This essay was written for hhgregg to spotlight the GE Café refrigerator with a Keurig Brewing System (the only refrigerator to brew Keurig K-cup Pods!) – it’s a true time-saver/space-saver in our own home. Thanks for reading!

—

We’ve been living hard, man.

Twice this week, Bee and I have hit the pillow after 10pm and let’s face it, neither one of us are used to seeing the moon in any capacity. We’re morning birds, up with the sun, down by eight, naps welcomed in between.

But the sun is out, and so are we.

—

Yesterday, I try to wake Bee up for a late morning playdate but she says, “Ooooooooooof” and promptly rolls over, a teenager hitting snooze.

“Breakfast in ten,” I whisper as I close the door behind me and pad out to the kitchen to chop sweet potatoes in my pjs.

—

My World-Famous (Exaggeration) Clean-Out-Your-Fridge Breakfast Hash “Recipe”

Peer into the fridge. Survey the state of your arugula, your grape tomatoes. Decide that yes, they’ll do, and also find a few good green beans, some spinach. Things are looking up.

Thaw some bacon from the freezer; wash and dice the sweet potatoes.

What’s this you’ve found in the fruit basket? A perfectly ripe avocado?! You are in luck.

Chop the thawed bacon; throw into a pan with sweet potatoes and heat on medium-high over copious amounts of ghee, or bacon grease if you’ve got it.

Add in an irrational amount of garlic powder and a touch of black pepper.

Brown the bacon and sweet potatoes, then throw arugula, spinach, cut green beans. Or really, any green produce on its last leg. Just get it on in there.

Remove once cooked, top with sea salt, avocado, a fried egg and cherry tomatoes.

—

“Did you make baaaaaconnnnn?” she says, emerging into the kitchen with sleepy eyes and disheveled hair.

“I did!” I say, and she leaps with joy as I preset my coffee’s brew time and dish out breakfast.

Bacon gets her out of her bed; coffee gets me out of mine.

—

“I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.” T.S. Eliot said this.

—

Sometimes I wonder if technology has gone too far. Are we allowing tiny robots to take over our chores? Will our children know how to run a proper vacuum, will they know how to count coins, will they know how to brew their own coffee?

But then I watch my refrigerator pour this magical elixir from a Keurig pod using fresh, filtered water straight into my mug as I’m grabbing forks and napkins and I think, eh, our children will know plenty. Come here, tiny robots. Have a seat, stay as long as you’d like.

—

“Eat up,” I tell Bee. “Our friends will be here any minute!”

“What color is a minute?” she asks.

—

And this is what I think of when I think of time-saving tricks – of fridges that make coffee, of phones that order groceries, of instant dinners and temperature controlling apps and high-speed blenders that make pints of juice in eight seconds flat.

What will we do with all of this time? It has been saved, borrowed, stolen. How will we spend it? What color will our minutes be?

—

Our hhgregg delivery guy, Willy, brought our fridge on a day ripe with sunshine a few weeks ago, and I loved him instantly. As he showed us the features (“Hot water dispenser, man!”), as he taught us how to polish it (“Only with the grain, man! This is keyyyyy.”), we talked of summer plans.

“Imma drink a lot of lemonade, man.” he says. “Imma soak in it.”

—

Summer is here. We’re ready to soak in it, ready to welcome it with fanfare, and yet I know this is how it works with me. I crave a new season like my morning coffee, and when the rush of the new is over, I tire. I want something different. July is never halfway over before I sit sweating in a swimming pool, dreaming of plaid scarves, picking apples, raking leaves.

But today is today, and the coffee is hot and the hash is ready and our friends are coming to visit, and soon we’ll be off to the zoo.

I’ll take it, for now.

—

I don’t know what color a minute is. I don’t know if we’re making good use of the time we save on a regular basis, but I have a feeling we’ll know it when we see it.

I have a feeling that today, it has shown up in red rosy cheeks, in sleepy blonde tendrils, a clear blue sky outside, the rich brown of my morning coffee.

And the new, wild hope of many more colors, minutes, coffees to come.

Please share your work here if you’d like to be considered for a feature on Booooooom. The comments allow images to be attached so make sure post an image along with a link to your website.

One of the things that makes Booooooom unique is all the encouraging comments people send back and forth on these monthly submission posts. The comments and upvotes do not go unnoticed! Voting up work is like high-fiving that person and it also helps us see what work you guys like! Remember, even if your work isn’t featured on the main site these posts can send some decent traffic to your portfolio!

The link at the bottom will open up this full post, simply scroll down and use the Disqus commenting system to submit your work.

Submission guidelines:

1. Please don’t flood the comments with a dozen images, just post 1 image that represents your best work along with 1 link.

2. If you see good work posted by someone upvote it so it appears at the top. This is not just a nice thing to do, it helps me see what work you actually like.

