As the first major project to be implemented after master planning the entire senior school campus, the Brother Stephen Debourg Performing Arts Centre at Sacred Heart Collegedemonstrates the schools’ focus and a return to its core philosophy of being a teaching institution of its time, maintaining the provision of services par excellence.

Reinforcing the fledgling performing arts stream, the new facility signifies this change by the intervention of a contemporary building into a historically significant precinct and prominent location on the grounds. Bridging between existing traditional building stock, the performing art facility nestles comfortably within a grove of established trees in the manicured landscape. The splayed wings of the building offered to the driveway drawing one to the glazed entry and within.

Visible from a major road, the massing and combination of forms balance contextual composition with a striking simple intrusion. Presenting solid walls to the east, north and west facades reduce unnecessary heat load, yet the building provides transparency to the south landscaped portion of the site. This characteristic, in conjunction with a reduction to a scale in keeping with the adjacent residential buildings, fosters visual connection and promotes passive surveillance.

The use of a colored paneling system in cardinal purple offers more than just a tenuous link to the adjacent chapel; imbuing the internal spaces and the cloister with a subtle lilac glow to reinforce the spiritual and reverential ambience.

Abalone is a renowned globally as a delicacy, while in China it is also considered a luxury item worthy of reserve for special occasions.

More often than not, however, the premium status of the product is poorly reflected in its packaging. With this in mind, Fortune Abalone Australia approached REB Design to manage a broad branding and packaging program, which would add value to the produce on offer in its superb new retail outlet in Chatswood, Sydney.

The scope of the program included the development of premium carry bags, proprietary gift packaging for selected dried abalone, and packaging for canned and vacuum-sealed produce.

Most people think skydiving involves just jumping out of a plane and falling to the ground. That’s not the case, you get an adrenalin hit and your senses and emotions are heightened, but it’s really all about being able to fly around the sky in a 3D environment.

 On a complex consolidated site within the CBD of Sydney, the project is positioned between 2 heritage buildings on George Street and occupying the depth of a city block also includes the restoration of two heritage listed buildings on the site, facing York Street.

The new podium on George Street will connect through most of the floors on the rear heritage buildings creating large contiguous retail floor.  A pedestrian link adapting a historic cart-lane in the heritage buildings will link the two streets and also create the entry to commercial office floors on 12 floors above podium and heritage buildings, with the core slotted into the center of the site with minimal impact on the heritage fabric.

Within the rich context of recent CBD projects and historic buildings the architectural language of the building focuses on simplicity and the repeated use of detail component, unique to the individual components of the project:

The retail podium façade relates to the adjacent heritage buildings in both height and proportion, with sloped window boxes set within a slender framework of structure.

A large horizontal recess separates the commercial tower level above. Here the curtain wall is a ‘saw-tooth’ system with angled panes and deep mullions in every 1.5m bay, and more solid precast concrete panels on the side elevations.

The restoration of the heritage buildings on York Street concentrates on peeling back layers to the historically relevant fabric and carefully detailing contemporary insertions.

Above the heritage buildings the office floors are built as a lightweight steel box supported by a long-span steel truss to minimize the impact on the historic buildings below. The main façade uses a random pattern of solid precast elements and glazed panels with proportional reference to the masonry facades below.

Conceived as a compact and low maintenance residence for a retired couple in Cottesloe, Western Australia, the Salvado Street Residence is a modernist inspired beach home with a clear and rational design to suit the needs of its occupants which breaks with its suburban context of 1970’s brick and tile townhouses.

The design draws inspiration from modernist ideals of living which are tempered by a critical regionalist response to climate and place. Minimal lines and planar forms reference its modernist inspiration whilst materiality and detailing draw from a local palette of materials.

The planning concept is based on a courtyard typology featuring a pond, around which the private spaces and the public entertainment spaces are organised. This duality is emphasised architecturally by separate treatments of the private and public spaces: the public spaces are open plan, outward-oriented and unenclosed spaces gathered under a floating Miesian roof whilst the private spaces are inwardly focused and enclosed within thick masonry walls which create a sense of privacy and retreat.

The Salvado Street Residence, drawing simultaneously on the spatial qualities of the International Style and the regional context of coastal Western Australia, reveals a unique take of contemporary Australian Architecture.

Thanks to everybody who has blogged, tweeted and shared this series. I never thought it would be this popular, as it was a little project I did for myself, but it seems that the love for coffee and photography has even exceeded my own. So due to demand, and such positive reviews, I have now extended this project t its own URL and has now become A Coffee Every Day. Since starting the “A Week of Coffee” series, The “A Coffee Every Day” project has always been lingering at the back of my mind. So, i launched it on April 1st. At the moment, with only 14 or so photos i can already see where its heading, and I am loving every bit of it. Maybe a limited edition series print of the complete year of coffee? Maybe make a calendar at the end of the coffee year, based on the shots? Who knows? Either way, I hope you enjoy it. And pass it on to your friends.
