We moved into a home this past April and it's been as exciting as you would think it would be. It's a privilege in ones life to buy a home and I feel honored and Blessed to experience it. The process has been enjoyable, except for the time my handyman told me I can't replace the load bearing pillars with gold. Those moments haven't been so fun for me.

I wanted to share this experience and transformation with you all because what kind of designer would I be if not?

This picture was taken a few minutes after I received the keys to our new house, I waited until the realtor and agent left before I took this selfie. For those who spend a lot of time with me, now you know I can make this face.

The first two weeks in the house looked like this;

I know, I told myself to breathe in before, during and after I took this picture. On the one hand I wanted to take my time with unpacking to make sure I was putting everything in the right place but on the other hand my mindfulness with unpacking quickly turned into me idly standing around like Leonardo DiCaprio at the Oscars. Did I just say that? Every decision started to make my head hurt. I needed someone to physically come over, take things out of boxes and saying "Chana, I think milk belongs in the fridge." And this someone knows who she is- thank you!

My mornings were not easy for me because this is what the route to my coffee looked like. I don't do well before my coffee when I'm vacationing so this was a challenge for me.

Now lets go through the process of finding the color scheme/vibe for the house. I wanted it to feel comfortable and inviting, at the same time I wanted to enhance the mid century bones the house already had. I consider myself so lucky to have found a space that really speaks my language. I love the warmth of mid century design, I've always been drawn to that era's shapes and style. As a designer, I use this process for my clients and never really thought I would use it for myself. As it turns out, designer or not, we all need a guide.

My process of inspiration;

I love muted colors, organic shapes and lots and lots of textures. As I started to capture what inspired me it became much easier to start putting it all together.

Then came the inspiration board;

And so started the paint process, you know the fun part of painting when you spend tons of money and time on itty bitty samples of paint. But there's a goal and it's to find your perfect color, which I did.

How can I not include this picture, it's so attractive. I know this part of the paint process might scare people because it's so hard to look at, but you need to do it. Paint looks completely different on the wall than it does on the chip. It also looks different on the wall during the day and during the night. Furniture, lighting and art are all things to take into account when finding the perfect color. Getting paint samples is a must!!

One of the big questions when we moved in was to "paint the brick or not paint the brick." I was on the "paint the brick" train from the start but I waited until we were moved in for 2 weeks to pull the trigger. I don't think in every case brick should be painted, in my case I felt very strongly about connecting the house through colors so for me, painting the brick felt right.

Now it's time to welcome you all in as I will show you the before's and after's of the house.

(Disclaimer, there's still a lot of changes I would like to make to the house so please take that into considerationwhen looking at these pictures. If I waited for it to be perfect, I would never post.)

First came the paint

This is the first living area in the house, it's full of character and space.

The after

Some not so flattering features of the house- we all have our flaws and this one's made of green textured glass 'Ew' -said like Jimmy Fallon.

Temporary solution for the all the green-ness was bookshelves in front. And there's no space of mine without a cowhide. It adds so much texture and it works ANYWHERE.

In order to create two spaces in one area, I divided the room. The office area on one side and the TV area on the other; by creating separate zones, the space feels bigger and functions more efficiently.

The wood wall that had me at hello, I talk to walls when they're made of wood.

Turned it into backdrop for a gallery wall.

A space needs to evoke all senses in order for you to truly experience a room; I like to make my candles feel very cozy.

I added sheer curtains to give it some depth without taking away the light.

The dining room is more of a big area off the kitchen that can also double over as another living space. The lighting in this room is perfect during the day because of all the windows and then at night we have this pineapple shaped chandelier that keeps us smiling.

The after, I know the after looks a lot like the before because we've only added drapes and a table, but we'll get there.

I wanted this area to feel light open as well as inviting. I did that by sticking to strong neutrals and lots of layering to get that lived in feel.

With most good things, it's usually coupled with a little sadness. We said good bye to the apartment that gave us so many good moments and memories. It will always hold a special place in our hearts, Eliana and Noam both took their first steps here, they both also had their first tantrums here. Thank you for the beautiful times, we will never forget you, although I'm not promising anything.

So every job I work on is a completely different experience with different needs. When I start a project I try to take on that persons style and find pieces that speak directly to who they are. Having said that, there are pieces that no matter the space, will always work. These pieces are also not expensive at all (now I have your attention) They are pieces that anyone can buy and use in their homes to add some style. I decided to share my very sacred list of 'favorites' because I'm a genuinely nice person.

The reason a lot of these work is because they're classic in shape while still feeling fresh. The mid century bench from Target for example, has beautiful lines that will work anywhere and mixed with the dark gray upholstery it feels very modern.
Every piece here will invite intrigue and a little chic into any space they call home.

These grays are always going to work. They're all soft and strong, making a perfect backdrop almost anywhere. They've all been tried and they've all succeeded.

What I've been up to

I'm proud to say what has kept me from blogging this past year has been my work and family and work...

I've had some great jobs over the year and every job has taught me something valuable. They have taught me that the most important part of doing good work is believing in yourself. Your vision is your expression, some people will relate to it and some people wont and that's OK.
As long as every time you produce work that relates to you 100% of the time, the clients will be happy.

The last year has also given me some perspective when it comes to couples and their homes. It's important to listen to both parties and create a space with both of their needs in mind. Women are usually more vocal with what they want; "I want it to feel modern but not cold, like a warm modern; I want it to be sophisticated but also inviting; I want a serene space but not boring; I love color but I also love the neutral look; I need this home to function for my kids but I also don't want it to be a kids' space." Men usually tell me to go easy on their card.

I've also learnt that handymen come from another planet that is not Earth. They come from a place where up is down, 9am is never and men know that socks belong in the hamper. I have no idea how these handymen are making it over here but it's very deceiving.

I've really loved all my jobs this past year and feel truly honored to all those who have welcomed me into their homes to help create a space that is true to them.

Here are some of my highlight moments..

This is the 'before' space of a Bal Harbor home. The space was really open and and light it just needed some TLC, which meant warm paint colors and some layering.

This project taught me how important it is to layer texture and color to create a home. So many people ask me how to get that 'finished' look. It's really about finding pieces that work together and compliment each other. Don't be afraid to play with shapes and sizes; big with small, tall with short. That's what's going to give your home depth- that 'finished' look.

Then there was this master bedroom that I loved for many reasons but mostly because I was given the opportunity to bring life to this room right before the arrival of their new baby. Knowing this space would be used to love and nurture a baby really made me happy. The room also turned out beautiful so there was that part that made me really happy. Here's the little area that was created in the bedroom for some special mommy and baby time.

was so enjoyable for me. I loved transforming it into a home that felt more youthful.

This was a little nook in the kitchen area that needed a lot more attention than it was getting;

This job taught me that when you have a client who is realllllly good at scouring out items on Craig's List, you end up with perfect yellow kitchen tables like this one. It also taught me that I need to be better at it.

I think the most transformative job I did over this past year was this office. It meant a little more to me because I knew it was an area my husband would spend most of his days, so I wanted him to have happy thoughts. It was also a commercial space rather than a residential so it pushed me to think outside the box which was hard because I love boxes.

The world map that was on the wall before was painted over when the office was re painted. I was feeling bad about it because the person working there had specifically chosen it for the office. So I reinvented it in a way that doesn't make me sad as a designer and a person in general.

This project taught me that deep down all men want to be surrounded by pretty things, I don't know why they bother to fight it.

And then there was the biggest change of all which was my new baby boy who melts my heart. I've learnt that besides sleepless nights, non stop diaper changing and the 75 pounds of baby gear that's useless because it's not you, babies are the most beautiful beings and watching them grow is a treasure.

Having said that, there are some things I've taken away from being a mommy of two. For example, car seats have gotten a lot heavier since I had my daughter. I think they weigh like 40 pounds now, pre-baby, which is great for those of you who don't have time to work out. All you need to do is carry your baby around in a car seat that hangs off your forearm awkwardly until you want to cry.

I've learnt that there are certain words that don't exist anymore when you have more than one child, like the word "effortless" I said good bye to that word with my first baby. "Sleep" is a word that has been replaced with "snooze" or "nap." The words "fun" and "family day" don't exist together either. Instead "fun" usually stays home to binge watch Netflix and sends along words like "stressful" and "overwhelmed." Of course this lesson didn't come to me early on. I did a lot of family days before I realized that "fun" never joins in.

I've learnt that most events in my 3 year old daughters life will take place by the car. We'll be coming out of the car when suddenly she realizes she needs her hello kitty sticker from last week and let's face it we all know I threw that sucker out before it even came into the car (oops). And for some reason all cheerios MUST be picked up from the floor of the car immediately although that same urgency doesn't exist when it comes to cheerios on the kitchen floor. The important thing to take away from this is light layers and sunscreen for those of us in Miami. For those in colder climates, bundle up, because I think it takes less time for elderly people to exit a car than toddlers.

The biggest lesson I've taken away from this past year is that not blogging for so long is not fair to all my readers out there and for that I apologize.

My Always Evolving Project; The First Bedroom

Remember when I wrote the apartment post and then promised to do write a bedroom edition? Whoever started losing faith, shame on you.
Welcome to the bedroom edition, I'm starting with the baby's bedroom/ playroom/ guest room. This was a more challenging room to pull together because it is so multi-functional. Its my daughters bedroom, its a guestroom whenever we have people over and its a play room with too many toys. I kept coming back to the same question: How do I make this an enjoyable, kid friendly room and keep it clean and stylish for guests. For a while all my answers were terrible design solutions. I don't know why I'm comfortable to share all these mistakes with you, but I am so take advantage and put on your learning caps.