3. You can/should also encourage people who are sharing good work here! Comment on their posts and let them know you like what they’re doing. I really want to foster a community here, and this is a simple way you can connect with other people making work.

4. Keep in mind your post may not show up right away because it has an image attached. It may need to be manually approved first so don’t freak out and post a million times, once is enough.

SUBMIT WORK / LEAVE A COMMENT

But I’m not only thrilled the book is finally out there, after having worked on it for the past three years; I’d also love to say hello to any BLDGBLOG readers who might be out there while I'm on the road.

A few more events—in New York City, Chicago, and D.C.—are also coming up, but I'll post about those as they draw near.

Manus x Machina (A Daily Dose of Architecture)

Here's a quick tour through the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute's "Manus x Machina" exhibition that opens to the public on May 5th. While the treat for most people will be taking in the fashion on display, which veers between the handmade (Manus) to the computer-made (Machina), my photographs from today's press preview focus on the exhibition design by OMA's New York office.

The exhibition, located on two levels in the Met's Robert Lehman Wing, is reached via the Medieval Sculpture Hall, which OMA partner Shohei Shigematsu described as having a "church-like atmosphere":

Following the long strip of carpet, one comes to an arched opening signaling the exhibition, "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology":

There are three choices after walking through the opening: 1) Turn left or right to follow the corridors and look at niches filled with dresses:

2) Go downstairs to the lower level, where most of the dresses are found, or 3) walk straight ahead to look at the central space with its solitary dress (most people will opt for #3):

This central space, what Shigematsu calls a "ghost cathedral" in reference to the Medieval Sculpture Hall, features a brand new, yet temporary floor inserted into the Lehman Wing. In the center of the space sits a wedding dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld with a handmade front and laser-cut train (note the niche visible through the translucent wall):

The dome above the dress (below the Wing's blacked-out glass pyramid skylight) features a kaleidoscopic image of the dress's train:

Here is a view from a side portal that shows a little bit of the dome above the walls:

The walls of the exhibition are made from perforated PVC scrim, a material often used in theater. The scaffolding structure that holds up the scrim panels are revealed through varying degrees of translucency as one moves through the space. Here one of the pochéd niches can be seen from behind:

More translucent materials and basic support structure is visible when descending to the lower level, the actual level of the Lehman Wing:

The steps from above converge at a couple spots on the lower level, where some unique dresses – both handmade and computer-made – are highlighted:

The displays downstairs basically follow the existing layout, except scrims are introduced for continuity:

A gallery space where OMA's design intervention is minimal:

One of the few fashion details I photographed, a 3D-printed dress (sorry, I failed to note the designer):

Lastly, an easy-to-miss detail is OMA's credit line on a wall near the entry upstairs (the text for the main sponsor, Apple, on another wall is harder to miss):

One Beautiful Chair Made from One Massive 737 Engine Cowling (SolidSmack.com)

Ever dream of flying the high skies as a pilot? How about sitting on the edge of a massive jet engine intake? Well, if either has crossed your mind, there’s still a chance to live out your fantasy. All you need is this beautiful, futuristic chair made by Fallen Furniture.

It’s truly a unique chair, not just for its style, but for its origin. This chair is made from the engine cowling of a Boeing 737. The chair, appropriately named the ‘737 Cowling Chair’, is less a discarded engine and more a piece of art, with its glossy sheen, black leather interior and swiveling base. You’re probably thinking it too–It looks like exactly something you would find in a supervillian’s lair. And, oh, how wonderful it would be to slowly turn and face your visitors while laughing diabolically.

A 737 engine cowling is distinctive for its non-circular ‘hamster-pouch’ design and, together with the aluminum spun base, measures 6.5 x 6.5 x 6.5 feet (200 x 200 x 200 cm). Yeah, a tad bulky–might not fit through your front door–but it’s more stunning than any office chair you can pick up at Office Depot. The designers behind Fallen Furniture are calling the 737 Cowling “the epitome of luxury seating,” adding that “this unique and impressive masterpiece would form the centerpiece of any room.” The chair can be made to order and customized for each customer’s personal preferences.

Based out of England, Fallen Furniture was founded by brother’s Harry and Benjamin Tucker. They seem to have an obsession with planes, since this is not their first piece of furniture made out of airplane scrap. They’cve alos designed clocks, tables, lighting and drink cabinet that use old aircraft parts, including bar cabinets also made from cowlings.

Sourcing rare aircraft parts from around the world, the two have used the parts, creating breathtaking custom furniture incorporating exotic hardwoods and lacquered wood. They’ve even used an emergency exit door of an Airbus A320 to make a one-of-a-kind coffee table.

