Daniel Greenwood

The U SPY is a simple home use product that enables users to view their moles up close with a portable camera. The images can then be viewed on the computer and compared with the examples of skin cancer from three different areas. If the user can see any one of the three characteristics shown the probability of the users having skin cancer is very high. The user can then see a dermatologist to confirm this information and receive surgery, early identification can lower the chances of skin cancer down to 1%, and yet 300 New Zealanders die each year from it.

In turn users can monitor moles growth and structure changes far more accurately using both the U SPY and its diagnosis programme.

The Rival is a revolutionary new motorbike where both wheels turn, which is completely new to motorbike design. Both wheels turning reduces the turning circle of the bike and greatly reduces oversteer and increases agility. The bike has a completely different feel to other bikes and gives the rider much more confidence riding through curves.

It is powered by a 400cc four stoke engine that runs through a chain and a universal joint to power the rear wheel. It turns using centre hub steering, this system not only allows both wheels to turn but also directs the breaking force through the front of the bike which means the front end does not drop down when breaking.

Georgia Witten Sage

My major project is a response to a personal experience of gun violence in Brazil. The research undertaken for the project has explored the process of firing a gun, its physical and emotional impacts, symbols, imagery and objects associated with gunfire and the meaning of the experience.

To communicate the unsettling emotions associated with gun violence in a visually significant way I designed a display typeface using cross hair symbols. I named the typeface ‘I Said No’ as words of protest against violence. Typeface is an important form of visual communication, it influences the way a message is read.

The typeface was modelled from Grotesque MT Bold. To illustrate a use of the typeface I designed a poster using the powerful statement made in an essay about Brazil by Alba Zaluar ‘when civil rights arrive we are already dead’.

I designed bullet case necklaces by having words associated with gun violence such as ‘pain’ and ‘bleed’ engraved on the polished cases. They bring together both aspects of the aftermath of gun violence – the empty physical shell of the bullet and the emotional effects of the experience.

At first glance the images and objects are appealing and enticing and the deeper meaning isn’t immediately obvious. The initial appeal of the work comes through the unfamiliar beauty of polished bullet cases and star like crosshairs. It is only when engaging with the work more closely that its meaning is revealed through the combined impact of the statement and the crosshair symbol.

Embrace37 is a radiant warmer, a controlled heated living environment designed for premature infants within intensive care. The primary objective of Embrace37 is to minimise current issues of intimidation and psychological separation often found within NICU or SCBU units.

A greater confidence within the medical environment is instilled in the parents and the manner in which they interact with their new premature baby.

This is established through subtle features that place emphasis upon interaction between the users and Embrace37, as well as encouraging the developmental care of the infant through parent interaction.

Rubbish is one of lifes constants, a byproduct of our daily lives. The wheelie bin has been around since the 70’s ad helps us to reduce and re-use or waste. The Earthwyze recycle incorporates a compartment to recycle ’special disposal’ items such as eco-bulbs, batteries and small items that sit in the landfills and dont biodegrade. e.g; CD’s, Mobile phones, Ink Cartridges. Interchangable side panels are specially designed to clip on and off for the promotion of businesses and events. The Earthwyze bins are designed to be warm, welcoming and easier to use.

Tattooing is one of the world’s oldest art forms predating architecture and literature and has been part of human culture for centuries. It has a rich history playing a role in almost every ancient culture across all continents. Skin Works uses these different cultures in an exhibition to explore the theme of narrative in Tattoo through art and design.

With petrol price rises and global warming issues in our news headlines almost everyday there is a new market emerging for low cost, environmentally sustainable commuter vehicles. The Rei is an urban electric motorcycle targeted towards the fun-loving youth of the not-to distant future. Taking power from the recyclable Lithium-ion Titinate batteries and delivering it to the powerful electric motor the Rei can reach speeds of over 100km/h with a long range of 300km. Offering practicality as well as sustainability the Rei offers a foldaway seat, for deterring theft and protecting against weather as well as storage within it’s compartments for a backpack and helmet.
