Vic Glowacki is a retired professional with over 30 years of accounting and finance experience in government and the private sector. Below he reflects on mental wellness in the workplace.

It is
kind of ironic that our first workshop date for Fall 2015 term would occur on
September 29. To those who have read any of my previous articles, that date may
not mean much, if anything. To many, it means almost the end of the month and
to companies almost the end of the calendar quarter. However, for me, it marks
the very first date that I began my career in earnest. The year may have been
1981 as opposed to something more recent. One must remember that at that time
we were just beginning to use the radical new instrument in the world of
business applications: a computer! It was not even called a computer in those
days; it was called a CRT, which stands for cathode ray tube. What follows is
likely to be written in a memoir style, but I find it easier to write that way
as opposed to my traditional narrative.

To put
matters into perspective, there were no such terms in my day as internet,
email, smartphone, social media, and similar names we find common today. The
common terms we had were mainframe, spreadsheets by hand, and batch posting. We
did not have a “fax” machine. We had the terminal, a calculator, a touch-tone
phone which still used the 312 area code for the entire Chicago metro area, and
similar office tools. I had mentioned in a previous article that my first day
of training was with a woman whom I had
assumed would show me the procedures and be part of our finance team; she was
about to go on maternity leave as I had no idea I would be replacing her after
the agreed upon three days of my routines. I sat in a cubicle with a wall about
five feet high, the cubicles were in groups of four. At that time, only one
other station opposite of me was in use of the four during those days. The
other two were occupied about two years later. As with almost any procedure
that one is shown the first time, there were occasional interruptions, such as
someone introducing themselves to me and whose name I was likely to forget.
There was the President, whom I had to be sure to remember, two Vice
Presidents, their secretaries and the personnel manager and controller and a few
others who occupied out second floor administrative offices. In the afternoon,
when things were a little less hectic, I was shown the lower level where the
service bays and other company people were busy. I certainly would not remember
their names at that time wither, but would in about three months after I got my
bearings. Perhaps the quirkiest feeling
that I got from starting on September 29 was the fact that the company’s
business year ended on September 30. The only benefit that came was that I would
get two weeks’ vacation my first year instead of one if I began on October 1.
Thank goodness that the 29th was on a Monday. Because my trainer was
looking over my shoulder for the entries that occurred on those last two
business days of the year, that ended without a serious blemish on my record.
As mentioned previously in another article, however, when the trainer left, I
suppose the reader would surmise that I fell into a deep panic and forgot all
the training; at that time, I was not much for taking notes and struggled to
recall all that I had learned. You would be right. Oh, I logged on and got the
password without a hitch, found the main menu and knew what program to do the
entries in and that was about it. Doing something rather basic as entering a customer
payment to a specific invoice was not too troublesome but entering multiple
items with credits really confounded me.

The
controller was the only person I could turn to since we did not have a
supervisor position at the time and only an accounts payable person in another
area was our finance department. Since it was the year-end and reports were in
demand from the controller, all he could do was encourage me to go on and we
would have time to review the weak spots. Needless to say, that did not happen
until the end of October when month end was way out of balance between cash and
receivable balances. Of course, the other challenge that I had to control was
the phone ringing and getting acquainted with the female secretaries at the
other branch offices. All were as
different as night and day and I was the little guppy, as it were. Yes, they
seemed like the sharks. At that point, he asked me to come out with him on a
Saturday morning outside the office environment and we had a rather low key but
intense review of what I did right and what was wrong and what to correct; one
could call it a sort of mentoring session. What it came down to was a matter of
me setting up some sub worksheets to help me in my daily balancing. Mind you,
Excel was about ten years away. I replied that I would set these things up for
the following month of November until I got the hang of it; he could get rid of
me if I failed in my efforts. No such thing happened. I not only balanced to
the penny during November but also balanced every month for the next five
years. I also found time, as a result of this development of efficiency, to
make some collection calls based on our new-fangled document called aged
receivables, which lists customer balances beyond the 30 day stated terms. I would
also enter correspondence with whom I spoke with regarding their account. That
is another skill I had to develop over time: people skills. It was hard enough
with the satellite secretaries but much harder with actual customers because
you never knew who was on the other end of the phone or what their temperament
was to our company. Another hard day after that was our controller left the
company after I was there one year. One never knows what the new person is like
or if we will be reinventing the wheel. He did bring a supervisor on board,
however. By coincidence, he happened to live a few miles from my home; on bad
winter days, we took turns driving each other to work and I got to know another
side of him, which was another people
skill acquisition.

Perhaps
I should insert a few lines regarding the type of entries that I dealt with.
Keep in mind that we are talking about 1981, not 2015. The idea of entering
cash receipts was something revolutionary in our time; not many companies, even
the large well known ones, did not even have a main frame or operating system
of any kind. It was not in their budgets for the post part. The entries were
receipts for services we billed mostly for repairs or install of new radio
equipment. As suck, the dollars entered were not especially large in
themselves; the larger figures came in what was called batch entries, which I
usually limited to 30 to making balancing checks and receipts easier. After the
entries were posted for the day, we mailed our checks to the bank, some 30
miles away. We localized about two years later. The checks were sent directly
to our office; the lockbox concept, for me, came with my next position, some
seven years later where an agent for the bank emptied the lockbox and deposited
the checks for us; we would receive the check stubs and batch totals in the
next day mail. It was there that I first saw a check for one million dollars!
In that case, I was entrusted with taking that bunch of checks to the bank
downtown on my own; I asked about bonding if I was in an accident; I was told
‘don’t worry.” I secretly said, “Yeah, right.” I had two subsequent trips at
the position. Toward the end of my time there, we changed banks to the one in
downtown Milwaukee; I had to drive that up there courier style, for which I was
reimbursed for gas and mileage. The executives seemed a bit nervous to do it
themselves, but as that old song goes, my veins were “as cold as ice.” No
problem; they gave me the rest of the afternoon off upon my arrival; that was
just great, namely drive home another 22 miles, after doing about 100 just
before. That last rambling is for another article.

Why am I
writing all this? My main point is to say that based on my mentoring of
students last school year and reading through their resumes and realizing many
had gone through one internship program of one sort or another, I wanted to
share what a first day was like for me in the actual workplace on a more
permanent basis. I grant you that the graduate to be will have a much easier
time of it than I had some thirty four years ago what with the tools we have
today. However, what remains constant is the fact that procedures have not
really changed all that much over the years. Someone still has to show the new
person the essentials and the new person still has to perform them on a
consistent basis. The “how to do it” is certainly different, but the end result
remains the same. As I have said many times before, accuracy still counts for
something.

