This has most definitely not been the lazy summer day summer I have been use to my whole life. I started the summer off in Italy with my school for a two week class!

Then I am ending the summer completing a design internship in the Bahamas!

This schedule has not been very conducive though for my blogging!

Promise there will be lots of photos from traveling very soon!

Studio III: COMPLETED!!!

Today we had our final presentations for Studio III! Only a few more classes left till SUMMER time! Although this summer will be filled with summer classes and homework. I think before that though I'll take a 2 week trip to Italy! I'm going over with a group from school, and we will be leaving in 22 days!!

DIY life cycle of a butterfly baby mobile

The mobile has been finished and the baby has been born!

The process started with this mobile we found online...

From there I came up with my own concept: the life cycle of a butterfly...

And.. here is what we came up with..

I have realized that for the whole life of this blog I have never given you a full tour of my apartment. So, for all of you apartment dwellers out there, in these next few weeks I would like to walk you through each room individually and show you how to make your apartment feel a little more like a home!

ROOM I: THE DINING ROOM

Improvements made--

1. Painted the walls

2. Restored an old kitchen table of my Moms (sanded down, painted the legs, and stained the table top and seats)

3. Redesigned the lamp in the corner

4. hung a lamp shape that I designed over the table for a focal piece in the room

5. found awesome placemats at IKEA to tie it all together

Brian and I redesigned this lamp last spring.

It was his idea to use the x-stitch.. I think it made the lamp!

The lamp shade I designed last summer is a great addition to this dining room, and cast an awesome shadow on the wall!

In our color application class we were told to choose one night image for our next rendering. It was a nice change from always drawing on white paper. It is kind of difficult to see, but the printed image I chose is the second image down.

Somehow, I got very lucky and found one of very few boys that is creative enough, cares enough, and is handy enough to make his room look like this! Brian did this last summer while I was home in Kansas. I asked him to wait till I got back, but I think he missed me so much that he needed a project to keep him busy! haha

He is however still a boy, so disregard the mess!

He stained 1x4s and screwed them into vertical standing 1x3s that were screwed to the wall.

He aslo built a bed frame that didn't make it into the picture.

Here is his custom desk that he built for all of his audio equipment.

DIY Baby Mobiles!!

I mentioned in an earlier post that Brian's sister is having a baby. Well, I am currently making her a mobile for the baby's room. There will be pictures later, but for now I thought I would share with you some awesome ones that I have found!

A great way to fill up wall space is to create a collage of frames. For most people this is a simple task, of course I turned it into a much longer process than necessary. After contemplating many different arrangements, painting the frames 3 different times, and nailing holes in two different walls, they are finally done!

Along the way I turned them into a utilitarian collage of frames. This is a great way to hang grocery lists, bills, flyers, and anything else you might need to keep but don't know where to put!

The reason for this title is because I should be studying for a History of Furniture test that I have tomorrow morning. I haven't posted in so long, and of course the one time when I really shouldn't post I can't wait to!! So.. I decided I would give myself a little break to write a post and get it out of my system so I can focus again!

I have so many projects that I have done around the apt. and at school that I need to share with you, but to keep this quick I thought I would share some pics from the past couple months to catch you up with my life!

My boyfriend's sister and brother- in- law are having a baby in April!! For their Christmas present Brian (my boyfriend) and I put gift cards to Baby's R Us and Lowe's inside this model of their baby room that I made! Presentation is everything, right?!

Brian's sister is in the midst of decorating their baby room right now. So.. I thought it would be fun to take a look at some baby room ideas, hopefully these will help her!

DIY Jute String Chandeliers

The inspiration for these DIY string chandeliers came from Ruffled.

This is such an easy and fun way to add character to a space!

I'll walk you through the steps on how to make your own string chandeliers!!

1. Inflate the balloon to your desired size a shape. I made a variety of different shapes and sizes.

2. If you’re looking to make a lampshade out of the string chandelier, use a sharpie to mark a circle around the tie of the balloon that will leave a space for the bulb to fit in.

3. Before you start working, we recommend using a tarp. Mix corn starch, glue and warm water together until it has a smooth texture. ( An alternative would be to mix water and flour, 1:2 flour to water ratio)

4. Smear the vaseline all over your balloon until it is completely coated so the twine wet with glue won’t stick on the balloon after dry.

5. You can start a little assembly line with friends by one of you feeding the yarn through the glue mix and giving to another person to wrap it around the balloon.

6. Start wrapping the balloon vertically, and slowly change to wrapping horizontally. For a seamless look, tuck the ends of the twine under one of the wrapped strings.

7. Wait 24 hours until the balloon has completely dried before popping the balloon.

8. If you want you can spray the string chandeliers with a clear fast drying spray paint et voila!

This past semester I was in a class called Think. Design. Build. I showed you our first project, the shelving unit, a few post back. The second project assignment that we were given was to design a Tennessee Igloo out of at least 50% cardboard.

We took time to study igloos, looking at how they are built and why there are built, what an "igloo" would look like in different climates around the world, and then finally we designed an "igloo" for Tennessee and it's climate.

IKEAAAAAAAA

For the past couple of years I have been dying to go to IKEA. Everyone would always tell me how amazing it is, and I wanted to see for myself if it is all that everyone said it was. Well, a few weeks ago I finally got to go!! It was a very spur of the moment trip. It was around 3 o'clock on Friday when Brian made the suggestion that we go, and we were on the road by 6:30 the next morning. We went to the one in Cincinnati, Ohio. Here is how our day went...

6:30-12:00: Driving

12:00- 1:00: Walked into IKEA for the first time!!

We only made it around half of the top floor in this time. Somehow Brian knew that it would be better if we looked around for a little bit and then left and came back. He is very smart, because I was so overwhelmed and excited I could hardly function.

1:00-2:00: Ate at Red Robin and made a game plan

2:00-6:30: Went back to IKEA and decided I would be fine living there

We were a little tired.. but SOOO EXCITED!!!

I put my hair back, I had to have no distractions. I was ready to shop!!

Here's Brian putting his ipod cord up his shirt, he thought it would be more enjoyable if he added a soundtrack to the shopping. He got into a few songs and gave the people around us a soundtrack as well. haha

LOVED this pillow.. only $10.

Molly- There was this one little book section in the midst of everything else, and we decided this would have been your favorite part. lol

I got these little wicker place mats.

I would say it was a pretty successful trip!!

We got everything we didn't know we needed. : )

I promise we will be back IKEA. Miss you already!

The exterior of this building may not look exciting, but don't be fooled....

This warehouse is FULL of the most random things. The majority of it all comes from old department stores. You have to really search for the good things, but that's half the fun!

Here are some awesome old mirrors.

I found out later these were actually the owners and not for sale. Of course, I wanted some of the only things in the whole warehouse that weren't for sale.

My best friend, Liz, would have bought this little t.v. Whether it worked or not. lol

Brian decided this is where all mannequins go to die.

He helped in the process by taking these clamps off some of the mannequins to use for clamping lights together during shoots. He did feel bad about it though. ha

This project was a part of my Think.Design.Build. class. This is obviously the build part of the class. My good friend Jessica was the one who designed this storage unit for our department head's office. We were in charge of everything from making detailed plans of how it would be constructed, buying all the supplies at Home Depot, and then constructing it all. We still need to put the metal sheet on for the counter tops but besides that it is done!

Our next project in this class is going to be a shelter that is made out of all found objects and large enough for people to actually inhabit... It should be interesting. lol
