With the constant innovations of advertising in new media, it's easy to forget the tried and true forms of advertising that once dominated media buys. The old fashioned billboard tends to be plastered with text and ugly graphics, but there are pioneers who are pushing the limits of a once conservative business. Billboards can do something even the most complicated online display advertising can – and that's break through the boundaries and become truly interactive with the real world. There's something about the tactile nature of this kind of ad that impels one to talk about it with friends.

Sometimes it's not what's on the billboard, but rather how empty space is used. Removing part of a billboard to make a point is wonderful because it's both eye catching, and shows that the advertiser took the time to study the environment the billboard would inhabit, and stylized it to interact uniquely.

It's amazing what you can do with a simple rectangle, and bringing in a little creativity with shape and texture can make a typically two dimensional ad medium really pop out. People expect something from a boring billboard, so it's great when those expectations are ruined.

Bloom supermarkets have pioneered the most interactive billboards yet, by creating two different billboards that emit smells into the surrounding area. The first such billboard wafted steak scents for passing motorists, and the second incorporated a fallen muffin and wonderful blueberry muffin smells.

Interview With Digital Artist Ferdi Rizkiyanto aka Pepey

Today's interview is with Indonesia based Graphic Designer Ferdi Rizkiyanto, also known as Pepey. You probably remember him for one of his more popular photo-manipulations, a PSA demonstrating the threat of Global Warming. Ferdi's graphic design work is amazing and has exceptional attention to detail.

Lets start with an introduction. Could you tell us about yourself, where you're from and how you got started in the design field?

My real name is Ferdi Rizkiyanto, I'm from Jakarta – Indonesia, when I was in high school my older brother introduced me with Adobe Illustrator & Adobe Photoshop, then when I was in college, got myself in-love with 3D software such as Poser and Bryce for quite a while.

I've seen that many of your designs use 3D in combination with lighting effects, is there any particular reason?

When I was still hooked with 3D I've always interested how to make a realistic CG artwork, and lighting fx is one of the most important essence to do it. And now I use that reference every time I need it with my concept.

What would you say have been some of your strongest influences as a designer and digital artist?

since I just a kid, I always admire and inspired by sci-fi, horror and superheroes stories, it's amazing how they can make fiction into something that look so real and believable.

Were there any barriers you've had to overcome in entering the field and trying to develop as an artist?

Well, it's a tough and fast world out there, the only barrier is myself, if I want to keep up with it, I'll just have to keep upgrading my skill, keep trying to push myself to be better and keep learning new things.

What would you say is the largest difficulty you've encountered when working on a design, and how did you overcome it?

Sometimes it's hard to get an idea or inspiration to visualize the message that I want to deliver, usually I just began to do more research about it and hopefully gonna get inspired on the process.

What has been your most valuable resources as a designer?

The Internet, it's the never-ending resource of knowledge and inspiration, from the most basic design tutorial to the "out of the world" inspiration are there.

What would you say is the hardest part of being a designer?

For me, there is no hardest part if you love what you do, every obstacles is a whole new adventure that I have to overcome, and in the end I'll have a valuable experience by going through it

Are there any other designers or artist that you draw inspiration or advice from?

So far what would you say is your favorite piece you've that you have created, and why?

The Global Warming PSA – Time
Beside the message itself, the design process of that particular piece really helped me to upgrade my skill and sharpen my attention to detail.

If you could use design to influence or change the world in a positive way, how would you go about it?

If I could use it, then I'll do it by making everyone to take their part and responsibilities to help stop any more damage that has been done to our beautiful planet.

What do you hope to achieve design wise in the next 5 years?

Really don't know what to answer/hope for, I guess we'll just have to wait and see

Using Spot UV on Business Cards Plus 15 Must-See Examples

Spot UV (ultra violet) is a technique in printing where spots or particular portions of a business card or any other print materials like brochure, flier, book cover, etc. are treated with glossy coating. The Spot UV does not affect the color of the graphics or texts that are being treated color. Instead, this process only makes that particular portion slightly raised and shiny relative to the non-glossy business card stock. For example, if you want to put a spot UV coating on your logo, the color of the logo does not change when treated but will only become shiny and slightly raised. Spot UV is less complicated than other processes such as embossing where alignment must be very concise. With Spot UV, the application of the gloss can be lined up precisely against any ink-based design element, no matter how complicated your graphic elements are.