To connect with Vic and other ASK Mentors like him, visit http://ask.depaul.edu/

My advice to students interested in teaching:
Remember why you got into it in the first place, and you'll be fine.

Lessons I learned transitioning from being a student to a professional:
What you do outside the classroom is far more important than what you do in it. Get involved; put your skills to work. Find your passion, something you'd do without getting paid. Keep your eyes open. If it's good, it's good; if it's bad, it's experience.

Resources I found helpful while at DePaul:
Career Center... Gina Anselmo. :) and Professor Office Hours (don't neglect)

My most memorable professors:
Professor Joyce Miller-Bean, take... her... now.
Ginger Malin's pragmatic approach to class opened my eyes to a new transparency needed in teaching.

How DePaul helped me:
I worked with a vast array of schools, and so I am able to maintain perspective with any new initiative. The wide offerings allowed me to stretch my comfort level and keep me outside of it. Now, it's weird to do something I'm used to; the butterflies are a feeling I've grown to love.

challenge is not enough resources. It can be financial resource, it can be

not waiting for someone to say go, holding yourself accountable.

Knowing how to communicate with each team member based on
their personality and preference. If someone is not good with answering emails,
do not write them reminders after reminder. Pick up the phone or stop by their

direction and environment you would like to work in. There are pros and cons to
both working in small and large companies. You need to ask yourself some hard
questions before you start your job search. If you have absolutely no idea. I
would just base it off your personality and your ability to work with a lot or
not enough structure. One is often a given in a big corporation and the second

My most memorable classes at DePaul:

Intro to Sales by Clancy Ryan.
His attitude and straightforward approach left a big impression on me and I
still remember advice that he gave the class towards the end. It was something
of short list of 3-4 things. Work out. Get a 401K. Balance work and family. And
that was completely different from the way other professors gave advice on what
to do after college. The other professor that I still keep in touch with is
Jackie Kuehl. She was the one to connect me with Business Marketing Association
- a great resource for young marketing professionals. The most helpful class was business writing. You do
not realize how valuable a well-written and well-formatted email or proposal is
in the work place.

Standing out among many job seekers could be challenging at job fairs. In this article, ASK mentor and marketing professional Jennifer Delay James, Program Manager at Pearson, shares how you can prepare and excel at your next job fair.

Target Specific Employers During the Job Fair
Review the list of companies attending and the positions
they are looking to fill before the career fair. Identify the 5
employers you definitely want to meet and then create a separate list of
the other employers that you will visit if time allows. This will
help you prioritize your time, and if you finish early you can still meet
with employers that are not on either of your high priority lists.

Prepare in Advance
You will only have a few minutes to meet with an
employer’s representative, so be prepared so you can make the most of
this time. Practice a short 15-30 second introduction to use when
meeting with employers. Also be ready to share why you are
interested in working for each employer, highlight your relevant skills
and experience, and ask thoughtful questions about the organization or
      position.

Bring Hard Copies of your Resume
Even if you submitted your resume online prior to a career
fair, bring plenty of hard copies of your resume so the employers can
refer to it during your discussions. Employers may also ask you to
submit your cover letter and resume online through the company website.

Take Notes
When meeting with multiple employers in a short amount of
time, it can be easy to lose track of who shared what
information. Take notes on the back of the business cards you
collect or in a separate notebook. Your notes will be helpful when
      following up with each employer.

Follow Up!
Collect business cards from the people you speak with so
you have the contact information for each person you met. Take the
time to follow up with a short, personalized thank you note to each
representative you met at the job fair.

The Real Question Behind the Question

Success Potential…

by ASK mentor Lynn Gibson

Have you ever wondered what questions in an interview really mean? What is the hiring manager really looking to get out of your answers? ASK Mentor Lynn G. is here to decode the underlying meanings to job interview questions and share what hiring managers are really listening for.

During interviews, the hiring manager has one primary goal: choose the candidate with the highest success potential for the role. While the necessary skills are certainly a part of that, generally candidates who don’t have the skills don’t get an interview. So the decision comes down to behavior. And it is believed that past behavior predicts future behavior, hence the reason that most interviews are heavily weighted toward discovering your behavioral strengths.

In many past articles we’ve discussed your strengths – how to identify them, how to include them on your resume and how to incorporate them into your 30-second pitch and your stories. Now it’s time to talk about how to frame them in response to behavioral questions to make sure you highlight your success potential.

As a hiring manager, here are a dozen things I’m listening for when I ask behavioral questions:

Do you take responsibility for your actions in a challenging situation, or do you project the problems onto others or the “circumstances”?

Can you accurately and concisely identify the real problem/Challenge, explain your Actions, and describe the Result of your actions? (CAR)

Do you learn from your challenges/mistakes, or do you treat them all simply as hurdles you have to put up with?

Does frustration/irritation show in your answers…or does a can-do attitude shine through?

Do you show empathy for and understanding of others in situations, or do you project a “my way” or “victim” attitude?

Do you show belief in your ability to overcome challenges, or do you magnify them?

Have set-backs derailed your progress, or have you shrugged them off and moved forward?

What did you REALLY do on that team project? Can you relate the Situation/assignment, Tasks you were assigned, Actions you took, and Results that you measured? (STAR)

How do you assess/explain your successes? Are they all “just about you,” or do you appropriately/humbly share credit?

Do you express open-mindedness and humility in response to feedback you have received?

Do you discuss including others – in a positive way - in problem solving/decision making?

Are you enthusiastic when you talk about helping others or going above and beyond on something, or do your answers show more obligation than eagerness?

Here are a few more things I’m listening for….

When I ask about failures/weaknesses/disappointments, etc., I really want to know if you “own” your behavior, know how to break down and solve problems, view obstacles as stumbling blocks or opportunities, have the motivation to push through and finally succeed, and grow from the experience.

When I ask about successes/achievements, I want to know how and what you actually contributed if it was a team project, how humble you are in terms of assessing your success, and whether you can clearly and concisely tell me about the process you used to gain the success. In other words, is your success repeatable because it is process driven or did you get lucky?

When I ask questions about your goals, I am looking to gain insight into your values and how you measure success or progress. Can you articulate why something is important and can you chart a reasonable course to try to achieve it? This also provides insight into your “core” motivation…which is what will drive you to reach your success potential.

When I ask about the kinds of environments that have brought out the best in you, it helps me to know whether you prefer hands-on or hands-off…are you needing someone to provide motivation, or are you a self-starter?

