Enable virtual memory on your iPad/iPhone

This hack will enable virtual memory (actually the swap file, virtual memory is always running) on the iPad and iPhone (jailbroken of course).

Coupled with Backgrounder (especially with iOS 4, more on that later), your iDevice will fly.

Note: I’ve only tested this in a 3.2 iPad, and 4.0GM iPhone 3GS, but should work on all versions. Also, credit goes to bahamutspirit at the Multi-Touch Fans forum, I just confirmed that it works for the iPhone 3GS (let me know if it works on other devices).

Let’s begin:

Using iFile (or your favorite SFTP/SSH client of choice), navigate to ‘/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/’, then create a new file and name it ‘com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist’, set the ‘owner’ as ‘root’ and the ‘group’ as ‘wheel’, the rest leave them at default.
Copy the lines below into the file we just created, save and continue.

Now, navigate to “/Library/Preferences/” or “/private/var/preferences/” and create a file named “com.apple.virtualMemory.plist” with he same properties as the previous file.
Copy and paste this into the new file, then save it:

Reboot/restart your iDevice, and you are good to go.

If you want to confirm that the mod is working, go to ‘/private/var/vm/’ on your iDevice and check for a file labeled ‘pagefile0’.
