A good logo design is not just a visual representation of a business. It actually describes stories, ideas and the mission of that particular business. It can convey emotions, fascinate the viewers and even manipulate them into doing things. These logos tell you stories like Nike’s world famous swoosh logo.

Nike was the name of a Greek Goddess in the ancient Greek culture. She was the goddess of victory and was daughter Pallas a Titan, and Styx a Naiad. Nike’s mother Styx supported Zeus in the titan war and brought her four children Nike (victory), Bia (force), Cratos (strength), and Zelus (Rivalry). In return Zeus promised that he will keep them closer forever. The four young deities then stood beside Zeus. Nike was given the divine chariot to ride. During the war of the Titans, Nike comforted Zeus and helped him regain his strength and strike back. That is why Nike is also attributed as the goddess of the strength and triumph.

In ancient Greek she was the goddess of victory and helped the rightful to succeed. Her wings swooshed and so does the feather she kept in her hand. Her attributes were also associated with the force and speediness.

The Nike name was suggested by Jeff Johnson. And logo designed in 1971 by Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student at Portland State University.

Today, swoosh is 40 years old and it is one of the most recognizable logo in the World.

Nike is a major sportswear company in the World. Nike is the numbe rone manufacturer of footwear and apparel in the market. Their vision is simple:

"To bring innovation and inspiration to every athlete in the World. If you have body, you are an athlete."

The story started on January 25, 1964 when two men shook hands on a partnership. One of them was Phil Knight. He was born February 24, 1938 in Portland, Oregon, the son of a lawyer and future newspaper publisher. Knight attended Cleveland High School in Portland, and then the University of Oregon in Eugene, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and earned a journalism degree in 1959.

He was a middle-distance runner at the school under track coach Bill Bowerman and ran a personal best 4:10 mile, winning varsity letters for track in 1957, 1958, and 1959.

William Jay "Bill" Bowerman (February 19, 1911 – December 24, 1999) was an American track and field coach. Over his career, he trained 31 Olympic athletes, 51 All-Americans, 12 American record-holders, 24 NCAA champions and 16 sub-4 minute milers. During his 24 years as coach at the University of Oregon, the Ducks track and field team had a winning season every season but one, attained 4 NCAA titles, and finished in the top 10 in the nation 16 times.

Bowerman also joined the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the days following the Pearl Harbor attack. Then, Bowerman was promoted to commander of the 86th Regiment's First Battalion at the rank of Major. For his service, Bowerman received four Bronze Star Medals, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Silver Star. He was honorably discharged in October 1945.

Right after graduating from Oregon, Phil Knight enlisted in the Army and served one year on active duty and seven years in the Army Reserve. After the year of active duty, he enrolled at Stanford Graduate School of Business. In Frank Shallenberger's Small Business class, Knight needed to create a business plan. His paper, "Can Japanese Sports Shoes Do to German Sports Shoes What Japanese Cameras Did to German Cameras?", essentially was the premise to his foray into selling running shoes. He graduated with a Masters of Business Administration from the school in 1962.

Knight set out on a trip around the world after graduation, during which he made a stop in Kobe, Japan in November 1962. It was there he discovered Tiger brand running shoes, manufactured in Kobe by the Onitsuka Co. So impressed with the quality and low cost, Knight made a cold call on Mr. Onitsuka, who agreed to meet with him. By the end of the meeting, Knight had secured distribution rights for the western United States for Tiger running shoes.

The first Tiger samples would take more than a year to be shipped to Knight, during which time he found a job as an accountant in Portland, Oregon. When Knight finally received the shoe samples, he mailed two pairs to Bill Bowerman in Eugene in the hope of gaining a sale and an influential endorsement. To Knight's surprise, Bowerman not only ordered the Tiger shoes, he offered to become a partner with Knight and would provide some design ideas for better running shoes.

The two men shook hands on a partnership on January 25, 1964, the birthdate of Blue Ribbon Sports, forerunner to Nike.

