It’s a good chance that you are visiting this article using a tablet or even your smartphone. The number of people that are accessing the Internet using other devices than the “old” desktop and laptop is constantly increasing. The designers noticed this fact and started to create websites that can be visited on every device, no matter the screen size.

Nowadays, we have responsive websites and the most problems related to the differences between the screens sizes seem to be resolved. It’s clear, a designer should work taking the mobile aspect into account. Well, this transformation created many problems and the design community should quickly adopt the best solutions.

The design community is a very solid and helping one and all the website creators bring their own contribution. As a consequence, we may find websites highlighting the best mobile websites; the creators of these receive exposure while the viewers get inspiration.

Undoubtedly, the inspiration is capital in creating new websites and we couldn’t ignore this aspect. Here you have a wonderful collection of mobile logins, check each item and apply some techniques from here in your projects. (Pay close attention, is very easy to fall into the trap of “getting too inspired” from a single example).

Having a usable and well designed mobile login is vital in the overall success of a website; it’s redundant to say that a bad login form means client and visitors unsatisfied and many opportunities might be lost in this way.

Ever since Microsoft unveiled their Metro UI – the tiled interface that, interestingly, wasn’t a big hit with many users – there’s been a trend in the design world to favor flat designs.

Flat designs make much more use of brighter colors – the palette is hugely important because there’s a significant reduction in gradients and shadows. Elements appear to sit flush with the background, instead of “popping” as if there were a layer of depth, and everything appears much more minimalist and clean. It’s definitely a refreshing change from the increasingly skeuomorphic style of design that Apple’s iOS had been pushing for.

To help get you started with flat design, we’ve collected some beautifully designed UI kits that all use this style. From flat buttons, checkboxes and drop-downs to colour palettes that work really well together – there’s something here that’s useful for anyone looking to work with this style. We hope you find the collection useful for your next project, and we’re looking forward to seeing what you make with them.

The problem with typography, cause there is a problem, is that web designers don’t know much about it. The only typographical questions that most web designers face is what font they have to use for their design.

The basic issues that a web designers has to solve is choosing the right typeface and manipulating correctly the font size, weight, line height and other rather less important attributes. But that isn’t all.

To be a good web designer you need to have a good understanding of typography and how it works. We started with a few options at our hand, but since font-face was available, that was pretty much solved. However, that didn’t solve the typography problem that designers were facing, because the problem wasn’t the font pool, but its overall font usage on the page.

Legibility

It is important to have a good visual contrast between fonts and also between blocks of text and headlines. The human brain is built in such a way that makes it strong contrast and distinctive patterns attractive for you.

The amount of characters that are in the line is something that most designers ignore. For eligibility purposes, this should be around 65-75 characters. Legibility is the degree to which individual characters in text are understandable or recognizable based on appearance. It is important to take care of this if you want your visitors to read with no difficulty the text that you have on your page.

Typographic hierarchy

Typographic hierarchy is a system that allows you to establish an order of importance with the text that is on your page, allowing the visitors to navigate easily and find what they are looking for. It represents the way that different typefaces, weights and sizes are structuring a page.

To establish typographic hierarchy there are a few things that can use: size, weight, color, position and type contrast. You don’t have to use only one of these, instead try using combinations of them to deliver a better a effect.

The size of the fonts that are on the page should not be randomly chosen. Also, the style and weight are also really important and don’t neglect them by just using just bold and… more bold. The fonts that you can find online also have a lot more weights that you can use like italic, bold italic, thin, or even small caps.

Use white space!

Newbie designers tend to ignore this. I’ve previously talked about white space and I’ll try to keep this as short as possible.

By using white space doesn’t mean that you should do it everywhere and at all costs. Certain elements like the ones that are related should be grouped and have a smaller space between them, while the distance between a group and another should be bigger. Improper spacing will confuse the visitors and it will direct their attention towards something that isn’t a priority.

So, selecting a typeface is the easy part, right?

No. You probably thought this is the easy part of the whole typographic process that involves designing a website, but it isn’t. Selecting a good typeface that is proper for your design is quite difficult.

