Olin administrator builds Lego Needham Town Hall

It turns out that two Town Halls were built in Needham this year. One was the brick-and-mortar building sitting in Needham Center, which underwent renovations and additions and will be officially unveiled at a Needham300 event on Nov. 5.

The other Town Hall is made of Legos.

Nick Tatar, Assistant Dean of Student Life at Olin College, built this second Town Hall at Olin over the course of three months, starting in January. Working with Olin professor Brad Minch and seven children and Olin students, Tatar built the Town Hall out of fifteen thousand Lego pieces, sometimes working 10 to 15 hours a week on the project. On Nov. 5, Tatar will break the Town Hall into chunks and transport it to the other Town Hall. At noon, he will reassemble it, then step back and let people admire his handiwork. Tatar said that he decided to build this Lego Town Hall for kids to enjoy during the Nov. 5 Needham 300 gala.

“I wanted to see if we could do something fun for the kids, to make the day more playful,” he said.

One Legoland Gripe: ‘It Costs Too Much'

During its first week of existence, Legoland Florida has gathered mostly positive, and in many cases rapturous, reviews from guests and industry experts.

An undercurrent of grumbling has emerged that can be summed up in two words: too expensive. Terra Gouge of Lake Wales said she and her husband, Eric Gouge, probably won't be taking their children, ages 3 and 4, to Legoland because of the cost. "It's not like we don't want to try it; it's just the money," said Gouge, 40.

Lego bricks used to make Segway of sorts

We do know that those with a vivid imagination are able to construct some interesting stuff using nothing but Lego bricks, and there has been some pretty special creations conjured in the past.

Well, humans being humans with our creativity, there are always better things to come in the future – case in point, Lego bricks being used to create a ‘Segway” of sorts.

This is not something that will be able to ferry humans around, but it is still enough to keep children and curious adults alike mesmerized. Also known as the dIMU (Dexter Industries Inertial Motion Unit) Inertial Motion Sensor, the creation of this device will obviously require the presence of an accelerometer as well as a gyroscope, working in tandem with the Lego Mindstorms NXT.

Fully capable of measuring acceleration, tilt, and rotation on all 3 axes, this allows you to construct Lego robots that are able to balance itself on a couple of wheels, measure the rate of acceleration and have an idea on which way is up so that it will not topple over.

Seperation of Christmas and Thomas the Tank Engine?

An excerpt from a newspaper story explains frustrations from the family of the author of the "Thomas the Tank Engine" books over recent decisions to replace "Christmas" with "Holidays" in some of the popular steam engine's forthcoming content:

"A move by television producers to scrap any reference to Christmas in the latest episodes of Thomas the Tank Engine has upset relatives of the man who created the hugely popular children's character.

The TV studio has rebranded "Christmas" as "holidays" for "politically correct" reasons, British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported.

Reverend W Awdry, author of the original tales about the little blue engine, would be distressed about the omission of the significant religious event, said his daughter Hilary Fortnam.

"He would feel very strongly about this politically correct age and that those who now write his stories should not have taken the Christ of the Christmas. Political correctness against Christian beliefs offends," Ms Fortnam said.

Rev Awdry, who worked as a vicar for almost 30 years, considered himself a priest first and a children's author second, said his daughter.

"The television programs say they are based on the books of Rev W Awdry and I don't want people thinking a vicar would write that," Ms Fortnam said." The full story can be read here:

Problems with Department 56 animated halloween pieces

It was early October this year and we were starting to unpack our halloween village pieces.

Our favorite pieces have always been the animated amusement park pieces from the Original Snow Village halloween series.

One by one, we looked at each piece and realized why we didn't use them last year. All of the animated functions had stopped working.

The Scaredy Cat Ferris Wheel had stopped spinning. The swinging ghoulies were pretty, well, dead.

The pumpkin teacups were not revolving. The witch's turntable did not turn.

Must be a common cause for similar malfunction, correct?

We're very dissapointed. We spent about $80 each, and if we brought these pieces to an electric utility repair shop, we'd most likely be paying for them all over again.

Does anyone else have any suggestions on these?

My family and I are big fans of all things railroad, from Thomas and Friends, to GeoTrax, to the Dinosaur Train.