As you think about preparing for interviews, remember that you will get a lot of behavioral questions. Hopefully after reading this, you will understand that the interviewer is using those questions to try to gauge how you will react/respond to daily situations in their firm. They are listening for more than the “answers.” They are attempting to discern the traits/strengths behind those answers and measure your success potential based on what they know about how their other successful employees “behave” (react/respond). And that is a very good thing! A really good interviewer will never offer a job to someone who can’t be happy and successful in the role. As much as you think you want a particular job, always hope that the interviewer is very capable and will spare you much disappointment and unhappiness if it really isn’t a great fit for you. That said, you are responsible to make certain that you are responding in a way that best captures your success potential. Now that you have a little more insight into the real questions behind the questions… it may be time to give a little more thought to your answers.

Four Networking Strategies for Your Next Event

Part Two: Four Networking Strategies for Your Next Event

by ASK mentor Robert Gramillano, MBA from DePaul University

In my last blog post, I shared three essential tools for
effective networking.
Now we’re going to focus on making the most of an actual networking event. Here
are 4 strategies that you can use, and that I have successfully used on
multiple occasions, to create connections at an event.

1. Arrive early. Show up about 15 minutes
early. At that time the organizers, sponsors, and speakers are getting ready. I
walk up to them and say something like: “I am glad I found you, I am so looking
forward to this… (presentation, meeting…). It looks like you are still setting
up… can I help you?” They may need to
rearrange tables, chairs, setup the projector, put brochures on the tables,
whatever, I do not mind, I like to help. I strike up conversations: “How long
have you been involved with this? What do you do? How do you like it? etc…” Even
if the organizers don’t need assistance, arriving early allows you time to
settle in, get the lay of the land, and even begin mingling with other
attendees. You never know who you will meet and by the time the event starts
you already have a good base for networking.

2. Connect with the speakers. At these
events there is usually a leader, a speaker, or a keynote. When they are done
talking, make a point to walk up to them and say: “I just want to take a moment
of your time to thank you, I really enjoyed your presentation and learned a
lot, it will be very useful as I approach new opportunities… etc…” This is an expert in your field, establish a
relationship, exchange business cards, connect on LinkedIn, you never know… it
could open doors!

3. Make small talk. Before or after the
presentation or when there is a break, turn to the people sitting around you and
casually say: “So, what brings you here?” or “How did you like the presentation?” or “Why
are you interested in this subject matter?” You could be sitting next to your
future boss and just don’t know it yet!

4. Offer to help. You arrived early, you
leave late. Offer to help take things down. At the end of the meeting the
“important people,” speakers, organizers, sponsors, panelists, etc., go out for drinks and if you are still
around helping they may invite you to join them. And that is the best time to
network… after work and over dinner or drinks!

Remember, networking is not about asking for a job, it’s about
building relationships that will need to be nourished to last a lifetime. It is
about professional courtesy and reciprocity and, most of all, is about creating
a professionally “healthy” habit of constantly expanding your leadership and
with it your “sphere of influence”. It will allow you to build a network of
resources that you will be able to tap into at any time for maximum success and
power.

Your ability to network
is related to being effective at influencing others to help you through a
mutually beneficial relationship. It is
about being at your very best at all times. Remember that somebody is always
watching; when networking, you are always on stage. The more you practice the
more at ease you will be. Networking is not a sporadic effort when looking for
a job; it is a way of life! The network you build today can be leveraged for
the success of your children and your friends as well.

Lessons I learned that helped me succeed as a student:

1. Surround yourself with a strong
network of friends and professors around you that will help you succeed in your
goal. It is sometimes quite easy to get "lost" at DePaul,
being such a big school. I remember by my junior year, when I've
switched majors 3 times, how I would often migrate from the library, to
classrooms and back to my apartment, without speaking to anyone all day. It
took me a while to realize how that is not how job seeking is like. Remember,
good grades will not get you the job. Be confident and proactive about reaching
out to classmates, professors and alumni. I found my first job after graduation
from a colleague at DePaul I had networked with.

2. As an international student, I always had the mindset
that I am very different from "Americans;" and I would often
use that excuse to be an introvert. Whether it be in group projects at school
or networking in the professional sense, I often found that by trying to find a
common connection within the American culture was the best starting point in a
conversation. So don't get stuck talking about how "you're not very competent in forks and knives" or
any cultural differences you have, or talking about how much you love the
Chicago's Blackhawks.

3. As a student, try to get as many internships as
possible. As a recruiter, it's sometimes surprising to see how many
students you see graduating from a degree they have no interest in and getting
into a profession that they had no idea about. So if your goal is to be a Buyer
at Macy's, make sure to get an internship in retail to understand if
that's what you really want to do. The more internships you have, the
better idea you'll have with what you want to do in your career, and
the better looking your resume will be. If you're stuck in an
internship that you find to be a learning curve, remember, just fake it till you
make it.

Resource I recommend:
The ASK Mentor program was the best resource I used.
Like an internship, networking with a Buyer from Macy's will
really help you get an idea on what the job entails, and get an inside view
from someone in the industry. Even as an alumnus myself, I frequently still
reach out to colleagues more senior than me to talk about career management.

My most memorable class:
I will never forget Discover Chicago.
For various reasons, and aside from getting to know the city, I'm still
very much in touch with the very first friends I made at DePaul on my 1st day
in college.

How my time at DePaul helped me:
I believe what makes DePaul
really stand out as a strong university in Chicago is the strong alumni
network, not only in the city, but domestically and internationally. DePaul ASK
mentors have really helped me think realistically and seriously about my career
during my senior year. So don't hesitate to reach out and schedule a
coffee with an alumnus!

Three Essential Tools for Effective Networking with ASK Mentor Robert G

Part One: Three Essential Tools for Effective Networking

by ASK mentor Robert Gramillano, MBA from DePaul University

As a professor and a career coach, I am often asked how to actively
engage in activities that forward and enhance career development. In career
coaching, we emphasize how important networking is because the most successful
formula for how to use your time during a job search amounts to: 5% recruiting,
10% job search websites and 85% networking efforts. Why? Because it is all
about “who” you know!

Some people do not like networking because they operate
under the wrong assumption that it is all about meeting people and asking them
for a job. They walk around with their resumes and feel awkward and humiliated
throughout the process. No wonder! That is not networking… that is begging! That
is not what networking is all about; it is
about learning, making friends (or at least acquaintances), and telling others what you are passionate about, good at and
enjoy doing. Most of all should be about having fun! So, how do you do it?