In 1965, they employed Jeff Johnson who was a friend of Phil from Stanford University. He quickly became an invaluable utility man for the start-up company. He created the first product brochures, print ads and marketing materials. Johnson also established a mail-order system, opened the first BRS retail store located in Santa Monica.

In 1971, BRS and Onitsuka Tiger relationships ended and both partners wanted to make their own

brand. Then, Jeff Johnson came with idea.

His idea was Nike, which was the name of the Greek goddess of victory. "There was also a missile, which they thought denoted speed. Phil wasn't sure with the name at the beginning.

They had a name, now they had to have a trademark for the side of the shoe. It was 1971, and Ford had spent $2 million getting a trademark. They didn't have $2 million, so Phil went by the graphic arts department at Portland State, and there was a woman there saying, 'I don't know how I'm going to get enough money for the dress for this prom,' Phil said, 'I have a job for you.' He paid her $2 an hour, and she spent 17 and a half hours. So $35 and she came up with what is now the swoosh."

Her name was Carolyn Davidson and she was given huge amount of money from Nike stock in 1983.

The swoosh first used by Nike on June 18, 1971.

Nike's first self-designed product was based on Bowerman's "waffle" design. After the University of Oregon resurfaced the track at Hayward Field, Bowerman began experimenting with different potential outsoles that would grip the new urethane track more effectively. His efforts were rewarded one Sunday morning when he poured liquid urethane into his wife's waffle iron. Bowerman developed and refined the so-called "waffle" sole, which would evolve into the now-iconic Waffle Trainer in 1974.

With a new logo, a new name and a new design innovation, what BRS now needed was an athlete to endorse and elevate the new Nike line. Fittingly for the company founded by Oregonians, they found such a young man: His name: Steve Prefontaine.

He was very famous runner from Oregon and he never lost any race at his home track over the one-mile distance, and quickly gained national exposure thanks to cover stories on magazines like Sports Illustrated and his fourth place finish in 1972 in the 5k m in Munich.

Then he became a powerful ambassador for Nike, however he died in 1975 but his spirit is still on Nike. Pre is the “SOUL OF NIKE”.

In 1978, Nike made a sponsorship agreement with famous Romanian tennis player Illie Nastase. He was Nike’s first professional athlete.

Besides Prefontaine and Nastase, Nike has sponsored many other successful track and field athletes over the years, such as Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Sebastian Coe.

In 1982, Nike’s first TV commercial apperaed on TV during the New York marathon. The ads were created by Portland based agency WIEDEN+KENNEDY.

One of Nike's most famous partnerships is with global inspiration and sports icon Michael Jordan. The company signed the basketball player in 1984.

Nike's steady competition in the 1980's was Reebok. To break any similarities they had to Reebok, Nike began promoting shoes as fashion accessories. Reebok had cornered the younger, aerobics audience, so Nike started concentrating their ads around the person wearing the product rather than the product itself. In the 80's, Nike grew to hold 50% of the market share in the athletic shoe market.

In 1988, Nike employees met with advertising agency WIEDEN+KENNEDY, then JUST DO IT was born.

In 1990's Nike touched the football business slightly more.

In 1996, Nike Golf landed a vastly talented but as yet unproven young golfer named Tiger Woods for a reported $5 million per year.

In 1999, Bill Bowerman passed away. According to Phil Knight; "He was about teaching you how to respond competitively to different challenges. Obviously, they were on the track, and they were about getting prepared to compete and competing well and competing better than you thought you could do, and accepting victory and defeat."

In 2000, Nike rang in the new millennium with a new footwear cushioning system called Nike Shox, which debuted during Sydney in 2000. The development of Nike Shox culminated more than 15 years of perseverance and dedication.

During the past 20 years especially, Nike has been one of the major clothing and footwear sponsors for leading athletes, players and teams.

I started working on the designs just before the FIFA World Cup™ began last year in South Africa. With the concept and title I wanted to create a series of drawings which when transferred onto the kit would also inspire their performance.”

