In many, perhaps most cases, this protection is well warranted.   Many species are enjoyed by humans for their unique properties or their place in nature.  Others are vital to the balance of ecosystems or play a vital role in nature.  Still others may provide vast amounts of data to science on matters of evolution, biology or even practical data, applicable to medical treatment or biological control of pests.   It would be unwise to slate any species for intentional extermination without first considering whether it might have such importance and perhaps preserving some specimens, yet this does not preclude the possibility that extinction may be the best thing for humanity and nature, at least with a few species.

Numerous species of plant, animal, fungus and microbe are, dare I say it:  useless and better off wiped off the face of the planet.  Pathogens rank high here as do some parasites, such as intestinal worms, which are not prey or food for any species and play little role in the ecosystem, other than occasionally causing extreme pain, disease and death, often to humans.  Disease vectors, such as some breeds of mosquito also may be best off being dispensed of, if it is possible to do so.

If this makes me sound a bit human-centric, I have no apologies.   I happen to be a human and I also like my species quite a lot.  I have no problem dispensing with little nasties that cause my fellow main to suffer or die.

So to the Rocky Mountain Locust and the Small Pox virus I say only this:  Good riddance!

For example, if there were a law which made it illegal to stab oneself in the eye with a red hot soldering iron, I’d have a hard time thinking of a circumstance where such a law would cause me, or most others, any trouble. It might be worth opposing as a matter of principle, on the grounds of personal freedom, but it certainly would have no practical problems.

Yet in Wisconsin there are many uniting to fight for their right to be stupid. How dare the government try to stop them from doing something dangerous and with no benefit? Perhaps they have a point. The government has limited abilities to protect an idiot from their own idiocy, and no matter what laws are in place anyway, it’s impossible to idiot proof the world.

Raw milk sales are typically banned (or at least restricted) in most states in the US and indeed in most industrial countries. Although this is begining to change as more states in the US permit the sale of raw, unpasteurized milk. Raw milk is often available from local small time farms, but it is restricted in the larger production operations that are overseen by the US FDA and ADA and ship product across state lines. Indeed the restrictions on unpasteurized milk is part of the larger sanitary and food safety laws that have become ubiquitous in the 20th century. In addition to the requirement to pasteurize milk, food producers are required to use approved food handling equipment, to submit to regular health and sanitation inspections, to maintain date records for food expiration and to cook all pre-cooked meet products to within temperature guidelines. Meat packers are subject to requirements for protective clothing for workers and must also wash down all process areas regularly with disinfectant.

These regulations, which include laws requiring the pasteurization of milk are all part and parcel of legislation aimed at assuring that food supplies are reasonably safe from harmful pathogens. Whether or not any should be allowed to avoid such regulations, with informed consumer consent, is an interesting issue. Would you ever want the freedom to buy product which clearly states “the workers who produced this product did not wash their hands after using the toilet.” or “We never disinfect our processing areas?”

Yet it seems that is exactly what some want to do with milk! Pasteurization was truly one of the biggest steps forward in food safety, especially when it comes to products like milk. By its very nature, milk is an excellent way of transporting bacteria all the way from the farm to the human gut.

It’s no surprise that many of those involved in the pro-raw milk protests are also all over the organic food fad yet are the first to demand that completely safe and hygienic practices like irradiation and genetic engineering of crops be banned. Apparently safety can be compromised when it comes to “natural” dangers.

Milk can (and does) pick up potentially pathogenic bacteria right from the beginning. Even a minor infection without symptoms in a cow can taint the milk, but the bigger issue is the sanitation of the milk ducts, utters and milking equipment. As a standard practice, dairly farmers clean off the utters of cows before milking and milking pumps are generally disinfected at regular intervals. Yet these procedures are far from completely effective. They may usually get rid of most of the biological matter, but they don’t insure all bacteria is removed.

Imagine, for example, you’ve just had your hand covered with fecal matter. You then rinse it off with water and give it a quick wash with a touch of soap. Would you now want to eat with this hand? Probably not. You’d more likely want to spend a good few minutes scrubbing it and using a lot of soap and water. You’d be right to do so, because removing bacteria requires more than just a quick swab-down, but this is generally the extent of the cleaning of a cow’s utters. If they were scrubbed so thoroughly each time the cow is milked, it would take a lot of time and labor and would likely leave them sore and raw from the daily scrubbing.

Even if the milk which is taken from the cow has a low enough bacteria count to make it reasonably safe to drink, this will not necessarily remain the case after it is placed in storage for consumption. Milk is an excellent medium for bacterial growth. An emulsion of fats, water, proteins and sugars, it offers all a colony of bacteria could ever want to grow into a veritable cesspool of disease. Refrigeration can slow this process, but does not completely halt it.

Pasteurization has been standard for most of the 20th century. It exposes the product to a short period of heat to kill bacteria. Other processes like irradiation offer an alternative. The use of pasteurization or other disinfection methods have vastly improved food safety. Still, improper pasteurization or milk which slips through unprocessed continues to occasionally cause illness.