First of all, you must find places where you can meet people
in your line of work (or somewhat related). There are two categories of places
that you should look: industry events (conferences, presentations, seminars etc...)
and meetings of professional organizations. How do you find them? Simply Google
the following words in the search line: your area of interest (e.g. HR, IT etc...),
followed by the words: events calendar Chicago (or any geographic location) and
the year 2015. Literally: HR events calendar Chicago 2015.

Next, in order to network effectively, you need to prepare.
Below are three tools that you will be able to apply in any situation.

Your Elevator Pitch – An “elevator pitch” is a short
introduction (10 seconds or less) where you say something like this: “Hi!
My name is… I am a student in…. I really like to…. (Whatever you are good
at) and I am looking for new opportunities to…. (Help, apply my skills,
     gain experience… etc...).

LinkedIn - A LinkedIn account allows you to gather your entire
resume, cover letter, recommendations and more all in one place. It also
makes it easy for you to find and connect with people who share similar
     professional interests.

Business Cards – Create a business card with your name, major, and areas
of interest followed by phone, email and your LinkedIn profile address. The
LinkedIn address is important because it will allow you to direct people you
meet toward your online resume instead of carrying one with you.

Once armed with these
tools, you are ready to network! When you meet people and engage in an
interesting conversation, you can say: “You know, I really enjoyed our
conversation, let’s exchange business cards so that we can connect on
LinkedIn!” Once connected, you have a way to follow up and nourish the
relationship by sharing new events, happenings and opportunities for common
interest, as well as articles, ideas and achievements. This way, you do not
need to carry your resume with you, you are light and professional, and you do
not feel like a beggar, you are offering your professional expertise (or
opinion) and, if you are a student… your passion!

Want to learn more? Read Part 2 of this article on Four Networking Strategies for Your Next Event.

[Robert sporting a DePaul polo shirt at the GE Capital office.]

Lessons I learned as a student:
The most valuable lessons I learned as an undergraduate student were in my internships. I worked in many different fields, such as logistics, sports management, and local government, and each of these experiences were building blocks in my education. By interning in many different industries and with different companies, I was put in situations that cannot be simulated in the classroom. Whether it was public speaking in front of a group of company officials or cold calling truck drivers to sell freight, while interning I had to perform and operate in unfamiliar environments. I learned how to ask questions, how to deal with co workers, and how to know when you should act first and ask questions second. These internships supplemented my work in the classroom by providing a barometer to how I could perform as a working professional. I continue to value those experiences when faced with new challenges in my day to day work at GE Capital.

Resources I used while at DePaul:
The Career Center's job site, DePaul Experience, was the most prominent resource I used. It provided a chance to see what type of industries are hiring in Chicago and what jobs were major specific. As a graduating student looking for full time employment, it is important to understand what jobs fit your background and what jobs may require a major or skills that you do not possess. Using this information, you are more able to narrow your search and apply to positions that you have a realistic chance at hearing back from.

How DePaul Helped Me:
The four years I spent at DePaul were the most formative years of my life. Outside of the classroom, I developed lifelong friendships and learned the value of having people you care about in your life. I made many mistakes during my time at DePaul too. I regret having one too many beers at Kelly's Pub or not studying hard enough for an Economics final, but I firmly believe you go to college for four years to learn from the mistakes you make. In the classroom, time management skills and the ability to deal with stress are tools that cannot be quantified but are undoubtedly the most important parts of an undergraduate education. There are classes that I remember well and others that I will never think about again. For those classes that I never think about, they were not a waste of time. It is important to understand what you don't want to do in life, or how you don't want to think, and those forgettable classes served as clarity in that regard.

DePaul has an inherent advantage based on it's location in Chicago, and I took advantage of numerous internships that I would not have been able to pursue had I gone to school outside of the city. I am thankful for this, and urge anyone pursuing their undergraduate degree to take advantage of as many of these opportunities as possible. DePaul is truly a special place, and I hope to represent the university well for the rest of my life.

My most memorable professors:
Professor Larry Bennett was a member of the DePaul Faculty that made me think in a way in which I never had before. While he taught political science classes, he was able to get students to think about the culture in which they live. I did not pursue a career involving political science, but I believe he made me just a more aware person in general.

Professor Baxter was another professor that I always admired. He was very thoughtful, and questioned students preconceived notions of right and wrong. While that sounds abstract, I use his teachings as a financial analyst by consistently questioning why certain daily routines are done a specific way. In working at a large company, there are many bureaucratic activities that are simply done in order to check a box or because "that's the way they have always been done." Professor Baxter taught me to think differently, and that efficiency is often parallel with doing the right thing.

Advice I have for anyone interested in scientific research:
I never knew what I could do besides teach or
serve at the lab bench with my B.S. in Biological Science or PhD in
Microbiology and Immunology. Regardless of your field of study or your
trajectory, I highly recommend interdisciplinary skill refinement which can be
translatable to jobs such as project management.

How DePaul helped me in my career:

If I didn't attend
DePaul, I would have never been a scientist!

My most memorable class:

I thoroughly enjoyed my interactions
with Dr. Funk. He was always challenging yet demonstrated a deep passion for
student learning and success.

To connect with Dr. Colllier, and other ASK Mentors like her, visit http://ask.depaul.edu.

What I love about Cancun:
I love that this place combines
beautiful white sand beaches with history of the Mayan culture. I also enjoy
the diversity of the city and having access to all the benefits of a big city
while still getting the feeling of a small place. You can find people from all
over the world and direct flights to many hubs around the world. And I love the
fresh seafood.

Challenges I face in this location:
Services are expensive compared to other
parts of Mexico. Everybody warns about the heat and humidity during summer
months and high electricity prices (AC on most of the time). I'll
experience my first summer in 2015. The airport is extremely crowded during
high season.

Lessons I learned in relocating:
I negotiated a six-month transition with my
old employer and my new employer. It was too long. Never again.

Resources I use to assimilate:
Facebook was a great resource to learn about
live style, cultural activities, night life, local cheap eateries, meet people,
etc. I strongly recommend contracting a real state agent or apartment finding
service if you are not familiar with Mexico's market. Try to stay as
close to downtown as possible.

Spring into Summer Success with ASK Marketing Intern, Kelsey H.

