Utah's flagship art museum, Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA), will have an exhibition on Hindu Lord Krishna starting August eight.

Running till November 20 in the Museum's Emma Eccles Jones Education Gallery, this Krishna exhibition “explores the Hindu god Krishna through sacred and secular artworks, dating from the 11th century to the 20th, from the Museum's Asian art collection. Krishna promised followers that through bhakti (devotion) to him, one could gain moksha (salvation).”

Applauding UMFA for organizing Hinduism focused exhibition, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, said that art had a long and rich tradition in Hinduism and ancient Sanskrit literature talked about religious paintings of deities on wood or cloth.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, also commended UMFA for Hindu artifacts in its permanent collections; which included images of Hindu deities Shiva, Vishnu, Durga, Ganesha, Lakshmi, Hanuman, Saraswati, etc.

Rajan Zed urged major art museums of the world, including Musee du Louvre and Musee d'Orsay of Paris, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Los Angeles Getty Center, Uffizi Gallery of Florence (Italy), Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Modern of London, Prado Museum of Madrid, National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, etc., to frequently organize Hindu art focused exhibitions, thus sharing the rich Hindu art heritage with the rest of the world.

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts, a university and state art museum whose history goes back to early 1900s, claims to be “Utah's primary cultural resource for global visual arts” and having “a comprehensive collection of over 5,000 years of art from around the world”. Per its mission statement, it “inspires critical dialogue”. Located on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City, it claims to preserve over 19,000 original art objects. Gretchen Dietrich and George Lindsey are Executive Director and Deputy Director respectively.

After 26 increasingly successful years of India Fest, few people in Utah County are unaware that, once a year, you can go to India without spending a lot of money. You can have India right in -- of all places -- Spanish Fork! Now, this year an additional India fest will be held in Salt Lake City. The Sunday event in SLC will involve the same entertainers & Ramayana drama as in Spanish Fork, but will be held indoors for a maximum of 400 people, and, obviously, no fireworks.

Over 4,000 people attended last year’s celebration in Spanish Fork, and the second, more modest SLC event will give a chance to visitors who want the same basic event without straying out of the city that weekend.

Admission is $3.00 person/$1.00 children.

Set around the Rajastani-style, multi-domed temple, the eight acre festival site will feature world class entertainment, cuisine, a gift shop, henna hand decorating, art, photography, cultural exhibits on India, a gala pageant of the epic Ramayana, the burning of a 20’ high ten-headed demon named Ravana, and spectacular fireworks.

I am a Bharatanatyam dancer, who trained first under the Guru Dhananjayans in Chennai, and then Guru Kalyani Shekhar in Delhi. I then lost touch with dance for about 15 years, until I revived my passion and interest for this ancient art form, under the instruction of Divya Narayanan. Dance is the language of my soul, communicating with the divine. This classical dance form takes me back through the centuries of tradition that flow through my veins. I have a PhD in Mathematics and my day job involves quantitative equity modelling?

Here are the items we will perform.

1. Mallari (dance evoking a traditional temple circumnambulation of the deity preceeded by musical instruments and dance)

2. Devi Stuti ( an offering to the mother goddess)

3. Muralidhara Kauthuvam ( in praise of Krishna)

4. Bala Kanaka Maya Chela ( a Thyagaraja hymn where he asks Lord Rama for compassion)

5. Rusli Radha ( a tiff between Radha and Krishna reflected in all of Brindavan/Gokul)

6. Mangalam ( a note of blessing for the whole world)

Students who will perform with Sri Latha Are: Malavika Singh and Arundhati Oommen (9 years old), Sahana Balaji (10 years old), Maya Jammulapati (12 years old)

The main event 7:30 pm, will be a pageant of the world's most loved epic, the Ramayana. It culminates at 8:30 pm with the spectacular burning of the effigy of evil Ravana with flaming arrows and fireworks. *Please note this last part of the burning of the effigy and fireworks will occur only in Spanish Fork. In SLC the pageant of the Ramayana will stop short of that point. Otherwise, both day's programs will be the same.

There are 400 parking spaces on the temple property. Parking is free. There is no need to park on the road, and walk a long way to the event. It is also advised to bring a blanket for sitting in the grass amphitheater and a jacket for the slight cooling after 8 pm.

Mahatma Gandhi's grandson visiting SLC

Arun Gandhi, the grandson of the legendary peace-maker and spiritual leader, Mohandas K. Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, will be coming to the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) as part of National Interfaith Month on February 29, 2012.

Arun will be speaking at the SLCC Taylorsville/Redwood Campus in the Markosian Library on the Second Floor at 12:00p.m. He will be discussing the belief of Nonviolence and how that can relate to greater interfaith dialogue. He will also be presenting this lecture in conjunction with the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable at the Salt Lake City Public Library’s Main Branch at 7:00pm. These events are free of charge and open to the public.

Arun Gandhi has been involved in projects for economic and social reform in India, as well as America. He and his late wife, Sunanda, founded the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence. The institute’s mission is to educate and progress the practices of nonviolence to achieve a sustainable and just world. Arun has also traveled across the global to such places as Brazil, Croatia, France, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Nicaragua, to share his unique perspective on one of history’s most influential leaders.

This event has been made possible by the sponsorship of SLCC’s Speakers Bureau, the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable, and the Salt Lake City Public Library. Sunday, November 13, 2011 - 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m at the Main Library Auditorium

Sponsored by Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple of Utah and India Cultural Center and The City Library, the event will showcase talented artists from the Indian diaspora in Utah. Children from the Salt Lake City Gurukul, a forum for children to discover, learn and appreciate their Indian and Hindi cultural roots, will begin the day with prayers for health, knowledge, and peace. The prayers will be followed by lighting of the Diya, a lamp which symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. The event will include music, song and dance performances by accomplished members of Utah's Indian-American community, including classical Indian dance forms such as Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi and Odissi. There will also be traditional, folk and contemporary dances from various regions within India, performed and choreographed by members of the community.

There will be face painting and Henna for kids and light Indian refreshments will be served.