When we recently heard about Department56's railroad-themed halloween pieces, we were excited to check them out.

The Clock Towers of Department 56 2011

In making my selections for my favorite introductions of 2011, I noticed each series unveiled a new clock tower. My son, almost three, is currently fascinated by clocks and has inspired me to perhaps make a vignette of all of the clock towers.

The towers are on the less expensive side, so it may work out. Each is around $35. Now I simply need to come up with some ideas for the landscape.

Obscure D56 building from "A Christmas Story"

Recently on the Yahoo! Department 56 discussion group, they asked about some of the buildings from "A Christmas Story": The Joke Shop, The Firehouse, The Police Station, Pulaski's Candy Shop, The Optometry, etc. -- where did they appear in the movie or book?

I reached out to the current owner of the "A Christmas Story" licensing rights, Brian Jones, who offered some insight:

"The movie being 94 minutes long not all aspects of Ralphie's home town were shown. So Dept 56 took some creative license with buildings: the police and firemen that helped flick would have had to come from their stations. Ralphie directly mentions Pulaski's Candy store as the place Flick saw some grizzly bears. And to get the fake teeth for the joke on Miss Shield they might have bought them at the joke shop along with the rose that squirts that Flick or Schwartz was going to get their old man.

Pulaski's did actually appear in the sequel..."

The sequel was actually titled "My Summer Story" (book was titled "It runs in the family".

Taking a trip to the island of Sodor

Can you believe there is an entire mythology and history to Sodor?

"The need for consistency in the locations for The Railway Series necessitated the creation of a suitable location. The Rev. Awdry required a setting for his books that would be within Great Britain,Rule[›] but would be sufficiently isolated from the rest of British Railways to allow him to do as he wished with the location.

Inspiration came on a visit to the Diocese of Sodor and Man[1] in 1950. Awdry noted that while there was an Isle of Man, there was no similar Island of Sodor. A large island would meet the criteria he required, giving him the isolation from changes to the British railway system while giving him somewhere that people could believe in.

Between them, Awdry and his brother George worked out Sodor's history, geography, industry and language ("Sudric"). Inspiration came from various sources. Dryaw was an anagram of Awdry.

Elsbridge was named after Wilbert's parish of Elsworth. Some place names were Sudric equivalents of those in the real world (for instance, Skarloey was the Sudric version of the Welsh Talyllyn). By the time they had finished, they knew more about Sodor than would ever be used in the actual Railway Series stories.

This year's Yankee Candle trip

By this year, I mean 2010....way back on November 21, to be exact.\

Our annual trip to the Yankee Candle flagship store is always one of our most fun outings of the year.

For 10+ years running, my friends and I have trekked our families up north on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

We typically stop in Northampton for Starbucks and some shopping.

This year was the fourth with kids, and it takes on an entirely new meaning.

To see the kids' faces as each new room at the Candle is unveiled is precious. Especially the D56 display room. What a good way to introduce villages to our kids.

The flagship store has gotten very commercial in other areas, from the lame imitation Build-A-Bear workshop to the home & garden shop...but I swear, the Yankee Candle Santa is the most authentic...I mean he's the real deal.

We always end the trip at Bub's BBQ, which looks like a dive, but offers up a magical chicken noodle soup, great barbecue, and some very good fountain soda with the right combo of carbonation and syrup. Highly recommended.

The picture to the right is of the Northampton Starbucks, and my first purchase of a coffee made from a Clover machine.

Clover was a small company purchased by the Seattle coffee giant. They produced these wonderful machines which automated the extraction of coffee from fresh ground beans in a manner similar to a french press. It was very good, but I'm not sure it was worth over a $1.00 more than a standard Gold Coast fresh brew.

Time shifting the holiday season

This was a post I had begun late Thanksgiving evening, after the Tryptophan had kicked in, after the football had been played out.

Often before the bird is even sliced, people are charting out a course of action for tackling Black Friday doorbuster deals and Cyber Monday online steals.

While half of the family is toiling in the kitchen cleaning up the pots and pans used in preparing the Turkey and all of its' accessories, the other half of the family may have made its' way outside to begin hoisting lights up on the house.

We made it a point to begin placing our village pieces out early, to really enjoy them for the entire Thanksgiving to Christmas holiday.

