"Sense of Urgency" for Both Teams as Countdown Continues to Today's Monon Bell Game

November 14, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — "For the first time, DePauw has qualified for the NCAA Division III football tournament," begins Michael Pointer's game day story in this morning's Indianapolis Star. "If anyone thinks that diminishes the Tigers' sense of urgency for today's tiebreaking Monon Bell game against Wabash, they don't know much about one of college football's most storied rivalries." DePauw (7-1) received an automatic playoff qualification from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. With a victory today, Wabash College (8-1) can potentially secure a playoff bid of its own. [Download Video: "2008 Monon Memory" - 4105kb]

For the Tigers, according to senior quarterback Spud Dick, "This game means so much to so many people. There's no way a playoff game (next week) is going to change that."

The article notes that the all-time series is tied at 53-53-9 headed into the 116th Monon Bell Classic, which kicks off at 1:07 p.m. at Blackstock Stadium. DePauw University leads in games played since the Monon Bell was introduced in 1932 as the winners' prize by a 37-34-6 count. More than 8,000 fans will attend today's sold out renewal of the rivalry. Pointer notes that Robby Long, interim head football coach at DePauw, "was a starter on the University of Illinois team that won the Big Ten title in 2001 and played in the Sugar Bowl. But he said he has found nothing that matches the passion of the Monon Bell Game because it's such a focal point not just this week, but the entire season."

"We had rivalries, we had trophy games, but nothing like this," Long tells the Star. "It means so much to the teams, the alums and the institutions. You just don't have this setup at the Division I level." [Download Video: "1955 Monon Memory" - 6739kb]

Another story, in Illinois' Niles Daily Star, profiles Tiger players Nick Etzcorn, Paul DePoy and Ben Brandstatter. DePoy's father, Roger, tells that paper, "Paul has been fortunate to be able to combine a great education with the chance to play college football at a special place. The level of competition is great and the annual Monon Bell game is one of the best rivalries in the country."

Tickets are sold out for today's game, but all of the action can be seen across the nation on HDNet. Alumni telecast parties have been arranged by DePauw and Wabash alumni in 65 cities.

The presidents of DePauw and Wabash have issued a joint letter to fans of the rivalry.

Prindle Institute Presents 'Ethics of Employment Practices' Next Week

November 14, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — The current global recession has highlighted the tenuous and difficult nature of work in a volatile economic climate. On Thursday and Friday, November 19-20, DePauw University's Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics will present a symposium,"Ethics of Employment Practices." The sessions, which are free and open to the public, will bring together practitioners, academics, and social critics to discuss how employment practices are evolving in an increasingly interdependent, technologically driven global economic system.

The symposium will begin Thursday, November 19, at 7:30 p.m., with a keynote address by Tim Solso (pictured at right), CEO of Cummins Inc. and 1969 graduate of DePauw. He will discuss "The Employee-Employer Contract in the Global Economy." (A shuttle will depart the UB Bus Stop at 7:15 p.m. and return after the lecture.)

On Friday at 11:45 a.m., a lunchtime panel discussion will examine "Global Management and Human Capital." Panelists will be I. Jay Bennett '91, human resources director, integrated supply chain operations at Rolls-Royce; and Newt Crenshaw '85, vice president of international corporate affairs, Eli Lilly and Company. Each speaker will talk for 15-20 minutes, reserving time for questions and response from the audience. Lunch is provided. If you plan to attend, please reply to Linda Clute at lclute@depauw.edu. Tigers Top Centre to Improve to 2-1

November 13, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — DePauw improved to 2-1 on the season following a 172-112 win over visiting Centre at the Erdmann Natatorium.

Catie Baker (left) led the way by winning three events including the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.04), 200 breast (2:31.07) and 200 individual medley (2:17.06).

Katie Massey was a double-winner in the 50 freestyle (24.84) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.19) as was Morgan Crandall in one-meter diving (177.40) and three-meter (153.30).

Other DePauw firsts came from Callie Boehme in the 1000 free (10:56.13), Rachel Wheaton in the 200 free (2:02.05) and Sally Tabler in the 200 fly (2:18.71).

The Tigers return to action at the Wabash Invitational, November 20-21.

Tigers Beat Centre; Improve to 3-1

November 13, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — The DePauw men's swimming and diving team improved to 3-1 on the season following a 176-110 win over visiting Centre at the Erdmann Natatorium.