There’s no price listed for the 737 Cowling Chair, which likely means it’ll set you back a bag of Benjamin’s to have one made. Keeping in mind its size, weight, and high quality, there’s a good chance these won’t be massed produced, but anyone interested can contact the company for more information.

Though unique and certainly on the level of art, it makes one ponder what could be done with more accessible found objects that could be turned into custom furniture pieces.

Are You An Over-Apologizer? (design for mankind)

A few years ago, I apologized to a chair.

I was walking through the living room with a basket-ful of baby toys/blankets to clean up at day’s end and I tripped over the side of our ottoman, knocking into the armchair and sending it into the wall.

Gah! Sorry, I muttered under my breath, re-positioning the chair, surveying the nick in the wall’s paint, up-righting the toppled basket with my other hand. Ken hears from the kitchen, looks up from his soggy cereal and says:

Did you just say Sorry to the furniture?

I did.

—

This has always been a storyline of mine. In a long practiced habit of twisted empathy, I can’t not acknowledge when my actions affect someone (or clearly something) else, and the best way to do that, it had seemed, was to apologize for it.

I’m sorry, I’m confused.
I’m sorry, I don’t agree.
I’m sorry, I don’t understand.

I’m sorry, chair.

—

What I’m learning, currently, is that small things are sometimes just small things. Random. Personality tics, idiosyncrasies, quirky mannerisms.

And sometimes small things are bigger.

—

Last month, one of my girlfriends – a fellow over-apologizer – pointed me to a small piece of advice:

Don’t say I’m sorry when you really mean to say Thank you.

—

I’m sorry I’m late accepts fault for things you may or may not have been able to control, not entirely at least. Your kid’s last-minute skinned knee. A (real) traffic jam. The weather.

Thanks for your patience acknowledges that you’re late, and that being late isn’t ideal, and that as a result of your late-ness, the other person has (hopefully) granted you patience by waiting.

And that requires a Thank you.

—

I’m sorry is an apology for your shortcomings.
Thank you is an acknowledgement of others’ virtues.

—

I am very frequently saying ‘Sorry’ when I mean to say ‘Thank you’, and my girlfriend is very frequently, very gently, reminding me to knock it off.

Don’t apologize for your feelings. Don’t apologize for being a human. Accept it, thank others, move on.

—

I’ve been practicing. Just last week, I’d been feeling like this – sad, gloomy, blah – and typically, I’d begin the barrage of apologies to Ken, to Bee, to family, to friends. Gah! I’m sorry, I’m just in a terrible mood. I’m working on it.

But instead, this: Thanks for bearing with me. I know I’m kind of a grump today. I totally appreciate you giving me grace.

Ken smiled, said he was happy to, kind of quizzically scratched his head a little, undoubtedly wondering where his little apologizer had gone.

—

It’s a small thing.
It’s a big thing.

—

I’ll probably continue to mix up apologies with acknowledgements. I’ll probably twist the two together and bend toward the apology time and time again, succumbing to the default, saying Sorry to the furniture.

But.

It’s nice to practice a different way, too. It’s nice to save the Sorrys for the times I need it, for the times that matter, for the hearts I hurt, for the marks I miss.

And for all of the other times, it’s nice to say Thank you.

Take a look at current racing wheelchairs and you’ll see they’re largely the same. The Cheetah, however, stands out both aesthetically and functionally. It’s monocoque frame is specialized to give it not only a sleek, polished look but also to provide racers with cutting edge aerodynamics. Paying attention to the user’s sense of independence, the Cheetah’s primary improvement over traditional racers is a new seat that allows riders to enter and exit without any assistance. Better yet, this allows users to practice at any time without relying on help.

Designer: Tamara Ristic

Tokujin Yoshioka Creates ?Planet? Lamp For Kartell (3rings)

Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka established his studio a mere 16 years ago in Japan, but has some beautifully impressive projects under his belt, working with clients such as Hermes, Moroso, Issey Miyake, Lexus, and more, and has now created the ‘Planet’ lamp for Kartell.

Crystals, light, and the interplay between the sparkling property between them is a common theme in Yoshioka’s work, and his Planet lamps clearly reflect his fascination with the medium. Available as a complete series, with pendants, low table lamps, and lamps with metal structures, the signature feature is its slightly elliptical, multi-faceted diffuser and transparent surface, which creates a rich tapestry of reflections. The table lamp comes in three versions: smoke/black, yellow/gold, transparent/chrome.

Described by Kartell and designer Yoshioka, ‘A glittering object which was created by configured complex facets diffuses the light randomly by the lens effect that is brought by arranging the thickness of transparent resin.
It casts the light suggestive of the cosmos.’

‘Planet’ was launched at Salone di Milano and is available through Kartell dealers worldwide.

Below you’ll find the most popular designs we’ve tracked over the last 30 days – an overview of designs you shouldn’t have missed in April 2016.

