The power of craft has touched every facet of design since the dawn of time. At the Harvard Graduate School of Design, students Annie Xing, Luke Fiorante, Joseph Fujinami, and Chi Zhang investigate the logic of making by hand—and whether the modalities of robotics can learn these distinctly human gestures. A portmanteau of two Japanese words––”hikari,” meaning light, and “kirigami,” the art of cutting and folding a single sheet into three-dimensional form––Hikarigami explores the intersection of digital code and physical force.

What begins as a flat aluminum sheet evolves into a volumetric luminaire composed of six formed panels, each contributing to a dynamic field of light. A function of both process and progress, the material is first laser-cut with a variable lattice pattern derived from computational simulations, then shaped through robotic incremental forming—transforming the planar into the spatial without the use of molds or conventional tooling.

Alike to chainmail, each motif follows a continuous logic, yet no two are identical. The lattice varies in density and geometry, guiding how the aluminum bends, resists, and ultimately refracts light. The result is a porous, light-refracting surface where structure, texture, and illumination emerge simultaneously from a single act of making.

A robotic arm—an ABB industrial model guided by Grasshopper and custom toolpath scripts—presses into the metal sheet with sub-millimeter precision, forming each panel point by point. This process, known as single-point incremental forming, borrows from aerospace and automotive manufacturing, yet is recontextualized here as a tool for design exploration. Each deformation is deliberate, yet responsive, producing subtle variations that make every panel—and every projection of light—distinct.

Seemingly similar yet with a modality all its own, Hikarigami’s magic comes from within. When illuminated, the six panels act as both diffuser and lens, casting caustic light patterns that shift across walls and floors. The experience is neither static nor singular; it evolves with movement, angle, and proximity, dissolving at times into atmosphere, and at others revealing a dense, almost textile-like surface language.

The raw, unfinished aluminum bears the marks of its own creation—subtle irregularities, directional grain, and residual tensions left by the robotic tool. These are not imperfections, but a visible record of process, allowing the object to carry its own romantic narrative of making. Over time, the material will continue to change, taking on a patina shaped by use and environment.

The Harvard graduate team is as follows: Annie Xing, who directed computational design and fabrication; Luke Fiorante, who specialized in robotic fabrication and toolpath programming; Joseph Fujinami, who led fabrication and structural assembly; and Chi Zhang, who contributed to robotic fabrication. Completed in 2025, the project delineates a new paradigm of manufacture—one where craft and automation are collaborators, and where variability and precision coexist within the same material language.

In interior design, stylistic fads come and go. More often than not, these trends reflect changing tastes and fleeting—dare we say vapid—cultural phenomena, but rarely anything else. With our homes, offices, and ever-fluid civic spaces forming the backdrop of our lives, shouldn’t these environments be conceived with more substantiated intention? Shouldn’t the right acoustic or lighting plan supersede the perceived “need” for gimmicky flex? And why can’t these essential considerations be delivered with visual appeal still in mind?

A new report from John Hopkins University’s International Arts + Mind Lab (IAM Lab) re-assesses the serious functional value of aesthetics in not just supporting mental and physical health but also better facilitating individual creativity and interpersonal interaction; a condition in short supply these days.

Released earlier this year, the Intentional Space Roadmap is an in-depth, multivalent scientific yet accessibly written study that ultimately calls for the establishment of a more well-rounded interior design field coined Neuroarchitecture, one that incorporates the indispensable expertise of psychology. It unpacks how light, sound, texture, form, and natural shape (Biophilia) implicitly influence how we feel, think, heal, and connect with others.

“We are in, or move through, spaces every moment of our lives, and we now know that our environments have powerful effects on our physical and mental health,” said Susan Magsamen, Executive Director of the IAM Lab. “The importance and momentum of this work have never been more critical. From individual wellbeing to community impact, across every sector of society, the implications are profound. Intentional spaces represent a cost-effective, life-changing opportunity to improve health, resilience, innovation and quality of life at scale. This is not a dream or wishful thinking. There are organizations already putting these ideas into practice and leading the way and we are offering a roadmap and resources to accelerate this movement.”