The story of adidas 3-stripes

Three stripes is a registered trademark of adidas since 1949.

In fact, it is synonymous with adidas. I believe adidas wouldn't be such a great brand without 3-stripes. That's why; adidas and 3-stripes are synonymous things since 1949.

However, 3-stripes is not invention of adidas.

In 1916, the Karhu brand was established in Finland by by the company Ab Sport Artiklar, which used a bear as its logo. In 1920, Ab Sport Artiklar changed its name to Karhu.

The Karhu brand featured prominently at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games, where Finnish athletes took all three medals in javelin using Karhu javelins. Four years later, at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, Paavo Nurmi won five gold medals in track events "wearing a conspicuous pair of white Karhu running spikes".

In the 1930s Karhu's production expanded to include cross-country and ski jumping skis.

In 1949, Karhu sold the three stripes trademark it had been using to a then little known German brand called adidas for the equivalent of 1600 EUROS and 2 BOTTLE OF WHISKEYS.

Adi Dassler used 3-stripes on footwear in 1949. Then, the 3-Stripes became quintessential adidas symbol. Dassler created a symbol that could be immediately recognized when his footwear was used in athletic competition and associated with adidas. He emphasized the association with the slogan "The Brand with the 3 Stripes".

The 3-Stripes were first used on apparel in 1967.

The 3-Stripes now enjoy worldwide recognition as an adidas symbol.

Weighing in at an unbelievable 9.8 ounces, the Crazy Light is being touted as the lightest basketball shoe on the market by more than 15% over the next lightest shoe. With the introduction of the Crazy Light, adidas now has the lightest footwear in three sports, including football (adiZero 5-Star cleat) and soccer (F50 adiZero cleat).

To construct the Crazy Light, the adidas Basketball Design Team started building from scratch, as opposed to stripping down an existing concept.

Technology incorporated into the Crazy Light starts with the revolutionary new SPRINTWEB exoskeleton upper. SPRINTWEB is less than 1mm thick and is seamlessly bonded to a nylon base for weight reduction and added support. The web layout provides players with vertical and horizontal strength, which comes in handy when making cuts.

The SPRINTFRAME heel counter and TORSION SYSTEM are fused together to reduce weight, increase energy return and improve motion control. The eyelets are load bearing and have corresponding web spars to enhance support. The first thing you notice about Puma’s latest power boots incarnation are the rubber pads over the toes of the boot, similar to those seen on the Nike Total 90s. It is still impressive design.

Puma has been ditched in favour for the newly redesigned 3D PST. Puma improved the 3D Power Shooting zone and returned with strategically placed rubber strips aimed to encourage curve and power, they are seemingly made with the striker in mind. Not only will the 3D PST aid kicking, the off centre lacing increases the instep for better pressure distribution and reduce the force of ball impact.

Under Armour New American Football Uniform Design

Here is Under Armour's new uniform design for three US college football teams to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit organization that provides programs and services to injured service members and their families.

South Carolina will be the first team to wear the new uniforms when they go up against Auburn on Oct. 1. The other two schools are Texas Tech and South Florida. On Nov. 12, the Red Raiders will wear their UA Wounded Warrior uniforms in a game against Oklahoma State; and South Florida will get their chance on Nov. 19, when they take on the University of Miami.

Under Armour is designing new cleats and gloves for each school, and each program will replace athletes’ names on the backs of their jerseys with a core value: Duty, Honor, Courage, Commitment, Integrity, Country or Service.

Custom jerseys will be auctioned off on each school’s website after the games, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the latest Wounded Warrior Project, “Believe in Heroes.” UA will make a limited number of jerseys available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds going to Believe in Heroes.

Once upon a rainy afternoon in the year of 1923, a young shoemaker by the name of Albert Messmer was standing looking at a football match in his hometown of Eppendorf. While he was watching the players finding it hard to gain their ground on the heavy and muddy pitch he suddenly got a good idea – a really good idea. He went home to his workshop, worked all night and the next morning he came out very proud with his first sports product – a football boot with cleats.