Spring
Clean to Summer Achieve

By:
Kelsey Hershenhouse, ASK Marketing Intern, BSB Marketing & Management, 2017

Spring
cleaning may be a ritual for some, yet others might not fathom the thought of
organizing themselves for a new season. While it is fine to keep going about
your normal routine, it may be beneficial to start thinking of cleaning out the
old and starting fresh with some new materials and ideas. By cleaning out even
the simplest of drawers in your desk, or deleting old emails, you will be able to
have a more productive outlook and feel better since you will not have things
piling up. You will be more motivated to get things done on your to-do list and
even attempt something that you have put off for a while. Overall, spring
cleaning may not be as daunting as you may think and we are here to help you
get started.

1. ORGANIZE:
See that pile on the corner of your desk full of old assignments and books?
Tackle it head on. Spend a focused ten minutes going through each pile of old
documents. If it has no value to further you in the next quarter, pitch it. If
the document is helpful, use a folder and reserve those documents for later
use.

2. PRIORITIZE:
Have something you have been putting off all winter quarter? Take time now to
make a list of things you need to accomplish. It is a new quarter, so you will
be able to fit these things into your new schedule instead of having to put
them on the back burner. Mark a day or two to search for jobs and internships
on your calendar, craft your resumes and cover letters, and then send out the
documents to employers. Doing this now will prevent you from putting it off
later in the quarter, which by then may be too late to act on your original
plans.

3. ACT:
Now that you have a clean slate to work with and a list of new tasks and goals,
it is time to take action. Too many times do we say we are going to do
something, but then never end up following through. This is never a good
practice -- neither for school nor for work. Follow through with what you plan
to do, and prove that you are able to keep yourself accountable for your own
intentions. This is how you get results and achieve what you are setting out to
accomplish.

Spring is a time to enjoy the warmer weather and
prepare for summer days. It is also a time to get that spring in your step and
accomplish fresh tasks that have been hibernating in winter. Find your spring
groove so you can have a successful transition into summer where you can
achieve the goals you have set to attain.

For more information about the ASK Program, visit http://ask.depaul.edu.

Carlos is a digital strategist and project manager who was successfully integrated his love of writing into a successful career including work as a writer, product/project manager, copywriter, and web master. He is currently an eMarketing Manager at Nuveen Investments, an asset management firm in Chicago. In this article, Carlos shares how what he loves about his job may be the most challenging.

Key responsibilities in my job:

Manage the process of taking an idea all the way to
execution. Basically anything that involves digital marketing: websites, apps, advertising banners, email, video, and social.

What I love about
my job:

Autonomy: We know what the goals are but how we get there
is up to us. It allows us to explore different ways of executing our projects.

Novelty: Because digital marketing changes so quickly,
you never know what you’ll be working on in the future, and that keeps me on my
toes.

Technology: I’m a tech geek, so it’s great to be able to
use some of that knowledge in my work.

Challenges I face
in my job:

Novelty: Ha! I know I just listed it above, but because everything
is always changing, you have to keep up with all of it, and that’s not always
easy. It takes dedicated time and patience.

Data: There is a lot of data out there. We can collect
pretty much everything we want to about what users are doing in a digital
environment, but how to make sense of all that data and harnessing it is easier
said than done.

Finance: The financial sector has a lot of well-meaning
rules that are out there to protect everyone, and sometimes it’s hard to know
exactly how far you can go with some new technologies. It takes some time for
everyone to catch up and understand them, which makes it harder to be cutting
edge.

Skills needed to
be successful in my field:

Organization: You don’t need to be a freak about it, but
you do have to have the ability to organize things. Not just for yourself, but
for others. As a Project Manager it’s up
to you to keep everyone informed and up to date on how the overall project is
doing.

Personal Skills: In the end, you’ll be interacting with
lots of people. So you need to know how to communicate with them, how to get
the best out of them, and how to just get along. All while getting things done.

Curiosity: About new things. About how to do things more
efficiently. Just an overall sense of exploration to try different things to
see what works best.

Advice for
students interested in digital marketing:

Start your own project! Call it a blog, a site—whatever
it may be. Just start something you’re interested in and really enjoy. It’ll
keep you motivated to keep going and it will teach you a LOT: improve your
writing, keep you plugged into the social media landscape, get you spooled up
on the basics of web analytics and SEO, etc.

It will also give you something outside of work that is
all yours and you can do whatever you want with. They won’t let you try this wild idea at work because it’s too “risky?"

Go test it on your site.

Everything you learn on your own project will build your
skills and knowledge—things you’ll find yourself using at work down the line.

Lessons I learned that helped me succeed as a college student and in transitioning to a working professional:

Internships: These are definitely important for both getting a job down the line and for the experience. I did a few and it really helped me see what the real world would be like and whether the job was something I would be interested in. The huge upside is that you learn a bunch AND if you do a great job and it’s a good fit, you get offered a job.

Humility: When you’re starting out, you have to understand that you don’t know anything—even if you know something. Especially with the reputation (deserved or not, it doesn’t matter) that this coming generation is entitled and thinks they should be rushed to the top of the corporate ladder ASAP. So stay humble, be nice, and show a willingness to learn. It will go a long way and people will want to help you.

Time: Time is valuable. While you’re in school you have TONS of it. Take advantage of that! As you get progressively older you will have less and less “free time.” I look back to my college days and marvel at the different ways I wasted time. You have so much time that you can afford to waste it AND still have time for productive things. Like starting your own project outside of school, reading all the amazing books out there on so many different topics, and more. Take time by the horns and savor it, value it, and enjoy it!

How DePaul helped
me in my career:

I got an MA in Writing, which at first blush isn’t the most “practical” degree in the world. But it gave me time to really explore
what my writing could be. And at the same time, it did teach me some very
practical things (like editing and rhetoric).

I learned that the ability to communicate and persuade
(in both writing and in conversation) is one of the most essential skills you
can have (and has been for a LONG time).

DePaul also coincided with my move to Chicago, so I’ll
always have fond memories of moving here and starting at DePaul at the same
time.

Most memorable
class at DePaul:

Professor Mulderig was the best. I’m pretty sure I took
both his editing class and his rhetoric class.

Editing sounds boring, right? Not with him it wasn’t. It
almost felt like a programming class in that each text we looked at was a
puzzle. What’s the best way to make this text better in as few strokes of the
red pen as possible?

He made it fun, he taught us, and we all loved him. He
was funny too.

Resources that helped
me succeed as a student and as a professional:

People, really. If you find a person you click with in a
class or anywhere else, stay in touch. Reach out. Try to get together and surround
yourself with people as much as you can. It’s easy for me to say that now, but
people are what will make you happy in the end.

Sure, they can help you get a job and point you in the
right direction, but overall you’ll be happier if you’re surrounded by the
right people.

To connect with Carlos and other ASK Mentors like him visit, http://ask.depaul.edu.