Since you actually make the spot glossy or shiny in this process, it only means that spot UV only works on silk or matt laminate and other non-glossy card stock. Putting a spot UV on a glossy card stock will not have a visible effect since everything is already glossy. To demonstrate how spot UV looks like when applied to silk and matt laminate card stock, here are 15 must-see examples of business cards with spot UV finishing.

[News] Pasar Seni ITB 2010 ; Mengingatkan yang Terlupakan

Pada tahun 1972, A.D Pirous menggelar perhelatan Pasar Seni ITB pertama di Bandung, dengan tujuan mendekatkan karya seni dengan masyarakat dan di pasar seni inilah masyarakat bisa mendapatkan karya seni dengan harga yang relatif murah.

Tanggal 10 bulan 10 tahun 2010 FSRD ITB menggelar perhelatan Pasar Seni ITB ke-10 yang berlangsung selama 10 jam. Acara yang dibuka oleh Menteri Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata Jero Wacik ini, secara resmi dibuka pukul 09.00 WIB. Jero Wacik mengatakan, festival merupakan aktualisasi kebudayaan jati diri bangsa. “Hidup ini jangan habis waktu untuk memikirkan ekonomi atau politik saja. Politik dan ekonomi memang penting, tetapi dengan seni Negara bisa bersatu”, ujarnya.

Dengan mengusung tema “Mengingatkan yang Terlupakan”, Pasar Seni ITB bukan sekedar ajang hiburan, ia sesungguhnya menangkap Zeitgeist (semangat zaman) dari masyarakat dewasa ini. Tujuan paling tinggi dari helaran tersebut adalah munculnya makna dan perubahan ke depan, dengan menampilkan berbagai wahana dengan berbagai tema.

Sekitar 40 stand seniman yang menampilkan berbagai karya mereka, 28 stand delegasi dari berbagai institut/universitas/sekolah desain dan seni dan komunitas, 195 stand produk yang menawarkan karya-karya unik yang hanya bisa didapatkan di pasar seni ITB. Tidak akan lengkap tentunya apabila sebuah perhelatan sebuah acara tanpa adanya zona makanan, untuk itulah di pasar seni kali ini menyediakan 78 stand makanan dan minuman. Untuk souvenir asli pasar seni, panitia juga menyediakan stand souvenir yang sayang untuk tidak dikoleksi.

Dengan persiapan teknis selama 3 bulan dan pematangan konsep serta materi selama kurang lebih 2 tahun, diharapkan tema yang diusung Pasar Seni ITB 2010 ini mampu diterima masyarakat. Menggabungkan teknologi, sains dan tradisi diharapkan pengunjung mampu mengingat apa yang terlupakan.

Salah satunya adalah wahana Jamming, dimana teknologi mulai mempengaruhi pola interaksi manusia yang cenderung individualistis. Di wahana ini, setiap pengunjung yang melewati area tersebut akan kehilangan sinyal telepon seluler. Filosofinya adalah, saat ini kegiatan seperti silaturahmi, komunikasi tatap muka mulai jarang dilakukan dikarenakan perkembangan teknologi. Dengan hilangnya sinyal semua operator telepon seluler, maka tiap orang akan kembali ke hakikat awalnya sebagai makhluk sosial yang saling bertegur sapa, tatap muka atau minimal saling tersenyum.

Sementara Wahana sawah mencoba mengingatkan apa yang terlupakan oleh kita, yaitu bahwa Negara kita adalah Negara agraris, dimana sawah adalah penyambung kehidupan jutaan masyarakat Indonesia. Menggunakan teknologi menanam padi mutakhir yang disebut SRI (System of Rice Intensification), sawah modern ini bahkan bisa dibawa kemana-mana.

Sementara itu Wakil Walikota Bandung Ayi Vivananda menuturkan, kegiatan ini merupakan salah satu ikon Kota Bandung. Diharapkan kegiatan ini dapat berlangsung secara berkesinambungan karena kegiatan ini merupakan salah satu wujud perkembangan industri kreatif di Kota Bandung.[]

the seto inland sea of japan has been an important nexus of transportation. boats from the mainland have
come and gone, bringing new cultures and lifestyles to the islands which dot the sea. since then,
each island has formed its own culture. however, globalization and increased homogenization has caused
the islands to slowly lose their characteristics due to the aging and decreasing population of the islands.

setouchi international art festival 2010 aims to bring vitality back to the islands of the area.
the event features the work of 75 artists, from 18 countries and regions who bring forth new discoveries in the
workings of our daily life. the islands have become the stages, through which elements of life related to art,
focusing on the islands' lifestyles and history, are exhibited.