Little did we now our boy would be sick for 10 days with some cough and stomach bug.

Needless to say, our plan would come off course for a few days.

We ended up getting the tree decorated by the week before Christmas (we displayed a half-decorated tree for our Tree Trimming party on Dec. 5th!) and we created two small vignettes:

"A Christmas Story" was placed horizontally across our mantle, while our various remaining Dickens Village was laid out on a dining room decorative table.

Guess what - it's January 23rd, and it's all still up! We've simply time shifted our Thanksgiving to Christmas holiday season, probably until just before the Super Bowl.

...and this is one of them.

The Department 56 blog was created when I was at the height of my affection for the product line. I was collecting the Original Snow Village, the Original Snow Village Halloween, Dickens' Village and the "A Christmas Story" line from Sears.
A few years ago D56 was purchased by Enesco. Dealers were complaining about a change in the way they were being treated.

Financial struggles forced us to purge our pieces, except for Halloween and A Christmas Story.

I lost interest, barely paying attention to new product introductions. I saw dealers closing up shop. Two of my favorite dealers stopped carrying new merchandise.

I also happened to become a father -- a blessing which I gladly reallocated time for. Less blogging, more diapers.

Now I find myself interested in some other collectibles: Lego, Thomas & Friends, Comic Book stuff, things which he and I share a passion for now.

My son is now 2 years and 8 months, and as train tracks lay across my house, I realized what I should blog about are the things we enjoy. The blog will become a time capsule for him.

Now, I am going to work on getting him to really enjoy the North Pole Series...Rubber Duck Factory, anyone?

Lego's secrets for customer service

I ran across a great article recently which spoke to Lego's customer service secrets.

Here's an excerpt:

"I visited a LEGO store opening in Austin, TX last weekend. It was a family affair, as my mom, wife, two sons, brother, sister-in-law, and their three sons were all in attendance. The line to enter the store stretched for several hundred feet and some people waited up to an hour to get in. Whatever marketing they had done for the grand opening worked famously.

As part of the promotion, LEGO also set up an area on the floor below to build an 8-foot tall Buzz Lightyear model. They assembled an area where kids could build blocks of Legos that would later be used in the construction of the Toy Story character. Once the blocks had been put together, the kids could turn in their work to receive a certificate of achievement for helping. This, of course, was a big deal to the kids. You couldn’t leave without getting a certificate. My 2-1/2 year old son made me acutely aware of this."

There have been some amazing things built with Legos, and I'm not talking exclusively about the in-store displays like the fireman at Toys R Us, although he's pretty cool as well.

Ever been to Santa's Land in Putney, Vermont?

We were thinking of taking our son to visit Santa's Land USA and Spray Foam House in Putney, Vermont.

It's one of those places where I think I may have gone as a child, but I have no conclusive evidence or specific memories....

From an article describing Santa's Land:
"You won't find a brochure for it easily in Vermont (you might instead see flyers for Santa's North Pole in NY or Santa's Village in NH). The official Vermont Attractions Map does not list it. It has no billboards. Even the publicity material for Santa's Land USA's home town, Putney, VT -- which carries glowing descriptions of local businesses like Basketville and the Putney Food Co-op -- fails to mention Santa's Land USA. The only reason we even knew about this place is that one of us visited it in 1985.

There must be some sort of elvin magic at work. The entire attraction, which covers many acres of pine-shaded woods, appears to be run by five people: the kindly lady in the gift shop, the guy who sprints between the Sweet Shoppe and Candy Cane Cupboard, the train engineer, the kiddie ride attendant, and Santa. And this is on a summer weekend.

Mysteries abound. The first thing that catches our eye when we enter the park through the fairyland cottage gift shop is a huge blob of discolored white stuff lying near a little pond. What is it? Fake iceberg? A wad of funnel cake that fell out of Valhalla? Only Santa knows.

The goats in the Santa's Petting Zoo are friendly, and the Sweetheart covered bridge is in good repair. The lights are out in the Elves' Home. And the TV in the kid's video theater in Santa's Arcade shows nothing but electric snow (but perhaps the tape has just ended). There's a Nativity Scene of statues, displays of elf dummies at work, a Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer statue photo op."