Read his other articles on money, happiness, and careers at http://carlosportocarrero.com.

ASK mentor Patricia Bingué is a multi-lingual cultural context-based operations consultant, lecturer and independent researcher. She is experienced in designing strategic and resourceful solutions for businesses, educational institutes and artists. She is fluent in the languages of the Americas: Creole (spoken), English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. She has lived in Spain, Antigua, Brazil, Colombia and has traveled extensively within Europe and Latin America. Professionally, she is an astute and resourceful operations consultant with more than 15 years of experiences successfully implementing mid to long term projects across the Americas in several industries including manufacturing, call center, insurance, non-profits, education, and banking. She obtained an MS and BS in Information Systems degree from DePaul. In this article, she shares important life lessons that she learned along the way.

My 2 lessons that I wish to share with students:

You are the most valuable asset that you bring to the
marketplace and humanity, not your degree or book knowledge.

I realized that my highest
value was in who I am as an individual, not what degree I have or number of
years of professional experience or the expertise that I had. The truth of the matter is that knowledge quickly becomes obsolete with new technology and new
information that hits the market at the speed of light and there will always be
something that we are new at. It is nearly impossible for any individual to
stay ahead of the knowledge curve unless he/she neglects every other area of
their life.

What we do have total control over is who we are and who
we are becoming. By focusing all your effort on who you are as an individual,
the values that drive your behavior, your standards, where you spend your time
and energy and who you spend it with, you become a valuable asset for yourself,
your family, the marketplace and Humanity.
The professional expertise and knowledge will come naturally as you
progress in your work life.

Learning how to develop laser focus will perhaps be
your biggest challenge but it is also the secret key to achieve any dream worth
fulfilling.

Laser
focus means you have to know what is important to you and why. It means
learning to master how to remove yourself from situation that is distracting
you, it means learning how to delay gratification. It means learning how to say
NO to yourself when you engage in situations or activities that doesn't
move you closer to your priority. As humans, we can be our biggest enemy but we can be our biggest ally and secret to success if we choose to be. Either way,
it boils down to the daily and often hourly choices that we make about where to
spend our time and energy.

Resources that have helped me along the way:

Keeping a journal - I write in mine daily.

Daily conversation with myself to understand my emotions,
why I am feeling the way I do and what would the greatest expression of myself
look like.

I actively and make a weekly habit to continuously listen
to Personal Development Speakers such as Joe Dispenza , John Assaraf, Margaret
Lynch - Tony Robbins - Eben
Pagan just to name a few

How DePaul helped me in my career:

Being part of a community and
access to a library that stays open late was perhaps the greatest contribution
to my experience.

When I was an undergrad. student, I had thought about becoming a fashion editor for a magazine, since I really enjoyed penning a style column for the campus magazine and editing the other articles. Today, I currently work as a writer and editor—in the academic field. (Undergrad. me would be totally shocked!) My career today is totally different from anything I had ever considered as an undergrad. However, I love the work. To discover this love, however, I had to experience a few different types of writing and editing.

Like me, a lot of undergraduate students might realize they enjoy writing and editing, but they might not know which specific area is the best fit for them. There are many different types of writing and editing in so many different fields that it can be difficult to know exactly which type to pursue before graduating from college. Therefore, it can be really helpful to dive into different writing and editing positions and experience the work. During the college years, internships, student organizations, and even some local freelance opportunities are great ways to test out different writing and editing roles.

During undergrad., I wrote and edited for the school newspaper, campus magazine, and alumni magazine. I also had an internship working at a local radio station . . . and then I realized journalism wasn’t quite for me. During graduate school at DePaul, I realized I had a strong interest in writing pedagogy, so after graduation I worked as a textbook editor. I also wrote a book on academic writing, College PaperBuddy, and accepted a freelance opportunity to edit a dissertation, which I really enjoyed. This then helped me to realize I wanted to focus on academic writing and editing.

Even though my writing and editing work now is quite different from when I first embarked on my career, all of the experiences along the way helped me to get to where I am today. Experiencing different types of writing and editing and focusing on areas of interest is a great way for students to narrow their focus when pursuing their careers. And, whether it’s writing and editing in the fashion world or in academia, it’s all valuable practice that will hone your skills and make you a better writer and editor.

Libby is a proud alumna of DePaul University
from the Class of 2013. She has work experience in marketing and media. She is
organized, and a passionate go-getter! Eager to learn, she dives into new
projects and meticulously works to produce high-quality results. Her favorite
work allows her to interact with people and build meaningful relationships. Her specialties include competitive analysis, organization, brand compliance, customer service, and event planning. After graduation, she joined Mindshare as an Associate Media Planner and in March 2015, she advanced to Senior Associate. In this article, she shares what it's like to be a media planner.

Some of my job responsibilities as a media planner:
I both plan and buy media for a leading CPG
company. Daily activities include budget management, creating campaign reports,
and meeting with vendors to understanding the fast-paced landscape.

What I
love about my job:

I never do the same thing every day. There is always something new to work on, or a different facet of the
business that may need your attention

You are constantly meeting new people and
learning about new technologies

The community within our company has allowed
me to meet so many awesome people and I love coming to work more because of my
co-workers.

Some challenges
I face in my role:

Work
comes in ebbs and flows. Some days are long, and some days you are able to
leave on time

There
are some challenges that you are the first to face. By this I mean you have to
work through your own problems, because sometimes other mentors have never
faced the same issue before

People jump around in the
business very often; both on the agency and sales side of business

Skills
needed to be successful in my job:
Attention
to detail will get you far! The ability to multi-task is also key. I would also
say that you should be able to handle pressure. Sometimes there are tight
deadlines and you need to be able to face challenges head on and without
hesitation.

Advice I have for students looking into this field:
I
would recommend trying to learn about all of the different types of media
careers. I barely knew about media planning when I was in school, but there are
so many avenues of advertising/PR/communications you may not realize are
available.

How
DePaul helped me in my career:
My
time at DePaul helped me learn that the world has endless possibilities for
jobs, but you have to show grit and put in time to earn a position. I took an
unpaid internship and my connections ended up helping me land my first job.
Chicago is a wonderful city to explore with so many possibilities, try to stay
open to multiple options!

Why I volunteered to become an ASK mentor:
I used ASK as a resource when I was a student at DePaul and found it really helpful! There were so many job titles I saw that I had never learned about in class, and it helped me learn about different avenues. I would love to help students learn about media planning and media buying.

Ms. Deletioglu with her 8th grade Algebra students - striking a pose after a successful quiz.