'net-work'

suh do ho has created 'net-work', a system of tunnels covered in fishing nets near the dobuchi strait,
angel road and the beach near tomioka hachiman shrine. at first glance, there appears to be fish drying in the nets,
but upon closer observation, the installation reveals that they are spread-eagled human figures connected at the
hands and feet.

'a town between the sky and the sea'

'a town between the sky and the sea' by nakanishi nakai (architect hiromu nakanishi and landscape designer takeo nakai)
is a reproduction of the landscape of ogijima. built against a stonewalled lane overlooking the sea,
meant to representa gorge, the duo has created a microcosm, one-eighth its actual size.

rikuji makabe has created 'project for wall paintings in lane, ogijima wall alley', a series of site-specific
installations on various buildings located throughout the ogijima village. the wall murals are
constructed from scraps of wood, materials discarded from ships etc., each of the panels are affixed to
the exterior walls of the island homes in strategic locations so that the murals become part of the island scenery.

hiroshi sugimoto
'go'o shrine / appropriate proportion'

for his contribuation to the festival, hiroshi sugimoto has restored the sanctuary and designed a new
worship hall for an existing shrine in naoshima. entitled 'go'o shrine / appropriate proportion',
a glass staircase connects the shrine's main building to an underground stone chamber.

takashi nishibori
'uchiwa bone house'

for 'uchiwa bone house', takashi nishibori focuses on the traditional kagawa handicraft of the uchiwa fan.
utilizing the bamboo frames of numerous fans, he explores light and wind, inside and outside, island life and scenery,
the relationship between tradition and the present.

takeshi kawashima & dream friends
'memory drops'

'memory drops' by takeshi kawashima & dream friends, are colorful, spherical works predominantly constructed
from flyers, magazines, old newspapers and wrapping paper. some drops are made with the islanders
out of their letters, diaries and other papers crammed with precious memories. installed within the entrance,
corridors, walls and under the eaves of the exhibition space, visitors are invited to make their own memory drops,
some of which will be added to the installation as the festival progresses.

takashi imura
'karakurin'

takashi imura is an artist known for his 'karakurin', imaginary sea creatures made from copper and bronze.
on the island of ogijima, a number of these mechanical objects are hung at madoka, a restaurant that serves
cuisine made from local seafood. by displaying these creatures in this location - by the windows and on the terrace -
the 'karakurin' fuse with the scenery of the seaport.

kyoko taniyama
'rainy lane'

kyoko taniyama's 'rainy lane' consists of washbasins and buckets which have been hung,
periodically releasing a shower of water, making it look like its raining, even on a sunny day. in the past,
water was so scare on ogijima, that islanders had to haul it from a well at the top of the hill.
taniyama's installation reminds us of the importance of water and its relation to island life.

yodogawa-technique
'black porgy in uno'

yodogawa-technique's (hideaki shibata + kazuya matsunaga) 'black porgy in uno' is a giant, life-like fish
built from flotsam and jetsam, washed up on the shores along the seto inland sea. much of the garbage collected
not only originated in japan, but also in other parts of the world.

takahito kimura
'sea gull's parking lot'

'sea gull's parking lot' responds to its site location which is fishing port. takahito kimura has placed a host of
weathercocks here, so that when the wind blows in from the sea, they all turn simultaneously, giving the
invisible wind a visible form. the work is mean to bring visitors' attention to the natural phenomena that
surrounds the island.

noboru tsubaki
'project for sea-light in takamatsu'

for the festival, various local groups, working under the direction of noboru tsubaki, are collaborating
to create large illuminated sculptures, some which appear as mythical creatures, situated in central takamatsu
near the island's station and port.

mariko mori
'tom na h-iu'

in ancient celtic lore 'tom na h-iu' was a place where souls waited to pass on to their next life. drawn to this myth,
mariko mori has developed a contemporary glass monument. networked to the super-kamioka neutrino detection experiment,
her work responds when the local observatory captures a neutrino, such as those emitted by a dying star.
when a neutrino is detected, the work emits a luminous light.

shinji ohmaki
'liminal air- core-'

shinji ohmaki's installation 'liminal air- core-' consists of pillars with mirrored surfaces that capture the
changes that occur in light and color throughout the day. their appearance alters, depending on the angle and
time of day in which they are viewed. their location serves as a gateway to the world of takamatsu's port'

yoshihiro suda
'gokaisho'

the name of the site, 'gokaisho', is derived from the fact that local villagers used to gather here to play 'go',
an ancient board game. the art space's interior is strewn with yoshihiro suda's camellia blossoms which have been

carved from wood, paralleling the five-hued flowers of the camellia tree that is planed in the site's garden.

