NEW YORK: If you really loved your meal at one New York restaurant, you can now walk out with the skin of the animal you ate.

Marlow & Sons, an eaterie in the city's trendy Williamsburg neighborhood, wants clients to be able to remember their meals forever by purchasing items such as bags made from the hide of cows and other animals served up from the kitchen.

"We want something people could enjoy beyond their dinner," Kate Huling, wife of the owner, told. "They come in, they eat, they leave and usually think of something else. So the bags really preserve and honor that animal."

Belts, wallet and hats and sweaters using wool and rabbit fur will also be on offer once the animal in question has been eaten.

The idea will be a boon for struggling local tanneries and the New York fashion industry, Huling said.

The festival is limited in its celebrations in Pakistan. Instead, the celebrations of spring known as 'Jashn-e-baharaan' in Urdu, are carried on in the entire country for almost a month. Basant, in particular, is celebrated in eastern Punjab especially Lahore. Lahore being the historic capital of Punjab celebrates Basant with a lot of vigour and enthusiasm. Although traditionally it was a festival confined to the old-walled city it has spread all through out the city. Other cities in which Basant is mainly celebrated are Gujranwala, Faisalabad,Jhelum,Kasur,Sialkot and Rawalpindi/Islamabad.

Basant is celebrated with great joy in Lahore, as Daily Times, a Pakistani Newspaper states:

"There a lot of rush at kite shops, especially in old Lahore as children and middle-aged men gathered to purchase their favourite coloured kites and string. Rehan, an intermediate student said ...the festival was part of the city’s culture, adding that a number of special dishes were also prepared for the occasion. He said this year, however, people would only be flying kites. Arsalan, a resident of the Walled City, said Basant was the event of colours and lights, adding that a number of people in his area had installed lights at their residences. He said “the dance of kites in lights” would be visible to everyone who would look up at the sky"^[8].

It was for many years officially backed by the government and sponsored by multinational corporations. Although Basant is celebrated throughout Pakistani Punjab, it is Lahore which made it popular not only in Pakistan but all over the world as the largest kite festival. Over the years, the Basant festival has drawn thousands of revellers to Lahore from all over the world. Even Indian movie stars had started participating in the festival which peaks with an all-night flood-lit kite flying marathon on the eve of the festival. However, there are accidents and even deaths during the festival each year because of the public's ignorance towards the use of banned strings and also gunfire.

Widow of man killed by Davis commits suicide

LAHORE: The wife of one of two motorcyclists shot dead by a US government employee last month committed suicide on Sunday due to sheer frustration that she may not get justice in view of the pressure being built to get the American released.

The US consular employee, whom Pakistani police identified as Raymond Davis, was arrested on January 27 after shooting dead Mohammad Faheem and Faizan Haider, claiming he acted in self-defence fearing the pair were about to rob him.

A third person was knocked down and killed by a vehicle from the US consulate in Lahore that tried to rescue Davis. The American was arrested by the police and a case of double murder was registered against him.

“Mohammad Faheem’s wife Shumaila on Sunday morning took poisonous pills and she was taken to the Allied Hospital” in Faisalabad city, local police chief Usman Anwar told AFP. Hospital doctor Ali Naqi confirmed the suicide attempt, describing her condition is critical. “We are trying our best but we cannot say anything so far,” Naqi told AFP.

He quoted Shumaila as saying that she feared Davis could be released without trial.

Shumaila told a private TV channel that she was upset over reports that efforts were being made to secure his release. “I was under shock and decided to kill myself,” she said. “We want blood for blood,” she told the channel. Faheem’s brother Mohammad Waseem told AFP that Shumaila, 18, was plunged into a “severe depression” by her husband’s death.

She took the pills before dawn and was rushed to the hospital early Sunday, he said. Despite strenuous efforts by the doctors, Shumaila’s life could not be saved. Heavy contingents of police surrounded the Allied Hospital and evacuated the ward whereas the Elite Force was deployed near the main gate of the hospital to avoid any untoward incident.

Earlier, after first aid, Shumaila Kanwal told media persons at the hospital that she took poisonous tablets that are normally used to keep wheat stored at home protected from pests and insects which led her condition to the worst.

Shumaila appealed to PML-N’s Quaid Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif that justice should be ensured and demanded punishment to Raymond Davis. Fahim’s brother said they feared that authorities were trying to protect Raymond Davis and they would not get the justice. He too appealed to high authorities and the government to act against the assassin.

The ICC tribunal has announced a sanction of ten years' ineligibility for Salman Butt (with five years of a suspended sentence); seven years for Mohammad Asif (with two years suspended) and five years' ineligibility for Mohammad Amir. The sanctions follow investigations of their role in spot-fixing, along with Mazhar Majeed, a players' agent, during Pakistan's tour of England in 2010.

The announcement on Saturday evening followed a day of deliberations in Doha between the three-man tribunal - comprising Michael Beloff QC, Sharad Rao and Justice Albie Sachs - and the players and their legal teams.

The sentences are open to appeal by both sides - players and ICC - in the Court of Arbitration in Sport in Switzerland.

Butt, who was captain during the series in England, received the maximum sentence but one charge against him - of batting out a maiden over during the Oval Test - was dismissed. However, he was found to have not disclosed an approach by Majeed that he should bat a maiden over.

The other charges that were upheld relate to the subsequent Lord's Test, where Amir and Asif were found to have bowled deliberate no-balls and Butt was party to that.

The tribunal released a statement after announcing the decision. The full text is reproduced below:

'The independent Anti-Corruption Tribunal which has been hearing the cases of Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif under the ICC's Anti-Corruption Code for Players and Player Support Personnel had adjourned on Tuesday 11th January 2011 after a six day hearing.

'The Tribunal reconvened today for further submissions and thereafter announced the following decisions.

'The Tribunal found that the charge under Article 2.1.1 of the Code that Mr Butt agreed to bat out a maiden over in the Oval Test match played between Pakistan and England from 18 to 21 August 2010 was dismissed, whereas the charge under Article 2.4.2 that Mr Butt failed to disclose to the ICC's ACSU the approach by Mr Majeed that Mr Butt should bat a maiden over in the Oval Test was proved.

'The Tribunal found that the charges under Article 2.1.1 of the Code that (respectively) Mr Asif agreed to bowl and did bowl a deliberate no ball in the Lord's Test match played between Pakistan and England from 26 to 29 August 2010, Mr Amir agreed to bowl and did bowl two deliberate no balls in the same Test, and Mr Butt was party to the bowling of those deliberate no balls, were proved.

'We impose the following sanctions:

'On Mr Butt a sanction of ten years ineligibility, five years of which are suspended on condition that he commits no further breach of the code and that he participates under the auspices of the Pakistan Cricket Board in a programme of Anti-Corruption education.

'On Mr Asif a sanction of seven years ineligibility two years of which are suspended on condition that he commits no further breach of the code and that he participates under the auspices of the Pakistan Cricket Board in a programme of Anti-Corruption education.

'On Mr Amir sanction of five years of ineligibility.

'No further sanctions are imposed on any player and no orders are made as to costs.

'The Tribunal has recommended to the ICC certain changes to the Code with a view to providing flexibility in relation to minimum sentences in exceptional circumstances.

'The Tribunal note that it is for the ICC, whether and if so when, the fully reasoned decision in respect of the breaches of the Code and of the sanctions imposed in consequence should be published.

'It is our strong and unanimous view that it is in the interests of all concerned in the world of cricket that publication should take place as soon as possible.'