What I love about my job:

I love sharing my love and
excitement of mathematics with my students.

I love learning new methods, tools, approaches and
even ideas and being able to share them with my students in the classroom.

I love serving as a teacher, mentor and support for my
students. I believe I was called to be an educator and find great purpose
in what I do.

Some challenges I face within my career:

Not having enough time to do everything
that is needed and asked of you.

Overwhelming demands that never seem to ever stop.

Juggling and prioritizing all the demands while trying to maintain a healthy balance and equilibrium with yourself.

Skills needed to be a successful teacher:
Flexibility, creativity, adaptability,
patience, strong knowledge of your content, compassion, kindness, empathy &
thick skin.

Tips for those interested in teaching:
My advice would be get into the classroom as
soon as possible. Ask to observe a teacher in the content and grade you
are interested in. And then ask to observe a teacher of a grade and
content that isn't your own. Go and see what education is about
and be prepared to hear the positive as well as the negative. Lastly,
make sure you know how to refill your tank - i.e personal interests, hobbies,
self health, strong support system, if you don't take some time to
figure that out now.

How DePaul helped me in my career:
I can not say enough great things
about the Graduate School of Education. They allowed me the opportunity
to get into the classroom and mind you at a variety of different types of
schools. They gave me practical advice that I could immediately take and
practice in the classroom. The experience within the classroom really shaped me
into the educator I am today.

To connect with Mary and other mentors like her, visit http://ask.depaul.edu.

What are your job responsibilities?
As an Account Manager and Associate
Project Manager, I have many responsibilities that require various skills. As
an Account Manager, I deal with clients (hotel teams in this case) on a day to
day basis. I manage social media accounts, make up updates to their independent
sites, collect and analyze Google Analytics performance reports, and keep an
eye on our OTA listings. As an Associate Project Manager, I assist the Design
& Development team in site builds. We launch about 10 new websites a
quarter for clients and I am in charge of uploading and implementing all content/photo/URLs
into the sites.

What do you love about your
role?
I love the daily realization of how
much I have learned. I started as an intern at Blue Magnet Interactive and
thinking back to my first day/month here I am stunned at how much I have learned
and grown. It's incredible how much you are able to learn when you are
interested in what you are doing.

I also love the creative aspect of
my job. From creating social media posts, writing copy for new sites, and
creating banner ads for my clients, I am able to play with different fonts,
images, and slogans.

Finally, I love the people I work
with. Blue Magnet Interactive is a smaller company and every person I work with
is eager and hardworking. We have a lot of fun but know when to buckle down and
get work done.

What are some challenges you face on
the job?
A challenge I have faced is the
curve balls that come my way throughout the day. I typically have my whole day
planned out and when a client calls me needing assistance immediately, it can
be hard to adapt.

Another challenge can be presenting
information and data to our clients on calls. We conduct monthly status calls
and while the terminology we use on a daily basis makes sense to us on the Blue
Magnet Team, it is not always easily translated to clients. It's important to
remember to relay the information to clients in a clear, concise manner.

Finally, it is easy to get
frustrated when developing websites. Many of the elements that are tied into a
successful site build are very technical and one wrong step can cause an error
in the entire end product. Patience and concentration is key here!

What skills are needed to be
successful in your role?
Whether it's creating new copy for a
hotel website, reporting data back to the client, or responding to a request on
social media, attention to detail is key. For example always proofreading copy,
double checking stats, and being consistent in a voice on social outlets is
necessary to be top of the line at your job and industry.

What advice to you have for students
interested in online marketing?
Be ready to learn and adapt! As a
public relations major, I was not totally confident I'd be successful at online
marketing. But I shortly realized the two areas overlap a lot and I could
easily apply my knowledge and skills learned in my public relations experience
to online marketing. Accepting that there is always more to learn and keeping
an open mind is a great way to quickly succeed.

Merrill has enjoyed a truly global career over the years, having worked in a variety of projects in the US, Europe, Asia, and South America. In 2011, he made the move to Australia first as a Lead Cost Manager for Fluor managing the external client cost and internal cost of construction projects. In 2013, he joined Bechtel as a Cost/Change Control Manager managing a group of project controls professionals who handle all prime and subcontractor contract claims, internal trending, and back charge vendor management. In this article, he shares the joys and challenges of relocating to Australia.

What do you love about Australia?
I have worked in Australia now from 2011 to present with
a 1 year stint in Chile in the middle of my assignment here. I love Australia
as the people are very friendly, love their family time but all the same are
very hard workers. Australia has some of the best beaches in the world and
where I am in Gladstone you can swim in the ocean all year round. There is lots
to see and explore in this southern part of the world. You may not know it but
the width of Australia is as big as the USA.

What are some challenges you found living there?
Probably the only challenge I found was learning to
drive on the opposite side of the road from the USA. Found some difficulty at
first with how the Australians shorten up words in their language such as they
call McDonalds “Macca’s”. Most of the small outlying towns all have names that
are tied to the native peoples and they can be quite difficult to pronounce.

What lessons have you learned in relocating?
I have worked all over the world for various USA
companies and I have found most important is to review carefully their
international policies that are very specific for each country and assignment
you go on. You need to know what you are getting into before you sign up and do
not be drawn by the exoticness of some assignment.

What advice do you have for those interested in moving to
another country?
Once your company has approached you about an
international assignment I would go to the internet and first learn all I can
about that country (things to do/things not to do, demographics, religions,
etc) and then look at Google maps and find out exactly where the location is
within the country you are going to be located. Do lots of research and be
prepared.

How did your DePaul experience affect your career?
I think one of the greatest points in my life was my education at DePaul. The longer it has been since I graduated the more I realize the quality and pertinent focus that I obtained from my education. Having put two kids through similar course work at other universities I have come to realize just how good the Finance and Accounting curriculum was at DePaul. I use what I learned almost every day in my work. I also think the diversity of DePaul has made me a more tolerant and a better person in every aspect of my life.

ASK mentor Britney Macdonald currently works in higher education as Program Coordinator at the Chicago-Kent College of Law where she facilitates six LL.M. overseas training programs including class scheduling,
professor visa facilitation, and communicating with international partners. While a student, she was a member of Delta Gamma, Student Government Association, Residence Hall Council, and the National Honor Society. She credits her network at DePaul as instrumental in her career. Read Britney's advice below and her secrets to college success.

A lesson I think students should know:
Younger generations are notorious for
having laptops, ipads, etc. in class. Do yourself a favor and leave those
devices at home. I don't know many people who have the self-control to stay off
of social media or the web during class. Our attention is constantly disrupted
by the internet which prohibits us from truly listening to the professor.
Additionally, finals won't seem overwhelming because you won't be learning the
material for the first time.

