Anatomy Design with the Lab Light was the winner of this prestigious prize.

The idea behind the winning piece, the Lab Light, invokes a strong message of functional design. Andrea Kleinloog from Anatomy Design explains that functional design is both an outcome and a process. The product, she explains with flair, simply works well to perform its assigned task.

Beyond functional design, the Lab Light is seamlessly effortless in all its beauty. A true example of the talent South Africa produces.

Bruce Nussbaum’s love affair with the design of business, and the business of design, began at Business Week. His first, small articles on incorporating elements of design into the methods of business, generated an overwhelming response, and it was then that Bruce first considered, “that design can be the bottom-line for business”.

In this interview Bruce Nussbaum shares his thoughts, on how design has become our core competency in a time of economic instability. Through his businessman eyes, and in the context of Design Indaba, Bruce Nussbaum pauses to marvel at South Africa’s authentically diverse and design-rich culture and considers the ways in which a culture of design can drive an economy.

Noah-Murphy Reinhertz and Amy Fraceschini, of Futurefarmers, explain the Multinational Feedback Loop. True to its name, the Multinational Feedback Loop recycles, reuses and adapts existing and obsolete technologies, in order to sustain the cultivation of renewable resources on an international level. They are joined by a number of friends who share their thoughts on the future of farming.

Protofarm 2050 was commissioned by ICSID for the World Design Congress in Singapore from 23 to 25 November. The brief was to generate preemptive solutions to predicted problems of the future.