My personal opinion is that you shouldn’t use only one typeface. I’ve talked about contrast in this article a few likes back and that can easily be done by using two different typefaces and by different I mean serif vs sans-serif, not Comic Sans vs Franklin Gothic.

Using two fonts, one serif and one sans, is one of the easiest ways that you can create typographical contrast while having a cohesive look to the text.

The easiest and most sure way of doing this successfully is by selecting from fonts made by the same designer, because they will most likely have the same strokes and curves. A good example of this is the pair PT Sans and PT Serif.

Be an information designer

Information design is the practice of presenting information in a way that fosters efficient and effective understanding of it. The term is usually used for graphic design for displaying information effectively, but with the continuous evolution of the web, the person who handles this responsibility, the information designer, has expanded his duties to the web also.

It is the information designer’s responsibility to divide, organize interpret the enormous quantity of typography that is on a site in such a way that the visitor will have a good chance of finding what is of interest to him. An information designer should be optimizing the readability, accessibility, usability and overall graphic balance of a site.

There are web designers who know what good web typography is and what it involves and that can be seen on the projects their working on. A few other examples of good web typography can be seen in this article.

The difference between a regular web designer and a really good one is the attention to details, taking time and being careful when making each and every aspect of the design process. What I’m talking about here is not impressive graphical elements that would steal a visitor’s attention, instead I’m talking about those delicate details of a design element that could enhance the user’s experience.

I know time is important to everyone and it may seem like a waste of it to focus on these little things, but you have to take care of these subtle details especially when creating a project for designers or people with a trained eye. The satisfaction that a visitor receives when he sees one of these details is incredible and your image in his eyes increases tenfold.

For example, look at the globe icon on Facebook. The icon shows a different side of the globe depending on your location.

You might say that Facebook is big company and it affords to do these specific things. If you would say this, it wouldn’t be the smartest thing you have said. One of the reasons it became a big company is that it cares about its visitors and tries to deliver the best experience to its visitors.

Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away

You have to be patient with your work and put every element of your design layout in their place with a specific purpose. Otherwise, if the element has no importance in your design, then you should remove it. Cluttering your design won’t do you any good. On the contrary, it may do more harm so try keeping it simple.

Even if you want to believe it or not, small design elements are noticed subconsciously by the visitor and they influence him in making decisions on the site. A good example of small design element is the attachment icon on Gmail which changes after the first attachment was uploaded.

There are also other details which don’t necessarily focus on design, but on functionality and improving the user experience, like security issues or guidance for the visitor to do the safest decisions on a website, like the registration form on Geeklist which tells you in a more interesting way that you have a weak password.

Another similar example is from GitHub where you are asked to type the full repository name to delete it. There are various sites where users tend to have a certain fear for “delete my profile” type of buttons which are stupidly thrown on the layout of the page and you might click it by mistake.

Be a perfectionist

This sounds a little bit elitist, but you have to do your best at every part of the design that you are working on. You will have to recheck the design and position of every element and modify it in such a way that it will improve the user’s experience.

You probably noticed that the words usability and user experience appear a lot when we’re talking about design and it should be no surprise. Website and app designs are all about UX and usability.

We’re not in the year 2000 when visitors responded positively to flashy content. The industry has grown up and the users are tired of the design over functionality issue. What they want are products that are useful and that can deliver what they are looking for.

Another thing that the visitors enjoy is being informed about what’s happening on the screen and about the result of their interactions. For example, when uploading a photo for example, they would like to know in real time how much of it was uploaded.

A plus on credibility

Gaining credibility for your product with these details is a big win and that is important because you design for you visitors and customers, not just for the sake of designing something. Visitors judge your site by evaluating design, copywriting and interactions. While copywriting shouldn’t be your concern, design and interactions are your responsibilities and you must deliver a well thought product if you want to gain more customers or visitors.

Go big or go home

You can build average websites, apps for web and mobile, but what you want for you and for your clients is to build excellent apps that are memorable. This can be done with a lot of work and time invested.

Also, you have to ignore templates. I know using templates is easy and switching the colors and a few fonts from one client to another may work for some designers, but that won’t help you get far, especially because one design doesn’t have the same effect for every client. They most likely target different audiences and different audiences respond differently to various design styles.

