School is out for summer and you have almost 3 months to keep your kids cool and entertained.  I pulled together a list of 10 fun things to do in Tucson. I tried to keep the activities as frugal as possible since I know most people are on a budget.  Check out my list of 10 “Cool” Tucson Staycation ideas – What to do in Tucson during the summer!

10 Cool Tucson Staycation ideas

Brandi Fenton Splash Pad

The Brandi Fenton Splash Pad is a great place for FREE water fun with spray arches, water geysers and other water features. Open 7am to 7pm daily through October 31st!

Oro Valley Aquatic Center

The newly renovated Oro Valley Aquatic Center features a huge water slide, interactive splash pad, and recreation pool. The pools are heated making it a year-round facility.  Regular admission is $7 for adults, $5 for kids (4-17) and free for kiddos 3 and under.

Kids Summer Movie Programs

One of the best places to cool off in the extreme heat of the summer is the movie theater!  There are seven movie theaters in Tucson offering kids summer movie programs which means it’s easy to catch a cheap, kid friendly movie.

Mount Lemon

Cool off during the summer with a visit to Mount Lemmon, where the weather averages 30 degrees cooler! Hike and enjoy the beautiful surroundings for free! You can grab a bite to eat at the top of the mountain in the small community of Summerhaven. The Ski Valley ski lift operates during the summer for a unique way to see the panoramic views of Tucson! Adult tickets are $9, youth tickets are $7, and child tickets are $5.

Bisbee – Queen Mine Tour

Another fun way to beat the heat is to head underground in Bisbee, Arizona. The Queen Mine in Bisbee is an easy day trip from Tucson and it will definitely cool you down, the tour takes you 1,500 feet into the mine where the temperature is a cool 47 degrees.

Arizona Sonora Desert Museum

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a world-renowned zoo, natural history museum and botanical garden, all in one place. The Desert Museum stays open Saturday evenings in June, July and August until 10pm to take advantage of cooler summer nights.  With special themes and activities planned for each Saturday, these summer evenings are an awesome way to experience a unique summer evening. Keep in mind some animals like mountain lions and beavers are especially active at night! The admission rates are slightly discounted in the summer,  adults are $12 & kids 4-12 are $3. Tucson Children’s museum

The Tucson Children’s Museum is geared towards kids ages 10 and under and have a wide variety of activities and exhibits. The train room,  grocery store/kitchen and fire truck exhibits are some of our favorites! Pay only $2 admission during the 2nd Saturday of every month. They have picnic tables available if you want to pack a picnic lunch.

International Wildlife Museum

The International Wildlife Museum is completely indoors, perfect for a summer time visit. See over 400 species of mammals, inspects and birds up close and personal. My boys especially love the ferret tunnel and all the interactive displays. Here’s a link to my post about our visit to the International Wildlife Museum. 

Pima Air and Space Museum

See over 300 air and spacecraft at the Pima Air and Space Museum. With several air cooled hangars to explore, visiting the Pima Air and Space Museum is a year round activity. In addition, the museum offers Soarin’ Saturdays, hands on demonstrations and activities for kids included in the price of admission.  Don’t have time for a full visit? You can stop by and have lunch at the Flight Grill without paying admission. With floor to ceiling windows and views of aircraft outside and in the adjacent hangar, it’s almost like dining at the airport!

The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures

The Mini Time Machine Museum is a unique museum of miniatures, both historical and modern. This magical place appeals to both kids and adults alike. Admission rates are $9 for adults, $6 for kids (4-17) and kids (3 and under) are free.  Visit on a Thursday, and save a few bucks, adults only pay $6.

Tucson Attraction Discounts

If you plan on visiting several museums or attractions in the area, I recommend buying the Tucson Attractions Passport for $18 . It’s full of  B1G1 admission coupons for local attractions. The current passport is good through September 15th.

Yesterday I took Quinn to a friend’s birthday party, an awesomely fun pirate birthday party. Naturally, we are pirate fans and because I know some of you are too, I wanted to share some of their fun pirate birthday party ideas!

Pirate Birthday Party Ideas

My absolute favorite part of the party was the “Walking the Plank” activity. All the kids LOVED it and lined up over and over again. I have seen the wood board (plank) before but not the jumping into the “water” part. The kids had a blast, landing into pillows and balloons at the end of the plank!

Pirate Food

The party food was cute too, from pirate bananas and hot dog squids to boats on the ocean (blue jello, complete with a Swedish fish in the bottom and an orange slice ship). There was also little bags of pirate’s booty and cheese cubes on pirate sword cocktail picks.