Sinergi Desain & Konten

Inti dari blog memang ada pada konten blog itu sendiri, tetapi seperti diskusi kita terdahulu, konten yang bagus jika tidak didukung dengan desain yang efektif maka tidak akan berhasil. Sebagian mungkin bisa bertahan karena faktor senioritas atau konten yang tidak dapat di temukan di blog lain. Tapi bagaimana dengan blogger junior yang walaupun mempunyai konten yang bagus tetapi kurang/belum memperhatikan desain blognya sendiri?

Lagipula, apa salahnya memanjakan pembaca dengan presentasi desain yang nikmat di mata? Selain membuat pembaca lebih betah berlama-lama di blog kita, manfaat lain tentu membuat pesan yang ingin kita sampaikan lebih mudah di tangkap.

Berikut adalah beberapa poin/tips yang bisa di gunakan untuk membuat desain blog menjadi lebih efektif.

Tata Letak Kolom Konten

Dari hasil pengamatan saya, ada 5 macam jenis tata letak kolom yang sering digunakan pada desain blog. Masing-masing tata letak mempunyai kelebihan dan kekurangan, namun kita bisa menentukan yang terbaik bagi keperluan blog yang akan kita desain.

1. Menurun Single (1 kolom)

Jenis ini merupakan tata letak yang standard dan hampir semua blog menggunakan metode ini. Dikarenakan sistem dokumentasi dan penanggalan blog yang berdasarkan hari, maka posting terbaru akan di letakkan di paling atas.

Kelebihan :

Pembaca sudah familiar dengan tata letak ini
Mudah menemukan posting terbaru
Ruang untuk konten lumayan luas

Kekurangan :

Dari segi visual terlihat biasa saja
Pembaca akan mengalami sedikit kesulitan bila ingin melihat posting terdahulu

2. Menurun Paralel (2 kolom)

Sama dengan tipe menurun yang pertama, perbedaannya hanya pada kolom konten yang di bagi menjadi 2, sehingga dapat memuat lebih banyak konten di dalam satu halaman.

Kelebihan :

Pembaca dapat dengan mudah melihat beberapa posting terbaru
Memberikan pilihan kepada pembaca
Blog terasa lebih kaya akan konten

Kekurangan :

Layout secara keseluruhan akan terlihat penuh
Kalau pengaturan masing-masing kolom tidak di perhatikan (tinggi kolom), akan terlihat berantakan
Beberapa pembaca akan bingung mana yang mau di baca terlebih dulu

3. Grid (4-6 kolom)

Sesuai dengan namanya, tata letak ini menggunakan sistem grid untuk mengatur tata letak kolom kontennya. Desainer bebas menentukan akan menggunakan berapa kolom, tergantung dengan kebutuhan dan jenis konten (lebih banyak gambar atau tulisan).

Kelebihan :

Secara visual terlihat menarik
Semua posting dapat tampil dalam satu halaman

Kekurangan :

Akan membingungkan pembaca
Dari sisi layout ada kemungkinan akan terlihat berantakan

4. Full Width

Tipe yang satu ini tidak menggunakan kolom, tetapi menggunakan seluruh lebar halaman yang ada. Bahkan bagian sidebar kanan atau kiri tidak di gunakan, namun ada juga beberapa yang tetap menggunakan sidebar tetapi dengan porsi yang sangat minim.

Kelebihan :

Konten menjadi sorotan utama
Terlihat unik karena belum banyak yang menggunakan
Lebih nyaman di baca
Pembaca akan fokus kepada posting tanpa ada gangguan banner atau widget lain

Kekurangan :

Terlihat “sepi”
Agak sulit menampilkan posting-posting sebelumnya
Butuh strategi khusus untuk menempatkan banner iklan atau widget lain

5. Custom Posting

Kalau kamu mempunyai keahlian di bidang coding, pilihan ini mungkin bisa kamu pertimbangkan. Tipe ini merupakan tipe “break the rules” karena sama sekali tidak menggunakan template yang sama pada setiap posting. Melainkan menyesuaikan desain dengan konten dalam arti yang sebenarnya. Konsep nya sama seperti majalah yang melayout setiap artikel nya secara personal.