The Tigers took firsts in 10 of the 16 events as Robby Spichiger was a double-winner in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:29.33) and the 500 free (4:57.81). Matt Kukurugya, likewise, won two events with firsts in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.11) and the 200 breast (2:16.77).

Johnny Montgomery won the 200 free (1:45.55) and the 100 free (47.98). John Cook captured the 50 free (21.60) and Charlie Boehme won the 200 back (2:04.17).

The 200 medley relay of Steve Klabak, Kukurugya, Brogan Runion and Cook opened the meet with a win in 1:37.53, while the 200 free relay of Montgomery, Josh Baugh, Klabak and Cook) wrapped it up with a first in 1:26.72.

The Tigers return to action at the Wabash Invitational, November 20-21.

Prof. Matthew Markham to Perform at UW-Green Bay

November 13, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — Matthew Markham, assistant professor of music at DePauw University, will perform a November 21 guest recital at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The program, which will also feature pianist Timothy Cheek, will focus on Czech folk songs.

"Markham is an internationally celebrated vocalist, who has performed on some of the world's most prestigious venues," notes an announcement. "He is on the voice faculty at DePauw University School of Music where he teaches applied voice and art song literature."

Spud Dick '10

DePauw started a freshman quarterback in the second game of the 2006 football season. He was undersized at 5'10", inexperienced at the college level and perhaps the most exciting thing about him was his name: Spud.

If you haven't heard senior Spud Dick's story before, the answers to your questions are yes and no, respectively. Yes – the name comes from short-lived Budweiser mascot Spuds MacKenzie. And no – his real name is Gerry, which he shares with his father and grandfather. (As it turns out, Spuds wasn't the dog's real name, either.) Days after his birth, Dick's great uncle suggested the nickname as a way to distinguish him from the elder Gerrys. The name stuck.

"My mom called me Gerry until I was 4 or five so I knew what my real name was," Dick says.

Now a four-year starter, the quarterback's name is his least compelling story. Dick holds or shares nearly every record for his position at DePauw. In regards to the record that matters the most to many players and fans – that of wins against rival Wabash College in the Monon Bell Classic – Dick has two so far. The 116th contest between the schools on Saturday, Nov. 14 gives Dick a shot at a third.

"I was fortunate to start the Monon Bell game as a freshman, but I don't know I really appreciated until my sophomore year how much it means to everybody in the community, the alumni and the students here," Dick says. "We have coaches who played in front of 100,000 people who say that there's nothing quite like Monon because it's such a fierce rivalry."

"The fun thing about this week and Monon is it's the one week during the year you feel like a Division-I quarterback," Dick adds. "You do four or five interviews a day leading up to the game and the game is televised. This is the one week when you do feel like you're part of the big time."

Most people know of Spud Dick the quarterback, but he says the balance being a student-athlete at DePauw is heavily weighted on the other side of his life.

"I'm more of a student at this level," says Dick, an economics major and Management Fellow. "The academic course load that we have here mandates that you spend a majority of your time on school."

When he was looking for a college to attend, Dick considered DePauw's emphasis on academics to be an advantage. Football was definitely part of his decision – just not all of it.

"The more I visited the DePauw campus, the more I felt that it was the place for me," Dick says. "The rigorousness of the academics, the atmosphere on campus, Management Fellows and the football program – the combination of those things was something that none of the other schools I looked at came close to matching."

"I took one economics class in high school, but I only developed a real interest for it once I got here," Dick says. "I've taken more courses than what I've needed for the major. I've looked at classes just to fill credit hours and I find myself going back to economics."

After DePauw, Dick hopes to enter the business world. He spent the 2009 spring semester, in a Management Fellows internship at RICS Software in Indianapolis, founded by DePauw graduate David B. Becker '75.

The choice to participate in intercollegiate athletics, especially at the position he plays, means that Dick doesn't get much free time. On top of studying for exams, writing papers and practicing with the team, he estimates he spends six or seven hours a week reviewing film.

"When some students get a break, they'll go play video games or hang out with their friends," Dick says. "I pop open my laptop and watch game film."

The team's 200-page playbook grows as well, adding dozens of plays as the season progresses.

"It really forces you to learn how to manage your time," says Dick.

Dick gives credit to DePauw Offensive Coordinator Dustin Ward, who played quarterback at the University of Illinois, for much of the success he's had.

"When I came in as a freshman we had a great running back in Jeremiah Marks," Dick says. "We were a run-heavy offense, and that took a lot of pressure off of me. ... [Ward] has turned it into more of a mental game. I've had to learn the offense inside and out, and that's allowed me be as successful as I've been."