Also: it's open all year round! I'll report more after we actually go, although with all the holiday events scheduled, we may not make it until 2012.

Rockefeller Christmas Tree Delivered Today

Today saw the annual unveiling of the massive tree for New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Christmas Tree. The tree was cut down from a Putnam, NY, residence.

From the article:

"Christmas might not be here quite yet — hey, it was an unseasonably warm, very un-wintery day in New York — but the city’s most iconic Christmas tree made its debut Friday, when workers hefted a 74-foot-tall Norway spruce into place at Rockefeller Center in Midtown.

The official tree-lighting ceremony is planned for Nov. 30.

My wife and I plan to visit the city - along with our 2.5 year old, to partake in some festive holiday window sightings. I think we're going to head out there December 10.

Thomas the tank engine takes over the world

Image via WikipediaOur two year (and 2 months!) old has officially fallen in love with everything Thomas. From the moment my wife picked up a cheap Thomas and Friends DVD at Target, which he watched, mesmerized, he has evolved his love of trains to where his GeoTrax and Lego train sets are no longer sufficient.

Now, his trains must be wooden, be propped up on a table, and the trains must be able to be manually pushed along.

It does seem like a step backwards, after all, the GeoTrax ran on their own, as did the Lego set.

The Thomas videos were a bit creepy at first, where the trains were speaking but their mouths were not moving. Yes, they were narrated (George Carlin and Ringo Starr, nonetheless!) but it just wasn't quite right.

They've since fixed this oversight and the newer films offer a true mouth-moving experience -- much more realistic.

Now, to find the Sight and Sounds Deluxe set somewhere...

On this Fourth of July, 2010 morning, I drove around my new small town of Wethersfield, CT (claims to be the first settled town in Connecticut, despite a longstanding argument by Windsor).

I saw many people out cleaning their yards, setting up flags, preparing for barbecues, smiling and ready for a patriotic Sunday.

Joining the social media trend which has become very popular for retailers and manufacturers alike, Department 56 has added a Facebook page.

There is no indication as to whether or not this is the official page offered up by Enesco or not. The official company website does not show any Facebook or Twitter presence.

This would be a great way for the company to reconnect with both collectors and dealers who it may have lost touch with.

Roan Picks A Pumpkin

Roan Picks A Pumpkin, Chapter One

"Noooooooooooooo!" screamed Roan at the very top of his two-year old lungs.

Azzy, the eldery female kitty, did a double take, as this was a very rude interruption of her morning breakfast.

Cano, the fiesty young male kitty, rose to an alert and scrambled to make his way to Roan's side, ready to assume any challenge put forth.

Roan stomped to the door but he was too late. Daddy had already left for work.

"Nooooooooooooo!" he yelled again, this time in his Mommy's sleepy ear.

"Roan, Daddy will be back tonight. Today is Friday, which means we have him for the entire weekend. An extra day with Daddy!"

Roan's smile cautiously returned.

"And tonight is a special night," Mommy continued.

"Tonight we pick a pumpkin from the patch!"

Roan looked up at Mommy, still not quite in command of his words. "Pump-In?"

"Yes, dear, we'll pick the perfect pumpkin. We'll then decorate it for halloween and display it so all the neighbors can see it's your pumpkin."

The kitties stared at each other, wondering what this meant.

Will this pumpkin require water from our water bowls? Food from our food bowls? Heavens forbid, will this pumpkin need to share our potty?

They meandered back to their eating areas to stockpile some additional food for later, just in case.

They snuck past Grimsley Manor and retreated behind the Rickety Rail Station. When the Scaredy Cat Ferris Wheel turned on and spun it's eerie wheel, and began playing its' creeky noises, the kitties were definitely spooked and sped hastily under a bed.

Roan, prone to playing chase with Cano, stuck his head under the bed.

Cano then whispered something in the special kitty-to-child language which can only be muttered by kitties and understood by kids.

"Roan, I'm warning you now. They had a pumpkin last year, too. You know what happened to it?" Cano asked.

Roan listened intently.

"They carved it up, removed its' seeds and then baked them in the oven!"

Roan shrieked and stood there stunned.

Not this year, he thought. This year, I'm going to protect the pumpkin!"