The start of the process;

This was taken a few weeks after we moved into the apartment so this wasn't part of a plan. Things were just placed down and left there til further notice. I hope you can all appreciate the vulnerability of this picture.

Another view of the beautiful room. You know it takes a true designer to show the public their mistakes (or a total idiot who is shooting themselves in the foot.) Either way, it's happening and there's no turning back.

This was one of my first attempts to bring some life into the room. I put up some pin boards and plastered pictures all over it, then added mirrored butterflies. The concept? A fun and collective way to bring in some color and life. The result? Something that is unattractive to the eye.

Attempt number 2, I went for something slightly more ethereal with the branch and bird..it was a nice vignette for a picture but didn't last much longer than that.

The lights were put up,which are still there and still look good. The curtains I made because I wanted the room to feel more feminine but I wanted the color palette to stay neutral- so you see I started off with good intentions.

This picture is very dark but looking back I'm happy because it only gets worse in the light of day. There are a lot of windows in this room so choosing curtains like this was more like painting a flower mural on the walls- something I should of put more thought into.

We installed these two shelves to display dolls and other cute things. It's a nice idea but when executed like in the above picture it leaves a room feeling lost of direction. The shelves are displaying black vases, a gold over sized 'E', vintage cabbage patch dolls, a white porcelain bird... there is too much going on. There is a better way to display, for example;

The reason why this works is because it's a mixture of prints, books and toys all in the same color family. It's also edited really well to feel deliberate and thought out instead of over excited and over crowded.

The inspiration for this make over were pictures my sister in law took of my daughter. Check her out on Facebook and Instagram @themodreport; prepare to be blown away. Once those pictures were taken I found my color palette and never looked back. The room before was lost and now it had been found. The palette was soft but not feminine.

I chose sheer curtains that were very close to the wall color to make the room seem bigger, the curtains are seamless with the walls and because they're sheer all the light comes into the room really nicely.

Switching out the curtains brought a lot of serenity to the room and gave the room a soft backdrop that adds and doesn't distract.

Some bedside table styling tips; try to have fresh flowers. It always adds a good pick me up. Another thing to always try to have is a tray. It's good for when you have guests or without guests because suddenly miscellaneous objects have a place to call home. Miscellaneous objects without a place to call home start to look like junk.

This print is by Clinton Friedman, a south African photographer who is perfect at capturing the essence of nature. Check out his work here. I wanted something unexpected and raw for the room.

Looking at this picture it's hard to see past all the pink and sparkle. Does the pink and sparkle compliment my color palette? Not exactly, but do I have warm feelings towards my daughter and ultimately want her to be happy? Yes, and lucky for me that mega blocks table can be folded up and put away when not being used.

The table and chairs are from IKEA, the whole set is $20 and gives kids a good space to play. The table and chairs helped transform the room into more of a playroom.

Copper leather floor pillows may seem unconventional to some but to me there shouldn't be any other kind. They are beautiful, durable and easy to clean.

Nothing tells a guest 'we're happy to have you' like flowers and a candle. Just make sure not to leave a drink or snacks because then you will have to quietly pack up your guests bags, put them by the front door and hope they understand the message you are sending. If they don't understand then it's time for you to find new house guests and a new home address.

Interpret Style

For those of you worried that I stopped blogging, you can stop because I am still here. I figured since I officially have two followers the lack of posts wouldn't cause too much distress. Before I post about my recent projects, yes that's projects with an 's'- there has been more than one, I wanted to go back to a classic- which is interpreting the style of awesome ladies into interior spaces.

I don't want to focus on her bony chest but I definitely want to point it out........................... I love the soft pink cashmere sweater paired with the loose, white skirt- that also has pom poms. This is an easy outfit that's free and organic. The gold bracelet is the only thing that has form and sharp edges so I think it's a perfect accessory for this outfit. And those sunglasses are very cool, they tell us she's the type who can go to an Ultra concert but knows the difference between a human and a tree.

This would be where she finds solitude and gets some work done. The form of the fiddle leaf tree in the background is so beautiful and I love how the lamp mimics that shape. The black and brass chair grounds the corner with the Lucite chairs and white cowhides. Then there's the wallpaper and light fixture. The wallpaper is awesome and I'm still not sure how I feel about that caged light bulb. A part of me thinks it's beautiful and the other part tells me I should try and help.

I love those overalls with the leather jacket wrapped around her hips; She has a very down-to-earth tomboy vibe. The vintage camera she's sporting tells us she likes a good mix of old and new. And anyone who likes a good mix knows good design.

This vignette would definitely be part of her home. Its collected, a little messy and beautifully eclectic. Anyone who has a naked sculpture of a woman in blue is either crazy or has an eye for art. I'm going with 'an eye for art' because that sculpture is pretty amazing. I love how this little area breaks all the 'rules' so perfectly.

What's worse than one awesomely dressed woman?Yes, two of them. Although I have to admit I like the woman on the left with the sweatshirt and blue and white pants. She looks more effortless and comfortable. Her friend looks cool, a little house on the prairie for me but I still like it. These two women combine classic, traditional with modern ease.

This is what their shared space would look like. This room is very traditional for the most part but feels current because of the color choices. The neoclassic chair, the skirted ottoman and plush chairs would usually feel dated in other surroundings but with the chandelier and the dark painted side room this space feels modern.

This woman is bohemian, grungy, minimal, chic and all of the above. I love the way she looks. I even like how easy going she is about hailing a cab. Is it just me or does the woman behind her on the left look really annoyed? Nobody asked her to put on a Parker puff jacket.....

This would be her space because it's all of the above. It's sophisticated, laid back, modern and has a little boho spirit. All the color is coming from flowers, art or lemons. The foundation of the room is minimal and timeless- just the way I like it. The light fixture is also just the way I like it, grouped together in different sizes and at different lengths. #failproof.

Secrets to Styling a Bookshelf

Learning to style a bookshelf can be daunting and frustrating because it's a multifunctional piece that above all else needs to be functional. When done right a bookshelf can be the focus of something really beautiful, but when done wrong it can be the focus of a traumatic visit for your guest. For those of you that have bookshelves causing your guests discomfort, I want to help you. Here are some rules/tips to help give you some direction.

Rule One: Think Outside the Box.
A bookshelf doesn't only have to have books with a little frame that says "Keep Calm." It's important to vary the objects that you're using and try not to limit yourself.

This bookshelf is such a good example of awesome styling. The bookshelf is a very standard and popular one from IKEA and you can barely tell because it stands out and looks completely individual. The big print on top is great because it helps give the illusion of the bookshelf being taller and adds something graphic. All the little objects throughout create a story; the plant, the branch on a stand, the brass horse. All these objects express a personal style.

This is another example of great bookshelf styling. I love the rock crystal bookend on the top shelf, the plant is beautiful because it's sculptural and the pot is pretty too. The three small painted canvases on the second shelf are a really nice touch, they're handcrafted and unexpected. Everything here is nicely layered without feeling cluttered.

Rule Two: Use Different Shapes.
You never want your shelves to feel boring or too repetitive and because essentially you're using your bookshelf for books, you need to take advantage of the shapes you're choosing to incorporate.

So this bookshelf was done by Emily Henderson so naturally it's styled to perfection. This bookshelf has a lot of books laid out horizontally and vertically with something sweet on each shelf. You have books stacked with a little gold bowl on top, and then you have books lined up with a piece of art at the end. This keeps it feeling fresh and unexpected. Screw you, Emily Henderson. I'm just joking, call me instead.

So I think this is the mother of all examples of playing around with shapes. Take a look at that bird, definitely a different shape than all the books, and it totally works. I love the styling of these shelves, with the picture frames and miniture elephant. It's done really well.

This is good for people who want to keep their bookshelves for books instead of a lot of objects. But even though it's full of books it still has the pretty moments with the gold fish on a stand displayed with an Andy Warhol book.

Rule Three: Flowers and Nature.
Adding flowers and plants to any styling surface is always a must and bookshelves are no exception. It brings in life, color and shape and executes the finish product beautifully.

So this was also done by Emily Henderson, and here we see flowers being represented in wallpaper- a pretty damn good one. It's a gorgeous backdrop for those white open shelves. Keep in mind this can be done in your own home: Purchase the shelves from IKEA and before putting them up apply self adhesive wallpaper of your choice. I can't guarantee it will look this good or end up all over pinterest, but if it doesn't work out at least no one will ever know about it. With these open shelves the books are laid out neatly with a few nick nacks here and there to break it up. Have you ever seen better use of a fern? I love a nicely messy fern and this one looks so bright against the black and gold.

So here the flowered branches not only add something natural but it adds height and sculptural to these shelves. Branches are great for taking up a big amount of otherwise 'dead' space and still being sparse. This was done by Emily Henderson as well...... this is getting embarrassing already. I have an undying love for her that you all need to read about. I thought I got it out of my system with that post dedicated to her, but apparently not.

Fail-Proof Objects for Styling
There are some things that can be used anywhere and with any placement that will always add interest and style.

On top of these gorgeous nesting tables is a candle holder from CB2. I've purchased two of them and they're amazing. Their size is nice and big and feel very substantial. I change them around and move them constantly. I've split them up and use the bigger flower for keys and sunglasses by the front door. This is an elephant tealight holder from Nate Berkus's line at Target. I have gone to Target every time he comes out with new designs (I'm not afraid to admit it) and it only gets better. I love these Carla Peters vases from West Elm. They're good for styling because they look good with or without flowers. Don't underestimate the power of pretty boxes. Traditionally they're used for jewelry but tv remotes fit inside just fine and add some glamor to your coffee table or side table. I use little boxes all the time to hide miscellaneous things from around the house. It works for me and not my husband because he can never find anything. I understand where he's coming from but they're just so pretty :)

So when styling your bookshelf have in mind that to keep things interesting you need to be aware to use different colors and shapes throughout the shelves. And don't rush, it's fine to wait and do the process over a period of time and create a more collected feeling rather than buying out the whole accessories department in Target. Trust me, I've been there and you just feel shame.

My Always Evolving Project

I moved into my apartment last year April and it's not done and is constantly being redone. My poor husband and baby have to put up with me rearranging everything and I always want him to love what I've done. He's not great with change so by the time he likes something, I've decided to change it; It's a tough cycle for him. My apartment is my free zone to experiment with different lay outs, color combinations and materials. When you first move into a place it's hard to know how the space will be used and I found with myself that it took some time to find a good balance with my apartment after I was living in it. Maybe I'll start telling future clients that I'll do a better job if I move into their home for a short while.

So let's look at my place when we first moved in:

Entry ways are always the best way to showcase your style. Even if you don't have an actual entry way it's easy to create one. In the beginning mine was the picture above. A vase full of branches and multiple gold flower bowls. Two things could of been going on in my head; it was hard for me to decide between three of the same things so I just displayed all of them or I thought we would be sharing an apartment with other families so we would need a lot of space for keys.

This is the entry way now and I settled on one gold flower bowl and it's more than enough. The shell necklace I purchased on a trip home to Australia. I was told it was a tribal head piece but it could easily be shells sewn onto fabric. Either way I love it, and the orchid is perfect there, it brings in color and height.

I once got a sample of fabric that I loved and instead of using it I framed it.

The apartment isn't this dark, it's the lighting of this picture. The table, lamps and accessories are all great, but it feels very empty and that dorm-like window stands out like a sore thumb. A tip for my old self, if you're going to buy an awesome bronze mail stand, make sure you fill it up with mail instead of two pieces of paper bent over like that. I feel hopeless looking at that mail, it's so depressing.

The curtains do an amazing job at hiding that window and adding some layers. Those curtains are actually from Target, yes Target. Nate Berkus designed a home line for them and I got those for under $50. The grey works well against the woods and do you see how we've grown in the mail receiving department? It's now full of promise (and bills). I also added a small set of drawers to help hide the cords from the lamps because they just added to the depressing feeling.

We have a third room when you walk into the apartment, it's a really nice addition and I love the french doors. I don't love what I originally filled it up with. Using a room with french doors to store luggage is never a good idea- people can see it right when they walk in. The lamp was appealing to me at first because of the mid century shape of it but after I got home it started to look like a soldiers helmet. The lay out of the room is not great, the couch at the end of the room is hard to get to through an over sized desk and wall of suitcases that makes you feel like you're at baggage claim.

Here's a shot of the room from the other side, it's just more helmet and a fake orchid that miraculously managed to die. Another helpful tip, don't place a bookshelf in front of a french door.

So I moved the room around, creating more floor space. The desk is now smaller and fits into that space by the door and only takes up a small portion of the room. I love the plants in the room, that room is full of windows so it's a great place to have plants. The rug and floor pillows make the room lounge-y and comfortable. Another great tip, Home Goods is always worth a try- that rug was $90 and it's so gorgeous and durable.

I wanted to add some excitement to the leopard and black pillows but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I went to Walmart and found the gold and silver material and took the fabric to a dressmaker to make the pillows and I'm very happy with the result. I should take all these good ideas and become a designer.

So this is a cute start to something that will later evolve into something that actually looks good. The first thing I've learnt since then is to get a rug that fits the size of the room. This purple rug looks like an over sized play mat, it actually makes this open space feel smaller. The nothingness on top of the couch obviously does nothing for the room (don't judge me I was waiting for the right thing- which is advice I would pass on) The pillows were ok for the first few days but then I started getting a lot of complaints about the amount of pillows on the couch. A tip, if the back of the couch is made up of pillows you probably don't need to add 'throw pillows.' That is a bad idea. And it's also a good idea to have extra seating for guests. When we would have guests over my husband and I would pretend we liked standing while watching a movie because it helped the blood flow.

So the framed print above the couch adds a tremendous amount to the room, it's always good to wait to find something great rather than a fill in. The throw and blue tray add some color to the room, and having extra seating definitely helps the room. I'm still not crazy about those white side tables, I'm in the process of getting new ones.

The mirror is still there and just get better. Mirrors always add light and space to a room. That's one thing that hasn't changed yet.

This is the dining area with lots of potential. The gallery wall of black and white trees I still love. I took those while I was by Central Park once, although they're hanging a little too high and so is that art piece. Tip; if you need to tilt your neck up to see what's hanging up on the wall, don't bother because it's not worth it. The light fixture is not good at all but it's something that's not worth fixing while renting for a few years.
The second picture is the other wall in the dining room. The painting is very sentimental to the family, and I love it so we put it up. The painting desperately needs a frame which I haven't done yet. When I hung the painting I decided to add a shelf and try channeling some Emily Henderson styling, but that blew up in my face. (For any Arrested Development fans, the Tobias quote "I just blew myself" seems appropriate.)

So the shelf was replaced by the this perfect book shelf. Someone I know was moving so I got lucky and bought it off her, I love it and I will eventually be putting books there. The shelves add so much more detail and interest to the room.

I don't know if this close up makes the shelves and styling look better or worse.

So to sum up my tips;
-fake orchids can die just like real orchids
-you never need three of exactly the same thing
-it's better not to have a rug than to have one that's too small
-Stay away from any floor lamps that have helmet tops
-luggage should be in a storage room or garage
-Don't underestimate the power of flea markets; those two black arm chairs were under $200

I haven't finished the bedrooms yet but when I do I will happily write a follow up post.

Design By Season

It's been determined by psychologists that color has an immediate and lasting effect. Colors influence mood, shapes, perspective and the overall impression you make on a person. Knowing the right color palette for yourself can only help you look younger, healthier, more energetic and vibrant. Discovering your colors is a crucial part of feeling empowered and confident. I'm not a color palette expert so I can't really help you in that area but don't stop reading, I do have what to offer. I'm going to help those who already know their palettes, or have an inkling where they might fall, translate that into an interior space. I had high demand for this subject matter and I like to please my followers. (My cousin asked me so I responded.)

Winter Palette; Dramatic, high contrast and deep colors. Think of black, pure white, charcoal, burgundy, icy pink and brown black. When looking to translate this palette into an interior, there's two ways you can go about it. You can take it literally:

You can have a space like this. A lot of chrome, high contrast with patterns to create the palette. If you want to take a less literal approach, you can create a space like this:

This space has the winter color palette but not as harsh. The mirror is sculptural and so are the chairs and light fixture but the colors stay simple and understated.

Spring Palette; Bright, colorful, happy and clear colors. The spring palette has saturated colors with high contrast warm colors, like burnt orange and hot pink.

This entry way is a good example of a spring palette because it's bright and clear. The side table with the curved legs and rococo mirror on top are really intricate and feminine. I love that light sky blue front door it's so refreshing, happy and welcoming; those are the same adjectives used to describe me.

Hello gorgeous. This beautiful, brightly colored space was done by Emily Henderson, I love her and hate her at the same time. She makes it hard for someone like me who has three freelance jobs a year to believe in myself. This is a beautiful spring palette inspired space. The pale turquoise with plum flowers and pops of gold make me very happy.

Summer Palette; Pastel and medium colors with medium intensity. The summer palette is very soft and delicate and easy going.

I love this dining area because it's so bold, David Bromstad would really appreciate this space. This is a cooler more edgy summer inspired space.

This is a kitchen nook done by Angie Hranowsky, it's soft with light colors that soothe and relax you. It has a little bit of that boho vibe which is perfect for the summer. I'm wondering if this soothing color palette would help a person (who's an emotional eater) eat less or have less emotion.

Fall Palette; Warm deep colors with gold and jewel undertones. Think of olive greens, camels and browns with deep reds and blues.

This is a nice vignette with warm tones. The colors aren't so deep but they're warm and the shapes are very organic.

This fireplace is gorgeous, I love the shape and texture of it........ all that gold is overwhelming in a good way. The round red sofa with the white shag rug is perfect for the fall palette and a trip to the 70s. I love this so much.

This post should show you that I take requests really really well. You should start putting in your requests now because one day I'll be world famous and I wont be as accommodating.

Men are from Mars, Women are Better

Once upon a time a man and woman fell in love and decided to live together forever under the same roof. One day, the woman came home and found a small mountain of nail clippings on the coffee table and asked herself, "Did I think I was living with a human and in reality he's an ape?" The man later explained he intended to throw the nails away when the play-offs were over. And so begins the wonderful journey.....
For any space it's important to create the right balance between colors and shapes; even more so when working with a couple. When men and women join parties it's a difficult task to show both perspectives in their shared space. He wants a fish tank that runs across the whole wall and she wants lots of frames with pictures where she looks good and he looks really cute (fat.) A tip for the ladies: it's best to let him think he's part of the design process like when he comes up with the idea of built in cup holders in the arm rests, nod your head in agreement and then do the exact opposite.

Here are some examples of a spaces working for couples living together;

This space blends both interests together seamlessly. The color palette is neutral and soft, the shapes are varied from severe to curved and it's not over accessorized. Had those womb chairs been darker it would have felt more grounded and masculine. The drapes in the background also add softness.

Again this is a more neutral color palette but the neutrals are darker. The sofa and arm chair are very masculine in their shape so the throw and pillows tossed around work well to soften it. The different sized bowls and flowers on the coffee table bring in femininity and so does the rug; it's a strong pattern with a very soft texture. The core pieces in this room are very dominant so accessorizing becomes the balance of the room.

This is another example of a balanced space, it does lean a little more to the feminine side with the zebra ottoman and that sculpture light fixture. With the rug, walnut wood chair, muted colors and simple architecture, the room works nicely together.

Here are examples of spaces working for just the women:

This room is really pretty, warm, layered and welcoming; to most people besides men. There are way too many blush tones in this room for a man to feel comfortable with. It would take one time for the guy to stand up from the couch and knock his head into that petite dollhouse-like chandelier.
For a guy to live in this room, it would be like him saying he likes it when women wear harem pants;

Ladies think this is the hottest coolest thing right now, the men on the other hand think we should keep these pants in the Disney movie 'Aladdin' where they belong.

I love this little vignette, it's almost like a period piece. This delicate corner has everything on the feminine check list;
-the floral wallpaper
-the crystal chandelier
-the vintage shaped mirror, that's hanging from a ribbon
-the 'flea-market-feel' chair and table
-framed butterflies
This vignette leaves women lingering and men running.

Here are some spaces that work well for the men:

I think a man should be scared to bring a woman into this room, within days there would be an area rug, the pillows would slowly become smaller and fluffier and there would be a bunch of little things on the coffee table leaving no room for anything practical.

I happen to appreciate the simplicity of this bedroom but I don't know if other women would share my opinion. Maybe it's the lack of color or the vastly empty brick wall, but this bedroom needs a little TLC from a woman.

This bedroom is done really well. The blues, camels and light greys are all more masculine but with all the fabric and textures it brings in the feminine. The walls are padded, there's wall to wall carpeting, the drapes are full, the throw on the bed looks luxurious and the stools outside with the white pendant by the bed bring in all the softness the room needs for a perfect coupling. Jeff Andrews was the creator of this room. He is one of my favorite designers, if you request it, I can write a whole post on him :)
Just make a request in one of the many comments you plan on writing.... yes that's a hint.

Let's Interpret Style

It's that time of the month again.... for those ladies who have more of a connection with that statement, I'm sorry and there's no such thing as too much chocolate or alcohol or Bridget Jones. It's time to interpret the style of cool people wherever I find them.

"Hello I'm the girl who looks like a cross between Megan Fox and Dakota Fannings younger sister, Elle Fanning." She's dark, mysterious and has a beautiful butterfly collection.

The woods in the space create warmth and grounding for all the light coming into the room. It's simple and natural and sends the message that less is more. Any time a space sends that message it's very alluring.

I love this color combination; white, grey and that tan. This would be good with gold or silver and it's so easy.

This space is so sculptural and beautiful. There's not a ton of color in this room, just neutrals and different finishes that add interest. Like the woman looking for her keys, this room has a very strong core. Those room dividers are out of this world. I dream of imitating them in my own home one day in the near future. I hope that doesn't put too much pressure on my husband.

She's wearing a beautiful, simple, slightly masculine outfit. This trench dress isn't messing around, it's a strong piece that doesn't need anything else to speak for it. It has the perfect effortless drape.

This room makes a very strong impression. It's very straight forward and to the point- much like a man. Like a man, this room doesn't want to be drowned with throw pillows that have no purpose or poster prints that read "Keep Calm and Carry on"or framed pictures of people pouting to accentuate their cheekbones or the word "like."

I like this little peek-a-boo outfit, it's so cute and sporty. After having a baby I would never be able to pull this off, it would look like my stomach was sticking its tongue out at you. If you thought that joke was funny, you should start following my blog, you would love it!

This space is airy, unpretentious and happy. I love the greenery and the creams, it really opens everything up. This space is a good translation for the sporty girl above because it's minimal with good statement pieces and no frills. Those floor lamps are awesome and they're from West Elm.

Is she sad because she's lost in a field? Is she sad because her bangs are in her eyes? Maybe she's just bummed about the Office being over after nine great years...

The canopy bed would be a good transition for her coming in from the outside. I love the rustic wood beams with the linen fabric hanging down. It's soft, feminine and organic. I don't think she can be unhappy in this bedroom.

I love her, I don't know her but I love her. Her jacket is killer and paired with the tank top and leggings is so chic. The whole look tells me she is not easy going when the person working at starbucks puts sugar in her coffee. This is where she will end up at the end of her long day of coffee and music.

This room is by David Hicks, a truly great designer. This room is sophisticated not intimidating and feels low-key. The woman above needs a space to feel easy, she doesn't look like the type who can be busy with details or able to lift heavy objects. The abstract art is a big impact but it doesn't feel stiff. I love the color scheme and textures of this room. David Hicks people, look him up.

She's cool, edgy, a little traditional and youthful. The Alexander Wang bag tells me she has a true understanding of style and rocks it. I know that because I actually have someone very close to me in my life who has an Alex Wang bag and she is the coolest person I know. (If you're reading this you know who you are, you keep on rockin on ;) I'm going to get a phone call from my mother telling me "I don't have a Alexander Wang bag, it's Louis Vuitton." It's going to be tough bursting that bubble.

This area has a really good mix. There are strong pieces like the mirrored table and lamp that say 'chic and fresh' and then there's pieces that say the same thing the plaid skirt says: 'fearless of traditional (irish influenced prints).' We see that with the rug and rustic patio chair. Overall this space is a mix of trendy and traditional which is the best kind of mix. Check out that awesome magazine rack under the desk.

How ruggedly awesome is she? Her hair is perfectly messy with that scarf. The loose tee with the light layering makes it look like there was absolutely no time spent getting ready on her behalf. What I like about her is that she also feels a little boho which is always nice.

This space feels boho, comfortable and loungy. The area rug is soft enough for people to sit on and relax. Nothing in this space needs to be touched up, the pillows and couch are soft and casual. I love those light installations, they're so vintage. The beads in the background remind me of my childhood. I used to have those in my bedroom and then I got rid of them because they are probably the most inconvenient way to enter into a room ever.

Thrift Shop

Lincoln Road every other Sunday is a vintage dream. It's full of furniture pieces and art with tons of character and potential. I needed to be there at 9am because it was the last show til October so naturally I woke up at 630 so I can have my three 16 ounce cups of coffee. I had really high hopes for the day that were later crushed by my crying baby who thinks throwing cheerios in my eyes is the same as just telling me no.

So let's start with wholesalers, Micheal and Judy. They have an awesome collection of vintage furniture, "Strictly Modern Gallery," and I always find something (except this time.)

Those red chairs were $350 for both, yes you heard right, for both.

Look at that beautiful bad ass leather rocking chair. The crystal lamp behind the chair was $300.

I wanted this vignette for my home, but I would have to add literal space to my apartment to find a place for that. The upholstery was freshly done by the dealers, love it.

I love this bookshelf so much. I convinced myself it would be perfect for books and bought it, then later returned it because the seller specifically told me the glass shelves can't hold more than 10 pounds and books would kill these shelves anyway. I want to give a shout out to my husband, thank you for your constant support in favor of not buying this bookshelf. And by constant support I mean literally constantly telling me "Chana you should not buy that."

The seller of this bookshelf is Tony of Acme Mantiques. He is a really nice guy who can pretty much do anything to wood for anyone asking.

This lamp is also from Acme Mantiques and is so much better in person. It's so graphic, big and beautiful.

When you're thrift shopping there are treasures and then there are things like this:

It will never matter how cheap you got this stone dragon/gargoyle piece, it will always be a bad purchase and one you should deeply regret.

You think this would be too much for a candy jar?

While I find these two pictures intriguing I knew they were a cue for me to start heading home.

I think this fish that's attached to a wooden board was targeted for really eccentric Jews who are looking for a centerpiece on Rosh Hashana- and that's a stretch.

Pre-owned trolls..... It might seem cute and nostalgic at first but the reality will set in and you'll be left with a troll.

I like this water painting a lot. It's mysterious and soft and exotic, I would love this in a den. The framing is nice too.

Large ceramic grapes are one of the coolest and most flexible decorative objects you can ask for. They can be placed or draped on almost anything and they always look good.

Are these dressers amazing? Yes they most certainly are. I wanted these dressers for myself but unfortunately I already purchased two dressers from IKEA. It was a lucky day for someone else (bastard.)

Sneak Peak

I know I haven't made a post in a while but I promise you it's because I've been busy. I'm working on two projects right now, both bedrooms, and they're not ready yet but I want to give you guys a sneak peak. That way you can decide if it's worth it for you to come back and check it out. My first client is an out-of-this-world gorgeous girl who's funny and smart. She's one of those laid back teenagers who uses cool words like 'awesome' and puts pictures of starbucks coffee up on instragram. She's just overall very cool. So I was asked to come redesign her room and make it feel more soft and urban and less green and "blah." I'm very excited about her room; it's bohemian, soft and a little eclectic.
Her requirements:
- New linen
- Floor mirror
- New light fixture
- New lamp
- New bedside table
- Floor pillows
- Seating for people
- Paint job
- Overall amazing-ness in the room

I can't show you pictures of the room from before because I was told under strict instructions not to, but I can show you my plans for the room (if you're reading this, you know who you are, you're welcome and I told you you can trust me.)

My Solution:

The paint is Benjamin Moore Portland Gray. It's a warm gray that adds so much to the room. The sheets are soft, colorful and so pretty. The print on the wall is going to be an accent piece behind the beds, the light fixture from West Elm is pure gorgeous. The gold knobs in the corner are going to be used for the closet in the room, the chair with the sheep skin and the metallic pillows are for lounging. This bedroom is almost done and I'm so excited about it. The client has mentioned to me that she's excited too so we're all on the same page. Yay for agreement.

My second client is a beautiful woman, a financial adviser who lives in Brickell and has absolutely no time to create her dream bedroom; so in comes me and you can judge if that's a good thing or bad thing.
Her requirements:
- A new bed frame
- A new night stand
- A space for all her accessories and bags etc
- A mirror
- Add some life to the space

The starting point:

My Solution:

The headboard is a slate grey suede that is really tall and will be the perfect scale for the height of the room. The sheets and bedding will be white and simple. The wall color is a soft grey that will balance well to all the light that comes into the room, the curtains are cream with a metallic glaze that will add texture and romance to the room.

I decided to wallpaper one wall and add shelves with a mirror for all her accessories. That will be her zone in the morning to see everything she has and keep things organized.

The pillows and plant add color and life to the room and the light fixture is modern and tribal, I love it. This project is still in the concept process and I'll update you once I get to the next phase....

She hasn't called me back though and I'm pretty sure that's a bad sign. My mother said maybe she didn't have reception for the last week or maybe she just hasn't had a chance to check her phone yet. I'm sure neither of those two options are true or even possible. If I don't talk about this job again it means she still hasn't looked at her phone.

We're Interpreting Style

I decided to start doing monthly installments of the post "interpreting style," for those of you who haven't read that post, click here. Every 4 weeks or so I'm going to put together a post based on the original due to popular demand (and by popular demand I mean I heard someone say the word "style" last week.) The reason I decided to do this is because I feel like this type of post best represents what this blog is all about; design, style and observations.
So let's begin the challenge of finding the homes of these stylish people;

Here's a woman who looks cool and laid back. I love her round sunglasses and the color palette. She looks like a modern yoko ono only instead of being a bad influence on the Beatles she has no influence on the Beatles. This is where she lives:

This living space feels stripped and exposed in a good way with the concrete floor, the fireplace and the exposed brick wall. This room has the same message as the modern yoko, "I exude style minimally."

The first thing we see about this woman is that it doesn't seem like she's wearing a bra. The second thing we know is that she likes to wear multiple earrings in each ear. The third thing we know is she's pure chic. She's wearing just a t shirt, sunglasses with her hair pulled and looks like she could be attending a fashion show for Celine. When she does head back home, this is probably where she will end up:

This feels fresh, simple, uplifting, natural and crisp. I love this space. This is a good example of editing at its best; knowing when to stop. The bra-less woman and this interior have restraint but not severity in common.

This woman is about textures, shapes and being naturally amazing. Let's guess which room she belongs to:

Close, but no. This dining room is sophisticated and has edge with all the brass but it doesn't belong to her, it belongs to her:

Ah yes, the glamorous, goth-like, boho, lady like, sleek woman. She's bold and delicate, like the dining room with high gloss black walls and a crystal chandelier.

So the woman in the killer leather jacket lives here:

This bedroom is perfection, it's designed by Nam Dang Mitchell. It has a masculine feel with sturdy grounding furniture pieces. I love the form of the two arm sconce (Serge Mouille). This is a really good combination.

Who do we think is waiting behind this door?

These are amazing brass and steel doors; Doesn't get much better than this.

So who is waiting behind that burnt orange door?

She's relaxed and a little boho. I love that necklace and the earth tones of this outfit. Although I do feel like it may be a challenge for her to see anything.

Where has this woman escaped from? Maybe she's running away from Tim Allen in 'Jungle 2 Jungle.'

I think that's a safe assumption.

This is where she'll find refuge from Tim Allen. It's peaceful, full of nature and light.

Hmm... she seems interesting. I wonder where she lives...

She lives in a fantasy ti pee in the corner of her brownstone apartment in Brooklyn; very native.

Oops, I forgot I don't want to know where she spends her time, moving on.

Wow.. this woman looks incredible and she also looks very angry, she probably hasn't sniffed a carbohydrate in ten years.

This kitchen is by Jean Louis Deniot, one of my favorite french designers. This is a prefect kitchen for someone who's goal is to not eat.

I love this jacket with the leather arms, shows the importance of detail. She pulls off that gray wool hat really well. I like this Annie Hall feel that's going on here.....

This space by Sally Wheat is so perfect. It's an effortless mix of styles and feels classic. The floor lamp, the graffiti painting, the wood panels on the wall all equal classic edge.
The perfect way to end a perfect post........ ok, a nearly perfect post....... a great post? How about, a perfect way to end a mediocre post? Sounds accurate.

How To Get That Look

So you flip through a magazine and see tons of pictures of rooms you love. So you fold the tip of the page in hopes of someday creating something just as special in your own home. Two years later that page is still folded and your hopes have some what lessened. How do we translate those beautiful rooms into our every day lives so we can really enjoy it? "That's a good question Chana, I'm glad you asked. I thought this was going to be just another post of gorgeous rooms and George Clooney..."
Look who is full of surprises...
When trying to recreate something you're inspired by, the key is not to get stuck on the individual pieces but the feelings of the space and aim for something similar.
So let's start with this area:

This is a dining room that feels earthy and light with a little touch of tribal edge. Let's get the look:

This is earthy, natural with some tribal punch. The woods I used here are darker than the woods in the picture above, but the feel for the room is the same. The dining table is from CB2, the cowhide is from IKEA and so is that plant. The black and white print is from Crate&Barrel. Once you know the feeling you're looking for, it's much easier to find pieces at affordable prices and put them together. When first looking at the first picture, it may seem unattainable, but it's not. Recognize the vibe of the space, and slowly build up with pieces that are in your price range.

This is a bohemian minimalist look taken from Vogue. The chairs aren't matching, the flowers and vases are different shapes and textures. It feels bohemian because every piece looks like it was collected and thought about over time. Although the room feels free spirited, it's not all over the place. Let's get the look:

So this is the bohemian, clean look. The space needed to feel collected and eccentric but with simple lines. I added the black curtains for the warmth and the depth. The console and red chair are from West Elm, the lamp and dining table are from IKEA. Does this feel bohemian minimal to you? (Please feel free to leave comments at the end.)

Almost everyone I speak to can use a small work space in their apartments/homes. A space for the computer, laptop, mail and other gadgets. It's not hard to make it look stylish either, let's get the look:

The table is from IKEA and the chair is from Overstock, you'd be surprised at the stylish affordable things you can find there. The wall accessories are CB2. This look has the cozy, intimate feeling that we liked from the picture above but has a little more "downtown" to it which I think works. If you want to stick to the airier version, you can just switch out the black cowhide, that will change everything:

You see? It changes everything....

This vignette is a beautiful example of the 'Palm Springs retro' thing. It's basically the same as mid century but with a lot more cactus and desert. I love the shaggy rug, the funky shaped chair and iron base table. Everything works well together and doesn't feel exaggerated. Let's get the look:

Welcome to Palm Springs baby. I'll admit if I would of put a picture of palm trees or lots of sand it would be more convincing but I wanted to focus on the furniture choices. The rug is from IKEA, console and lamp, West Elm. I like this interpretation because it feels authentic and clean. Sticking to a neutral color palette was key, how does this feel to you?

Designers and George Clooney, Naturally

There are designers that I like, there are designers I don't mind and then there are designers that I LOVE. I want to share those designers with you so you can be a better person with a fuller life because that's what design does for a person. :) There are actors that I don't mind, will tolerate or that I LOVE. One of those actors is George Clooney. I'm fluttering my eyelashes, can you tell? So with every designer I love, there's an angle of George Clooney that I love, and today I will be sharing all those designers and angles with you.

These two designers created what we know today as Rawlins Calderone Design. With Johns past experience of working for Tucci and Athenas knowledge from NYs Parsons, these two are sooo good. I love the grittiness of it all and I love how youthful all their work feels.

Love all the cool tones, feels so masculine and sexy.

This is a duplex penthouse in NYC. It has an awesome vibe, it's sophisticated and laid back. The colors are muted but still really strong and it reminds me of this George:

This is a rugged, laid back George. This was the time George and I were sharing a laugh.

Designer- Robert Stilin
Robert Stilin has built a reputation for himself as a versatile designer with beautifully classic work. The baseline of his work is always sturdy, well made neutral pieces with layers of modern shapes. I think the reason I love him most is because everything he does feels easy and comfortable which ultimately what you want for your home.

The light fixture on top of the table and chairs.... take a minute.

Even though there's a sculpture made of wire, this seating arrangement still feels classic.

Great vignette, it's simple and to the point.

Like Robert Stilin, George has this classic american style that is always current, never stale. It's just too good.

Designer- Steven Volpe
Steven Volpe Designs has a unique way of creating spaces that feel lived in and thought out. His style is spacious and modern with perfect craftsmanship. His spaces also always feel airy and light and I love that. I also appreciate how he doesn't shy away from being grand and luxurious.

How good is this? Every color and shape compliment each other.

This is so sleek and severe- perfect.

Meet sleek George Clooney. This was the first time he and I met eyes. His eyes were saying "Where have you been all my life.." My eyes were answering, "On a couch, watching all your movies, eating ice cream."

Designer- Waldo Fernandez
Waldo studied architecture and design at UCLA which was followed by a job as a set designer. (that's a really good turn of events) With a showroom he started in 1974 and a celebrity client list, it's impossible to look away from his work. For me a big pull towards his work is his mix of colors and patterns. He really inspires me.

A curved brown sectional couch at its best.

This room is bright and grounded. I love the rug which was an amazing choice. This room is humble but grabs all of your attention.

This George grabs all of your attention. This is a good choice for George when I finally introduce him to all my friends and family. It's a big step, don't want to rush into anything.

Designer- Nate Berkus
Nate's style is sophisticated without being intimidating. I love how he puts things together. I fell in love with his work because it has a 70's retro feel to it which is my favorite.

Even those beige shoes look good.

How perfect are these?? Theyre perfection but still feel approachable and humble. Like him:

George, don't look at me like that... I'm just not ready for you to meet my family, relax. (Do you believe this guy?)

Designers- Daniel Suduca & Thierry Merillou
These two paired up and create amazingly interesting galleries of their collections and that's what I love about them.

I have no words, I absolutely love this space. It really makes my heart stop, I may need a doctor.

Yes, he seems more than qualified. I feel better now, let's run away together.

New Year New You

The new year is a time to reflect on the past year and think about what we could have done better and what we can improve on in the new year. It's a time full of hope and possibilities; that will probably turn into disappointment because the year changed but it didn't change who we are. So I put together a list of tips that you can use at home. Where to invest, how to create a mood and what to embrace. Be prepared for a resourceful, information packed, blow your mind type of post. If you would like to take a quick snooze before you start, I advise that you do.

TIP ONE: Invest In A Good Sofa
A great sofa does so much for a home. It invites people to sit and relax. It connects people together. It's a place to bond after a long day, watch a movie or tv. It's something we use all the time in the home and is totally worth the investment.

This is s space designed by Nate Berkus (his collection for Target was the worst thing for me. My husband has officially banned me from that store. I have never found more reason to go buy febreze and bananas) The sofa is a tuxedo sofa designed by Milo Baughman. It's classic in form, comfortable because of the depth so so stylish. I love a good tuxedo.

Here's a leather tuxedo, a little more traditional and masculine.

The sectional... hold on one second I just dropped dead. The sectional is a perfect piece for a living room. There's enough seating for family and guests so you don't need to pretend to be comfortable sitting on the floor. "Sit on the couch, I love sitting on the floor. I choose the floor over the couch even when you're not here." It's inviting and so versatile.

So this is a combination of my two favorite things, sectionals and velvet. Love it! (I said that in a really high pitched voice) This space is designed by Jessica Helgerson.

Yea, this is is the mamma bear of sectional sofas and I need her lovin.

TIP TWO: Dress Up Your Walls
Choosing a piece of art or photograph for your home can be very overwhelming. You're saying "This piece completely represents me and my style," and that can seem like a big commitment. What you need to keep in mind is that it's not permanent, if you don't like it after one week you can always take it down and change it for something else. Once you start playing around, you'll find what you're looking for. The hard part is always starting.

This gallery wall is really simple and striking. I love the abstract figures and the creativity behind it. Gorgeous.

This canvas relays the message very well.

I love a gallery wall that incorporates objects as well. It feels so lived in and personal. The big black and white picture gives a great vintage vibe.

TIP THREE: Make Time to Sit And Eat
Everyone always seems to be so busy. Whether we're doing something or not, we're talking about it or taking a picture of it. It's nice to incorporate a time to sit, eat and talk. Even if it's once a week, just sit down and listen to all the complaints from your family.

Speaking of vintage vibes, this seating nook really does that with the small framed black and whites. I love the retro feel. The rounded leather bench is a perfect choice for interaction.

Gorgeous color combination... I absolutely love it. The woods, golds and deep purple is killer together. I would talk and eat here all day, (more eating than talking but who's keeping track?)

This is great for large families because of the ample amount of seating. This is the type of area that is constantly in use. There's so much warmth here, I love it.

Sitting down with family or friends and talking face to face instead of screen to screen is something we should all take on this new year. Ten minutes go by and I've already "liked" something on facebook and instagram. Sometimes I'm even "liking" pictures I've put up myself. (Insert embarrassed emoticon here.)

TIP FOUR: First Impressions Count
This year pay more attention to your entry way, even if it's a wall. Take advantage and create an area for a drop zone and something personal. These are the moments that stick with people and make your house your home.

This is the entry way in designer Angie Hranowskys home. There's not a lot going on but when walking in the person feels so much. The beautiful large scale photo of the shell, the marble wall and the geometric wall divider. Angie is sending a message through shapes and forms. And the message is "my home is better than your home, deal with it."

This is an entrance vignette done by Daniel Romualdez. I love the glamorous attitude it has. It is simple and just pure design.

How awesome is this? I would use profanity now but my mother is my only follower and I'm too vulnerable to lose her right now. I feel so adventurous just looking at this entry way, imagine walking through it. It's rustic, abstract, bold and perfect. This is the entry way of Trina Turks' home.

TIP FIVE: Embrace Leather
Leather edges up any room and makes it look cooler. It gives you the freedom to mix patterns and eras and helps keep a space gender neutral.

So there's a lot of leather here but it's an example of different ways to use leather: poufs and armchairs. A great thing about leather poufs is that they're indestructible. There's no amount of wine, water, dirt or kicking around that can harm it.

Hides are really useful tools for adding grittiness to a room. This room already feels light and airy; imagine it without the grounding of the hide. Anyone can add a hide to a room; it's the easiest and cheapest way to start.

Look what the hide does for this room. Designers like Kelly Wearstler and Miles Redd haven't decorated a space without leather, it's the secret weapon for a cool space. Remember that a little goes a long way.

This is another masterpiece done by Daniel Romualdez (crush of the moment). Do you see what the leather chairs do for the space? It adds so much edginess.

TIP SIX: Black Is The New Black
I don't believe it went anywhere, but for those of you who thought color is all the rage, it's time to let black into your life.

This is a girl who is embracing black and rocking it.

What's better than two gorgeous girls together? Two gorgeous girls together wearing black. (You saw that one coming)

A black backdrop for a gallery wall is so striking. From the picture above you can see it really elevates the room. (Btw notice the hide on the floor...works every time.)

Another black backdrop. Take my advice, choose a wall to paint black now so in a month when your neighbors start doing it, you can smirk and nod your head at them, all condescending.

Working black with boho is so cool. Kate Moss is doing it here and so can you. Just buy yourself a wool hat from Zara and pair it with anything black.

I hope you enjoyed the tips. Watch out 2013, I'm going to kick your ass! If 2013 knows anything, it's not threatened by me. It knows it's in for a year of sweatpants, ice cream, mood swings, anxiety about bed bugs, fear of new things, fear of old things, Fox's New Girl, (I'm not getting anything for that shout out. I still don't have consistent followers) fear of having conversations with acquaintances and a lot of "I can't go out tonight, I have nothing to wear."

5 Reasons to Love Kelly Wearstler

Everyone knows who I'm talking about. If you don't, it's time to step out from under the rock you've been living and start to see the light. Kelly Wearstler is an interior designer turned designer, with her own ready-to-wear collection. She's collaborated with The Rug Company and Bergdorf Goodman and Lee Jofa and is soon to launch a signature line of wallpaper and trims with the brand. She has published four books based on her talents and inspirations: Modern Glamour: The Art of Unexpected Style, Domicilium Decoratus, and Rhapsody. She has been very busy. So now that we're all intimidated and full of self hatred, let's begin.

Reason One: She Knows How To Mix
Kelly has an unmistakable style with every space having a sense of adventure. She mixes furniture pieces from different periods, with different stones and woods. Kelly layers pattern over pattern like a master.

There's the floor, the console and then the walls. It all 100 percent works. Genius.

How does she layer three completely different patterns and textures and make them each shine without outshining each other? Maybe if I knew I would be able to land myself a job, just a thought.

We get it Kelly, you're so beautiful and so talented. Let's keep moving.

Reason Two: She Has Conquered It All
Kelly has worked with the Rug Company to design her own line of 8 rugs which are all more gorgeous than the next.

Reason Three: She's Designed The Best Hotels
The Avalon in Beverly Hills and the Viceroy Hotels and Resorts set the bar for hip, glamorous and modern hotels. Kelly mixes roman heads with shag rugs with vintage Italian style pieces.

The Avalon in Beverly Hills. I would be the person leaving with a chair literally falling out of my hand luggage. "What, this? That's my turquoise leather chair. You didn't see me come in with it? I'm pretty sure I came in with this chair."

Imagine checking in next to that half head. My husband would not be able to take his hands off that thing and as a result would be asked to leave. That wouldn't be surprising after I tried sneaking out with a chair in my bag. Obviously my husband and I are very classy people.

Reason Four: She Has an Incredible Collection
If her interiors make you want to come back to earth again as Kelly Wearstler herself, then her collection will only do you more harm.

Her collection does such a great job bringing her aesthetic from interiors to the ready-to-wear. Even her manikins have attitude, almost as much as I do before my first coffee.

Reason Five: She Creates Amazing Residences
Obviously anyone would live in any one of the homes Kelly has designed. They are so outrageously over the top without actually being too much; an ability Kelly has mastered. I would even be happy to live outside on the corner of these homes, anyone with me on that?

This is a home she did in Malibu. I love how the space feels appropriate for being on the coast and not being "coastal."

A Color Scheme From Disney

When designing a room the first thing to consider is the color scheme. The colors are the starting point of a room and help create the feeling and message of a space. Limit your color choices to 8, otherwise it wont really be a color scheme, just a bunch of different colors. Start off by choosing the neutrals and work your way into color. When I look for inspiration I turn to the past. I look for new ways to interpret what has inspired me. In this case, I'm turning way back to Disney classics like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and Tarzan. FYI I think Rosie O'donells best role was playing the baby gorilla in Tarzan. So for those of you who feel uninspired, let's start with my all time favorite:

The Little Mermaid

At first glance this is Ariel talking about how she's falling in love with a man she saw through a hole in a boat, a true depiction of reality. But at a closer look, this is a really soft & feminine color palette. You start with the blues and lilacs which are soft cool tones and add the warmer textures. This is how I would translate the picture above into a color palette:

So I've used five colors, the lilac pink, maroon red, lavender blue, a baby blue and aqua green. These colors set the tone for this soft, feminine and sophisticated palette. The chandelier, the plant, the paintings incorporate the colors and bring them together. It feels organic and delicate, and I like how the red and green feel against the soft cool colors. This would be really pretty for a dinette in a kitchen with natural light. So if anyone ever comes over to you and asks for a color palette inspired by the little mermaid, have confidence in knowing you can make it happen :)

Looking back Ursula got a lot of slack because she was the "sea witch" and wanted to trick Ariel into being her slave for life, yadda yadda yadda... From her perspective Ariel was a 16 year old princess who spent her time talking to a Jamaican crab and combing her hair with a fork. Doesn't sound like someone I would spend my time with.
Ursula had her own den, she had powers and she was rocking the flipped mohawk way before Pink or Miley Cyrus.

This color palette is dark, deep and sensual. Here's my interpretation:

I chose purples and black with some grey. This is mysterious and dark like Ursula.The plants remind me of Ursula's eel side kicks so I added them, they also look really good. This color palette would be suited well for a dining room where there's intimate dinners and some drinking. It would also be a good match for a master bedroom.

Aladdin

Jasmine with her pet tiger Raja and her father, the sultan; such a cute little man. But ultimately jasmine wanted a man unlike her father- homeless barely dressed and best friends with a monkey.

This would be a place for the modern day jasmine. The palette has a lot of blues with white and gold. This feels elegant and young. Instead of going all out with the expected, I used some restraint. I like the softness from the colors and textures mixed with the toughness of the gold and tiger. (I couldn't leave the tiger out.) This palette would be good for a home office or a teenager's bedroom because it would transition well into adult hood.

Beauty and the Beast

So I'm sure this has happened to many of us. We go on a horse ride, end up trapped in a castle with a beast and fall in love with him over a snow fight. I can't tell you how many people I know with stories like that. The thing to do after falling in love is attend a ball in a castle and invite no one else- obviously.

Beauty and the beast is romantic, dark and traditional.

This feels regal and rich, by adding the Rothko there's a darkness that reminds me of the castle. The colors are blue, deep red and gold. I love the mix of pieces, the chairs are very ornate and detailed while the Saarinen table is pure and simple. The candlesticks give a nod to the past and the chandelier is more present. This is a good palette for a more grand dining area, one that's used once a year for Thanksgiving.

The Lion King

How good was this movie? It was so touching and funny and entertaining, I fell in love with Simba. I don't know how that would work but I did have a crush on a cartoon lion cub for a while.

I used a soft natural color palette. This feels tribal and earthy but it's not in your face, it's more of a feeling. The peacock mirror is glamorous and still feels undone because of the mat finish. I love this palette because it's so versatile. You can use this in a nursery or a den; it would work perfectly in both.

Tarzan

Ah yes, the swinging, undressed man. This palette is light and natural. It feels exotic and exciting. There's a man getting around using a rope miles high in the air, of course it feels exciting.

This palette uses mostly natural colors, the tan leather chair, banana leaf wallpaper, wood side table. This would be so cool for a library. Do people still have libraries? So if you don't have a library (I don't even have a shelf dedicated to books) you can use this palette in a living room. It would definitely work well.

The Mini LIfe

It's really important for a child to have their own space where they feel comfortable to spend their time. I'm starting to design my baby's room (she's just 10 months now but it's never too early) and the process got me thinking about childrens' rooms in general. You want to give them a space to imagine, read, play and relax. If we make them feel like they have their own space maybe they'll spend less time in our space..... there's always dreaming :)
So here are some tips to create a fun and functional room for the little ones:

TIP 1: Find Fun Ways to Display Their Art

This display looks clean, simple and sophisticated so it doesn't need to be limited to the "kid zone." It also allows for an easy way to add or take away pictures/art for a quick change up. This is definitely a better alternative to putting the art work on your fridge until it's socially acceptable to slip it in the garbage.

A gallery wall of your kids art is also a perfect show case for their talents. It makes them feel special to know that their work is framed and hung up for all of "mommy and daddys" friends to see. It can motivate them to try harder the next time the teacher says "lets get out our paint brushes."

This is really cute because it also incorporates the chalk board wall. I know it's being done everywhere, but when something's good it's good.

This is a good option if you don't want to commit to an entire wall of finger painting. Choose one or two pieces that you like and incorporate it with other things.

TIP 2: Don't Underestimate the Power of Light

This is so cute and whimsical. It's perfect for a kids room and they're a good option if your child is afraid of the dark. You can find the lights at this uniquely funky website- fancy.

So these sweet lights are from Ikea. This is a really cute idea for a girls room or nursery. The wall mural of the tall grass adds a lot to the lights but they're cute even without it.

So not only is this light cute, functional and completely adorable; it can also be used to keep your child company when you need some "mommy time." It's a win-win. Another treasure I found at fancy.

Awwww, how cute is this lamp? It's by Jonathon Adler and you can find it over here. Every time I look at this lamp I tilt my head and say 'aw.' I really need to stop looking at this lamp because my neck is starting to hurt.

TIP 3: Make a Reading Nook

So this is probably in the 'theatrical' reading nook category so don't be so quick to raise your expectations of reading nooks. This is a gorgeous little spot though for you and your children. I love those palm leaves, so cute.

This is more of a reading room. I love how it feels like a shabby chic library for little kids. Who wouldn't want to spend their time reading in here? (Or playing interactive games on an ipad)

This is really cozy and really attainable for most rooms. Find a little corner or any floor space, put some pillows down with a stack of books and tell your kids "it's a reading nook. Just sit on the pillows and start reading..... open up the book and turn the pages. No it's not an ipad, you're going to need to use both your index finger and your thumb. I saw it on pinterest, please let this happen for me."

TIP 4: Surround Them With Good Thoughts and Education

I love this idea. These are good words to live by for an adult and it's perfect for a child to read that every day. Kids are so sensitive to their surroundings and what they're told. This is a really good message.

If your child hates geography class, you should try this. They can get to know the world in a casual setting plus it looks great.

Good use of color and words. This is a more mature color word poster. I didn't know what color indigo was til last year.

This is another great way to mix educational and stylish.

TIP 5: Let Their Imaginations Run Wild

This has got to be the coolest kids space in the world. I think this passes for the coolest space for adults. I love the walls of chalk, the striped carpet, the orange lounge chairs. This is a perfect space for the kids to be themselves and keep busy for hours (or minutes if we're being realistic.)

So this is pretty awesome. This is something you can do with your daughter that you would both enjoy. Each cube is a different room... really fun.

This room is so vibrant. All the toys, the big scale pictures, bean bags. Children or babies would have a really good time in this room.

This is really fun. You also don't need a room for this just a doorway and who doesn't love a good puppet show? (Don't answer that question, not the point of the picture.)

A lot of the time when you ask someone to describe their style, they'll say "Well.. I love the way blue looks with black but then I also really love how blue looks with white, it's so calming. But I could totally see myself in a room full of pink. I don't know, I like so many things...." You're standing there asking yourself if you're still having this conversation. Didn't they know it was more of a rhetorical question, like when you ask someone how they're doing or if they need help.

How to create balance

Balance in a home is everything. I believe balance is the foundation and everything comes after that. Every object or furniture piece needs to have it's moment. For example hanging a picture on the wall. If you hang a picture too high the wall will feel "top heavy." You don't want to hang it too low because it will start to resemble a pear shape. You want it right in the middle, at eye level so you can comfortably experience the picture. Balance is a lot about symmetry but it's also about knowing the sweet spot for things to shine.
I would say the fastest and most effective way to achieve balance would be to place an Olsen twin on either side of an object.

I really think I'm on to something here.

This is a pretty classic and traditional use of symmetry. It's simple- place a lamp on either side of the console table. It's the color combination of the black&white with the yellow that makes it interesting. Plus the fact that there's a giant cockatoo leaning on the wall, whatever.