Pirate Games

The kids’ 2nd favorite activity had to be “cannonballs”. At least that’s what I think it was called. Basically the kids were split up into two teams and they tried to toss the most cannonballs (cheese poofs) onto a designated person’s head. The lucky volunteers were wearing shower caps with shaving cream on top so the cheese poofs would stick. It was quite silly but the kids loved it.

More pirate fun included making your own pirate patch and sword. You can see Quinn’s sword was more of a ceremonial pirate sword full of fancy gems. And no birthday party is complete without a pinata – A pirate pinata in this case!

This was definitely one of the best themed parties we have been too! More fun pirate birthday ideas I’ve seen on pinterest include digging for treasure in a sandbox, captain hook’s ring toss and making your own pirate hat.  Speaking of pinterest, are you following me? Thank goodness for Becca. I don’t know what I would do with my technology guru! I’ve only been an iPhone convert for about a year and man was I CLUELESS at first. I probably still am. Becca is guest posting today, sharing tip and tricks for all the iPhone newbies and almost newbies out there.

You just got an iPhone, and you need a little help.

It’s ok, I did too at first. It takes a little getting used to, but I can promise that in a few short weeks you’ll be singing it’s praises.

Oh wait – you’ve had your phone for a while?

Continue on… I still might be able to teach you something.

iPhone 101

1. What’s an app? Something you’re about to fall in love with.

Apple’s advertising slogan “There’s an app for that” is entirely true. Budget, games, health tracking (weight, blood pressure, migraine, fertility, food allergies are just a few), productivity, fitness, photography, education, social networking, news, sports… I could go on for quite a while.

An app is what makes your phone yours. It’s software that you can easily download from the App store (some are free and some are paid) to make your phone do what you want it to. Next to the #1 above, you can see one of my favorite health apps, MyFitnessPal.

There’s no need to look far for apps – look on your iPhone for the logo above and then click “featured” or “top charts” and begin browsing. If you have a facebook account, many people ask their friends which apps are their favorite.

2. What are these numbers everywhere? Notifications. The numbers are telling you that the app has information for you. Maybe the mail app has new mail (like #2 above), the phone app wants to show you a missed call or the facebook app has new notifications or messages. Click the app and see what’s going on, and the notifications will disappear until next time.

If these numbers drive you batty, click your settings icon and then click Notifications. Click the app you want to change the settings for and there you’ll see a plethora of ways the app can notify (or not notify) you!

3. Time to organize! After installing a few apps, your iPhone may look very unorganized. If this bothers you as much as it does me, you can group them together into a folder. To group apps, touch one and hold your finger still for about 3 seconds. You’ll see your apps do the Harlem Shake and you’ll be able to drag them on top of one another. This will add both apps to a folder. Take your finger off the app (they’ll still be shaking) and add more to the folder the same way.

You can name your folder what you like or let your iPhone title it for you. When you’re done organizing your apps, touch the “home” button (the round button at the bottom of your phone) and your apps will get to take a much needed break.

iPhone 201

1. Say It Loud! Sometimes you need to get a message out, but it’s just not a good time to text. Enter voice dictation. When in a text producing app like twitter, facebook, iMessage, or email, tap the microphone button:

When you hear a beep, it’s time to talk. Press “done” when finished and the iPhone will dictate your message. It’s best to dictate short messages until you get used to the feature. Manually go in and correct errors after. The speed of your voice dictation will depend on your iPhone’s cell or wifi signal.

2. Does scrolling have to take forever? It doesn’t! Tapping the time at the top of your iPhone screen will bring you back to the top of a document or web page immediately.

You can also drag the screen up and down with your finger or flick the screen up or down to scroll through a document.

3. Don’t lose your work! To save an email as a draft, touch the cancel button on the top left side of the email message. After touching cancel, you’ll be prompted to delete the draft or save it. Choose save. To find the draft later, open your email account and touch and hold the compose button (at the bottom right). Your list of saved drafts will pop up and you’ll be able to finish your message.

I am JUST now getting around to spring cleaning, or rather spring organizing. Technically we have 5 weeks until summer, so I still have time. Therefore, I am switching topics on Frugal Ramblings this week from Disneyland to Spring Cleaning and Organizing. Specifically, I am talking about cleaning out closets.  Keeping your closet organized and clutter free, saves you time. Remember time is also a limited resource and you don’t want to waste it.

 Cleaning Out Closets

I think the most important tips I have when cleaning out closets are to have a game plan (what are your requirements for deciding what to keep) and to be honest (or maybe brutal) with yourself!

