh lemon and lime juice. You could also use naranjas - oranges - instead.

Most importantly, I followed the advice of someone who posted a comment on 101cookbooks - freeze the tofu solid. Thaw and squeeze out water before soaking in the marinade. This method creates a very solid tofu perfect for grilling.

While others had their meaty BBQ, this was my 4th of July meal - grilled Achiote tofu on toasted ciabatta, home made dill and carrot coleslaw (soy yoghurt as binder), and home made coriander puy lentil tomato salsa.

Food heaven!

In response to an op-ed piece by one of my favourite columnists, Christopher Caldwell. Four years ago I read a piece about a woman in Argentina who was surviving her country's economic collapse by making jewellry from rubbish. I knew then that what was happening to her in Argentina, could (and probably would) happen to us in the UK and US. And it has. Which is why I'm busy creating alternative sustainable strategies for my business. Oh and refining my techniques in handmade objects!

One of a series of random shots from my office studio space. Unedited and unstyled.

1960s red expanding book holder; 1940s Winfield pottery cup and saucer made in Pasadena, California, bias tape I made from vintage fabric awaiting transformation into cushion piping; badge from the Australia pavilion at the 2008 Architecture Biennale, Venice; Funk in the Trunk lip gloss; glass bracelet. All sitting atop a vintage multi-coloured file cabinet where I store my shoes.

In excellent condition although it's missing the shoulder strap that clips onto the brass rings at the base of the handle. Mark Cross used to have stores across America (I remember visiting the Ala Moana Shopping Centre store (Oahu, Hawaii) with my parents. Mark Cross ceased trading in the 1990s (I think). The brand was famously name checked by Grace Kelly in Hitchcock's movie "Rear Window", when she opens her Mark Cross overnight handbag in front of James Stewart.
