Online Guide for Therapy Activities

As Spring break draws to an end, many speech-language pathologists and speech-language pathology graduate students are gearing up to return to clinic. It is likely that not too much time has been spent in the past week developing therapy treatment plans or even thinking about what will be done in your sessions. I am in the same boat and because of this have spent just a little bit of time this cold, snowy afternoon looking for online resources. I have come across this great page, created by Judith Maginnis Kuster, that nicely outlines links to interactive-online activities as well as those websites that have reproducibles that can be used in therapy and later sent home for continued practice. GloDoodle: Cool Toy for Therapy

During a home visit this morning, I was turned on to a cool new toy that can be used with most any age child with practically any developmental need. The GloDoodle, produced by Glopad, is a very portable, very clean, and very fun toy that inspires creative play and artistic expression in children. This toy is similar to other magnetic based drawing toys that allow children to create unique designs with a stylus and then to erase, but the cool thing about the GloDoodle is that it is transparent, you can draw/trace in three different colors, and you can even use your hands! The manufacturer recommends this toy to be utilized with children ages 3 and up due to choking hazzard of small parts.

From a therapeutic standpoint, this toy can be used as a visual manipulative to address articulation development, it could be used a method of language stimulation, and due to its transparency and colorful output it could be utilized in sessions with children who do not otherwise make eye contact.

Dear Colleague:

Attached you will find a copy of a Call for Posters for the 2010 conference of the Oklahoma Speech-Language-Hearing Association OSHA which will be held Thursday, September 30th and Friday, October 1st, 2010 at the Renaissance Hotel in Tulsa, OK.It is a “Call for Posters” and NOT a “Call for Papers” because at the 1st meeting of the OSHA Program Committee, is became apparent there were so many outstanding invited speakers and such a full program already in the works there was little available time left for including submitted presentations. The committee felt strongly about the need to allow participation by our own body of skilled professionals and future professionals in training, and felt poster presentations would allow the greatest opportunity to demonstrate more of the association’s skill and expertise in the limited time available. We hope that you will read the attached Call for Posters carefully and submit your proposals prior to the indicated deadline. Submit by April 20, 2010. All submissions must be received no later than April 30, 2010. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by mid-June. Late entries will not be considered by the program committee.University faculty please encourage your students to participate and post this call for papers for both students and professionals!

BOARD OF EXAMINERS BALLOT DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 22 2010

Dear Speech Pathologists and Audiologists,

As a service to the state, the Oklahoma Speech-Language and Hearing Association is taking a survey of licensed speech pathologists and audiologists to obtain five names to submit as possible gubernatorial appointees for Oklahoma Board of Examiners for Speech-language Pathology and Audiology (OBESPA). As you may know, the process is this: Every year, one member goes off and one replaces him/her on the Oklahoma Board of Examiners for Speech Pathology and Audiology. This year, audiologist Dr. Steven Painton is going off the Board and so we will survey for submissions of up to ten audiologists' names. Please nominate (up to ten) audiologists from the list of licensed audiologists in Oklahoma provided as part of this survey. Your deadline to turn in your names is FEBRUARY 22, 2010. Your nominations will be tallied by OSHA's Nominations Committee into the five top vote-holders, and we'll contact them to assure their willingness to serve if chosen. Governor Brad Henry will make the final selection from that list of five names. The members do not need to be members of the Oklahoma Speech-Language and Hearing Association. If you have questions or comments on this process, please feel free to contact me.
