Lecture Patricia Hayes: Photography, city and landscape in africa. Friday 9 march 2012, 11u30 – 13u00, Aud C (introduction: Johan Lagae).

Patricia Hayes is professor of History at the University of Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town, South Africa. At UWC she runs the Visual History Project, part of which involves researching southern African documentary photography. She co-authored the seminal book The Colonising Camera: photographs in the making of Namibian history in 1998. Together with photographer John Liebenberg she recently compiled a book on Liebenberg’s photographs of the border war in Namibia, entitled Bush of Ghosts. Life and War in Namibia 1986-1990.

In her lecture, Patricia Hayes will focus on the work of two African photographers. The first, Ricardo Rangel is sometimes defined as the “living visual memory of the pre-independence years of Mozambique”. As a politically committed artist, Rangel documented everyday life under Portuguese colonial rule, with some of his documentary photographs providing unexpected glimpses of Maputo’s urban society. The second photographer, Santu Mofokeng is reknowned for his landscape photography, in which he goes beyond a mere political or social commentary and ventures into more spiritual meditations.

The real program of the building, however, was a symbolic one: a setting for the canto’sof Dante’s Divina Commedia, while putting emphasis on what Dante represented in the politics of the day: Italian unification and imperial pretentions.

Although some critics have desperately tried to bring Terragni’s work back within the reassuring fold of the Modern Movement, it has always disrupted the conventional norms of the relationship between the modern and the classical. The Danteum in particular remains a building outside of and beyond time.

Nevertheless, the lecture will try to anchor the project in its time, and discover its exceptional and intimate interactions between literature, architecture and politics.

Dirk De Meyer is a professor in History of Architecture and Architectural Design at Ghent University. With his students, he has built a large scale model of the Danteum that is currently on show at Perennial.
He has formerly been a Visiting Scholar and Chief Curator at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montréal. He is the author ofbooks on a.o.Johann Santini Aicheland on Piranesi, and contributed to books published by the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (München), Electa (Milano) and the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (Paris). He published in journals such as the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, theJournal of Architecture, Casabella, Disegno d’Architettura and SanRocco. He has curated international exhibitions in Belgium, Prague and Montréal, on aspects of Baroque architecture in Italy and Central Europe, and on Piranesi.

The lecture will be given in English.

This exhibition shows the results of an international design competition that was organized last year by the Buildings Agency and the Federal Ministry of Justice.

The aim of the competition was the stimulation of a profound and creative debate on the future of the Brussels Courthouse, that was built at the end of the nineteenth century. A selection of the proposals shows what is at stake and how diverse the possibilities of this exceptional building and this place full of history is. The exhibition opens on occasion of the Salone del Mobile, the international design fair held in Milan (12-17 april 2011). Rotor is a collective of six members, among whom Lionel Devlieger, currently visiting professor at this department.

The project will be housed in the exhibition space of the Fondazione Prada, in via Fogazzaro, Milan. Rotor observes: “The Fogazzaro exhibition hall is the space where, each new season, the Prada fashion shows are held. Every one of these shows features a spectacular series of carefully constructed new ideas. To communicate to the audience, these ideas require materialization. Beyond the brief moments of its meaningful existence, that embodiment acquires greater weight. From an idea turned into a form, what is left is just a physical presence.”

The exhibition runs from April 13th until June 5th. Private view on April 13th, from 6 to 9 PM. Adress: Via Fogazzaro 36, Milano
