Architectural photographer Nelson Garrido makes the Axis Viana Hotel in Portugal look absolutely stunning. Designed by architectural firm VHM, the 4-star hotel features overlapping, stacked sections which are balanced by two lower concrete levels. The hotel consists of 88 rooms and suites comfortably equipped with Wi-Fi and interactive LCD TVs.

アメリカ人現代美術アーティスト、エド・ルシェの50年間の作品78点を集めた回顧展「Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting」が、サウスバンク・センターにあるHayward Gallery（ヘイワード・ギャラリー）で1月10日まで開催されている。ルシェは、18歳で故郷のオクラホマシティを離れ、ロスの学校でグラフィックデザインとファインアートを学んだ後、ロサンゼルスをベースに活動を続けている。アメリカの日常生活から題材を取ったイメージと言葉（タイポグラフィー）を結合させたカラフルな作品は、時にポップアートムーブメントと結びつけられるが、概念芸術、現実主義、超現実主義等とジャンルを超えた作品を作り続ける彼自身は、安易に特定のカテゴリーに入れられるのを嫌う。

政治的メッセージの強い作品や抽象的すぎる作品等、あんまり好きじゃないものもあるけれど、印刷物、グラフィックデザイン、映画、写真への造詣を反映した、シンプルで平坦なタッチの彼の作品を集めたこの回顧展は、私の中では、今年見た展覧会の中でもトップの部類に入る。ルシェは、ありきたりの退屈な日常風景を、概念やドラマを与えることによって、生き生きと描き出す。展覧会のポスターにも使われている「Standard Station」や、「The Old Tech-Chem Building」などの産業施設を描いた作品は、ダイナミックさを与える斜線の多用、題材のまわりのゆったりとしたスペース、そしてミニマリスト的なアプローチが、印象に残る。また、映画の影響の大きい「Exit」「The End」等、80年代〜90年代初期の白黒の作品は物寂しげで心つかまれるし、これらの作品とは対照的に、「The Mountain」を代表とする近年の山をテーマに描かれた作品は、明るい空を背景に丁寧に描き込まれている山々と、山とは何の関係もない、シンプルなタイポグラフィーの組み合わせが，何故か清々しい気分にさせてくれ、心洗われる。
