ZA News is the result of a long-term collaboration between political cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro (aka Zapiro), and film and TV producer Thierry Cassuto. Facing much resistance from all South African broadcasters, in 2009 they finally took the show to air – over the internet, with support from Kulula and the Mail&Guardian. Comprising life-size puppets of some of South Africa’s most notorious newspaper headliners, the mock newscast is released daily with a weekly round-up on Saturdays.

Zapiro is editorial cartoonist for Mail&Guardian, Sunday Times and The Times. He has published 14 cartoon collections, and received numerous international and SA awards, including two honorary doctorates. He first spoke at the Design Indaba Conference in 2007.

Cassuto is the founder and executive producer of Cape Town-based production company Both Worlds. Before choosing Cape Town over Paris in 1998, he initially ran programming at national TV channel M6, worked for Suez Communications and finally went on to found indie production company TVTV.

Handspring Puppet Company

The Handspring Puppet Company was founded in 1981 by Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler. Working out of Kalk Bay in Cape Town, the company’s original focus was the creation of new South African plays for children, followed by innovative educational work for TV.

Since 1985 however, they have garnered critical acclaim in developing an adult audience for the theatre of puppets, having produced 11 plays and two operas. Collaborations with the likes of playwright Barney Simon, visual artist William Kentridge, poet Lesego Rampolokeng and Mali’s Sogolon Puppet Troupe have cemented their esteem.

In 2007, they won the Oliver, Evening Standard and London Critics’ Circle awards for the stage production of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse, commissioned by the National Theatre in London. Some three years on, the perennially sold-out production continues to run and was recognised as the “theatrical event of the decade” by the UK Sunday Times.

Their new production opens at the National Theatre, London, in September 2010, under the direction of Neil Bartlett.

Han Feng is one of the most sought-after fashion designers in the world, not only for her clothing and accessories, but also increasingly for her costume and exhibition designs. She has designed costumes for award-winning operas including Madama Butterfly in London (2005), The Bonesetter’s Daughter in San Francisco (2008) and Handel’s Semele in Brussels (2009). She has also worked on a number of films including the upcoming Kung Fu Kid.

Born in Nanjing, China, she graduated from the China Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou in the early 1980s. She moved to New York City in 1985, where she quickly began a career in fashion and launched her first ready-to-wear line in 1993. After much success and earning several awards in the US, she returned to her native China relocating her showroom to Shanghai.

Bruce Nussbaum

Bruce Nussbaum is a leading advocate for design thinking and innovation. Former assistant managing-editor at BusinessWeek, Nussbaum founded the award-winning “Design & Innovation” online channel and NussbaumOnDesign blog in 2005, as well as the quarterly IN—Inside Innovation supplement in 2006. As such, he was named one of the 40 most powerful people in design by ID magazine and one of the most influential design thinkers in the book Glimmer.

Now professor of Innovation and Design at the Parsons School for Design, he continues to blog at NussbaumOnDesign, is active on Twitter and curates a lecture series called Design-At-The-Edge. He is a former Peace Corps Volunteer, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, frequently leads workshops on design and innovation at Davos, and a member of the Group Action Council on Design for the World Economic Forum.

Since graduating from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Arnhem in 1991 and the Royal College of Art in London in 1995, Ineke Hans’s work has evolved in many ways, acquiring the identity most clearly of a designer, with the impulses of a sculptor and the industrial experience needed to define products with a commercial life.

She worked for three years for HABITAT UK on their mass-produced furniture and product collections, and in 1998 started to work from Holland. Here she founded her studio INEKE HANS/ARNHEM, working with a few assistants on events, interiors, furniture and products. Alongside this she still designs her own collections, which she presents internationally.

From the beginning her work has been based on a strong belief in the magical power of products and environments on our imagination and behaviour. “Perceptiveness about the connections between people and objects is a fundamental prerequisite for a furniture designer”, she explains.

Her work investigates the psychological roots of products, perceiving and playing with the interaction between people and objects. It centres around the pictogram and archetype, and draws on the images stored in the back of our minds from earliest childhood as a collective consciousness. These images enable us to put one and two together, and fantasise about the potential use of unknown objects and situations.

Function and utility are very often a starting point for her work and in her early, sometimes robust furniture – such as Seven Chairs in Seven Days (1995) and Under Cover Chairs (1997) – she discovered the essence and origins of their functional type, combining in their design an associative power and archetypical clarity. Her designs – both mass produced and one-offs – share a toy-like quality, counterbalanced by a sober, down-to-earthn tone. All speaking as strong characters, her work reminds us, like a gentle tap on the shoulder, that furniture has to function, not just as a physical support, but also in your mind.