Kelebihan :

Sudah pasti terlihat unik

Konten adalah jiwa dari sebuah blog karenanya kita harus memperhatikan cara kita menggunakan dan menampilkan text dengan baik. Tujuannya tak lain adalah agar nyaman di baca. Berikut ini beberapa hal yang harus di perhatikan,

1. Jenis Font

Di dalam blog pasti ada 2 jenis font yang harus di gunakan, yang satu sebagai heading, dan yang lain sebagai body text. Untuk bagian heading kita bisa menggunakan font yang jarang di pakai oleh desainer lain atau disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan dasar headline itu sendiri, yaitu untuk menjadi pusat perhatian.

Pada bagian heading kamu bisa menggunakan font yang tebal atau mencari font dengan bentuk yang unik (namun tetap terbaca). Penggunaan font yang tidak biasa pada heading juga bisa menjadi pembetukan karakter desain sebuah blog.

Yang kedua adalah font untuk body text. Di bagian ini sebaiknya kita menggunakan font standard yang memang di fungsikan untuk body text, alasan utamanya adalah agar text dapat di tampilkan dengan baik di semua monitor pembaca.

2. Ukuran Font

Yang akan lebih di bahas di sini adalah ukuran font pada body text. Karena perkembangan resolusi monitor saat ini, ukuran 12 point adalah ukuran standard. Tapi kalau kamu mau lebih meningkatkan kenyamanan dalam membaca bisa menggunakan 14 – 16 point, ukuran ini tergantung kepada jenis font yang kamu gunakan.

3. Line Spacing

Bagian ini sangat kecil, namun penting untuk menjaga kenyamanan saat kita membaca artikel. Rumus yang biasa di gunakan adalah besar font yang di gunakan, di tambah 4 point. Misalnya, kamu menggunakan font 14 point, maka line spacing yang ideal adalah 18 point.

Namun pengaturan line spacing harus di coba secara langsung, terkadang bisa juga line spacing 20 point (dengan besar font 14 point) lebih nyaman di baca karena bentuk dan jenis font juga mempengaruhi.

Desain Header & Logo

Sesimpel apapun desain header dan logo yang kamu buat haruslah menarik. Ibaratnya, header dan logo adalah wajah seseorang. Karena ini desain untuk blog, maka logo mungkin tidak menjadi keharusan, tetapi akan lebih baik jika kamu mempunyai logo walaupun hanya berbentuk tipografi (logotype). Desain logo yang unik akan menjadi identitas blog.

Desain header dapat disesuaikan dengan “feel” keseluruhan blog yang ingin kamu dapatkan. Kamu bisa bereksplorasi dengan ilustrasi, texture, atau bahkan bermain dengan white space.

Styling Image

Sebenarnya trik ini sangat simpel, hanya menambahkan border di sekitar image/photo yang kita gunakan pada posting. Dengan cara ini image akan tampil lebih menarik walaupun efek nya tidak terlalu terlihat. Akan terasa perbedaanya antara yang menggunakan dan tidak menggunakan styling image.

Mayoritas blog mempunyai sidebar, tapi terkadang kita suka bingung ingin menaruh fitur/widget apa di bagian ini. Sebelum kamu menambahkan widget dengan membabi buta, lebih baik pikirkan dulu hal selain konten yang ingin kamu sampaikan kepada pembaca.

Yang pasti footer bukan lagi ruang yang di anak-tiri kan lagi, malah bisa mendukung keseluruhan konten blog.

[Tutorial] Membuat Efek Embun di Photoshop

Efek embun sangat mudah di buat di Photoshop, hanya perlu menggunakan satu teknik (yaitu teknik masking) dan kesabaran untuk mendapatkan hasil yang mendekati realistis.

Sebelum memulai saya mau meminta maaf karena tidak sempat menulis artikel baru selama bulan April kemarin di karenakan kesibukan pekerjaan (cliche but true! ). Tapi mulai sekarang saya berkomitmen untuk menjadikan Jurus Grafis sebagai projek juga sehingga frekuensi posting tetap dapat terpenuhi.