Subsequently, young Albert partnered up with his brother Michael to create a company called ‘hummel’. When realizing their idea the German brothers took their inspiration from ‘hummel’ – the German word for bumblebee. A bumblebee is not supposed to be able to fly due to the way it is built hence it defies the laws of gravity. When wearing Messmer’s boots the football players were suddenly able to do nature-defying moves and tricks as well and therefore ‘hummel’ naturally suggested itself as Albert and Michael were to name their company back in 1923.

From 1923 to today. From Germany to Denmark. Here is the exciting history of Hummel.

In 1927, Messmer brothers send out their first catalogue offering everything from hiking boots to medicine balls and bathing caps.

In 1935, due to bankruptcy the Messmer brothers have to let go of their company which is taken over by their lawyer Hermann Christian Knibbe and his two business partners, Jürgensen and Tigges.

In 1945, the company suffers heavy bombing by the allies at the end of World War II. Viktoriastraße where the company is located is literally swept off the city map.

In 1946, hummel reopens in the new premises outside Hamburg. They now produce football boots, handball shoes and skates.

In 1956, Bernhard Weckenbrock from Kevelaar near the border to Holland acquires hummel and moves the production to southern Germany.

In 1969, hummel launches its first collection of sportswear. Promotional sponsorship helps sales and the company enjoys massive success. Later that year the hummel logo, the first bumblebee logo is created.

In 1972, hummel is sold in most European countries – and in Bahrain, where an Arab emir suddenly needs shoes worth 250.000 Deutschmark from one day to the other. In the world of football, hummel signs its first major sponsorship deal with Werder Bremen.

In 1974, Jørgen Vodsgaard and Max Nielsen found VN Sport ApS to market hummel products in Denmark.

In 1979, hummel signs its first sponsorship contract with the Danish Football Association.

In 1980, Jørgen Vodsgaard and his business partners become owners of hummel. The company is now 100% Danish.

In 1984, hummel’s tracksuit is selected as the tournament’s most attractive at the European Championships in 1984 when Denmark reaches the finals for the first time

In 1986, Denmark Hummel Kits are presented at a grand show which is shown live in the evening news on the sole Danish television channel, Danmarks Radio, at the time. National team players Morten Olsen, Per Frimann and Frank Arnesen are presented on stage wearing a striped playing kit that is quickly nicknamed the Carnival suit in the media. The whole charade doesn’t get any smaller when FIFA gets involved by demanding that the Danish National Team wears shorts of only one colour due to TV concerns. The demand for the jersey is huge, which is further strengthened by the fact that the national team performs above all expectations by defeating both Scotland, Uruguay and West Germany before the eternal rival Spain spearheaded by Emilio Butragueño calls it a day for the talented Danish team by crushing them 5-1 in Queretaro.

In 1987, hummel has expanded its activities in all of Europe and promotes itself through sponsorships in major European clubs. Among these Tottenham Hotspurs, Norwich, Hontved Budapest, Verona, Feyenoord and the Danish, Swedish and the Norwegian national teams.

In 1987, hummel signs a sponsorship deal with mighty Real Madrid – and with the club’s biggest star Danish nightmare, Emilio Butragueño. The deal sees the sale of hummel products hit the roof.

In 1992, The Danish national football team wins the European championship – wearing hummel. Since Denmark hasn’t qualified regularly and is admitted only 10 days before the tournament starts at the expense of former Yugoslavia heavily marked by civil war problems concerning delivery of playing kits to the team arise. In accordance with the unexpected success of the Danish national team sports stores across the country are ripped of the national team jerseys.

In 1999, hummel introduces its fashion wear based on a re-launch of old tracksuit designs from the 1970's. The clothes are an instant and huge success and helps form the retro wave that runs across the fashion world in the years to come.

In 2001, hummel’s popularity rises to new heights when international celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton, Robbie Williams and Jessica Simpson take a liking to and start wearing the Danish brand.