Dutch product designer Tord Boontje first studied industrial design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven before completing his Masters at the Royal College of Art in London. He founded Studio Tord Boontje in London in 1996, before relocating to France in 2005. In 2009 he was appointed professor and head of Design Products at the Royal College of Art and continues work at his own studio, now also located back in London.

The challenge and opportunity he has long sought is a delicate marriage of design with emotion that is as broadly accessible as it is enticing. Collaborating with artisans from Colombia, Guatemala, Brazil and Senegal, for brands such as Artecnica and Moroso, a sensual world of design emerges. His work draws from a belief that modernism does not mean minimalism, that contemporary does not forsake tradition, and that technology does not abandon people and senses.

Troika is a multi-disciplinary art and design practice founded in 2003 by Conny Freyer, Eva Rucki and Sebastien Noel, who met while studying at the Royal College of Art in London.

With backgrounds in graphic and communication, art, product design and engineering, Troika has developed a variety of self-initiated and commissioned projects that are both engaging and demanding to the user, from printed matter to product design and custom art installations. Their approach focuses on the contamination between the arts and design disciplines, and is born out of love for simplicity, playfulness and an essential desire for provocation.

Troika has shown at prominent museums and galleries worldwide, and they have authored two books to date: Digital by Design (2008) and Moscow Style (2005). In 2007 they were named one of the top 50 hottest UK names in design by The Guardian, and in 2006 were given the NESTA Award for innovation.

Stefan G Bucher

Stefan G Bucher is the man behind 344 Design and the Daily Monster – an online drawing and storytelling experiment. His monsters have invaded computer screens all over the world, and their savage adolescence is chronicled in the book 100 Days of Monsters (2008).

Under 344 Design, he has created gratuitously ambitious designs for Sting, David Hockney, director Tarsem and the New York Times, and works with a whole roster of brilliant, driven clients. His time-lapse drawings also currently appear on the rebooted TV classic The Electric Company on PBS.

In 2009, he published The Graphic Eye: Photographs by International Graphic Designers and a new edition of his first book, All Access: The Making of Thirty Extraordinary Graphic Designers, in Taiwan.

Bouroullec Brothers

The collaboration between brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec is a permanent dialogue nourished by their differing personalities and shared perfectionism.

Their big break happened in 1997, when they presented their Disintegrated Kitchen at the Paris Furniture Fair and were spotted by Giulio Cappellini, who gave them their first industrial design projects. Since then, they’ve worked with numerous manufacturers, notably Vitra, Kvadrat, Magis, Kartell, Established and Sons, Ligne Roset and Issey Miyake. Nonetheless, they still actively produce experimental work, of which there have been four exhibitions at Galerie Kreo, Paris, since 2001. They also undertake the occasional architectural project.

Winners of numerous awards, several exhibitions have been devoted to their work, which can also be found in a number of permanent collections around the world. They have published two monographs about their design work.

Harry Pearce

Harry Pearce joined Pentagram’s London office as a partner in 2006 having co-founded and grown Lippa Pearce to become one of the UK’s most respected design agencies over the previous 16 years.

Encompassing the public and private sectors, local and global charities, and commercial enterprises, his diverse clients include The Co-operative, Halfords, Phaidon Press, the Science Museum, Saks Fifth Avenue, Shakespeare’s Globe and Boots. To each he brings his own brand of intelligence combined with elegance and warmth mixed with wit.

Pearce is also a member of the advisory board and lead designer for Witness – a human rights charity founded by Peter Gabriel. Throughout his career he has been concerned to make connections, to use design to connect minds so that they share a different and clearer vision. In 2009 he published his collection of typographic puzzles, Conundrums.

Brazilian designer Marcelo Rosenbaum sees the house as an element capable of increasing the self-esteem of the Brazilian people, as a place where personal memory and cultural roots have a prominent place, and as a place to include one’s own history.

Over the past 20 years, he has led a multidisciplinary team of professionals (including designers, architects, producers and communication professionals) in achieving this vision in the interior and product design arenas.

Rosenbaum also focuses on content creation and communication through his blog, monthly TV show, daily radio programme, magazine editorials and public addresses. This year celebrates the fourth season of his “Lar Doce Lar” a Brazil-specific, design-fuelled home makeover show for underprivileged families, which forms part of the Caldeirão do Huck TV show.

Alejandro Aravena is the principal of Alejandro Aravena Architects and the executive director of Elemental, a do-tank focusing on projects of social impact.

In 2008 he was named one of the 20 essential young architects by Icon magazine and won the Silver Lion for “most promising architect” at the Venice Biennale. In 2009 he won the Marcus Prize for Architecture, which recognises emerging talents, and was one of 10 recipients of RIBA’s 2010 International Fellowships.

Aravena also sits on the jury for the internationally acclaimed Pritzker Architecture Prize and held visiting professorship at Harvard University from 2000 to 2005. He is the Elemental Copec Professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