Ok, cukup basa basi nya, kita akan mulai membuat efek embun di Photoshop. Materi yang di perlukan adalah gambar kaleng minuman bersoda (atau gambar apa saja yang kamu mau), bisa di unduh di tautan ini.

Langkah 1

Buka gambar kaleng yang sudah di unduh tadi di Photoshop.

Langkah 2

Gunakan Pen Tool (P) berwarna putih untuk menggambar embun. Bentuk embun tidak beraturan tetapi tetap ada unsur lingkaran, jadi kamu bisa bebas menentukan bentuk embun yang kamu inginkan.

Langkah 3

Di tahap inilah efek embun akan di hasilkan. Gunakan teknik masking pada bentuk embun yang baru kita buat tadi.

Langkah 4

Gunakan Soft Brush pada bagian tengah bentuk embun, sehingga akan di hasilkan efek transparan, jangan lupa juga untuk menurunkan Opacity Brush nya supaya efek transparan yang di hasilkan lebih lembut.

Kunci langkah ini adalah eksperimen, sekaligus melatih feeling kita untuk menghasilkan efek yang sesuai seperti embun asli.

Ulangi langkah 2 sampai langkah 4 untuk membuat embun yang lain. Atau kamu bisa menduplikasi embun yang sudah ada dan merubah bentuk nya dengan Transform Tool (Ctrl + T).

The Citrange is a hand squeezer for the citrus fruits in your life. The unique funnel design makes it feel that the juice is going to spill out of the glass; but it does not. The double-grooves design allows you to squeeze the wide (like an orange) to the narrow (like a lime) fruit from either ends of the juicer. I like the fact that a strainer is built-in and the overall procedure cuts back one whole step in juice-squeezing. Ok, I love it!

The future iPhone is here or at least in conceptual form. Given that size, design and features need to be drastically innovated, the NOT A Phone – Next Generation iPhone, delves into the projection arena. So basically you strap the next-gen iPhone to your wrist and project the display to your palm. You can figure out rest of the drill from the images, so my question to you today is….are we in for projection screens for phones? Is that the future of phone display, have a basic small screen and project the rest of it?

[News] 10 Amazing Light Graffiti Artists and Photographers: From Light Writing to Extreme Exposures

Light graffiti, also known as light painting, takes what you think you know about graffiti and turns it on its head. This ephemeral approach to art and expression uses the movement of light to create incredible images and is created on the streets, in nature, and in studios by artists whose creative impulses transcend traditional media. Unlike projection bombing, light graffiti is sometimes produced as performance art, and sometimes just to capture it with photography and video, but either way it makes for some incredible viewing. These ten artists producing light graffiti and light painting represent some of the most amazing talent in a growing (and increasingly strange) field of art.
Michael Bosanko
Michael Bosanko is a photographer who's taken on light painting in a series called "We Come in Peace", in which figures made of light seem to interact with their surroundings in a way that's comical, fun and highly engaging. The series features giant spiders crawling down a highway, "alien" rocks gathering around a central "spaceship", a light figure skateboarding on a ramp and another hitchhiking on the side of a road.
Patrick Rochon
Patrick Rochon creates stunning images by moving light through various media and capturing the movement with photography and video. Patrick's light painting is unique even among a field of very innovative artists, using lasers to illuminate his subjects in ways that create an eerie, otherwordly feel in the finished portraits. Patrick has also taken light painting to a whole new level by building costumes of lights and performing light painting on a giant screen to create a unique visual experience.
LICHTFAKTOR
The German group Lichtfaktor has produced some of the best-known light graffiti, transforming everyday objects like trash cans, phone booths and street signs into live creatures that wave their arms around and seem to spring forth from the street. Comprised of Marcel Panne, David L'pschen and Tim Fehske, Lichtfaktor combines talents like graphic design, video mixing and photography to craft series of images and videos for companies like Absolut Vodka, Audi, Sprint and Playstation.
Cenci Goepel and Jens Warnecke
German duo Cenci Goepel and Jens Warnecke create stark imagery that brings a ghostly quality to the beauty of nature, turning striking natural settings into backdrops for glowing organic forms made of moving light. Their subtle use of light painting in deserts, canyons, forests and snow-covered fjords makes the illuminated forms seem to blend in with their backgrounds in a way that brings to mind alien landscapes on some far away planet.
Eric Staller
Eric Staller`s light drawings, created between 1976 and 1980 in New York City, give the viewer a whole new look at the Big Apple. These examples of light graffiti were created using a long exposure with a variety of light sources, sometimes in the form of 3-dimensional lit installations. His photographs seem to give the light itself a life of its own, as it travels through the city creating whimsical shapes down its streets and walkways.
Ryan Warnberg and Michelle McSwain (MRI)
Queens, NY light painters Ryan Warnberg and Michelle McSwain are collectively known as MRI, a group that creates light paintings for hire. MRI's fun brand of light painting can be commissioned for parties, ad campaigns and special events, and they bring all of their own equipment. MRI creates "kaleidoscopic" images that invoke old portraits of religious figures, but with a decidedly modern twist.
Sola
Sola is a UK photographer whose experiments with the flow, form and movement of light are captured in two series, "Embro" and "Solid Trace". Embro, defined by the artist as "Echoes of the organic world translated into a synthetic language", seems to explore how light captured in a photograph can seem just as organic as anything else around us. "Solid Trace", which the artist calls "An exploration of movement and form in contrastingly stark environments" portrays vibrant swirls of colored light on urban backdrops.
Alan Jaras
Alan Jaras creates his stunning images by passing streams of light through molded and textured plastic, for a "refracted" effect that is unlike any other light painter's work. Colored dyes are added to the plastic shape, and the shape is placed in front of the camera in lieu of a lens to be directly captured on 35mm film for an incredibly unique and organic result.
Dean Chamberlain
Dean Chamberlain takes portraiture to new heights with his pioneering light painting technique, which he developed in 1977. Renowned for his "Psychedelic Pioneers" series among other work, Chamberlain creates these images using extremely long exposures in sessions that can last as long as five hours. He uses a flashlight and colored gels to illuminate each individual element in a composition.
Toby Keller
Toby Keller of Burn Blue Photography in Design has created a series of light painting images in which the free-flowing forms of light seem to have no rhyme or reason – and they don't have to. Keller takes what would already be beautiful nature photography and makes it seem to crackle with kinetic energy as ribbons of glowing light swirl around groups of rocks by the sea. [News] Paint Your Wagons: The Many Colors Of Cadillac Ranch