Pull me to life drawer designed by Juno Jeon, takes references from living beings. The drawer itself looks like an animal on all fours, with its unusual wooden textured ‘skin’. The minute you slide the cabinet out, the skin comes to life by transforming in a way that may shock you at the first go, but will constantly keep you hypnotized by it forever after that!

The Nautilus designed by Mihir Gurjar takes every boy’s billionaire fantasy of owning a yacht, and combines it with the symbol of a gentleman, the fountain pen. The Nautilus’ design is classic in the sense that it forms a long-lasting bond with you. The design resembles a yacht (it isn’t easy to miss), and has a fluid organic characteristic to it, making it look both unique and desirable at the same time!

The Autographer designed by James Wood is a pretty nifty lapel camera that aims at being more of a fashion object than a tech-y gadget. Using materials like Leather and Canvas to cover the camera, the Autographer blends with your clothing. The controls are hidden at the back, only reinforcing the camera’s fashion statement.

Unlock horizontal versions of today, Pillars of Flux designed by Erdem Batirbek & Keremcan Kirilmaz is a network of skyscrapers used as a vertical shipping port designed for expanding ports and emerging ports of tomorrow. The Pillars are detached from the city to free valuable shoreline for public use and its storage bodies are also designed vertically to save space on narrow gulfs and coves.

For parents who worry their child may stray away, enter Kiddo designed by Razy2 Design Group, a nifty wearable that allows you to know when your child gets too far from you, or from their friends/guardians. Kiddo is a band with a smart sensor on it. The sensor works off low amounts of energy, by communicating with other devices of its kind, instead of being a computer on your wrist. When you buy the Kiddo, you get two bands. One for you, and one for your child. Program the bands so that they know who the guardian is, and who the ward is, and you’re good to go. Kiddo will vibrate on the child’s hand to tell them they’re getting too far from the parent. Kiddo will also warn the parent of the same, by vibrating.

Most hoverboards look fascinating only because of the technology behind it. They seldom ‘look’ beautiful. I guess we could say the same about any gadget. There’s always a time when design takes over to make a product look like it redefines standards of beauty in its category. The Axi2 designed by Nepdesign is that design intervention in the hoverboard market.

Like something out of an X-Men comic, this wheelchair designed by Adnan Curić combines a futuristic hubless design with automated features that together reduce stigma while maximizing mobility and functionality.

FLOATTI designed by Andrea Ponti isn’t just a luggage. In addition to the handle-scale and USB chargers for phones and laptops, the design also introduces some other truly innovative features. Use its digital trackers and mobile app to keep a remote eye on important objects. Ensure your belongings aren’t damaged with its one-of-a-kind wheel suspension system that absorbs the impact of bumpy surfaces. The coolest feature of all is a smart-handle that works in tandem with your phone. Hold your phone in one hand and control it with the touch-sensitive handle. Use it to make calls, control he camera, change music tracks and more!

Luna Eye designed by Crazybaby Studio is a spherical speaker with quite some street cred. Not only does it pack a punch in the sound department, it also can be paired with more of its kind to create a network of audio devices that can stream from a single source. It also can WiFi pair outdoors, which is great because it has its own WiFi network and doesn’t rely on your home WiFi.

The Moon lamp designed by Oscar Lhermitte & Kudu Studio has us absolutely gobsmacked. The Moon lamp is a lamp that displays lunar phases. One can toggle between manual and auto, allowing the ‘sun’ to move around a brilliantly detailed replica of the moon, casting shadows that make the moon look so realistic, you’ll pinch yourself. Each and every crater is captured in this 1:20 billionth scale model of the moon, thanks to Nasa.

Final Report 1/2015
FIMECC (Finnish Metals and Engineering Competence Cluster)
November 2015, 225 pages

Five years ago, some of Finland’s metals and engineering industry companies were looking for new ways to tackle challenges and concerns. With the shared vision, that industrial design and end users are key to reinventing a business, to coming up with innovative new products and services, and to enabling radical changes, a group of business people and researchers embarked together on a quest for new knowledge. How could the user experience, or “UX”, be utilized to make Finland’s metals and engineering industry more competitive? What does UX mean in the context of complex systems? What does it mean in the business-to-business context? The overall target of the programme was to radically renew practices of Finnish metals and engineering industry by developing and implementing new design and collaboration methods that produce personalized user and customer experiences.

The final report aims to summarize the most valuable learning achieved during the programme as well as many examples that hopefully will support others in applying newly created knowledge in their business. The material is based on insights furnished by company representatives and academics working at FIMECC UXUS programme. The final report consists of six differently themed sections describing the actions taken and the lessons learned. The report focuses particularly on companies’ perspectives, their learning journeys on UX during the programme.