I have conquered my closet. The boys clothes and toys are next on the list. Is anyone done spring cleaning yet or just starting like me? And I’m curious have you ever used technology to help you spring clean? I would love to hear your thoughts on it!

A few weeks ago the boys and I were invited to tour Shamrock Farms. I have to admit I was pretty excited and thankfully my boys were too. The Shamrock Farms tour was already on my to-do list, we just hadn’t made it there yet.

For those unfamiliar with Shamrock Farms, what rock do you live under? Just kidding. Shamrock Farms is actually one of the largest family owned and operated dairies in the US and it started in Tucson. Go Tucson!

My mom toured the Shamrock Dairy in Tucson as a kindergartener – like 100 years ago. Just kidding, Shamrock Farms was founded in 1922 so it wasn’t quite that long ago.

When I was in junior high, I remember driving by a Shamrock Farms plant on the way to school. I just assumed it was a small Arizona dairy. That’s how Shamrock Farms started, as Shamrock Dairy in Tucson with only 20 cows. Now as Shamrock Farms, they have 10,000 cows and sell dairy products nationwide.

Shamrock Farms is located in Stanfield, Arizona. It’s sort of west of Casa Grande in a remote, rural area. Part of the adventure is just driving out there.

We arrived at Roxie’s red welcome barn early so we had a few minutes to explore all the neat stuff they have on display. I really liked seeing how things had changed over time from historical photos and facts to the old school dairy packaging.

The boys were more impressed with the fun hands on activities that kept them busy before the tour started.

Shamrock Farms Tour

The majority of the tour takes place on an open-air tram. While we toured the farm, our tour guide shared lots of information about the dairy arm, how it operated and how they cared for the cows.

I’m a math geek, so I really appreciate numbers.

1 cow + 100 pounds of feed + 35 gallons of water = 8.5 gallons of milk + 30 pounds of waste. Every day. Multiply that by 10,000 cows, and we are talking lots of milk (and lots of manure).

There are a couple of stops on the tour. The boys had a hard time choosing their favorite one. It was either Roxie’s Outdoor Adventure, the dairy themed playground.

Or feeding the baby calves.

We also stopped to see the cows being milked and watch a video about the milk processing plant in Phoenix. The video was dated (as all promotional videos are in my experience) but interesting. I loved watching Quinn giggle at the silly little jokes, it was definitely made with school age children in mind. Elliot lost interest pretty fast but not shocking for a 3-year-old; Luckily the video was short.

One neat thing we learned was that milk comes out of the cows at 101 degrees and then it’s immediately cooled to 36 degrees to keep it fresh. They had pipes with the milk running through it so you could feel the extreme temperature difference.

Tips From My Experience

1. It took about 70 minutes to get to Shamrock Farms from NW Tucson. Plan on arriving early so you don’t miss your tour. Remember you can explore the barn while waiting for the tour to begin.
2. There is a snack bar that sells chips, hotdogs, pretzels, milk and ice cream.
3. The welcome barn has a large eating area with plenty of tables so you could also pack your own food. Remember Shamrock Farms is located in a very rural area and there is nowhere nearby to eat.
4. The gift shop has a $1 section - I loved that! My boys each picked out a silly ice cream popper toy and I happily paid $2.

Overall we really enjoyed the Shamrock Farms tour, it’s definitely worth a visit or two… We plan on heading back in the fall with Peter, the boys want daddy to see the cool dairy farm too.

We travel on a budget, it’s the only way we can. That doesn’t mean we stay at no tell motels and eat top ramen cooked in the coffee maker. Although if you are willing to rock that, more power to ya! Disney Pin Trading On A Budget

Need more information about Disney Pin Trading? Check out this official sheet on Disney Pin Trading Etiquette.

Pin Trading can get expensive (individual pins start ~$8 and go up in price) but there are a few ways to help with the cost.

1. Disney travel packages often include a free lanyard and pin.  And not just packages from the Walt Disney Travel Company but also packages from Costco, AAA and GetAwayToday.  These free pins are great for trading.
2. You can buy starter lanyards at the park that includes several pins, these starter sets are a better value compared to buying each piece individually.
3. Buy pin sets from the DisneyStore.com, right now there are regular price sets with 7 pins for only $30. Occasionally you can find the sets on sale or use a promo code to get a better deal.
4. I also cautiously recommend ebay. As long as the pins are authentic Disney pins in good condition, it doesn’t matter what you buy.  You can easily find pins for $1 a piece when you buy a bulk set. Just be sure you buy from a reputable seller with lots of positive feedback!
