Magnificent Beetle Sphere: Design Soak Opinion

I think this piece of art is fantastic. I first discovered this piece via Colossal, and then saw it a few time after on various blogs, so I know its been well received in the design community. With all the mono-tone and mindless sculpture art out there, I think it’s great when an artist goes out on a limb and creates something conceptual, hard to achieve and simply mind-boggling!

The idea emerged from a personal perception towards objects that are products of a “transportation culture”, which induces hints/signs of spiritual emotion. To behold a vehicle (car) is to have a “magical” (supernatural) identity. Sculptures represent the interaction between humans and the object realm, with strong spiritual tension that affects the subconscious, and that yields a new “animistic” attitude. Read more here.

In this episode of SHANKS FX we have some fun with the wonderful weirdness of “Magnetic Putty”. We used this Putty to create a lot of the Black Hole sequences in our film SCI-FLY. We now take a 2nd run at experimenting with this “strange matter” to see what new images & sequences can be achieved!!!

My sculptures were originally inspired by the form and function of the sea urchin. The spines of the urchin, so dangerous yet beautiful, serve as an explicit warning against contact. The alluring texture of the spines draws the touch in spite of the possible consequences. The tension unveiled, we feel push and pull, desire and repulsion [read more on Jennifermaestre.com].

I bet the last time you stood on someone else’s chewing gum, you didn’t admire it as art. Well, English ‘urban-graffiti’ street artist Ben Wilson has spent many hours painting the sticky stuff on the pavements (sidewalks) of London. This aptly named “Chewing Gum Art” is pretty unique. As you can see in the following images, Ben certainly likes to get in the thick of it:
