Desde 1987 es profesor de literatura hebrea en la Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, en Beersheba, universidad de la cual se convirtió en catedrático de literatura hebrea moderna en 1993. Por otro lado, ha sido profesor y escritor invitado por varias universidades en Estados Unidos, Inglaterra y Alemania, y desde 1991 es miembro de la Academia de la Lengua Hebrea. Ha publicado un gran número de novelas, entre las que destacan: Mi querido Mijael (1968), Tocar el agua, tocar el viento (1973), Un descanso verdadero (1982), La caja negra (1987), La tercera condición (1991), No digas noche (1994), El mismo mar (1998) y Una historia de amor y oscuridad (2002), su novela más autobiográfica. Su talento literario lo ha hecho merecedor de numerosos premios internacionales, como el Goethe (2005), el reputado Premio Israelí de Literatura (1998) o el Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras (2007). Además de la novela, Amos Oz ha cultivado la escritura periodística y ensayística.