In 2002, Wearing a retro-inspired jersey, the 15th national team jersey from hummel, the Danish national football team does really well in the first three preliminary games at the World Cup in Japan and Korea. The reigning world champions from France are beaten before the England puts an end to the Danish delight in the 2nd phase of the tournament.

In 2010, Fashion footwear campaign, PlayStadil, is launched in February coinciding with the street date of the hummel Fashion Footwear spring-summer 2010 collection. Later that same year, hummel enters into an agreement with one of the biggest bands in the world, The Black Eyed Peas, and their partner RETH¿NK to support The E.N.D. World Tour 2010. This is the kick-off of hummel's big recycling campaing which will kick off at the men's handball World Cup in Sweden in January 2011.

Admiral is one of the most legendary sportswear brand in England. It is actually recognized foooball and cricket brand.

The trademark 'Admiral" was created in 1914 by ABC Hosiery ltd (later known as Cook & amp; Hurst Ltd) manufacturing good quality English made underwear and, subsequently, items of sportswear. When England won the World Cup in 1966, Bert Patrick, the owner of Cook & Hurst, commenced manufacturing and marketing football kits.The kits sales were aimed at the juvenile market and through selling connections in the sports retail trade. Bert Patrick believed that the advent of colored television would enable him to persuade football clubs to accept personalized kits which his designers would produce and then register them under the Design Copyright Act. There was stiff opposition to his ideas from all sections of the public.

Admiral and England
Admiral brokered a ground-breaking deal with England National Football Team in 1974 to produce the first commercially available England shirt that featured a sportswear manufacturers logo. They agreed a five-year contract for a starting payment of £15,000 a year or a 10 per cent royalty.

This shirt was first worn by the England first team in a 3–0 victory over Czechoslovakia at Wembley on 30 October 1974 as England opened their European Championship 1976 qualifying campaign.

England Admiral Home Shirt, 1974/1980

A collar was added to the England shirt for the first time in two decades. And, for the first time ever, the England shirt bore embellishments other than the three-lions emblem – red and blue striping on both collar and sleeves. Former England forward Jimmy Greaves was perhaps a bit harsh when he said the striping made the new strip look like pyjamas, although that description did fit the rather garish Admiral warm-up jackets that accompanied the new uniform. The new shirt was worn with blue shorts, in a lighter shade than the traditional navy blue and bearing white and red striping down the sides, and white stockings with red and blue stripes at their top.

This shirt became associated with failure. It was never worn in a major final tournament because England did not qualify for either the European Championship of 1976 or the World Cup 1978.

From 1980 till 1983, Admiral made below kit for England. This kit is still one of the most recognizable English kit maybe because of Keven Keagen. It is actually really good design compare the football kits in 1980's. England started to wear Umbro again from 1984.

David Beckham is not a great player like Pele or Maradona, but he is definitely Elvis Presley of football. He knows how to sell his skills on the fields and off the fields. Here is the story of his logo.

David's own logo, capturing Becks as he runs up to take one of his famous free kicks with his arm outstretched.

The design itself is the epitome of what great logos are all about. It's simple, powerful and instantly recognisable. Its success is in the moment that it captures, using just a few strokes. To take a human being and turn them into an unmistakable icon is a great achievement.

In the same way that in the late-80s and early-90s Michael Jordan's Jumpman logo and number 23 vest became synonymous with the Nike brand, Adidas hope the Beckham logo will have as powerful an effect.

Beckham's logo could perhaps have done more for the brand had the famous three stripes of Adidas been incorporated into it.

Beckham said: "The logo is totally me and something that people can relate to. The image of me taking a free kick is world renowned and instantly recognizable. I am proud to have worked with Adidas to have developed it."

Eric Vellozzi, the Adidas designer responsible for the logo, said: "A David Beckham free kick is one of the most recognizable images in world sport, even before he kicks the ball, due to the angle of his body upon impact.
