Jewelry Designer and Metalsmith

Louise Norrell fabricates her jewelry in gold, sterling silver, and 18k gold bi-metal. Her techniques include soldering, chasing, forging and die-forming. Often using molds that she has created, Norrell die forms most of her pieces, and adds texture with chasing techniques or a hammer. She prefers to work in white or yellow gold and sterling silver, combining the metals in compelling and detailed designs. Her pieces are all fabricated from sheet metal or wire.

After years of working in a contemporary jewelry store in the small college town of Athens, Georgia, Louise Norrell decided to start her own business. Having gained the necessary experience of learning how a piece should lay and best flatter the wearer, Norrell knew that she was ready to develop, design, and market her own handcrafted jewelry.

Handcrafted Jewelry

When building a piece of jewelry from pearls and wire, Estyn Hulbert describes the process as working with single units, adding and subtracting them to create shapes, the materials providing a palette of textures and contrasts. She thinks in terms of the architecture of a piece, striving for structural integrity and a seamlessness between the material and the form. Each piece is made using hand tools to shape and secure the wire. Chain links beaded elements or creates a fringe that is trimmed to outline a geometric form. Meticulous attention is paid to the proportions of the beads selected in order to achieve the final shape desired.
