Step #1 Have a Routine 

Have a morning routine with your team. Many offices have morning huddles that are super beneficial to jumpstart the day. Each day you can go over the goal list to keep the whole team on track! Make a list at the beginning of each month and write down your practice goals. Create the schedule based on your plans to fill in the task schedule. Having an organized schedule will help cut down on wasted time. Then work on prioritizing what order these tasks need to happen to help get them into proper order. Having set policies to help create team accountability and consistency is excellent for a more productive schedule. 

Use your practice management software to your advantage and begin color coding your schedule to see the areas in your schedule which are filled or open.

Step #2 Track Your Time – Training 

Understanding how long tasks take to complete is essential to how you can book your schedule. Tracking your time will help you and your team better understand how to optimize time when doing treatments. Ensuring everyone feels comfortable with the task at hand having the proper training to do the job correctly is essential to workflow. Also, when there is downtime, be sure to have another set of office tasks set in place to keep your office space clean and organized. 

Having proper training and understanding procedures will help save time when all team members understand their tasks. A well-trained team maximizes productivity, and team morale will boost having more confidence in the job position.

Step #3 Have Systems in place

Dental offices thrive and succeed when they have a system in place for efficient and effective communication. Having the proper plan in place for communication helps maintain your quality and standards of service! There are many great communication tools for planning workflow and messaging between operatory rooms.  Helping keep workflow on track and for tasks to be completed promptly. More goals can be met by having a plan in place. No one should feel overwhelmed or stressed by the end of the workday. Dentists can be proud and happy that the practice is growing and the team is happy! Setting up time management will overall help you achieve your goals.

A: Time and Money

 Adopting the right amount of digital x-ray sensors into your practice will help you save time and money. Having one size two sensor with a full schedule of x-rays causes slow down. Many dental offices only use one size two and size one sensor, and unfortunately, when you run a busy practice, just having one size two sensor can become risky. You use your x-ray sensor every day in your practice, which makes your sensor and the cable very vulnerable to daily wear and tear. Be sure to always think ahead about how even being down a sensor for a few days may cost you thousands of dollars. Prepare for the unexpected, or when your current sensor stops working, it is wise to have a backup, so you do not have to stop and reschedule patients.

When you look at your x-ray schedule, do you and your team feel prepared? 

Means does your hygiene team. Members usually have to wait for a sensor to be available to use. In turn, it holds up workflow and a loss of productivity working with a patient. There is lost time if you’re running at least a 4-5 operatories practice and sharing one sensor between all operatories. Sodium Dental is always happy to be able to help be apart of such incredible events! It is great to see this event is still being continued, and we want to shout out how fantastic an event they continue to put on year after year in their clinic!

 There are several ways to store digital x-ray sensors. To protect and extend the life of your digital x-ray sensor, you must properly store your sensors. Most commonly, many offices make the mistake of hanging their sensors from the sensor head and letting the cord hang down the wall. When storing your dental sensor, you want to make sure that it is not stored with other objects. Also, make sure not to be pulling on the cable. You have to be careful when handling and storing your dental sensors. 

Proper Storage 

Making sure your dental sensor is properly used and cared for is critical to the life of your sensors. Following these steps will help extend the life of your dental sensors. All dental sensor brands vary on how long they will last. Many brands claim 1-3 years with daily use. Our Aurora sensor will last five years, and our refurbished sensors should last anywhere between 1-2 years. We suggest not using sensor holders that are placed on the wall and have sensor cords dangling. We also do not suggest open angled bins on the wall. These types of holders put the sensor cable at risk, and having the sensor cable exposed is not a good idea. Also, the cable could be coiled or crimped too tightly with these kinds of holders pictured below. 

Cable care 

The cable is usually the first thing to fail on a dental sensor. The best way to avoid this type of damage is proper technique and storage. You want to ensure your patients are not biting hard onto the sensor or sensor cable. Using proper ring and bar-style holders greatly help extend the life of the sensor. Ring and bar-style sensor holders allow for proper placement of the x-ray sensor while the bite block of the sensor holder prevents patients from biting on the sensor cable.  Asking them to close their mouth slowly is very helpful. Saying the word “bite” usually implies your patient will close their mouth with force, which is not good for the sensor cable. As for storing your dental sensor, make sure there are no kinks or bends in the cable. Also, make sure you are not pulling on the cable. This includes unplugging the sensor from the USB hub and removing from the sensor holder/barrier shields. Following these techniques will help extend the cable life of your dental sensor.

In this video, I will go over what you should be looking for before buying a digital x-ray sensor. Many dentists do not even know where to start, and the pricing can be a bit intimidating.  It is no secret that dental technology can add up quickly. Often, when dentists look for digital technology, they might only consider the product’s price range. We understand price matters, but here are the other key factors to consider when buying a digital x-ray sensor.  

Number one is image quality. 

If you look at all the top companies, they all produce great diagnostic quality x-rays. Sure, some may even claim they have better clarity and have sharper images. Yet sometimes, you may not be able to tell the difference. 

The real question we care about is: can I see caries? Can I see decay or pathology clearly on the x-rays? 

A crucial factor affecting image quality is imaging software. 

Second, let’s talk about Imaging software

You need to make sure how the sensor and the imaging software will integrate with the practice management software you have in your office. Most top name manufacturers will integrate with most of the big practice management software applications on the market. 

When you purchase a new sensor, the company usually will help provide you with installation and support to make sure the sensor works with everything you have.  

Tip: To ensure the sensor will be a good fit for your practice, we recommend doing a sensor demo to make sure the sensor works with the imaging software you have. Have your assistant take a few test images to ensure the sensor will work with the software you have in your practice. 

Sizes of sensor

Most manufacturers make size 0, 1, and 2 sensors. 

• Size 2 sensor is the adult sensor
• Size 1 for children 
• The size 0 is for younger kids ages 8 and below 

Many dental offices will need a size 2 sensor, and whether or not you plan on seeing a lot of children will determine if you need a size 0 sensor. If you’re a pediatric office, you will need a size 0 sensor and possibly a size 1.