The report isn’t merely a defense of this fresh proposition—one rooted in long-refined strategies—but also an actionable framework. Sections self-reflectively outline the research involved; the disciplinary obstacles still in place that stymie the adoption of this more versatile and actually holistic mindset; and recommendations to get past these limitations. Overall, it calls for a more cross-disciplinary and collaborative approach.

Some of the challenges identified include the lack of universal terminology, access to applied evidence, and regulatory incentive. Incomplete training and financial constraints—the speed at which we expect projects to be carried out to meet the bottom-line of increasingly hurried economic realities—are other more obvious hurdles. The onus is both on design practitioners and academic researchers, both of which tend to keep their intuitive and intellectual expertise siloed within their respective fields.

Some of the strategic “tools” outlined centers on dissolving these boundaries, making research and the values of neuroaesthetics more integral to design education for one. When it comes to the actual practice of interior design, an evidence-based strategy could more closely take into account the use of a specific space; its role is helping individuals focus; create memories; regulate emotions; ideate with little constraint or distraction; and have more pleasing—calming—sensory experiences.

Perhaps the most important aspect for our still capitalist society is to draw clear links between the economic value—efficiency and cost-effectiveness—of this methodology; the idea that spaces that are more holistically designed along this framework will help its inhabitants/users live and perform better.

To further evolution, and perhaps be more answerable to the environment, architecture and design need to harness the virtues of the scientific method.

Polished base panels introduce contrast, creating a subtle illusion of levitation, while precision-milled details—radiating grooves, engraved fasteners, and a facemask carved from a single aluminum block—echo the movement of sound waves in visual form. The result is austere yet expressive, industrial with emotional resonance.

The Mirage Edition explodes outward in an iridescent meditation on color and movement. Often overshadowed by his contemporary Pablo Picasso, artist George Braque was instrumental in establishing the highly influential, early 20th-century art movement Cubism. Paying tribute to this unsung talent is the new eponymously named stereo system just released by Swedish brand Nocs and industrial designer Daniel Alm.

In Braque’s paintings, collages, and prints, the polymath set out to distill bucolic landscapes and rural village scenes as broken up and then re-assembled geometric compositions; decidedly abstract yet still slightly recognizable representations. Through this revolutionary approach, he examined how objects could be depicted from multiple perspectives—multiple sources of light—as if superimposed portrayals of the same setting rendered at different times of day.

This ever-refined exploration was not merely a refute of the established artistic conventions that had come before but a response to the ever speed-up advancement of technology defining the era; a mutation of Impressionism—that emerged when the camera replaced the need for realistic illustration or the attempt thereof. Cubism, itself, eventually transmuted into Purism: the ultimate paring-down of fundament, meticulously proportioned, form.

The new speaker comprises two seamlessly interconnected by slightly contrasted cubes. As a nod to Braque’s mastery of duality, the device is precision engineered in both plywood and steel, the base in the latter and the main cone encasement in the former. The stacked compositions might not reflect the perceivably erratic nature of Cubist configuration and much more the rationalism of say a Mies van der Rohe, but the intent is clear, if subtle.

It comes down to how both cubes and finishes. While the steel base is cut, welded, and brushed by hand—giving each limited-edition Braque system a bespoke patina—the plywood component—assembled in nearby Estonia—takes a more unified matte coating. Both elements are black but the bottom piece takes on many more simultaneous dimensions as it refracts the light coming in from all directions. This is where the connection to its namesake holds true.

It isn’t just aesthetic however. The speaker is unabashedly performative. “Braque is about space, physical and sonic,” says Alm. “By working with a larger enclosure and a coaxial driver, we were able to shape a sound that’s natural, open, and honest. It reveals what’s in the recording without adding anything of its own, which is the core of our Studio Sound approach.”

“Braque opens up new possibilities for us,” he adds. By the very nature of its essential, boxy form—but also weightiness—the device can be mounted on a stand or suspended. It can also be multiplied—not unlike an installation—as part of a larger installation.

A typesetter by trade, my mother brought our first Apple Macintosh computer—I’m dating myself with that reference—into our home in the early 1990s. It’s not always easy to comprehend how the seemingly innocuous and immaterial technologies we use all day, every-day consume physical energy and deplete natural resources.