Use unique graphics in your designs. Trying to use icons made by other designers on your layouts doesn’t always have the desired effect. There are icon packs built with a lot of attention and which have really neat icons, but most of the times you will find yourself trying various icon packs on your design and you’ll notice that they simply don’t fit well. Creating your own icons in the same style as the overall design of the site is the best solution.

After you think you finished your project inspect every element and make sure everything is in place. If you are uncertain about some elements, don’t be afraid to ask for feedback your colleagues or friends. Don’t be afraid of what they might say. Also, don’t do everything that they comment about your design. If you know you know for sure that you’ve done the right thing by placing an element in a certain zone or if you designed it properly, stick to your design.

There was a time, not so long ago when a majority of new sites that we were seeing in website showcase galleries were parallax. It was really interesting at first, but like almost any trend, it gets bigger like a bubble and eventually it pops and the trend fades away. This situation happened to parallax scrolling too. It was a big thing and people were insane about it, but… it faded.

The beginning of parallax

Parallax is a displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight, and is measured by the angle or semi-angle of inclination between those two lines. Nearby objects have a larger parallax than more distant objects when observed from different positions, so parallax can be used to determine distances.

Even if that sounds a bit formal, it is the definition of parallax and it was used for the first time in 2D video games where the background images would move slower than the foreground images.

Parallax on websites. Entering HTML5 and CSS3

With these two new technologies the parallax effect was possible in web design and since then… designers lost their mind and started adding parallax scrolling to every new presentation site that they’ve had a contract for.

But why was it so popular? Well, trends usually take off because they look and feel good, but there was much more to parallax scrolling that made it intriguing. Most of the times, parallax scrolling is really interesting and scrolling for the next element to appear on the screen makes you feel like you were rewarded.

Besides that, for the authors of a parallax site the credibility increases a lot. Why? People tend to appreciate web designers who can pull off a well designed website. If done the proper way, usability will not be an issue and the site will be impressive and informative at the same time.

However, everything could backfire if you don’t do it properly. Scrolling too much may irritate the visitors and that would make them leave the site before them seeing what you wanted them to see. Also, the usability of the site will implicitly drop really fast.

Most designers never thought they could go wrong with it. After all, what could go wrong with it if everybody likes it?

Why it faded

There are more cons than pros when talking about parallax scrolling, but people ignored it for a while while the parallax scrolling hype was happening.

For starters, parallax scrolling uses Javascript/jQuery which makes the page load really slow and that disturbs a lot of people. The page load was increased because the Javascript plugin has to manipulate the position of all the elements that are on the page. This would seem like an easy job for a script, wouldn’t it? No. The plugin has to calculate every time a pixel is scrolled on the site which means that there are a lot of calculations while you angrily move your little mouse wheel. After all the smoke and mirrors disappear, parallax remains only an effect that is difficult to implement and also difficult to load on slow internet connections.

Most of the sites with parallax scrolling don’t work on mobile devices. That’s a real problem and many are trying to overcome this issue, but those people who have managed to make this effect work on mobile devices won’t give it for free and we can only hope one day we will have an open source version of this code.

Parallax doesn’t go well with SEO. A parallax based site is a one page site and that is a real problem when you want to optimize the site for search engines and you will lose out on meta description and title tags, which are very important.

Scrolling is interesting until it is not. I don’t mind scrolling on a website and I’m not necessarily an advocate of the idea that everything important must be above the fold, but scrolling like a mad man to see the end of the site is annoying.

Every year, computer screens are getting wider and wider and the text paragraphs on websites are becoming wider too and difficult to read. It is known that a person is comfortable reading 65-75 characters per line and you would expect people to adopt multiple columns in their layouts, but due to technology limitations multiple column layouts haven’t been implemented in the past.

Luckily, technology doesn’t stagnate and the multi column layout is supported right now by the majority of browsers, though not fully supported.

Source

How it looks

For best legibility, typographic manuals suggest that columns should contain roughly 65-75 characters per line. One formula suggests multiplying the point size of the font by 2 to reach how wide a column should be in picas — in effect a column width of 24 ems. Following these guidelines usually results in multiple narrow columns being favored over a single wide column. Historically, books containing predominantly text generally have around 40 lines per column. However, this rule of thumb does not apply to more complex text that contain multiple images or illustrations, footnotes, running heads, folios, and captions.