Who's your Caddy? The 10 graffiti-encrusted art car Cadillacs that make up Cadillac Ranch, just outside of Amarillo, Texas, have left their highway cruising days far behind. In fact, their behinds are all that's visible now that they've been angled, grill-first, into the fertile soil of the Texas panhandle.

Driving down Interstate 40 just outside of Amarillo, Texas, windows rolled up against the dust of the wide, flat Texas Panhandle, a curious sight breaks the monotony of the dun-colored plains. From a distance one is reminded of the canted smokestacks of the doomed ocean liner Titanic, save for the fact that there are ten funnels instead of four.

The objects are finally revealed to be a row of cars, Cadillacs at that, each one angled into the rich prairie soil as if an Olympian giant had used them for javelin practice.

If you're like a lot of people, you'll pull off the highway and park. An open gate beckons… Congratulations, you've arrived at what may be the world's most unusual public art exhibit, Cadillac Ranch: ten classic, fin-tastic Caddies "justa gleaming in the sun", each one defiantly scratching at the bright blue Texas sky with its audacious, outrageous tail fins. If your timing is right, the cars themselves might be carrying a complementary coat of sky blue paint.

Nearly every square inch of each individual car is covered with graffiti. "Be sure to take your paint spray cans with you," advises a member of Ant Farm (the artwork's creators), "as the purpose of this monument is to let the audience participate in it. You can simply write down your name, or if you have an inspiring message, leave it on one of the cars for the other visitors to read or to erase."

Every so often the cars are painted over, in effect becoming a blank 10-piece canvas that soon becomes filled once more and the cycle then repeats. The cars have been painted pink twice – once (in eye-blasting pink camouflage) as part of a 2005 breast cancer awareness campaign called Operation Pink Flamingo and on another occasion to mark the birthday of Wendy, wife of Cadillac Ranch's owner and patron, Stanley Marsh 3.

The cars were painted white at one point at the request of an advertiser who wanted to feature a ghostly, whited-out Cadillac Ranch in a TV commercial. One can imagine how quickly and eagerly graffiti artists descended upon the immaculate white cars once the shooting officially ended!