Asked what he's most proud of from his time at DePauw, Dick has a lot of possibilities to choose from. He doesn't name a record he holds or a game he's won. His answer reaffirms what college athletics is all about.

"I've been able to maintain a high GPA – 3.5 or above – and we're going to the playoffs for the first time ever in our history," Dick says. "Being able to perform at a high level both on and off the field is my proudest accomplishment at DePauw. Definitely."

November 12, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — Saturday's football game between DePauw University and Wabash College for the coveted Monon Bell is "for more than that this time around," WRTV sports director Dave Furst told his audience on the Indianapolis ABC affiliate tonight. Furst introduced a report by Brad Brown on how the Tigers have already earned its first-ever trip to the NCAA playoffs, while Wabash needs a victory to get into the tournament.

The piece shows footage of the Tigers' practice this afternoon and includes comments from senior quarterback Spud Dick and interim head coach Robby Long.

"While the Little Giants have gone to the playoffs two years in a row, DePauw's won the last two Bell games," Larry Hawley noted in his 10 p.m. sports report on FOX outlet WXIN. It, too, showed the Tigers preparing for their regular season finale with Wabash, and featured interviews with Dick and sophomore running back Jon Ellis.

"In our minds this is a playoff game, this is a must-win game," Ellis tells the station.

"I think both schools expect their team to win," Dick, who has rewritten the DePauw record book, adds.

On its Web site, the station offers a piece on DePauw assistant coach James Mungro, a member of the Indianapolis Colts 2006 Super Bowl team. Also available is a Monon Bell blog, which contains several archived stories from past Monon Bells, Hawley's blog, and a preview from Wabash.

The 116th Monon Bell Classic kicks off at 1:07 p.m. Saturday at DePauw's Blackstock Stadium. Tickets are sold out but the game can be seen across the nation on HDNet. Alumni telecast parties have been arranged by DePauw and Wabash alumni in 65 cities.

The presidents of DePauw and Wabash have issued a joint letter to fans of the rivalry.

Prof. Kevin Howley Contributes Review to Journal of Radio & Audio Media

November 12, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — Kevin Howley, associate professor of communication at DePauw University, has a book review published in the current edition (volume 16, issue 2) of the Journal of Radio & Audio Media. Dr. Howley analyzes Rosemary Day's books Community Radio in Ireland: Participation and Multiflows of Communication and Bicycle Highway: Celebrating Community Radio in Ireland.

Howley writes, "In an era when Internet radio and social networking sites such as YouTube and Facebook appear to challenge the rationale of community media, Day's emphasis on community building and development, collective action and participatory communication highlights the relevance of community radio -- and other forms of community media -- to the ongoing struggle for communicative democracy locally, nationally and globally."

James Thompson '66 Honored by the Association of American Medical Colleges

November 12, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — James N. Thompson, interim president of the Medical College of Georgia and 1966 graduate of DePauw University, has received one of three Special Recognition Awards from the board of directors of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Dr. Thompson was recoognized for his exceptional leadership to improve medical care through a focus on quality and safety. An otolaryngologist and former medical school dean who served as president and chief executive officer of the Federation of State Medical Boards, Thompson was honored during the AAMC's annual meeting in Boston.

The AAMC board confers the award on individuals with a long-standing commitment to academic medicine as evidenced by exemplary service to, or collaboration with, the AAMC or its members. Other 2009 recipients include Dr. Elias Zerhouni, the 15th director of the National Institutes of Health, and Dr. James A. Hallock, president emeritus of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.

Dr. Thompson served from 2003-08 as president and chief executive officer of FSMB, a national non-profit association representing the 70-member allopathic and osteopathic state medical licensing and regulatory boards in the United States and its territories. He is a frequent speaker on the topics of health and medical education policy, professional behavior of physicians and the role of regulatory authorities in preserving the integrity of the medical profession.

Prior to joining the FSMB, Thompson was on the faculty of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He served as dean of the School of Medicine from 1994-2001 and as a vice president of the university from 1997-2001. He was named dean emeritus in 2002.

Thompson was previously recognized with the 2009 Distinguished Service Award from the National Board of Medical Examiners; the Harris Mosher Award for Excellence in Clinical Research from the American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otological Society for research on corrosive esophageal injuries; and received a 2006 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from DePauw, among other honors.