It should be noted that pasteurization is not sterilization and is no substitute for maintaining good standards of sanitation. It inactivates or destroys the majority of bacteria and pathogens but it does not absolutely eliminate all microbes from the product.

And yes, “organic” raw milk has been the source of several major outbreaks of food-borne illness.

Regardless of the law, drinking unpasteurized milk is just not a good idea. And for farmers, I’d highly suggest against selling raw milk. It could open up any farmer or reseller to a huge liability.

The Falcon-9 is designed to be human rated and is complete with the Dragon capsule, designed to carry cargo and eventually humans to Low Earth Orbit.   The rocket also can be configured as the Falcon-9 Heavy, which consists of three core boosters and is capable of lifting 28 metric tons to LEO, putting it ahead of the mighty Russian Proton rocket, the current most popular heavy lift ELV, and exceeding the capacity of all current ELV’s with the exception of the ultra-heavy configuration of the Atlas-V.

SpaceX also hopes to make the Falcon-9 considerably cheaper than other rockets.   The vehicle is intended to be partially reusable, with stages being retrieved after parachuting back to earth.  If the design meets projections, it may set a new standard for the economics of heavy lift vehicles and possibly help reestablish the United States as a major player in the commercial satellite launch business.

Now a new study has come out showing that there is zero increase in the risk of autism in children who are given the MMR vaccine, even in those who are already at high risk for autism. This refutes the claim made by some that vaccines contribute to autism or are a factor that exacerbates it.

Yet another study finds no evidence that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine raises the risk of autism — even among children who are at increased genetic risk.

Experts said the findings, reported in the April 21 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, should be reassuring to parents, particularly those who already have a child with autism.

The theory that MMR vaccination raises the risk of autism has its roots in a small study done in 1998 — one that was later found to be fraudulent. Since then, numerous international studies have found no evidence that vaccines help trigger autism.

Still, some parents remain worried. And those who already have a child with autism seem even more concerned.

“Research has shown that parents of kids with autism spectrum disorders are more likely to delay vaccinating their younger children,” said Dr. Bryan King, an autism researcher at the University of Washington, in Seattle.

“Basically, they wait until the developmental dust has settled, and it looks like their child will be unaffected (by autism),” said King, who wrote an editorial published with the study.

But delaying recommended vaccinations puts children at risk of potentially serious infections, said Dr. Anjali Jain, the study leader and a researcher at the Lewin Group, a healthcare consulting firm in Falls Church, Va.

It’s known that genes make certain children more vulnerable to autism — that’s why kids with an affected older sibling are at higher-than-average risk. But environmental factors also have to play a role, experts believe.

One theory, King said, is that it takes a “triple hit” — genes, plus an environmental trigger that strikes during a particular time window in brain development.

But based on years of research, the MMR vaccine is not that trigger, according to health experts. “Every study that’s looked at this, through every strategy they’ve used, has found no signal,” King said.

The increase in autism is most likely the result of increased screening and a broadening of the diagnostic criteria for the condition.

This study may put some pressure on certain groups, such as Generation Rescue or Autism Speaks, who are trying to put a legitimate face on the lies they tell, even despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary. Sadly, it is unlikely to do much for the average anti-vaxxer. Such individuals are not interested in science and not persuaded by data. If they were, this would have been over a long time ago.

It may also help in convincing those who are sitting on the fence or who are generally ignorant of the issue and are facing the decision of whether or not to vaccinate their first child. In such circumstances, every chance to get such information in the general media should be seen as a victory.

The topic of why otherwise intelligent people subscribe to discredited ideas like vaccines causing autism is another discussion onto itself. It involves a complex mix of cognitive dissonance, being heavily invested in something, persecution complexes, and a near-religious conviction in the idea. Thus, this will not change any minds that have already been made up.

I think my favorite thing about this is that the message to vaccinate kids and opposition to the anti-vaccine movement is making such a strong showing in the mainstream media. While late night talk shows aren’t exactly the best place to get information, they are a good reflection on cultural trends. Putting out the pro-vaccine message on science blogs and even in the news media is great and should be encouraged. However, it is a huge step when it starts to enter more of our culture and media.

Ridicule is also a important weapon in opposing anti-science rhetoric and quackery. There is nothing wrong with calling an idea stupid when it is, in fact, stupid, and sometimes putting it in its place with appropriate ridicule is the best way of driving the point home. There’s also good reason why humor is used in so many advertisements. Humor gets people’s attention and helps make the message memorable.

The idea behind it is basically that family members having a dispute, which involves a deceased person, consult a psychic to talk to that dead person about how to deal with the situation. Of course, it’s not terribly unusual for disputes and disagreements to come up over things like estate matters or how to best serve the wishes of a deceased person. So why not consult a psychic? Well, if you’re going to try to resolve a dispute, you probably want a mediator who is actually honest and has some integrity. Psychics, on the other hand, are professional liars. Even worse, the ones in this series don’t seem to even be that good at it.

Seriously, I can do better at cold reading than this!
