Quick update of last month's activity with Pink Pig.... Main event was a 22 day stint exhibiting at the Wet End Fair in Edinburgh. Hugely successful, and a definite annual event for me, the fair was the busiest I'd ever attended.  It coincided with the Edinburgh Festival, so there were hundreds of tourists visiting, as well as locals, many who made a point of visiting the fair every year.

This is the second time 'Eau Flirt' from Harvey Prince New York has been featured on American TV, but this time it's a US nationwide show called 'The Doctors'- so big exposure for the brand. I've had some really cool jobs the last couple of months, and this one was one of my favourites. Harvey Prince asked me to come up with something striking for packaging for their bar soaps. The soaps are a bit special (ingredients include  pumpkin seeds, vitamin e, olive oils, and other goodies) so the packaging had to reflect the quality of the products. Freelancing as an illustrator is fantastic, but sometimes it gets hectic, and most of April I've been trying to juggle a cool kid's book project (will post pics when it's finished), working my usual illustration 'in-house days' for a lovely gift stationery publisher in Edinburgh, and have also squished in a really fun project. This is a quick way to add some depth to a shape. I've been using it in a recent illustration project to make shapes appear more three dimensional. As I can't show those illustrations until they are published, I'll demonstate on my bride illustration. Use the technique on any shape or object, but simple shapes are best. If there are too many points in the object, you can end up with odd results.

What I'm working on today.... A  possible commission for two childrens' books on potty training today. A publisher wanted to see a cover idea based on my wee Christmas girl with presents, shown here. I'm doing my best to make the first (female) one all pink and pretty. Couple of screen shots which show progress so far below. I always sketchout my ideas, and then place on a locked layer at 50%

The new Pantone Capsure looks fantastic! Take any surface, sample of fabric, paint swatch,  etc, and match it quickly and easily to a Pantone Colour. It looks wonderful, and a great new toy for the design toolbox, but at over £400 ($619) you have really got to ask yourself  if you can justify the cost. It might be a more sensible, though admittedly less fun, solution to use your own judgement

I bought this book recently for design inspiration- I'm looking to add loads of new t-shirt designs to my gift shop this year, and I thought this would be the motivation I needed to get my creative juices going! Here are  my sketchbook doodles as I was watching X-Factor on Saturday night! There are lots of unusable scribbles, but I quite like the robot sketches, and think I'm going to develop them into products for my online shop at Zazzle.Hopefully, it will be the basis for a range -and possibly even a repeating pattern.Which goes to show that sometimes ideas flow when you're not really trying too hard!