By placing every picture above the chair, it's using repetition to create a sense of balance. The table on a slant adds a more casual feel.

An easy way for balance is placing two chairs facing each other. In this space, the chairs are a tan against all that gorgeous violet-blue. It wouldn't work if there was only one chair, the balance comes from there being two.

What? You said more olsen twins? Sure I have more olsen for you.

"What do the Olsen twins have to do with balance in a room?" I'm still trying to push my idea of placing them in homes for balance. I know they have a lot on their plate, so I'm going to need some support to make this happen.

A chair on each side of the table anchors this vignette. The chandelier is in a good spot, if it were hanging from the middle it would feel typical. This feels unexpected and works with the flowers in middle of the table.

Perfection. This feels so balanced because of all the symmetry. The mix of simple and 70's really works and the harmony of the two make it feel so calming.

This is a beautiful, daring room. This is proof that mixing patterns work SO well when done to the right scale. (I didn't mean for the word 'so' to be that big, I just wanted a little emphasis. There was no shouting involved when writing this.) It also proves that balance is a must for a peaceful space. The pair of leopard stools with that drapery and photo hanging right in the middle is executed just right.

I hope you all have a well deserved well balanced weekend. I'm actually hoping to go out this weekend. I'm a little nervous because it's been a while. Things have probably changed, like is it acceptable to do the robot on the dance floor?
Am I allowed to look excited to be out?
If I wear sunglasses inside the club and trip, will people still think I'm cool because I'm wearing sunglasses?
How much skin do I need to show, is a three quarter sleeve enough?
If I cover my mouth while I yawn will people still notice I'm yawning?
When people say 'Geek chic,' are they referring to sexy reading glasses or a sweatshirt with a unicorn? Because i have both...

5 Reasons I Love Emily Henderson

So we all know Emily Henderson. She's the host of the show 'Secrets from a Stylist.' She's blonde, funny and rocks the flair bottom jeans like no other. She first came into our lives while competing on HGTV's 'Design Star' (there hasn't been a better season yet.) I love her designs and style and I just want to shout it from the front of a boat with my arms spread- Leonardo DiCaprio style. So I came up with my five top reasons for being in love with Emily.

REASON ONE: She is so talented.
She really stood out for me in her seasons' finale of the glass house challenge. The challenge was to create a space from, you guessed it, a glass box. Really intimidating. I get overwhelmed thinking about how to design a small studio apartment with actual walls- this was glass. Do you know how hard it is to make four glass walls and a roof look warm? Neither do I but Emily does:

At first glance you dont even realise its a glass box, you just see all this amazing-ness.

REASON TWO: She has the best style.
Everything she touches has a certain signature look, trademark Em. (Sometimes I shorten her name to Em so its easier for me to pretend we're good friends.) She has the perfect balance of old and new, she does vintage like no one else. She's like this mix of thrifty, boho, modern, 70s glam.

Beautiful blue- which has also sort of become a signature color for her. I love this office. I would get a job just for this office.

Emily's guest room.

This lamp. I still don't know how she even got this lamp into her house being married. My husband would of stopped it at the door like customs. 'Do you have anything you want to declare? What's in the bag? No no no no no..' So not only do I love the lamp I love that its in her living room for her and her husband to see.

REASON THREE: She is really pretty.

See, I told you she's really pretty.

REASON FOUR: She has the best tv show.
The best part about her show, Secrets from a Stylist, is the process Emily uses. She brings all her clients into her design studio where she then gives them a design diagnostic. (Emily knows how to make the word diagnostic sound cool.)
She has door knobs, belts, platters, scarves in all different styles and has the client choose which one speaks to them. They are then given three words to sum up their style. The spaces she designs on her show always turn out perfect, always dead on with meeting the needs of the client. If you're not already watching the show shame on you it's brilliant. Watch it. No I'm not getting paid for this endorsement it's just that good.

A dining room she did, 'Mantique Minimalism.'

'Exotic Contemporary Comfort.' This was one of my favorites. I tried doing my own version of that abstract blue painting behind the couch, but it looked more like the aftermath of bad stomach problems.

'Untamed Modern Funk.' This one felt close to home. My mother loves tribal and funky things but my house did not look like this growing up. I'm pretty sure my mother took more of a literal approach to it, we just had elephants and giraffes actually move in with us.

'Mad Men Bohemian.' Another one of my favorites.

REASON FIVE: She's really funny.
The truth is I can't know this for sure because I've never actually met Emily. From what I watch, read and follow about her (I promise I'm not this weird stalker who walks around with binoculars) she is really funny. She's laid back, really easy going on her show and always ends off with something funny. Her blog is so good. She has a great style of writing, the best tips and gorgeous pictures. Fitting Elin Kling in your Home

I've been seeing Elin Kling everywhere. She's a Swedish model turned fashion blogger and she recently launched a collection for GUESS by Marciano in New York. She is always killing it with what she wears. She's gorgeous and super trendy so I thought it would be fun to match interiors to her outfits. She's all about the outfits and I'm all about the rooms.
So here's her by her launch party from last Thursday:

This get up is classic & really fresh. The look is tailored but feels effortless and easy going. She let the silhouette speak for itself and decided against accessories which I agree with. Elin would fit beautifully in this dining area:

This space has classic and iconic pieces with the Saarinen tulip table, tulip stools and chair. The mirror on the wall is more traditional but the space feels really effortless and laid back. The mismatched chairs make it inviting and nonjudgmental. The light fixture does the same to this space as the chevron pattern does to Elins jacket which is add the perfect amount of edge to something classic.

Elin looks like a groupie who lost her gang and ended up in the middle of the desert- and I LOVE it. I love the cut off shorts and her hat. She completely embodies a free spirit. If she ever finds her way home, this is probably where she would end up:

This space is really open and a big contributor to that is the floor to ceiling windows. Contrary to what it looks like outside (freezing cold) the living room has so much warmth to it. The coffee table and chair feel really natural and the throw adds some animal instinct. The space is minimal and feels free just like lost Elin in the desert.

If you cut her hair, switch the heels for high tops she would be Justin Bieber. I think this is awesome. I love how she turned boyish into chic, it totally suits her. She would sleep perfectly in this room:

The bed is low, easy to roll in and out off and with a life as busy as Elins that's important. The chair and storage/side table are school boy all the way. The large prints on the wall are hanging from paper clips instead of in frames which add to the boyish charm. It's simple and essential.

This outfit rocks. If I didn't know better I would think Elin is about to walk down the aisle towards Lenny Kravitz. Usually this color combination of cream and white feels feminine and delicate but she really mixed it up. She would look great sitting over here:

The black and white prints are all abstract and mysterious leaning towards the rock and roll aspect. The light fixture is not too big but the shape gives it interest and roughens things up slightly like Elins top.

This is gooood. She looks laid back and relaxed. The boots and bag are a little bohemian, the aviators pick up some vintage while the white tee and jeans are the classics. It's a really good mix, all these little touches add up to one too cool for school moment on a brownstone step. She would look just as good sitting in one of these chairs:

This space is a gorgeous in my dreams kind of mix. The cowhide is a perfect contrast to the mirrored coffee table. The patent black and white chairs are a touch of glamor without being in your face. Those platner chairs are staple pieces and the nude upholstery adds to the simplicity of them. The pillows play well into the bohemian side of things and it feels too cool for school as well.

I don't know a lot people who look this good when they're confused but I'm not complaining. That black knit falls perfectly with the right amount of slouch. And who needs a hair elastic when you can just hold your hair up like that in the wind? This kitchen & dining area would be a perfect backdrop:

I'm usually not a big fan of red, in any hue or tone but this burgundy is breathtaking. The light washed woods and whites are a cool compliment to the deep burgundy and black. This dining area feels light and also mysterious.

This is a new version of Olivia Newton John in Greese. This look is confident and cool and because it's monochromatic in black it's very strong. The shape of the leather jacket compliments that strength & gives it a little softness. This vignette would be perfect for her:

The black and gold combination is always amazing. The painting in the background is a great way to offset the straight lines of the bag and lamp. Olivia had John Travolta next to her bed but this will have to do for the side of Elins bed...

I don't know what she was in middle of doing but she really doesn't need to finish it because she looks great like this. I love the black with white high tops.
She looks like she's channeling a Matrix vibe. It feels a little futuristic like this nook:

I know I just said 'futuristic' and then showed a picture with Cherner table and chairs, but it works. The legs of the table and chairs are so simply tapered they look like they're floating. The chandelier and the shelved photo frames feel modern and forward thinking. This space belongs to Elin when she wears that black draped trench coat. They both took pieces from the past and brought them to the future.

Over all I think Elin would probably fit in almost any interior, but I'm confident I chose right :) What do you think..

I Like Australia and I Can not Lie

I just came back from my month long trip to Australia where I grew up and yes it is as beautiful as people say. My parents actually live in Melbourne so I was there visiting. I had the time of my life and took a lot of pictures for you all :) The weather was perfect, the shopping was AMAZING, cant wait to share it all with you so I'm going to start the sharing right now.
Every Sunday there's street markets along the beach so naturally I checked it out and took some pictures

Here's one of the artists. She was standing there painting this beautiful work, love it. She was using a blade to apply the paint on the canvas like that.

How awesome are these paintings? I wanted to bring them home so badly. I love each and every one of them.
