For this latest project, the interiors of an <a href="http://www.liveyachting.com/international-shipyard-ancona-isa-launches-super-yacht-isa-630" target="_blank">ISA 63m</a>, Knowles was asked to create a tropical feel that would match the balmy climes through which the yacht would cut a swath. His latest and greatest designs will be on view at the <a href="http://www.showmanagement.com/" target="_blank">Fort Lauderdale Boat Show</a> from October 28th through November 1st. The Hungarian-born interior designer has set up the gallery to showcase Hungarian and Austrian antiques, and furnishings and decorative arts of the Art Deco, Secessionist and Bauhaus eras. Inspired by her birthplace of Budapest, Hoffman loves combing Hungary for Modernist design elements. The clean, sensual lines; gorgeous native woods; and fine detailing make Hoffman's take on curating furnishings a winning one. Imagine my delight in seeing the newest from Waterworks Studio, a collection of towels, bath products and accessories worthy of their glorious namesake, inspired by pieces found in glorious late 19th and early 20th century bathrooms.  </p> <p>I'm particularly mad for the just launched Sculpted Subway bath towels that feature charming raised historic square tiles (available as a shower curtain too) imbedded into towels. The creations flowing from this lauded designer's genius seem to be growing more organic, personable and sophisticated with each passing year, and it's such a marvelous process to watch. One of the most exciting pieces of news to come out of his studio is that he's collaborating with an impressive list of British artisans to bring even more whimsey and inventiveness to the rooms he's designing, including Adrian King and Chris Thorpe, <a href="http://www.raptureandwright.co.uk/" target="_blank">Rapture & Wright</a>, <a href="http://www.veedonfleece.com/" target="_blank">Veedon Fleece</a>, <a href="http://www.hourglass.uk.com/" target="_blank">Hourglass</a>, and <a href="http://www.fireflylightingdesign.com/home" target="_blank">Firefly Lighting</a>. We'll see Johnny Grey studio designer <a href="http://www.johnnygrey.com/about/leila-ferraby.html" target="_blank">Leila Byrne's</a> manifestation of Grey's new cottage kitchen at Decorex, as well as Swiss manufacturer <a href="http://www.vzug.com/global/gb" target="_blank">V-Zug's</a> steam oven and induction hobs.</p> <p>His inspiration seems to know no bounds, enveloping themes as diverse as film and literature. Here's his take on some of his newest works: "Seeing the early progress on the cooking island made me realize that we have created a piece of furniture that could almost have come out of the <em>Lord of the Rings</em> trilogy--with its craggy burr oak panels and glowing textured glass inserts, it belongs in the middle kingdom! The Tree Corner cupboard could have been included in a set from <em>Swiss Family Robinson</em>. "It has taken me all this time to bring it to fruition. It is made from Holly, a tree grown in my garden, and it has a mesh front making it perfect for use as a larder. It is partly inspired by the Japanese idea of Wahi-Sabi--the enjoyment of imperfection and a celebration of natural forms; a protest against the souless, slick hard-edged designs and furniture that so many cabinet companies offer. I also like the idea of it being visibly made by hand, not machine-made, its organic shape being sensual and unpredictable." Needless to say we're all in for some amazing surprises next week. When I exited the elevator in penthouse two, the attendant said, “The Weeds den is to your right and the Californiacation room is to your left; drinks in the middle.” Now that’s my kind of penthouse! The building itself—<a href="http://www.cassahotelny.com/" target="_blank">Cassa Hotel and Residences</a>—had spectacular views, which made mingling above the city on the rooftop garden an iconic treat.</p> <p>I had a blast hanging with Jason Oliver Nixon and John Loecke of <a href="http://www.johnloeckeinc.com " target="_blank">John Loecke, Inc.</a>, in their “Weeds Den” (don’t they look dapper in the photo I snapped of them?). They had an uber-creative product in their space, HP’s <a href="http://bit.ly/9ZarFm" target="_blank">Wallskins</a>, which makes designing your own wallpaper super easy. From the Arcadian splendor of suburban life to Ren Mar’s herb-filled climes and the verdant estate of Esteban Reyes (just, ahem, mind the croquet mallets), “Weeds” carries the viewer into a bosky world brimming with dark and whimsical adventure. Nancy is a modern-day woodland nymph who has abandoned her manicured garden for the rough-and-tumble woodland where nothing is quite what it seems. She is the fertile goddess survivor who rules this kooky kingdom with caffeinated determination, a land where everything could go up in smoke in a second. The Weeds den—“Paradise Lost”—personifies this spirit, taking the traditional and turning it upon its head. The room is inviting but also curiously sinister, exciting and pregnant with possibilities but also dark and brooding. Traditional, almost-clashing fabrics tempt and tease and invite you to lose yourself in this den of iniquity. Wall coverings, here HP’s innovative <a href="http://bit.ly/9ZarFm" target="_blank">Wallskins</a> product, break the architecture and creep onto ceilings and doorframes and spill onto moldings. See his choices for frisky, fabulous, fun works of art <a href="http://www.zatista.com/guest_curator/jason_nixon" target="_blank">here</a>.