In May of 2002, Ant Farm decided to restore the cars to their original colors though the broken windows, stolen chrome trim and even a few pilfered body panels were not repaired nor replaced. The restoration was in conjunction with a Route 66 related refurbishment project sponsored by Hampton Inns: within 24 hours fresh graffiti began to appear on the cars.

On a sad note, all 10 cars were painted matte black in June of 2003 as a homage to the passing away of one of Ant Farm's founding members, Doug Michels.

There is ongoing maintenance at the Ranch, performed by remaining original Ant Farm artists Chip Lord and Hudson Marquez. From its inception in 1974 Cadillac Ranch has been very much a work in progress, unlike other roadside attractions like the "World's Biggest Ball of Twine" or what have you. Public interaction doesn't affect the message Ant Farm sought to proclaim when they built the Ranch, which is to pay tribute to America's love affair with the automobile and illustrate the way it symbolizes our contradictory desires for freedom on the one hand; to be rooted in one place on the other. With every red-blooded American in mind, here above are the cars painted in rich hemoglobin red.

Ten ultimate rewards of the American Dream are rooted, all right – buried to the waist in several feet of rich Texas topsoil. Yet all is not as it seems. There's a method to what some have called madness, and a close look at the actual sculpture reveals order emerging from chaos. For one thing, the model years of the individual cars run in sequence as follows: 1949, 1950, 1954, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1962 and finally 1963.

When painted up in a monotone hue like New York City Taxi yellow, the differences in fin styling are more readily visible (plus the graffiti contrasts extra-nicely!).

The model years of the participating automobiles were specifically selected to show the rise and fall of the trademark Caddy tail fin, skipping years in which little or no changes were made. It should also be noted that not only are the cars positioned in a straight line, each one is tilted at a common angle matching that of the Great Pyramid of Giza… sounds like somebody's in de Nile.

Like other artists before them, Ant Farm needed the support of a patron who would help bring the concept and inspiration behind Cadillac Ranch to fruition. Enter Stanley Marsh 3, a Texas millionaire who, like many others in the state, made his fortune in the oil bidness. The "3â€³ isn't a typo: Marsh believes adding the Roman numeral III to his name would be somewhat pretentious.

Marsh was (and still is) an eccentric Amarillan who loves practical jokes and resides with wife Wendy in a rambling pile named Toad Hall. In 1973 Marsh, whose attitude towards art is that it's "a legalized form of insanity, and I do it very well", invited Ant Farm to submit proposals for a monumental project. Upon meeting and talking with the artists, Marsh exclaimed, "I like Ant Farm. It is a wholesome group. If you would like to do something here on my ranch, well, just make me a proposal. If I like it, we will do it!"

Evidently Marsh liked what he heard. Throughout the spring of 1974, the members of Ant Farm prowled the used car lots of Amarillo and environs, buying up a small fleet of tired old Caddies and driving them back to a wheat field just off historic Route 66. One by one, the cars were literally driven into the ground, their resting angle aligned and adjusted. Finally the earth was packed down solid, suspending each vehicle between earth and sky.

After the final car (a tough to find, salmon pink, 1957 Sedan de Ville) was planted on June 21, 1974, Marsh held an outdoor party at the site complete with a catered bar and highlighted by the champagne-bottle christening of the first car in line, a silver 1949 Club Coupe. It was a rare occasion for autos and alcohol to mix but hey – there's only one Cadillac Ranch. Patron, artists and 200 guests converged on Cadillac Ranch on June 21, 1994 for the 20th anniversary of the opening and posed for the photo above.

35 years after its creation, Cadillac Ranch has established itself as an icon of American pop culture. Most of those who've seen the Pixar animated film Cars didn't need any explanation when the "Cadillac Range" appeared on screen, and Ant Farm's art car extravaganza has garnered a host of tributes, homages and out & out imitations in advertising media and the real world.

Cadillac Ranch has proven to be both an inspiration and a challenge to photographers of all types, due to the often harsh lighting and the number of visitors who visit this always open, open-air public artwork. Even so, this challenge has been taken up and to our great delight, met with outstanding success.

On a moonlit night with the prairie wind a-blowing and with no one for company but the tumbling tumbleweeds and the cries of the coyotes, Cadillac Ranch takes on an eerie, almost otherworldly atmosphere. Sound inspiring? Ask Bruce (The Boss) Springsteen. He paid a visit in 1979 between tour stops, then recorded "Cadillac Ranch" for his 1980 album The River. Mosey on out to the Ranch sometime… you might get inspired too!
