Congress Gives War New Beginning

This from Dennis Kucinich. He spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday criticizing the non binding resoultion which will not bring an end to the war.

Congress preparing 'to give the war a new beginning'

Regardless of the debate over non-binding Congressional resolutions disapproving of the President's plan to escalate the war in Iraq,"Congress is ironically preparing to give the war a new beginning,"Congressman Dennis Kucinich said yesterday on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

"The war is binding,” Kucinich said. “The resolution is not.

“This resolution will not end the war. It will not bring our beloved troops home. It will not even stop the Administration from sending more troops.”

To the contrary, Kucinich said, some members of Congress “have made it clear long before this particular resolution that they will continue to vote to fund the war by approving the upcoming supplemental appropriation, even though money exists to bring the troops home now.

“Each and every time Congress votes to fund the war, it votes to reauthorize the war,” the Congressman argued. “Funding the war is approval of the war.”

"When we equate funding the war with supporting the troops we are dooming thousands of young Americans who are valiantly following the orders of their Commander in Chief. If we truly cared about the troops, we would not leave them in the middle of a civil war. If we truly cared about the troops, we would not leave them in a conflict for which there is no military solution.”

Dennis Kucinich will be holding a "town hall meeting" today in Dover, New Hampshire.

The event will be held at the Dover Public Library at 1.30pm and is open to all.

Deniss Kucinich spoke today at the Democratic National Committee Winter Meeting. As was expected, the majority of the speech was taken up by the war in Iraq.

Kucinich has been against the war from the start. He has again called on Congress to stop the war.

Dennis Kucinich Speech:

I grew up in the city of Cleveland, the oldest of seven children. My parents never owned a home. We were renters, we kept moving, with each new arrival to our family. We lived in 21 different places, including a couple of cars. I know first hand what happens when someone in the family lacks adequate health care, or daycare or doesn’t have the money for college or can’t afford to pay the utility bills.

I remember where I came from. My priority as President will be to create economic opportunities and prosperity, to rebuild America’s cities, to repair America’s neighborhoods, to restore America’s industry, to renew America’s schools, to reclaim America’s health. I will ask our Democratic Congress to pass a single-payer not for profit health care plan, Medicare for All, a Universal Pre-Kindergarten bill, a Rebuild America’s Infrastructure bill, and legislation to create a cabinet-level Department of Peace and Non-Violence, which takes Dr. King’s dream and makes it an everyday reality.

Of all the candidates for President, I not only voted against the authorization but I have consistently voted against funding the war and I have a 12-point plan devised with the help of international peacekeepers, to bring our troops home and to end the war.

Of all the decisions a President must make, the most far reaching is whether to commit the lives of our young men and women to combat. I believe that I have demonstrated the clarity and foresight people have a right to expect of a President. This war would have never occurred in the first place if I had been President. But we do not have to wait for 2009 and my Inauguration as President to end it.

White House Up To Old Tricks - Kucinich

Dennis Kucinich has said that the White House is up to its old tricks again by commencing a media campaign to prepare the public for an eventual attack on Iran.

Kucicnich said that the White House is "providing information by anonymous sources and portraying Iran as an aggressor in Iraq. The President is mischaracterizing U.S. action vis à vis Iran. In fact, the U.S. is already engaged in offensive and provocative acts against Iran."

Kucinich said that President Bush continues to be preparing for a war against Iran without consulting with the Congress. He is therefore putting himself at risk of an impeachment proceeding.

Kucinich Supports Universal Health Coverage

Dennis Kucinich has co-sponsored a bill in Congress which will be the only bill "...that would assure universal health-care coverage."

If enacted, the bill would provide coverage for procedures such as dental care, mental health care and prescription drugs.

The plan would be funded by a progressive payroll tax.

New Role for Kucinch

Dennis Kucinich has been appointed the Chairman of the newly created Domestic Policy Subcommittee of Government Oversight.

The following is from Kucinich's statement:

"This week Rep. Henry Waxman Chairman of the Committee on Government Oversight of the United States House of Representatives, with the approval of members of the full committee, created a new subcommittee, one with the broadest oversight authority of any subcommittee in the federal government, with jurisdiction over all Domestic Policy in the United States. With the support of all 23 democrats on the committee, I have been selected to be the Chairman."

Kucinich Responds to Bush on Iraq

Dennis Kucinich issued a scathing response to the new plan for Iraq laid out by President Bush last week.

Calling the Bush Plan a strategy for a wider war in the region, Kucinich has said that the media should expose the real reason for the escalation.

Kucinich is suggesting that the real plan by the Bush Administration is to use any extra resources granted by Congress to make an attack on Iran.

Like other leading Democrats like Edwards and Obama, and Republican Chuck Hagel, Kucinich is calling for diplomacy to solve the problems in Iraq. He has also called for further talks with Syria and Iran to help secure peace in the region.

Kucinich Receives 1000 Troop Petition

Dennis Kucinich has received a petition from 1000 active troops who are using an appeal for redress to call for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

The petition reads:

'As a patriotic American proud to serve the nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in congress to support the prompt withdrawal of all American military forces and bases from Iraq. Staying in Iraq will not work and is not worth the price. It is time for the US troops to come home.'

Dennis Kucinich, an opponent of the war in Iraq from the beginning, commended those who signed the petition and reiterated his call for the troops to be brought home.

"It is important to remember that many of these soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines have seen combat in Iraq. They did not refuse to serve. They did not challenge any of their commanders orders, but they do have rights under the constitution and within the military code to present their grievances to the US Congress."

"We should pay careful attention to these brave men and women and I am determined that we should continue to support our troops by bringing them home."

Kucinich for President?

Dennis Kucinich, Representative from Ohio, declared in December 2006 that he would seek the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.

Having been unsuccessful in his attempt to secure the Democratic Nomination in 2004, Dennis Kucinich will again make his stand for a new style of Democratic nominee. While his chances seem to be slim, Kucinich is a fighter, is standing on a strong platform and will almost certainly be in this race for the long haul.

Kucinich is considered to be extremely liberal, and has been a staunch opponent of the Iraq war from the beginning.

Dennis Kucinich is no stranger to public representation. He was a councillor and Mayor of Cleveland, and has been a Member of Congress since 1997.

As a candidate for the 2004 nomination, Kucinich was in it right until before the Convention, pulling out to support Kerry. In that race, he also had the support of many celebrities, who identified with his progressive policies.

This race will probably be even tougher than 2004 for Kucinich. In 2004, Kucinich struggled in most states to get over single digit figures. At that stage, Kucinich was one of the few genuine progressives in the race, and he appealed to certain sections of the Democratic Party.

This time around, much of the moderate vote could head to others, like Barack Obama or John Edwards. But Kucinich is consistent, he believes what he says, and he is passionate.

The breath of fresh air that could describe Kucinich is why he does appeal to many in the Democratic Party. And one of the true benefits of the Kucinich campaign this time around is that he will have a great opportunity to help set the agenda of the race.