</p> <p>My other favorite room in the Showtime House was “Californication State of Mind” by <a href="http://space4architecture.com/" target="_blank">Space 4 Architecture</a>, spearheaded by Michele Busiri-Vici, Guelfo Carpegna and Ulderico Micara. The room was inspired by Hank Moody’s “life on the edge,” and the team of architects meant for it to force the viewer to experience balancing on a precipice so that they’d feel as though they’re part of Moody’s madcap world. The most interactive feature I saw was in <a href="http://www.eccoid.com/" target="_blank">ECCO Design's</a> space where Eric Chan and Jeff Miller had created a photo booth (in the bathroom no less) that snapped your photo and morphed the faces of the Californication characters into your visage: now that's radical! <a href="http://www.jeffandrews-design.com/" target="_blank">Jeff Andrews</a> designed the Dexter space. The bed swinging free in the space on massive chains was worth the trip to midtown! Great job everyone! The High Point-based manufacturer's products first caught my attention at the <a href="http://www.hdboutique.com" target="_blank">HD Boutique</a> show in Miami Beach a few years ago (it was their Seat Belt chairs, which I recently noticed in the Showtime House video that I've embedded below--the <a href="http://www.sho.com/site/californication/schedule.do" target="_blank">Californication</a> room no less!) that stood out. I like the spirit of this new collection of sculptures, which Mark Phillips, the CEO and president of the company explained to me: "End of life doesn’t mean end of beauty. By judiciously pruning and bleaching and mounting, we are able to preserve nature’s majesty." The sculptures retail for between $200 and $2,000, and range in size from 18 inches tall to five feet. The vase sells for $987. "All stages of the bonsai are beautiful," remarks Phillips. "Even its’ swansong is magnificent, and we have found a way to rescue this mettle." </p> <p>How they came upon the bonsai is the most fascinating part of the story to me. "We found these beautiful forms in an irrigation ditch in the north of Thailand," Phillips says. "These colossal bonsai, locally referred to as a Siamese rough bush, had no use after life except as kindling. I saw a shape that I didn’t want to see go up in flames. We have a lot of experience with roots of long-ago fallen trees. After a little collaboration and a lot of trial and error we came upon a solution that preserved and enhanced." The sculptures are not for outdoor use and, as Joyce Wadler cleverly notes in her Times article, they're perfect for someone whose green thumb, um, isn't so green! "Voila! a beautiful life spirited plant that thrives on neglect" exclaims Phillips. "That's my kind of maintenance!" In all seriousness, he adds, "The Siamese rough bush is blessed with a rugged beauty that refuses to die. Our goal was to pay it forward."</p> <p>I'm psyched that I'll be attending the press preview and opening party of the <a href="http://www.sho.com/site/showtimehouse/tour.do" target="_blank">Showtime House at Cassa Hotel and Residences</a> in a little over a week. The uber-talented duo Jason Oliver Nixon and John Loecke (see their blog <a href="http://demystifyingdesign.com" target="_blank">Demystifying Design</a> here) are bringing the Weeds space to vivacious life and <a href="http://www.brizo.com" target="_blank">Brizo</a> faucets will be in da house! There are two sizes: small, which is eleven inches in diameter; and large, which measures fifteen inches in diameter. Both sizes have a 36" chain and can be purchased separately or in sets of two. I thought it would be fun to share one of her newest summer products, the Medusa Mirror. Okay, so I've been having some bad hair days with all this humidity we've been having in NYC of late, but that's not what made me become enamored with the intricately looping 37"-round mirror. It's just so darned pretty: pretty enough, I believe, that it would make even the scariest bad-haired mythical figure want to peruse her visage! I have seen it in person and it is quite the transparent beauty! Pomp, who has created glass objects for <a href="http://www.tiffany.com/" target="_blank">Tiffany & Co.</a>, and installations for <a href="http://www.donnakaran.com/" target="_blank">Donna Karan</a>, made 100 mouth-blown pieces from 30% recycled glass. He has signed and numbered each decanter in the collection, which he has named "The Touch." Though the glass piece is substantial, the dimple is so perfectly placed that it's comfortable to hold in spite of its weight. She's been in Honduras working on the line, with which she is taking a very hands on approach, down to the finishes she's choosing for each piece. "I'm putting together a collection that I expect to stand the test of time," says the inimitable designer. "It will be eclectic, just as the interiors I design are." Judging from the richness of the detailing I see in the images, the line will also have her signature warmth and gracefulness.