The saying "it's not about what you know, it's about
who you know" is sadly incredibly true. Start your networks early and be
kind to others - it's a small world!

Resources I found helpful:
DePaul's internship and career services were
instrumental in my transition from an undergraduate student to a working
professional.

How DePaul has helped me in my career:
DePaul allowed me to
simultaneously intern and earn class credit which was absolutely invaluable.
The classroom is a great place to build an educational foundation, but real
world experience allows you to apply that knowledge and offers a different
method of teaching. I wouldn't be where I am today without those internship
experiences.

To connect with Britney and other mentors like her, visit http://ask.depaul.edu.

What I do as a Patent Attorney:
Evaluation of new invention disclosures
and evaluation of Nokia's patents and patent applications in the
assigned areas of technology to determine viability of their infringement by
products in market and acceptance in a technical standard.

What I love about my job:
First, I am working with brilliant
inventors daily. Second, I am using both
my technology and legal expertise to assistant the inventors. Third,
I am interfacing with external patent attorneys and keeping up with
development of technology law.

What are some challenges I sometimes face on the job:

Communication is the biggest
challenge. Law and technology speak
different languages. Inventor and patent
examiners speak different languages. Patent attorney need to understand both
sides.

Keeping up with the development in both technology and
law is a challenge too.

Being able to make decision quickly is a challenge. Patent related issues are usually under rigid deadlines.

What skills are needed by patent attorneys in order to be successful:

Subject matter expertise involving
technology and law.

Good communication skills.

Good time management skills.

My advice for someone interested in this role:
A technical or science background and a J.D.
degree are required to be a patent attorney. An alternative career path is
patent agent which does not require J.D. degree.

Throughout positions of successively greater authority and leadership, across multiple industries (valve manufacturing, recycling, big box logistics, and health care products), he currently is branch manager (general manager) for a custom and commodity valve manufacturer with 95 on his team throughout a 127,000 sf site, which he prepared, opened, staffed, led operations for from day one. In this post, he shares a favorite interview question and advice on how to answer it.

Job Interview Zinger Question:

“If I were to contact your previous or current supervisor, what do you think he or she would tell me about your work performance? What would he or she tell me about your attendance?”

Sample Answer:

“I believe my previous supervisor/manger would speak very highly of me and say that I was a team player that was always willing to go the extra mile for both the internal customer and the external customer. As far as my attendance they would say that I had great attendance and arrived to work on time on a daily basis.”

Interview Advice:

“The most important advice I can give anyone about interviewing is to be yourself and to make sure you talk about things you are passionate about. It is very evident while interviewing someone that is just answering the questions with the answers they think you want to hear versus what they believe in. I can always tell when someone is not being true to themselves.”

ASK thought this was a "Zinger" question because in interviews your potential employer will want to know about your dedication to the job. Answering the question correctly is crucial because all employers are looking for employees who will be 110% committed to his or her career. However, you must also present an accurate picture of who you are and how you work. If you tend to stroll in to work ten to fifteen minutes late, then you should not pretend to be someone you are not in the interview. Perhaps your current work environment allowed flexibility in arrival time. If so, then you can share that you will always respect what the job requires. Highlight what you excel in and when you are asked the infamous question, "What are some of your weaknesses?" then touch on how you may struggle with a particular area, yet are willing to improve in this area in order to be successful in the position. Be true and provide answers that show your true self, like Michael mentioned, employers can tell when one is being false. Citing examples can also demonstrate the genuineness of your answers.

Want to learn more on how to prepare for job interviews? Sign up for a practice interview with Michael or other ASK mentors like him. Visit our website at http://ask.depaul.edu for details. Questions?
What helped me succeed as a college student?

Focusing is the only way to succeed, both academically
and professionally, as a college student. This is a very simple concept;
however, many students overlook how much self-discipline it actually takes to
concentrate. The best way to focus is to know exactly what you want to achieve,
set logical goals, and eliminate any distractions that will keep you from achieving
those goals.

How DePaul Helped Me?

As a DePaul University student, I learned how to harness
my ambitions through the power of concentration and dedication. I diligently
worked to achieve my academic and professional goals, achieved them, and have continued
to implement those values into my life, both personally and professionally. In
addition to learning what it takes to succeed, I met some wonderful mentors and
professors whose direction will serve me well for years to come.<del></del>

To connect with Joe and other finance ASK mentors like him, visit ask.depaul.edu

What are your job
responsibilities as a Media Director?
I
oversee media investment and marketing support for the Allstate and Advance
Auto Parts clients across multiple media vehicles and targets (including
Multi-cultural). I manage a team of 11 people.

What do you love about your role?
I love
that every day can present a new challenge.
I love
that I get to work with some of the smartest people I’ve ever met.
I love that I get to be involved in an industry that is frequently on the cutting edge
of consumer technology.

What are some challenges you face
on the job?
The
constant frenetic pace can be difficult sometimes. Clients can offer
unique challenges and frustrations that seem to be endless. Lastly, it
can sometimes feel like you have to reinvent the wheel.

What skills are needed to succeed
in as a media director?
Consistency,
autonomy, and critical thinking are three of the most important skills to focus
on as you transition from being a student to a working professional. I
learned quickly in my first years out of college, and see it often in the new
employees that work for me, that every project you work on in the professional
world needs to be A+ work. Your focus needs to be constant and consistent
in order to be truly successful. There is no syllabus to guide you or
study groups to help you. Once you embrace the power you have over your
career you can create a clear path for yourself.

Critical
thinking, problem solving, patience, consistency, and dedication are the most important
traits you can have in a job like mine. Just as important however is a
sense of humor and the ability to not take yourself too seriously.

What advice do you have for
students interested in entering the world of media planning?
Be
passionate about consumer technology and human behavior. Understand how
consumers act and how you would want to communicate with them. Do not be
afraid to learn and read and understand what is coming next in the world.

Understanding
the trends in your industry are so vitally important. Learn who the right
people to follow on Twitter are, who writes the blogs, subscribe to the
trades. Don’t be surprised by the trades and always be able to give an
elevator speech on the latest developments because you never know who might
ask.

How has studying at DePaul helped
you in your career?
DePaul
connected me to the city and to opportunity. It taught me how to embrace
a fast-paced professional environment. DePaul’s network of professional,
professors, and resources also taught me how to best tap into the expertise
around me to help grow my own career and experiences.