Column contrast refers to the overall color or greyness established by the column, and can be adjusted in a number of ways. One way is to adjust the relationship between the width and height of the column. Another way is to make adjustments to the typeface, from choosing a specific font, to adjusting weight, style, size and leading. Column contrast can be used to establish hierarchy, to balance the page composition, and to visually activate areas of the page.

If you are not seeing the above text in columns, it means that your browser is unsupported. Click here to see how it would look in a supported browser

The code

.three {
       -moz-column-count: 3;
       -moz-column-gap: 20px;
       -webkit-column-count: 3;
       -webkit-column-gap: 20px;
}
.two {
       -moz-column-count: 2;
       -moz-column-gap: 20px;
       -webkit-column-count: 2;
       -webkit-column-gap: 20px;
        text-align:justify;
}

To apply it simply add the class name:

<p class="three">The incredibly long text here</p>

Or, duh, add the snippet to the desired div’s properties in your CSS file.

Other properties that can be used

       -moz-column-rule: 1px dotted #ccc;
       -webkit-column-rule: 1px dotted #ccc;
       column-rule: 1px dotted #ccc;

This little piece of code adds borders between the columns that you have:

A multi-column element (or multicol element for short) is an element whose ‘column-width’ or ‘column-count’ property is not ‘auto’ and therefore acts as a container for multi-column layout. In the traditional CSS box model, the content of an element is flowed into the content box of the corresponding element. Multi-column layout introduces a new type of container between the content box and the content, namely the column box (or column for short). The content of a multicol element is flowed into its column boxes. Column boxes in a multi-column element are arranged into rows. Like table cells, the column boxes in a row are ordered in the inline direction of the multicol element. The column width is the length of the column box in the inline direction. The column height is the length of the column box in the block direction. All column boxes in a row have the same column width, and all column boxes in a row have the same column height. Within each row in the multi-column element, adjacent column boxes are separated by a column gap, which may contain a column rule. All column gaps in the same row are equal. All column rules in the same row are also equal, if they appear; column rules only appear between columns that both have content.

If you are not seeing the above text in columns, it means that your browser is unsupported. Click here to see how it would look in a supported browser

Fin

People are afraid of this technique, but it is pretty easy to implement and it looks good. It can be used in various ways on a website.

A clean web design has the advantage of being simple and functional which means that it is likely for it to be successful. Of all the website styles that you can pick for a website, this one has the biggest rate of being received well by all audiences.

When talking about clean web design most people will think of minimalism. Clean design has nothing to do with minimalism, because it focuses on the aesthetics of the page. A minimalist design is clean, but a clean web design doesn’t have to be minimalist.

So, how do we create a clean website?

Less is more, every designer should know this. You should avoid at all costs a cluttered design, with elements that you don’t necessarily need on the page. This is available for content as well as for graphical elements.

Use white space as much as you can to create relief zones and provide contrast for the content and design elements. It helps the user find exactly what is looking for on the page and you don’t risk having a big bounce rate.

Make sure that the graphical elements that you use are noticed and do their job on the page, otherwise the website will be perceived by the visitor as a blank sheet of paper. It is important that you direct the visitor’s attention to where you want with the help of a few noticeable site graphics.

Clean web design, satisfied visitors

Usability is a thing that always has to be the primary notion that has to be taken into consideration and clean websites make the user experience pleasant. In a clean web site it is easier to find the important content, navigation bar, social media icons and other elements that must be recognized.

In the following part of the article, I’m inviting you to check out a collection of clean website design examples.

In typography, a serif is a small line trailing from the edges of letters, such as when handwriting is separated into distinct units for typewriters. A typeface with serifs is called a serif typeface and a typeface without serifs is called sans serif or sans-serif, from the French sans, meaning ‘without’.

While sans-serif fonts are recommended for the web, serif fonts are recommended more for print. Even though people say this it is not widely accepted. It varies a lot on your site design, if the font is fit for it, and of course, it depends on your audience; certain groups of people will prefer fanatically one or the other.

In this article you have a selection of cool serif fonts from urbanfonts which you can download and use in your projects.
